Sydney Pigden's father was a milkman who fought in WWI and didn't have much money. Both parents died when he was 15, forcing him to drop out of school (despite being top of his class) to find work. His former headmaster was determined he get an education and funded him through evening classes, allowing him to get his school certificate. Sydney became a spitfire pilot in the RAF and fought in WWII aged just 17. After the war he married Aileen, a girl he met at a dance when stationed in Scotland and they had a son, who died shortly after birth. Aileen died in 1968 when he was just 46. Sydney became a teacher in 1949 and ended up teaching at Turnham junior school for 30 years. Later in life he donated his RAF mementoes to the Shoreham Aircraft Museum. Ian Wright grew up in a violent home. His dad was absent, his mother was alcoholic and his step-dad was abusive. Because of this, he was a difficult child at Turnham junior school. However, his teacher Mr Pigden taught him to read and write, "but most importantly how to keep calm and communicate with people instead of just flying off the handle". Sydney took young Ian under his wing and taught him discipline and respect, saying that if he was naughty he wouldn't get to play football. He gave Ian responsibilities like being milk monitor and collecting the register from the teachers, something that made Ian feel valued and important. Sydney was also Ian's first football coach and would encourage him not to blast the ball, but pass it into the net, "like Jimmy Greaves". Ian called it "a piece of advice that stayed with me my whole career". Ian Wright went on to become Arsenal's top scorer in their 100+ year history with 185 goals, only surpassed later on by the legendary Thierry Henry. When WWII ended, Sydney was chosen to do the WWII Victory celebration fly-past over Buckingham Palace, aged only 23. Despite this, he said that the proudest moment of his life was seeing Ian play football for England. Sydney Charles Pigden died on Dec 27, 2017. He went from Ian “the grown man” back to the young boy Ian in an instant. We need more Mr. Pigden’s in this world. This is what it looks like to invest into our youth. ❤
It’s not that we need more Mr. Pigden’s, it’s we need to start promoting these people in the world more so then pushing negativity. But I agree with you, invest in you, and help restore the faith of the middle aged group that not everything is going to shit.
I knowww and that was the tear jerker for me. It shows what lies beneath every man’s exterior. My heart grew three sizes watching this, utterly wholesome.
We just need more fathers. Less mothers who see them as just a "donor" and a paycheck. We need faith and family. The powers that be dont want that though. They want you a slave to them. They want you materialistic and alone.
It hard to have shock, disbelief, relief and love on your face at the same time but this young man made it happen. I would love to hear the whole story about these two men. I bet it would make your heart cry and rejoice at the same time.

That is true and some bitch teachers pay to much. $10 × 30 children × 6 hrs a day for 5×140 days equals $210,000. The amount your babysitter would get paid if a teacher. Does not count the prep hours or grading papers. Now if it was at the teachers pay rate would be ~$600,000. Just a thought.

Everytime. Yeah like Tyson, to be able to see them again just 1 more time and to say they're proud of you. This interaction always warms my soul. Ian is very lucky and I'm glad this beautiful moment was captured. God bless Mr Pigden ❤
There are instructors, teachers, and mentors. Instructors tell you by the book so you can pass their class and get a certificate, and so they can get paid. Teachers educate you with knowledge. Mentors temper that knowledge with wisdom. Mr. Pigden is of the latter category.
Second time I've seen this and each time it brings tears to my eyes, you can see wrighty love this wonderful man. I had someone like him in my life back in the day. 💯🙏🏿♥️🇯🇲

Not just a figure, the the power of a father. We as men are to be the father’s of all the fatherless. This is what makes a man complete. Fatherhood for all that need it.
These kids Bang on about Respect.. They need to take notes from Ian. Takes off hat then calls him MR Pigden..NoW that's PROPPER respect... HATS OFF TO IAN 👌
According to who and what and where? Have you ever questioned these things? Humans have created these weird ass "ethics". Removing your fucking hat is respect? C'mon now... It's not the 1100s anymore.
Please know that no matter what... there's always one student that still remembers you even in their adulthood. I still remember 2 of my primary school teachers till this day. They pushed me hard and made me angry but every time i succeeded they were the first ones to know.
This is one of my favourite all time videos on TH-cam . I love his genuine expressions of tears, joy and excitement when he saw Mr Pigden. He clearly has a love and respect for his by the swift manner in which he removed his hat and broke down in tears whilst hugging him. Ian Wright was an incredibly, fantastically talented footballer.
The amount of depth, emotion, and disbelief when he says, “You’re alive.” You can hear his emotion in his voice. To be able to see someone so influential in your life, once more, after thinking they are gone. It’s a pain many have felt, and few get to experience.
This is the most touching thing I've ever seen. The happiness when greeting, the humility of Ian removing his hat, the cracking in his voice. This was amazing.
And from him, "done so well with yourself" had absolutely nothing to do with fame, money, or football. It had to do with happiness, growth, freedom, and being a good person. Those are the things we learn from the very best teachers, who are valuable beyond compare.
One of the most wholesome videos in the Internet. Ians eyes when he recognises Sydney. Beautiful moment in both of their lives. Rest in peace to Mr Pigden
You don't in Britain generally either, although kids raised without dad's and kids already on a bad path, won't do it to any strangers, and only the adults who have tried to help them in some way. Occasionally they stay on, if the kid is homeless, and the hat is mainly to cover the dirty/greasy hair. But it's something that's still taught around where I live, and many places I've been around the country. Oh, also if its -10 or they're wearing a beanie, don't expect them to lose a load of heat to say hello if you don't know them personally. Actually that probably means more people don't than do....... Hmmm NEVERMIND. but it does still exist, esoteric in his age range
You can tell by his voice in that "hello Ian" he must of been the kindest soul. A rare jem. A once bright light in this dark world. So happy Ian was blessed to have him as a role model. ❤
The initial look on his face when he removed his cap had me tearing up man. The flood of emotion from the encouragement Ian must have received from this man at a critical age is still as palpable to him as ever. Amazing how something so simple can strike something so deep inside of us. Thanks for sharing.

Teachers educate you with knowledge.
