    As an asian dude, I don't really mind girls wearing pretty dress, it's just people might think she's a waitress.

      Dana's #1 Fan Qipio (the dress) is usually wore by Chinese Waitress in High-end Chinese Restaurants, In China some girls still wears them because of fashion too.

      I have no problem with her wearing it. Her response however where she said she respected Chinese culture and then contradicted it by calling it "just a fucking dress", reflects that she wasn't as sincere and respectful as she claimed to be.

      BWFeuntaco To you and her it's just a dress, but to others it's a symbol of their culture. That's like saying the US flag is just a flag, but to some it's more than that. Same thing applies to the dress.

    I've been to China and walked in a shop selling dresses like that they ENCOURAGE foreigners to try on and buy these dresses they are definitely NOT offended of other cultures wearing it. If anything while you try it on they want pictures to show other people a foreign person wearing their traditional dress.

    I wore a Chinese dress for my prom too. Living in then UK is so different than the States. I was complimented by friends and teachers of all races because I had chose a pretty colour and fit for my body and was the only girl wearing that style. I took a picture with my Nepalese friend who came in something white,short and lace which is not something from her own culture. Does that mean she's 'appropriating' European or Western cultures?
    I chose the dress because I like Asian cultures and it was genuinely so pretty and unique. People need to relax about this. Culture is something beautiful and exciting to learn about - we should allow it to be shared and appreciated.

      In the US it's only ever racist or discrimination when it's done by a white person.
      Because the US was founded by Straight White Men.... so the country is racist, sexist, and homophobic (transphobic)

    • @rebeccabobby5341

      YR Yu I understand what you're saying. Buy you telling me I can't have a say anything on the topic because I'm caucasian is kind of the same thing. It's not one particular race's job to teach kindness in any circumstance. I wrote my comment as a person, not as just a white girl, tryna spread some wisdom.
      I grew up near Heathrow where there really is no such thing as minorities because there's a balance of British and other cultures. I was taught how to be comfortable around different cultures and how to share my own respectfully. That's the kinda message I'm trying to spread.

      YR Yu is being way too sensivitve. Im asian amerian and it dont offend me. Matter of fact, I like it that you wore something different. It shows me that your open to other cultures and most likely if there was real racist shit going down, you would actually be an ally. Saying a white person cant say shit on a topic is stupid as heck. How are you going to keep a meaningful dialogue if you can't speak to each other.

    • @ellislee3016
      @ellislee3016 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By your logic. If you see white people doing some fucked up shit. You as an asian person can't say shit or correct the situation. How logical is that. Do you not see the hypocrisy in your statement.

    You know what, the world is suppose to be united now, which means we SHOULD use each others things to prove that we really are a united species. If you complain about this you're afraid of this unity and you want to divide the world again and bring us backward instead of forward.

      queenhiphop1002 Then that's a situation that we can address together, black, asian, latina/o, and yes even white. Just because a problem exists doesn't mean we should let it slow us down in our steps towards acceptance. We can address it together as one cause.

      queenhiphop1002 *"Yours"* . See that's the problem. Something about my comment made you assume that I somehow can't be black. Well news flash, I'm straight from Nigeria, so what's "yours" is also "mine". What you're calling for is a type of segregation in disguise. How does that seem like progress to you? What exactly do you think that will solve, or how can that possibly be better? I genuinely want to get your POV because no matter how many, blog posts, or articles, or videos I see on it, that argument never makes sense to me. It seems so backwards. If you didnt want people from other races to partake in the discussion then why bring it up at all? Why have national movements like BLM when you don't want the majority of the nation to get involved?

      Bryan James don't know about the diversity for sure but I give it credit for being social, and for freedom of speech.
      Still doesn't help the fact that other countries don't have this problem because we're not as confused when it comes to race/ racial issues. America is still working that out till this day.

    • @XxLilBxX1
      @XxLilBxX1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may have exaggerated on the most diverse part but you don't see many countries celebrate other cultures' holidays.
      And it's actually pretty remarkable that from all the different bullshit the US has gone through with racial issues from slavery to what we have now, it's a big jump. I know slavery didn't start in the US and it still exists today but the point is that the US came a long way. The only reason different countries pay attention to the US a lot is because of the advancement made. This upcoming country made by different backgrounds bringing their contributions shows a lot of promise.

    In Jessica and Tiffany's case, it is perfectly fine for them to wear kimono/chipao, especially Tiffany. Her husband is Chinese for crying out loud. She is a Chinese guy's lawfully wedded wife, she will make a half-Chinese baby in the future, of course she is entitled to wear chipao! There is nothing wrong with wearing the traditional costume of your significant other's culture.

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yuju Ti wait, based on your comment, so unless you're somehow connected to the culture by blood, you are still not allowed to wear it?

    • @yujuti8416
      @yujuti8416 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Husband and wife/ boyfriend and girl friend are not related by blood. I said there is nothing wrong to wear your significant otehr's traditional costume, I didn't say you must "somehow connected to the culture by blood".

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yuju Ti I said somehow because you mentioned making a half-chinese baby. Hence "somehow", not directly. Also, you still didn't answer my question.

    • @yujuti8416
      @yujuti8416 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael Panggabean You just over-analyzed my comment. I left this comment because Joe mentioned Jessica was so nervous to wear kimono even though it was Joe's mom asking her to wear it. That's why I said "In Jessica and Tiffany"s case...". I mentioned half-Chinese baby because I want to emphasize Tiffany is part of a Chinese family now, when she wears chipao she is celebrating her husband's culture, not mocking it or playing a character. All I want to say is that no one should judge Jessica and Tiffany if they wear kimono/chipao. I still don't understand why you think I am saying one should somehow relate to the culture by blood in order to wear the custom of that culture. Jessica and Tiffany are not related to Joe and Cassy by blood! I have tried my best to answer your question. If you are still not satisfied, all I can say is you read between the lines WAY too much. There is no hidden meaning. I mean what I said.

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yuju Ti okay, let me rephrase it for you to hopefully make it easier for to digest. You said in Jessica and Tiffany's case it's fine. Now, is it fine for the girl in the article to wear the clothing? By mentioning that Jessica's and Tiffany's case is perfectly fine, you're differentiating the 2 categories of people wearing ethnic clothings there.
      Another example, I'm not Japanese, nor Scottish, yet I love to casually wear yukata and kilt anywhere I go. There's no special occasion, no cultural events. I just wear it like any other pieces of clothings I have (and no, this is not rhetorical, I really do wear them every now and then). Is that "perfectly fine" to you, or not?

She was so happy when I wore them during reunions with my husband’s family, and everyone wanted to take pictures of me. Oh and did I forget to mention that I’m Mexican! Yeah I really don’t see what’s the big deal, and my husband was not one bit offended by this. People really need to get a life!

  • @Xcxc13
    @Xcxc13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The reason that the girl sparked debate is because she posted tweets saying that Asians sucks in the past and the photo is considered mocking. Thats why. So it wasn’t appreciation but appropriate is when you take things from a culture, and unlike tiffany who honors her husbands culture & is trying to learn chinese, this girl has posted a bunch of bad things and then wore that dress. Appropriation is wearing a sombrero, eating tacos and celebrating Cinco de Mayo, while voting for trump who calls mexicans rapists and criminals. While also not being aware of issues surrounding a culture.

    • @thepezfeo
      @thepezfeo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know Trump was talking about illegals crossing the border and he said not all. If you check many women crossing the border are raped (esp. by "Coyotes").
      His proposed immigration bill was more than fair, especially compared to Mexico's immigration laws (which are actually racist).

    TBH I can see why people would get upset, I can expect the same if white girl wore an African print/style dress or a sari as well, esp they don't really have a connection to the culture as well (or personal relationships from people from that culture)
    Im okay with people trying and exploring new cultures in a respectful way. But sometimes I see people (not just white) pick and choose parts of the culture they like. The same ones who love sushi and Korean BBQ or want to take a trip to Thailand, roll their eyes when they see a big group of Asians hanging out in pubic or make fun of new immigrant and their accent. They are open to the Asian foods that are trending in America, but think other traditional Asian foods are disgusting and uncivilized.
    Just my two cents from what I've personally experienced.

    It's interesting to hear Joe say that Japanese people want black people to come and be a part and experience their culture because I've received racism from Asian people and that weirds me out and makes me feel weird about embracing part of their culture. I would really like an answer to whether or not it's going to be as uncomfortable for me as a black person to go visit in Asian countries as it would when I go visit predominately white countries?

    • @aznmochibunny
      @aznmochibunny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      RoseByChoice The problem isn't that they are racist. It's that they are ignorant. Most Asians in Asia appreciate the fact that foreigners want to appreciate their culture but there is a stereotype about blacks. What Asians know about blacks comes from what they see in Hollolywood and there isn't a huge population of blacks even living in Asia. However, there is an African comedian who has lived in Korea for a long time and he is very famous there - Koreans love him (look up Sam Okyere). A lot of people in Asia - particularly young people have a somewhat good approach to darker skinned foreigners because they have the internet and don't have prejudices against them. It's the older generation that can be harsh. Most old people everywhere are set in their mindset and aren't willing to change. That being said, people are going to get discriminated everywhere they go. Don't let that stop you from going to Asia and experience the culture. Asia is extremely beautiful with friendly people, landscape and culture. Do go.

    • @vaspops4644
      @vaspops4644 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @aznmochibunny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vas Pops Dark skin isn't perceived well in Asia due to it's long history of lighter skin equals you are wealthy mindset. Add Hollywood's previous perception of blacks in negative roles, and you get the (previous) Asian's perceptions of blacks in Asia. It's not good but it's slowly changing.

      Generally, Asians aren't quite fond of black people. In Japan being pale is considered a good thing on top of that most they ever see of black people are in Hollywood movies, so that's not really gonna help your image. Also, rule of thumb. If one was born in America They don't generally speak for their people as a whole.

    I see where JKnews is coming from, but they grew in in LA and sacremento. For asians in smaller places like the Hmong in Minnesota, they get mocked for ANYTHING resembling their culture. Then to see a white girl wear it to prom after you were dragged, thats insulting. There's no reason for her to wear that dress, unlike Tiff who married a Chinese guy. It's random and unnecessary.

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MsMuslimahgirl I got mocked when I wore my traditional outfit when I'm abroad. And guess what? I don't give a damn. Not only that, I also wear other cultures traditional clothing casually in town. No events whatsoever. Mockery is natural, people can react however they want. IF Asians or other minority are jailed because they're showing their culture, then labelling this as cultural appropriation is true.

    • @MsMuslimahgirl
      @MsMuslimahgirl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      go abroad? its not a lived, daily experience so you cant even speak on this. Ok reading the rest, you make no sense...

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MsMuslimahgirl okay, let me clear that out. I lived in Japan for 4 years. I came from south East Asia, which in Japan is seen equivalently as how Americans see Mexicans. Wore my traditional clothings casually on the street while I'm not in Tokyo, but rural area where people will commented and laughed at me. And yeah, when I came back I wore yukata and kilt casually as well in the city, even though I don't have any Japanese or Scottish blood running in me.
      It's just clothings. And if you understand the history of how clothings evolved, it was never in isolation, but influencing one another. Renaissance Italians started wearing silk and embroided clothings after making contact with China; modern men suit evolved from justaucorps, which itself a western interpretation of Persian court dress; Indian sherwani was Indian interpretation of British frock coat; and even qipao was Han Chinese' interpretation of Manchu people's traditional dress.
      With that history, anyone can take any clothings and interpret it anyway they want.

    • @MissHaileym
      @MissHaileym 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      JKWongFuCommunityHiga in my opinion I feel like it is because Asian just do not care. Like look at the jk crew for example they’re excusing it but in reality they don’t see how other Asians are discriminated against for their cultures but white people are praised for it. They do not face the same type of situations that black people will face. It’s all appropriation but certain situations have more negative outcomes which is why people will be offended. Jk doesn’t understand this topic so much in my eyes they think anytime you eat another’s cultures food then it’s appropriation when that isn’t the case.

    • @MissHaileym
      @MissHaileym 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      YR Yu yeah I’m not saying one appropriation is worse than the other I mean people make it a big deal when it’s one culture vs another when they should both be looked at the same way. Jk makes this seem like it’s not a big deal but if somebody wore body markings from an African tribe then they would be more angered by it. They are not seeing how this issue this causes other people which is why I said that the outcome from her wearing the dress isn’t as bad because there are many Asian people excusing her.

    My school had an oriental prom two years ago and there was a little bit of outrage & this one Asian girl started a petition against it. At first I fell into the hype and thought it was wrong but now looking back it wasn't that big of a deal, sure they probably could've used another word like Asian or something but really, if they weren't bringing us down, making fun of, or trying to be harmful why don't we just let them be. I don't know what the actual prom was like though, if it was disrespectful or not but some people didn't go because of that.

    I think that's dope. I don't see a lot of Asian girls wearing their traditional outfits because it isn't the "norm" to wear those for prom, but she's breaking the norm.

    the fact that people don't mind this yet get mad over box braids really says something about how much respect asian culture really gets

    I'm not really taking any sides, and I personally don't have an issue with her wearing the dress, but I can see where some people are coming from. Some Asian Americans had to grow up being shamed/ made fun of for their culture, so the fact that someone who's not from their culture got to wear it and get praise from it must be hurtful to those individuals. Chinese people being okay with how she's wearing it is different from ABC's being okay with it because Chinese people from China never had to deal with the discrimination that some ABC's had to deal with in the states. Also, I feel like the way she responded to the controversy with "It's just a pretty dress" wasn't a statement that really worked in her favor for some individuals because I think if she gave some more cultural appreciation for it and really learned about the history behind it, the heat that was coming at her wouldn't have been as bad. At the end of the day though, she's just a high school girl so she doesn't deserve all the backlash that's coming at her. I also personally do not care about if she wears it or not, because she's not doing anything with a bad intention anyways. Idk just thought about playing devil's advocate

    People want unity but can't handle what comes with it. This world is amazing.
