    I love all the travel tips! But one pro tip I have is bring nail clippers instead of scissors. You can use them to cut yarn and they are both TSA and customs friendly.

      Nail clippers are my go-to for travel, too.

    Hi Gary, loved watching your trip visiting Crystal. Rolling your clothing can help reduce the area you use in your luggage bag. Here in Australia you are not allowed knitting needles, scissors ✂️, here in Australia going Qantas we are allowed 1 luggage up to 23kg free, 1 carry on small luggage bag with rollers size allocated for the & its 7kg, also 1 bag like for carrying a coat or suit.
    Then if you want to pay for extra you can like an xtra bag that goes in the cargo hold on the plane with your suitcase. It can different everywhere you go, so best to check. ❤❤

    I think it's been over 40 years since I've flown....I'm a road warrior!! 🤣😂🤣😂
    I love to drive, a 12-13 hour trip is a piece of cake. (usually California to Idaho).
    Sometimes "space bags" can be hand rolled to get the air out, no pump needed. I think they are classified as a travel type bag.

    • @urbanyarn

    Very helpful info Gary! When I traveled a-lot, I brought one carry on and one checked bag.
    On the return, I purchased on extra bag for new purchases and checked that on the return. If you do that next time, you’d have the extra space in your original bag to.
    Another tip is if you stay at a place where there’s laundry facilities. You can pack less, and do one load of wash mid-trip.
    As for the ‘space saver’ plastic bags, they’re also available in roll up form, eliminating the need for a pump. 👍

    • @urbanyarn
      @urbanyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Sandi - You are so right with doing laundry while away to save on packing so many clothes. I stayed in a hotel that had guest laundry machines to use with coins. I think on the next trip - I'd take less clothes and do what you suggested.

    I went to Finland for a week last January and stayed in Air B&B. All my clothes and toiletteries went into hand luggage and that went into the big suitcase into the hold. I have learned to travel without a kitchen sink. I was also allowed a small handbag for my purse, tickets, phone and headphones.
    I packed small bits of scrap yarn and a wooden hook to make a couple of granny squares The trip was only a couple of hours and I cannot do anything but pay attention to my ears on take off and landing and watch the view.
    On the way back, my big suitcase was full of yarn, sweets, cheese and bread - I spent more on yarn, sweets, and bread than the rest of the year!
    I had been planning to bring a few bottles of duty free booze from airport but my flight was so late all the shops were closed. Luckily I had bought a bottle of liquorice vodka which was quite enough. 😊 (Finland is the land of salted liquorice, not the table salt kind you'll find in Denmark. Normal liquorice is great but the salted kind is an acquired taste.)
    It's not just the customs you have to think of: long needles and Tunisian hooks are just too invasive and intimidating to the person sitting next to you, especially on budget planes. Unless you sit between your siblings you want to annoy. ;)

    • @urbanyarn
      @urbanyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Claptrap for sharing your recent travel experience to Finland!
      Your packing sounds very sensible and I loved that you could bring back so many great treats and reminders of those places you visited in your case. Finland is one place we have on our list to get to - though I think we'll do a cruise in the Baltic Sea to hit a few of the countries around that area.
      Hope you are well and enjoying that salted liquorice - it sounds better than the Dutch Salt Drops (which I love).

    International travel is great for taking a sewing, knitting or crocheting project with you. I’ve never had a crochet hook taken at any airport. I don’t knit, so don’t know about that. I’ve been to England, Germany, Kazakhstan, China. One time I had a zippered pouch full of beads that I stitched onto some cloth for a mermaid tail I was making for one of my grandkids. That could have been a disaster, but it was okay because I didn’t spill them. I have a tiny sewing kit that has pins, needles, stitch markers and a really tiny scissors. It’s a magnetic metal box, so maybe the X-ray can’t see inside. Anyway I never get stopped.

      @urbanyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow - I'm so impressed the places you've seen and visited. Thank you for sharing your experiences while you crafted and traveled on plane trips. I particularly liked how you managed to keep all those beads together and not scattered. Good work!

    I took my metal Clover Amour hooks with me to London and Portugal and security didn't give them a second look. My Fiskar children's safety scissors were a different story. My bag was pulled at Heathrow both coming and going so that they could measure the blades. Because they were less than two inches, I got to keep them, but it was a slow process and I was happy we didn't have a tight connection. Next time I will just take nail clippers.

    • @urbanyarn
      @urbanyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Karen for sharing your recent airport experiences - I had something like that happen to me when I went to Florida in July of 2022. Hi Gary! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. I haven’t been to Canada in quite some time but this information is always good to know. When I was watching your videos the first thing I thought about was customs. Then you said you’d be making this video so I knew I’d get my answers, lol. I miss the good ole days when no airline charged for luggage. Too bad those days are over. You were very well prepared which is always a good thing. I think your purchase of the bag for yarn was a very smart move. I’m so happy you had a good time and didn’t pay ridiculous prices to ship the yarn home. If you ever get to the Boston area just let me know. We have great yarn shops here too! You’d always be welcome here!😊❤️

    I always wear or carry one of those necklace or brooch things that will cut yarn. Then I don’t have to worry about it much. Also works when I’ve had jury duty. Can’t take scissors or nail clippers or anything. They will allow me a pair of circular needles but not straight ones. I’m not sure about crochet hook. I’ve used the duffel bag trip many times when I’ve traveled. Not just for yarns. When we went overseas I packed one so we could bring our extra purchases back in. There were 3 of us and we packed our stuff all together. Mostly put dirty laundry in duffle and other things in my hard suitcase and carry on. In Greece I brought back some pottery and a couple paintings. In Ireland and Scotland it was yarn and wool. My daughter brought back some beautiful stuff same way way when she was in peace corp

    • @urbanyarn
      @urbanyarn  ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the details. I've never been to Canada, even tho it's close. At Dollar tree there are vacuum bags for a dollar twenty five each and you don't need a pump, you just use a vacuum cleaner to collapse them. Maybe your host can seal them for you before you leave😉

    As someone who has bought alot of goods on travel outside Canada, it helps to be really organized with you purchases and receipts - just in case customs officials want to go through your bags. Sometimes they won't charge duties if you are over by a little.
    Bringing back alcohol, tobacco products, firearms and fireworks is when it can get intense ... or when the dog starts sniffing your luggage. Speaking as a witness, that is, not a participant that is.
    So glad to hear you had a great trip and looking forward to more.

    Interesting Travel Tips. I am flying Emirates via Dubai to the UK and its been a while, so I will have to do some checking of the regulations. When flying in the states, you can carry a small bag that can fit underneath your seat, and what is called a "carry-on" that fits in the overhead compartment (I fly Delta mostly). I plan on going over to Windsor from Detroit, Michigan in June, to this has been invaluable information; thank you for sharing!

They were flagged by the scanners and measured - fortunately they were allowed to pass because they were under that size. Phew (I would have been heartbroken to have lost them).

    The prise you paid to get your bag on the plane was reasonable, our son paid £80.00 to get his bag out to Israel on a works trip, then it cost him 125.00$ to get it back..
    Don't know the exchange for that, but he gets it all back on expensives.
    This was very informative and well worth knowing. ❤

      Hi Shirley - thanks for sharing your son's experience with having to pay for luggage. That is a very large sum when considering adding to the cost of the ticket itself. Thankfully it can be reimbursed to him as a company expense.

    Hi Gary
    I love n Ontario.
    I only cost 32$ to order 150$ in yarn.
    No duty fees right to my door!

      This is a great value of postage cost for the yarn. I like when there's no duties.

    Hi Gary, I like all the interesting tips you have on traveling from the USA to Canada. I know certain airlines have baggage restrictions and fees, and I used to work for one. Do you have trouble buying yarn from Canada? I'm just curious?? I hope all is well and stay safe.

      Hello Dianna - yarn is readily available in Canada, but not all the yarn. Some stores in the States don't ship to Canada (or anywhere internationally). Others do offer only a selection of their collections that they will send over the boarder. I did go there with a list of things not available for shipping into Canada. I do like to support Canadian Mills as well (which are few - Briggs and Little is one I like to support).

      Hi Rainey - the topic is traveling with yarn crafts (but normally I show what I've been making). There were many questions from the previous videos concerning my trip that I thought it needed a separate video.

      Hi Laura, you're lucky to have been without any confiscation. I've read some messages that small scissors were confiscated.

    Hi Gary,
    I’ve enjoyed watching your channel since your visit with Crystal from bag o day. She is amazing and taking a break from her channel. How can we help her like she helps so many????? Maybe ask your followers to watch like and subscribe so her views don’t dip. I really appreciate you guys and my yarn adventures wouldn’t be the same without ya ✌️🧶❤️

    Could u take metal hooks on the plane or did u have to take plastic or wooden ? Was just wondering with how much everything has changed it's almost like a bra isn't aloud cu it sets the metal detector off 😂🤣

      LOL - Thanks Jessica for that comment. I cannot speak to all airport security measures or what airlines have for themselves - but it's always best to check in with them before traveling on the types of things you can take with you as carry on items.
