By January 2019, after 7 world cup seasons, Defago had never been on a downhill podium (he had a few in SuperG). Then he won Wengen and Kitzbühel within a week. One year later he got Olympic gold in downhill. Before retiring he added Bormio, for a total of 4 downhill wins. Now, 4 wins is not a lot, many people have more than that, but when those 4 are the most important race there is, and the 3 most iconic courses in alpine skiing, you can definitely speak of quality over quantity.
Miller's run for bronze at 25:55, Svindal silver 43:50, Defago gold 48:50. Interesting that all medalists were totally under the radar coming to Vancouver. But years of experience, lots of downhill success in the past and excellent giantslalom skills worked for them. Technical knowledge was needed for a medal so the classic downhillers like Cuche, Kroell and Walchhofer who were top ranked favorites didn't really stand a chance. Tightest downhill ever, medalists separated by only 0.09 second.
I was not a downhill racer but I was a downhill skier. It seems that the downhill race is more like a giant slalom now. I (vaguely) recall downhill races in the 70 and 80's where the skiers had few gates and went where the quick line was.
Don't forget that there are four kinds of skiing contested at the Olympics: Alpine (this), Nordic (cross-country, jumping, and combined), freestyle, and snowboarding.
They can train in Australia as there are quite a few ski resorts in NSW, Victoria, Tazmania and ACT. Don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if they train with other countries too, which isn't uncommon.
Respect the Drip Karen Not at all. Good technique. I could have skied in an ice rink if they tipped it up on edge. Of course good files to keep the edges sharp helps too.
+pitot1988 After looking over some race results and their venues, average speeds for the whole run can vary from 61-67 mph plus. Considering this includes the start and having to make turns, it's no wonder why some call this the original extreme sport. It's one thing to go 80-100 mph straight, it's another to survive a turn at 60 -70 mph, which is why I'd much rather watch and partake in downhill ski racing than speed skiing.
Billy Johnson was clocked at 160km/hr down the sewer. Part of this track which was considered the 3rd favorite on tour. This is the Olympic so very sanitized course, so more racers from different country can do it. And by the way the world record for speed on skis is a bit over 250km/hr.
No Downhill suits aren't padded, just the ones for the slower disciplines like Slalom or GS. Downhill skiers need to resist a lot of forces especially in the turns due to the high speed. Thats why they also need to be quite bulky, especially their legs and core muscles
Neil Baker i dont know if you ever wore a Downhill suit, but if you did you would know that they are indeed skin tight. Racers even say they are their 2nd skin
Neil Baker Yes they are skin tight spandex. I have an old, black Descente suit in my closet right now. Generally we would only wear long underwear and a shirt under out “zoot suits” while racing. GS and slalom suits have some arm padding, but the SG/downhill suits had no padding at all.
i want to be in the skiing olympics someday. but i'll have to practise alot more considering i go 0.0001 km's per hour T^T lol jk. but i can't go on the Black Diamond runs yet...
Haha, or "Love Shack", "Weasel", and "Boyd's Chin". They did that for giggles, right? It must have been pretty hilarious to hear the person doing the commentary say, "AAAAND he's going down Boyd's Chin", or something similar.
I live in the tropics but I love cold weather and winter Olympics better than any other sport!!!

i love skiing so much and i want to be an olympic skier when i am older this totally rocks
Still at it? I watch this and find it terrifying.
Hope you'll be a norwegian contender! ☝️😌
I love skiing too but this is something else
Your comment is 11 years old - did you make it?
The winner is a true Swiss guy: given name is French, surname sounds Italian and he speaks German.
lmfaooo yes
C'est un bon gars, un valaisan comme moi, on parle français dans la vallée mais on baragouine un peu d'allemand.
It's a real pain in the ass to try to live in Switzerland, but the flag is a big plus.
Its not italien surname..its swiss italian 😣😳
16:21 RIP N°3 David Poisson...
Nazwisko go chyba zatruło.
Watching without commentary is really weird
weird in a good way, instead of listening to a bunch of rattle can announcers...
@@Charleybones yea
@@Charleybones Good commentators improve the experience.
@@musicmanalex1 Yes, "good" ones do.
we Canadians.. gives you the new experiences !
Thanks for not showing the last two skiiers.
Bode Miller is 6x Olympic medalist from Team USA Alpine Skiing.

Bode's run starts at 25:24 in this vid.

Is snowboarding skiing?
Super-Didi gegen Super-Didi ... einfach genial, Hopp Schwiiz!
Anyone else notice there’s no commentating?
How can you say no to this much skiing?

I didn't even know about his tragic accident. He seemed a really likable sort.
Nice downhill.
NEEDS MORE COW BELL !
Caramba! Essa olimpíadas eu vi quase toda! Passava na Record na época
Terrific event ! Somebody please tell me about the constant sound of helicopters ….
지금봐도 재밌네
I like how Bode is calm while his coach is yelling some final words to charge him before the race.
Where do the Аustralian skiers train?

New Zealand. NZ has great mountains with snow
There's some snow fields in Victoria and New South Wales, not many or top quality.
+Mario Smilkov in britisch colombia were all the good guys train :)
I work at Snow Basin Utah and there is a bunch of the olympic team members training there now.
Good morning
what trail is this? Peak to Greek?
bode was up over a half second on the eventual winners at the second time check, then lost it all by the third. wonder if he made a mistake somewhere.
pitot1998 around 100 km/h or so
Can someone tell me why the last two competitors (Andrej Drygin and Stepan Zuev) aren't in the video?
I'm sure there is a huge mysterious cover-up behind that.
@@matic7589 :D
I know they need ice for that speed, but I just cringe whenever you hear that scrape.
MPrime I know right I’m over here thinking that must be hell to ski on

2020!
2021!
How far apart are the blue lines? I'm guessing 10 meters. If someone knows please post it.
This video isn't working for me :(
What's that ringing noise?
@51:04 bring on the cow bell
how fast are they going?
That track is slow 100-120 km/h.
In European tracks like Kitzbuhel or Wengen they can reach speed up to 160 km/h. World record is 161.9 km/h.
Collide Planetsing dang thats crazy that this track is slow cuz they look like they are flying! i cant imagine what a faster track would look like lol
About 80 miles an hour in some spots.

Anyone remember watching the downhill races before they had the pretty blue lines? ...and they still went balls out screaming down the mountain!! lol
Bode-Totally railed the top 3 intervals with fast skis and then...slower skis, scrubbed speed or out of gas on 4-5 intervals? Great racing!
That speed.....
It was way more fun and exciting to ‘race’ before the blue guidelines.
yeah really how can you say no to this much skiing
feels bad to lose by 0.07
they all look pudgy?? maybe they need the weight to go fast against the wind
Ski race suits are not skin tight spandex, they are fairly thick and padded....ski racers are generally pretty skinny and ropey people.
No Downhill suits aren't padded, just the ones for the slower disciplines like Slalom or GS. Downhill skiers need to resist a lot of forces especially in the turns due to the high speed. Thats why they also need to be quite bulky, especially their legs and core muscles
Ski racers are not skinny at all younger people are but thoes guys at that level have no fat all muscle

This run would take me 4 minutes of panicking on the steep parts
Most likely more. Those slopes are hard as ice and very slippery
The scary part is you can't even, your skis need speed to bite in.
This seems more like a super G. They are going edge to edge pretty quick a couple times for DH. and there's not really a true majestic flight.
I know that Bode Miller should win this DH title in Vancouver 2010 (y) :D
