It's hard to believe it, but it's 50 years this September since I arrived in St Andrews to read Astrophysics. I had 4 of the best years of my life there and it set me up for a very successful career. I still have many friends from my time there, because St Andrews is more like a big family than a university. Good luck to all of you who get a place. You will love it.
When you arrive, third and fourth year students may invite you to join their academic family. They become your academic father or mother and you become one of their academic children. They basically help you settle in and help you to establish a friendship group. On one day (Raisin Sunday) your mother provides an afternoon party and, in the evening, your father takes you out (often to get VERY drunk). For their services, you re supposed to buy them something (originally raisins, but now more usually alcohol) and they give you a receipt. This can be written on anything but a live animal and you are expected to carry it around with you on Monday morning. At lunchtime, everyone goes to the Quad and has a massive foam fight. It's a lot of fun.
ahhh this has made me fall in love with st andrews all over again. i am PRAYING that i get an offer! i sent you a DM on instagram, and was wondering if you could answer a few of my questions
