    I like your videos and your style but I do wonder if you’d get a better product if you made cuts? You’d definitely get rid of that “spikey” moment as you sip. It’s the disadvantage of the Airstill though. Without making more must and doing several runs you’ll just end up with 1 bottle which almost isn’t worth the effort. However, you’ve now done “the experiment” for us and I’m tempted to give it a go scaled up for my T500 where I can make the necessary cuts to get an excellent product so, a big thank you for your inspirational video 😃👍

      Thanks for the comment and I’m glad that you enjoyed the film. I need to learn about cuts, but in all honesty, I don’t know if I’ll do much more stilling as I don’t really drink spirits that much. I think it will just become an occasional thing, but yeah learning more about cuts would be useful. Hope your calvados turns out well, cheers! 🍻

    I never heard of Calvados before to be fully honest, sounds Spanish to me.
    So, this is like link-fusion of sweetness of cider and stronger wine I may right?
    Pretty good brewing as usually.
    I have three questions if you don't mind.
    1. What if you mixed Cider and Wine? Would be too strong?
    2. What's point using Tomato Paste? What does it do? Sugar boosters?
    3. Would the plastic ruined the taste?

    • @MossHomeandGarden
      @MossHomeandGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Aaron, Calvados is French it's basically apple brandy. Cider and wine mixed would be stronger than cider and weaker than wine...taste wise it would depend on what you were mixing. The tomato paste is for yeast nutrient as the juice doesn't have a lot to feed on, plastic is fine as long as it is food grade plastic. Cheers!

    Nice T-shirt! ;) Greetings from UA.
    Have a question. What it is a magic teapot You using for distilling? And copper tubes, they are without any cooling water inside?

    • @MossHomeandGarden
      @MossHomeandGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Дякуємо Володимире!
      The 'magic teapot' is a Still Spirits Air Still, the copper tubes are inside the lid of the still, they are cooled by a fan. Best wishes to you!

      @@MossHomeandGarden yes, this is medical distiller, as says in UA-internet-shops. And copper tube is just device for control spirit degrees and no need to be cooled.
      I just make blackberry port wine and trying to find reciepe for making a Calvados, it may be mor interesting, than Brandy from classic receipes. But good Calvados in UA now is very expensive, this is reason for trying to find good receipe and Your one i like!

    • @MossHomeandGarden
      @MossHomeandGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a licence to buy the still, the actual legality is a slightly grey area. I don't make spirits to sell, and I only make 5-6 litres a year if that, my films are for demonstration purposes only :)

    To tone that down next time just try a couple of teaspoons of that particular oak and it's rather nice if you put the oak under the grill on a piece of tinfoil to toast it.

    Generally it's so called foreshore and heads you would get rid of more than anything for the spikey unpleasantness of it rather than safety as there is little methanol in the foreshore and also you will find methanol traces in the hearts and the tails as it doesn't always evaporate at the beginning of distillation so unless you were to take the foreshore and heads from several runs and make a habit if drinking it you aren't in much danger of losing either your eyesight or your life. Bit it is best to taste the distillate as its coming off so you know when it loses its spikey alm I St nail polish remover like taste and smell and also during the run to define when it starts to get a tailsey smell and taste which will ruin your end product somewhat unless you find some flavour in the tails that you like.

    • @MossHomeandGarden
      @MossHomeandGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andy, your advice is greatly appreciated. I actually have been using the tails in bread recipes and it makes lovely tasting bread!

  • @andyn3532
    @andyn3532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also with an air still watch for your tails coming through at 40% at 20% you are probably well into your tails and feints

    • @MossHomeandGarden
      @MossHomeandGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I did wonder this, as the smell is very often like nail varnish remover, even at the higher ABVs, I've been triple distilling lately and it has improved the product.

    Your bottling percentage math is wrong. The easiest way to get it right is to work out the volume of pure alcohol and then figure out the percentage. 1200ml * 50% = 600ml of alcohol. 1500ml of final product with 600ml of alcohol is 600/1500 = 40% alcohol. If you wanted to figure out how much water (or juice) to add for a particular percent you would take the 600ml of alcohol and divide by the target percent to find the final volume target. To achieve 38.5%, 600ml / 0.385 = 1558ml, so you would need to add 1558ml - 1200ml = 358ml.
