I remember this so well when it aired in 1981. I was 15 years old and decided right then I would one day act in plays. I also remember the famous Ned Beatty stumble and his fantastic recovery!

I'd totally forgotten about this until a friend who'd gone to Tufts with Bill Hurt reminded me and, as always, am thankful to YT uploaders for providing just about everything I look for on here. Wanted to see him again when he was young and gorgeous.

It has been 42 years, and I still remember Ned Beatty calling the boy a baby. 😄

Thank you for posting this. I really doubted that I would ever get the chance to see this but you made it possible. Thanks so much.

What's refreshing is that they are indeed doing this "live" at UCLA... no "Cut" and "Take 2" if you mess up... just keep going and hope the audience doesn't catch on. EXAMPLE: check out the Ned Beatty's brief flub at 10:47. He mistakenly addresses the character of Mary as "Sally", which is both the actress's name (Sally Field) and the name of his character's wife. A pro, Beatty instantly corrects himself and continues the scene without ever breaking character or "going up", or whatever actors call it... you can argue that he mistakenly says his wife's name instead of Mary because he's a bit drunk, based on Mary's hilarious gesture a moment earlier. Any-hoo, knowing the actors are performing live makes the entire show that more enjoyable to watch, in my opinion.
