One of my fondest memories is when Denis DiBlasio was playing for Maynard and they came to a local high school. As they played the last song, Hey Jude, they all came walking down the aisles. To my great joy, DiBlasio stopped right by me. As a young musician, playing Bari myself, it was a thrill to hear him up close. Thank you for posting this!

Not only is Mr. DiBlasio a helluva a jazz musician and wise educator, but his own TH-cam channel shows him to possess a great sense of humor with a self-deprecating wit alongside an intuitive caring nature. I'm sure his students all love him.

I got to see him perform with Maynard at Ronnie’s in the early 2000s. He stole the show with his bari, flute & scatting, & was so charming & humorous. Genius

Famously someone told Bird as he was playing tenor "Man, this instrument wasn't made for playing so fast!"...Thanks Goodness nobody told Mr Diblasio the same thing about his speed in playing baritone!!

I find it amazing that people judge 2 masters of their ART. No one is perfect. If you were any better at what you do, you wouldn’t have commented. Think about that

These men are great artists but all I hear is the same 12 notes over and over again-don’t think I could take an hour of that!
But seriously. Listening to Bergonzi is like being on the world’s tallest roller coaster. You can almost feel the g-force! I saw him in Boston years ago. Was sitting up front-one of the most mind blowing experiences I’ve ever had. Only criticism here is that I wish he had gone a few more choruses.

What tenor model is Bergonzi playing here? (with the lowest note keys located on the opposite side of the bell)

That up tempo was not the best idea for the soloists (and the audience), especialy for the baritone who is not a real soloist, no vocabulary at all, Bergonzi has been always a great one.

By the way- DiBlasio stumbles, falls out of the pocket roughly between 1:00 and 1:03. Sticks out like a sore thumb. And Bergonzi and guitarist exchanges a quick knowing glance! I’m not knocking DiBlasio. It’s a very fast tempo ( I’d be stumbling all over the place at this tempo). Rather this is a testament to what a precise grammar bebop employs-when its right it’s right, when it’s wrong it’s wrong. Did DiBlasio intentionally play that phrase? Maybe, maybe not. But that’s not the point. Instead the point here, and my reason for calling this out is actually to show the beauty and precision of this art form. The Blasio comes out, playing straight up, bebop then what happens at that roughly 1 minute mark is a clear deviation from bebop syntax. Bergonzi hears it, the guitarist years it’s and it’s unmistakable. And it just shows what an absolutely precise language the language of bebop is. Period.

A typical comment from someone who should stay quiet. If this band were all women or all black, he'd say they were "Killing It"! But because he sees some gray hairs, he thinks it's OK to Boomer Bash?! Hypocrite!
