I love this channel. Nothing pretentious about oil painting, no unnecessary empty talk. Just straight to the point "this is what I do and what works for me". Take all my likes.
Totally agree best teaching painting channel. I've seriously been looking for a channel like this for over TWO YEARS, but of course there was lot of content and tutorials, but never ever ever exactly what I needed or looked for. Until NOOOOOW, so haaaappg
However long you've been painting it's always good to go back over basics from time to time. The way you approach a subject is great to watch, love your work as well.
I am an amateur painter and have no desire to ever be anything more. I do it for fun and don't want to turn it into work like a professional. With that being said and make no mistake I do want get better and always learn new stuff. I have watched quite a few of your videos and like them very much and intend to watch the rest of them. I like the way you seem to cut through the difficulties and complexities and explain things in a manner even I can understand :-) And aren't afraid to share the areas of struggle. Thank you for your hard work in making these videos. Don't think they are not appreciated, I do appreciate them.
Literally this is gonna make my paintings soo much better. I ve been drawing for a couple of years but I am a complete beginner at color mixing and this helped a lot
Love this video! I challenged myself a few years ago to only buy the primary colors and mix from that. I've spent the last 5 years working with only primaries and it's developed my color mixing skill so much! But there is still so much I can learn, and i always find your videos when I need a quick guide. Thank you for all your work and knowledge!
Wow! Thank you so much for your video! I’m colorblind and I work restoring shoes, sometimes it’s difficult for me to find the right ways to color match and your video helped me so much!!
I’m in the middle of painting a portrait which is going rather well considering that I’m a landscape painter, but I cannot for the life of me mix a proper skin tone! Even using the primary’s, they’re all turning out too gray and dull. I have a rather tan and warm complexion, and my portrait is missing that spark of life in the skin. This video really helped a lot. I always come to your channel only when I need tips. I love how you don’t have a 3 minute long intro and how you don’t go on rants about other shit, you’re just straight to the point and extremely easy to understand. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’ve helped me improve a lot! Sending love from Canada❤️
I wish I saw this when I decided to get into art and digital paint back in 2020. It would have saved me a lot of time. I like using the mixing pad instead of color picking or color wheel. I still had a job at the time lol. I didn't find this channel until they cut us all and I started searching like June or July. I thank you for expanding my art skills. It gave me something to look forward to when everything else looked bleak.
This man is literally amazing! I started watching his videos since probably like November and I am loving his videos especially the paint talk videos and how he makes everything clear and how he explains it! his voice is so soothing! He gives so much advice to everyone! Thank You!
Dead on imitation of the president, I laughed so hard coffee came out my nose! By the way , love ur videos ur my absolute #1 oil painting coach , I’ve only been painting for 2 months but I have gotten so much better just from watching your videos and listening to ur advice! Thank you! P.S I love how you really explain painting like it’s football....it makes it so easy to understand.
Hahahaha, Same exakt thing here 😂😂😂😂i just spit out my coffee, couldn’t believe it. I’m just starting with oils. And the fumes of the Terpentine bother me that much, and I can’t get some things here in Germany you use there, so I just found schmincke medium w. Hope I can go on now.
That helped me. I’m going to mix my own paint color swatch for my walls in my house, and this helped me remember color theory from art class in college. Thank you! What fun!
I’m new to oil painting and got my supplies all I need is paint thinner and canvas panels. Your videos are the best and well explained and straight forward. I’m looking forward to more videos from you.
Without doubt my favourite painting channel. Did my first oil painting today after delaying for too long… Chris, you are my ‘go to’ for advice on all thing oil. Excellent content 👏👏👏
I really love your painting and I think this one is the 20th video I watch when I should be watching this first coz its what I need, color mixing. Im an acrylic lover but basically the principles are the same. Thank you for the free tutorial, I hope that you have more than patreons to cover us who can't afford to be one. hehe.
Wow! Love the way you explained the colors. I finally untherstand how to do it. You explain with no Complications. Thank you so so mush. I sensed your videos on my Email , to look at it tomorrow. You give me the desire to paint ever day, thanks again X And I started to draw again, love it.
Your horse in the background looks fantastic, that would be great to see a tutorial on, I am in the middle off learning pencils drawings of horses, really hard but getting there
Mixing colors ALWAYS was my weakest link and I was desperately waiting for a video that does not just explain how to mix colors but 'how to get to one color from another'. Subscribed :)
Yes, same here. This video was helpful compared to many others I've watched on color mixing. You say that color mixing WAS your weakest link. So does that mean you have gotten better with it and did this video help you with that? Color mixing is my current weakest link but I'm working on it.
Such a useful video! Chris is not only a good painter but an amazing teacher! I've always thought mixing colors is a complicated thing, but he just explains it in such an easy way to understand. Thanks a lot for this video!
This is the best video I've seen on color mixing. This has been a huge eye opener for me. I've taken these tips and am on my way to my first painting with using only the primaries and it's going fabulous
This is amazing! I'm only just starting with mixing colors, and with barely any fundamentals so what you've demonstrated is really mind-blowing. Thank you for sharing your technique! The way you present it is really approachable and encouraging for me to experiment with.
thank you a lot your videos are helping me a lot with my studying, i'm a fine arts student painting department, THANK YOU SO MUCH, LIKE YOU ARE ME HERO
LOVED YOUR VIDEOS! I started painting portraits and i saw all sorts of videos where they used like tons of colors. And then at the end of the day i felt like i'm nowhere. This really helped, thanks a lott
Man thank you so much. I have been struggling and struggling with getting a certain colour when my pallet has burnt umber, white, cad yellow deep, ultramarine blue, cad red, quinachronome magenta, etc etc etc. It makes it so hard to figure out what would change what I'm working with to match my reference. You are the boss today.
This was very helpful. I will start off with one color...by the time I finish I have a huge pile of the right color! But at least I'm getting there. I rarely use the same pallet of color. I just use what the picture needs. Perhaps I should rethink this. Thank you!
You have an awesome channel. I gotten back into painting and am learning the ins and out of oils. YOU ARE SO GOOD at explaining things! Thanks for being fun and not boring. p.s. good impression there in the begining
Thank you so much for all your content! My painting definitely improved since I started watching your channel and I love the way you explain everything. Would it be possible to make a video on portrait backgrounds (tips on which colors to use, how to do it, when it is appropriate, the lighting, etc.) It would be awesome :)
What are your suggestions for preventing colors from getting too muddy? Phenomenal polo player in the background, perhaps a tutorial on that painting when you have time.
The complimentary colour of any of these paints is a mix of the other two - if that helps anyone. So, compliment yellow with red + blue, compliment red with yellow + blue, compliment blue with red + yellow. Whichever you’re complimenting just mix the two others.
I know this video came out 3 years ago, but I have a question and I'm struggling to find the answer. How do I lighten or darken the value of an oil paint mixed color without changing the color too much? Just the value, not the color so much. Is it possible? If it's a stupid question, know that I haven't worked with color hardly at all. I've made 2 still life paintings and one self portrait painting but I really messed up the colors and values in it. I know I jumped into a complicated portrait too quick, but I figure I can look back in a few months and see the progress I have made if I become discouraged. I try to avoid using black whenever I can, but is it okay to use it in a color mixture? Can I use black to darken a shade without making to colors off? My main goal is to be able to produce simplified landscapes and portraits alla prima method because I'm impatient.
Chris, have you ever tried using a primary palette of Quinacridone Magenta, Cobalt Teal, and Arylide Yellow? It's really fun to use, you should make a video of yourself trying to do color mixing with those. You have to mix your reds and blues, it's really different and fun :)
I love this channel. Nothing pretentious about oil painting, no unnecessary empty talk. Just straight to the point "this is what I do and what works for me".
Take all my likes.
I gotta say best painting channel in whole TH-cam, I love the way you explain and I understand easily, thanks for your time
Seableking thanks! I really appreciate it!
The best for sure 🙏

I really love your no bullshit approach to painting.
Thank you, my painting-game really improved since I started watching your videos.
That approach is the whole reason I started the channel. Thanks for the support!

this was actually EXTREMELY helpful
I love listening to Chris! He really knows how to explain the painting process. I have learned so much much from him!
Oh man. The complimentary color to dull and add realism to the mix is an amazing tip. Way to open my eyes
Literally this is gonna make my paintings soo much better. I ve been drawing for a couple of years but I am a complete beginner at color mixing and this helped a lot
Glad I could help!

Outstanding. Clear instructions and very encouraging- every teacher should teach this way.
This is the best explained video I’ve seen and also it’s not boring me while you explain😂😂
Wow! Thank you so much for your video! I’m colorblind and I work restoring shoes, sometimes it’s difficult for me to find the right ways to color match and your video helped me so much!!
WOW! This is sooooooo helpful. I could mix easy approximate colors but never understood how to get "exact" matches. Thank you. :)
i’m an absolute beginner and your videos are so helpful. Thanks for all of the advice, you have no idea how useful it’s been
This is the single greatest video on colours I've seen no cap

I'm new to oils and your channel. Your voice and no-nonsense, approachable style is 110% for me. Thanks
Honestly probably one of the best youtube videos for understanding colors, definitely subscribed!!
Love it! Unnecessary wasted 100s of dollars for buying all the colors, now on buying 4 colors only. Thank you :)
This man is literally amazing! I started watching his videos since probably like November and I am loving his videos especially the paint talk videos and how he makes everything clear and how he explains it! his voice is so soothing! He gives so much advice to everyone! Thank You!

@@ceedee743 don't use turpentine, use odourless mineral spirits from an art shop; or even better, use water soluble oils.
The best painting channel
My personal favourite palette is yellow ochre, cadmium red, ultramarine, burnt umber and titanium. This is all i have ever needed for portraits.
The BEST explanation ever on color mixing!
That helped me. I’m going to mix my own paint color swatch for my walls in my house, and this helped me remember color theory from art class in college. Thank you! What fun!
I have learned more about mixing colors in this 10 min than in any full length art class I’ve ever had
I’m new to oil painting and got my supplies all I need is paint thinner and canvas panels. Your videos are the best and well explained and straight forward. I’m looking forward to more videos from you.

Great tips! I never would've thought of these.

Thank you for your valuable information 👍🏻🙏🏻
I love your tutorials! Keep it up
Thanks for this. I'm trying to repair an antique painted clock dial. It is rather a dirty white with a sniff of green.
i love the paint your laptop, very relatable btw very helpful videos!!
I agree, best painting tutorials on line. Please can we have one on choosing portrait backgrounds and on glazing portraits, when to and how to.
