- Millions of Americans are leaving their jobs in what economists are calling "the great resignation".
2021 has seen a huge number of people in the US change their careers - last month four million quit their jobs.
BBC's US correspondent Michelle Fleury went to meet people in Kentucky, where people are quitting at a higher rate than in many other states.

@@potter5647 Well, back in the day I took macroeconomics, polysci, systems analysis and design. I also built up my education fund starting age 5 picking fruit and moved up from there. I'm retired now, my worst day retired is better than my best day working.
I've ended buying Iphones, name brand clothes and accessories, ended my Amazon account, ended Netflix, HBO, Disney. This is something that I continue to strive for. There are more economical alternatives that do support the consumer instead of filling the wallets of corporate giants. When one starts supporting local and small businesses that treat their employees right, it feels better and creates a better community.
The right of workers to earn a living wage, have safe working conditions and live with dignity should always be respected and upheld.

It is a bad term, because it implicitly suggests that people can't afford to "live" and yet, every single working person I have ever seen was living. When you say a "living wage" you mean a "higher wage".
It isn't just a living wage though!! Hell I wouldn't mind earning a "decent paycheck" but when you have to work nearing 80 hours a week and you are missing out on your daughters' girl scout events and your sons football games doesn't make work worth doing!! And honestly having to blow off your wedding anniversary because you were told you have to "stay an extra four hours tonight", doesn't make you a better employee either!! Especially if you are not going to see another extra thin dime of pay increase to your own income for "helping the company out"!! Sure you might get the "overtime pay" but that is a "one time thing"!! And it still doesn't replace watching your babies first steps, or skip mowing the lawn for another week, because you have to spend all day Saturday stuck at work to meet a deadline YOU DID NOT CREATE!
And many companies today give you medical insurance packages that actually cost you money directly out of your paycheck!! And when you go to take little Timmy to the doctor, your boss tells you "You can take him to the doctor, but you might not have a job when you come back!" so basically you are paying for medical insurance you are not even allowed to us!! BUT the government demands your company offer you the insurance so you are stuck in a constant Catch 22 with it!!
Managers have seem to have lost human compassion and empathy. How could you threat someone’s job when their daughter may have cancer and miss peoples funerals. Simply unbelievable. Treat your staff right and they will stay.
Big difference between management and leadership. Most "managers" have no leadership qualities at all - simply bullying and nagging your staff while micromanaging them and deliberately avoiding rewarding their successes is NOT "leadership". Not even close.
Terrible "managers" are one of the reasons im scared to get a job. Theyll make it out that I need to dedicate my life to it
The saying shit rolls down hill is in some cases. The owners and the ones above the manager have a lot to do with it too. They pressure the managers then the managers pressure the workers.
My husband became a manager last year and he treats everyone with respect, care and concern. He helps his workers when they have family issues or emergencies and tells them that family is more important than work and to go home early, etc. He also improves their mood as often as he can to help them have a positive attitude! However, upper management and corporate doesn't like this, they threatened to fire him if he didn't go back to his former position because he isn't the BULLDOG they want a manager to be. He didn't quit or step down and they've yet to fire him... His numbers are stellar and they really have no reason that's fire-able, other than being a caring manager. He's not happy with the job but he sees how needed he is to those under him.

They are not ashamed, because it is the norm in USA working culture. Just taking vacation time is seen as slacking at your job. It's the hampster wheel of hope, the American dream has evaporated. USA middle class life peaked in late 1950's. Check the data and see for yourself. People are tired of being called essential, yet being paid as if you're disposable.
My heart goes out to all those people who weren't treated as they should be in those jobs. They deserve better and I'm glad they took steps to get themselves out.
I quit my job because my boss was turning into a slave driver expecting me to do everyone else's job...
I demanded a raise or a promotion, he denied my request so I left the business... fast forward two months and he is now trying to negotiate my return...
It's not that he appreciates me or even that he has learned his lesson
It's just his desperation was outweighed by my resolve.
I quit my airport job for this reason, It was literally killing me. I run my own little store now, earn less but I am much happier and healthier.

I think one of the things that came out of the pandemic was people realizing the futility of working jobs that just don't pay the bills. If the option is to work and not be able to afford cost of living and not work and not be able to afford the cost of living then why work? A point of wage hopelessness and housing unaffordability has been reached that we are going to have a tough time coming back from. I work for a staffing agency hiring in one of these markets, and it's really tough finding people willing to work for even $25-$30/hr when the average house is over half a million dollars, and is snapped up by property management companies that can offer thousands cash above asking price to beat out "normal people" and then turn it around as a rental property for vacationers that is unaffordable for the local working population.

Sounds like FL, housing and cost of living is so high now. Jobs paying minimum wage, big companies snapping up housing way above asking price, then renting them out at inflated rental prices. Someone tell me how anyone is supposed to make a life, when they can’t even afford the basics?!

Make a petition and get signatures to put on the ballot, for the people to vote on, that requires residency for home ownership in the city/state. No person/entity/company, is allowed to own more than x amount of rental properties, etc.. If a house goes up for sale, the top bid from a resident gets the house, no non resident bids can be accepted if someone local bids on it. Be pretty easy to get the people to vote on something like this.

I walked off my job of 8 years this summer because I was simply being taken advantage of. My workload increased by like 4x and at times I was the only employee left, but my pay didn't increase at all. After a crazy week where I made the company a buttload of money and handled far more than I should, working 14 hour days, I got a bonus of 50$ in my check and a pat on the back. That was nearly the last straw. Employers profits are up and our wages are way down. Not to mention how the dollar has fallen in the past 2 years. I'm sick of it and I'm starting my own business. Ill never work for anyone else again. I'm not doing all the work while making pennies on the dollar.

Simple as this for me: I changed jobs after 20 months without being able to go home to see my family. The most important sentence I heard from the person who hired me at my current job was " There's nothing more important than health and family" I knew right there that he was the kind of person I wanted to work for.

Most times it amazes me greatly how I moved from an average lifestyle to earning over $63k per month, Utter shock is the word. I have understood a lot in the past few years that there are lots of opportunities in the financial market. The only thing is to know where to invest.

My friend's matron of honor passed away weeks before her wedding, she had cancer that took a turn for the worst. Her husband's employer didn't want to give him off for his wife's funeral because they said he used all his days off while she was sick. They told him he should have planned his time off better because he knew she was going to die. Luckily he took it further up the management chain and got his time off, bereavement leave is supposed to be separate from PTO time.
I'm from Brazil and I got laid off last year from my Executive Assistant job where I had 5 terrible bosses. It was the best thing that happened to me! Now I work from home teaching English to Portuguese native speakers. I don't get stuck in traffic, I go to the gym almost every day and cook myself healthy meals. So happy!!!

I was working 55 to 60 hours a week before the pandemic , once pandemic hit , I realized that being home with my wife and kids was far more valuable than anything in the world , so I cashed out my annuity acct to pay off my house and all our debt , I now have spent the last year only working 24 to 28 hours a week ! I plan to stay this way as long as possible. Me and my family are much happier !

I got money thrown at me at my last job because a grown man didn’t want to wait in line to pay for his food. It’s so degrading and it makes sense that so many people don’t want to deal with this anymore.
What was your job and who exactly threw the money at you if you don't mind me asking?
It reminds me of the grown man who went Karen (in this case "Kevin") on me because of the increase of food prices. We're a family business, if meat prices go up, our dishes need to go up and we only increased the food prices at most by about $1AUD, but majority of his favourite meals which him and his family eats, they were increased at most by about 50 cents AUD and his King prawns were increased by $1 AUD. Keep in mind, they're on welfare and they do work for in a nearby branch of a major retail chain as retail assistant and drive a car that takes up a lot of petrol. My own family did not support me because I exhibited a "bad attitude", ignoring the fact that I was initially polite, empathetic, I was a teen, I needed to go and study, I can't abandon the counter and he tried to act rude to get a better deal by wordlessly slipping another competitor's menu in front of my face and interrupting me with "look at the menu" whenever I tried to be professional and I tried to tell him we can't change the prices. At that point, my "bad attitude" which my family had an issue was me saying "I don't care" in response to his bad behaviour, I was sticking up for myself. They all knew what happened, because I explained, but they all focused on me saying "I don't care". I get much more intelligent feedback, understanding and support from people who aren't even my family in a non-family affiliated workplace.

After 16 years as a production Baker, I'm making the move into medical. It's surprising how much we tell ourselves we can't do something or a change is too risky, while other people can see our potential and will exploit us for 40+ hours a week.
As an American, I can say I was also one who quit my job. Didn't know I was joining some grand movement or anything. I just got sick of being treated last an asset rather than a person. If I tell you I can't work a certain day, I CAN NOT work that day. If I call in sick, don't try and guilt trip me into coming to work. If I need my schedule adjusted because I have important things to do and can only do them on one day, arrange my schedule the way I need it. When I worked at McDonalds in my early 20s, I used to tell them they needed me more than I needed them, I was far from lying or blowing smoke out my ass. It's beyond the pay at this point. Yes it would be great to make a living wage, but it would also be great to be treated like a god damn human being!!!!!!
People have spent decades being abused and harrassed by their employers. Low pay, little or no benefits? Do you blame them? Best thing you can do is tell your boss to shove it and walk.
My insurance deductible went from $3500 to $5000 for next year. But my hospital bill this past few months was $4500, covid. I was wondering how is this when my deductible is $3500? Oh, some doctor walked into your room and that doctor was out of network in a hospital that was in network. It's not just bosses, the whole system is a scam. I got a $0.45 cent raise for next year. But I actually like my job.
@@alanrogs3990 your absolutely right. Insurance is a scam and the healthcare system is not patient orientated. It is insurance orientated. The insurance company uses patients as pawns. Doctors and laboratories collect your co-payments and receive kickbacks and the insurance companies collect your premiums. If you ask a doctor if your insurance company sucks based upon coverage of tests, they will not tell you. They have a gag order under contract with the insurance company. They get bonuses from the insurance companies. It's a horrible corrupt system.

For those confused, America has no regulations like Europe & the UK. I once had someone die on the job and we kept working. People are quitting in huge amounts because we can’t do it anymore.

I'm working for a pharmaceutical company here in the UK. When the pandemic started, they changed our contracts and they made them worst. They took advantage of our fear and uncertainty. I'll probably quit in a few weeks time. The point is, i think that this case applies to many other companies therefore i'm not surprised many people are quitting
Companies should be customer centric for sure, but there should be mindfulness of the abuse customers impart on workers
It's crazy that so many of us have the same story. I worked for the same restaurant company for 32 years. The last 20, I spent as a general manager. I was forced to take a pay cut when Covid first started. Then I was furloughed. I worked 60-70 hours a week for 20 years. I missed anniversaries, birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas out of a misplaced sense of duty. Being furloughed was cool for 2 weeks. Then what? You go from working 70 hours a week to 0 hours per week, it fucks with you. That being said, I saw my family more during my one year of being furloughed than I did in 20 years combined. I found a job where I am paid hourly. I make like $100 less a week take home, but I also work 30 hours less a week and I am appreciated. The company I had worked for prior is now a dumpster fire and deserves every bit of it.
Sad story James, but so glad you've found something else. It just seems so foreign, I live in Australia and if we have too much holiday leave saved up we are forced to take time off.

I left my 50k a year job in the UK and moved to Sweden. It was the best thing I ever did. I have more time with my kids and I actually get to see them grow and develop. Now I work from home, i don't have to deal with crappy people face to face, and I live life at my own pace. My old bosses were toxic narcissistic weirdos, who promoted an unhealthy crabs in a barrel mentality in the workplace.
Even so you need an income to pay for your kids. Being childfree, I don't need so much income

I am a Lyft driver it is the third job I’ve ever done and quite frankly it’s the most easiest and less stressful job I’ve ever had. my last job I gave six years of my life at a military factory at age 23 and quit at age 29. my current job still Lacks the satisfactory benefits and personal needs like retirement and etc. but I just rather do something with my life that will not put stress on me and deal with hostile people and ratchet work environment
I really have a new found respect for people who stayed working at fast food places and grocery stores. They deal with some real scumbags day in and day out. Yet we really depend on them for food/ nourishment. We really have to be kind to them

As an American living in Europe I realized America really messed me up thinking I had to work myself to death and feeling guilty to take vacation and call out sick. Europeans work to live whereas Americans live to work. My boss here in Europe had to order me to take time off. How screwed up is that? I'm glad Americans are resigning for their own peace of minds. Sad it took a pandemic to make them realize it.
Guess what? Despite the work work work culture, most workers in American are still struggling to make ends meet and wallowing in debt. Some are even working multiple jobs to get by.

Yeah but US has a much better work culture. I think. Workers in a US company seem to be alot more supportive towards one another therefore creating a better work atmosphere. But still Amazon is not one of those companies but in general you could say that about the US. I only wish it was a bit more fair and the hypercompetition was somewhat controlled then it'd be perfect.

Working in customer service were the most miserable years of my life. Most people are good but the bad apples spoil it every time.
I’m in college now getting my degree so I don’t have to be yelled at and treated like a slave for the rest of my life
I feel like some of these employers don’t even see people as people anymore they just see money that can be made if a employee is there.
I also got fired as a cashier 2 years ago for being in a car accident. Some employers are really messed up. They do not care that we are dieing or have funerals. When the guy started crying in this video I remember feeling like him.

Anyway most things will be lockdown globally on-off and other problems where travel isn't even possible/too many hassles and after a while buying new cars is also not worth it so better to have more free time to recuperate than live as a constant working debt slavr.
I've been working since I was a teenager and it's not at all surprising that this is the end result of years of ungrateful attitudes, the blame games, innocent, hard working people getting fired or quitting while the favorites get to do whatever they want with little to no consequences, discriminatory practices, miserly people, and a society waking up and realizing their worth. I manage my realtor's team and real estate business and even though the pay is good and the employees/employers are good, this is the last time I will be helping somebody start and run their business because I will be starting and running my own soon enough. Can't keep taking the risk knowing that I'm replaceable at any given time.

I experienced this at previous jobs. The best workers are often treated the worst, and the managers little pets, get to take it easy and even get the promotions.
“There is more to life than a big house or THAT career.” I love that because I think we as a society have gotten caught up in image and titles to boost our social recognition and status, that we completely forget that we have family getting old, a world rusting away, and so much going on without you. Time doesn’t freeze for your hustle, and people aren’t going to wait for you to get in the “perfect” situation to show up. Life is more important than a write up.
I do think we Americans are obsessed with work, and it's a good thing that this viewpoint is changing. I lost both of my grandparents and parents this year... It has been life altering! I think my biggest takeaway from my losses is that life is just too short to not be around the people you love and to not live your life in a way that brings you joy.
I think the last two years woke up a lot of people. Why run the rat race if there is nothing at the end? You cant get absolute devoted employees, if your not even paying enough to rent in the market. Why should i give up my life, for an employer who wont even match inflation?

If you are a man in China, it is tough and you have to work unless you are wealthy enough to not work. Most women just want to marry and then sit at home whilst the man has to work and support everyone.
Mexico works more hours than China and Japan. They work like 72 hour work weeks Monday to Saturday and minimum wage over is like $80 bucks a week, so they only make like max$400< usd> a month, but the prices for food and gas is the same as America, so their only option is cheap high fat -fast food which is taking its toll.
But yeah, the fact that we pay US prices for all our goods is really messed up. We're sort of like Ukraine and Russia, we use natural gas and its all imported from the US and the price is the same. We have to pay $120 for electric/gas which is around 33% of our wages , in the US only 05% of your wage goes to electricity and gas(if using).
Food- Around $200 is needed to feed one-two people a month in the US at minimal. You can do $150 a month for two but that's super college type diet eating ramen and unhealthy.
In Mexico the prices are the same as the US. So once again, 40% of your wage goes to food and that's just going on a college type diet, in the US 10% of your wage goes food and it goes a long way.
In America, if your conservative w/ your money, 60% of your bills are all paid for. So you still havve 40% of your income to spend on leisure goods. That's around $2000-5000 USD to save up or spend at your will.
In Mexico nearly 95% of your wage goes to pay bills. So only 5% of your wage is to be spent on emergencies like medical expenses. The problem is that many Americans are coming to mexico for cheap healthcare which is inflating the prices so now the local resdients can't pay for the goods.
Mexico work life balance is like America, Chinas and Japan but on steroids , that's why when they go the US they work a shi* load of hours because they are used to it. Their govt was neo libs... what ended up happening after 70% of jobs dissapeared in the 80s is that many turned to the GIG economy, the problem is that foreign companies like Wal Mart and Uber etc were allowed to compete with the small times.. So even if we turn to gig eocnomies in the US, we will be comnpeting against itnernational corporations and players just to survive off scraps.
The US can quit their jobs, but there will be thousands of migrants from other countries waiting in line to replace them to get their shot at the 'amderican dream' . it's always been that way in America. The good guys don't win in the end , sure change will happen but after they've been fired.

19 years old and have already had 5 jobs. I’ve been employed since I was 15 years old, I’m not gonna lie- I love working, feeling like I have a purpose. However, in my short tenure I have experienced people with absolutely horrible manners, rude customers, and abysmal management. Sometimes I feel caught in this loop where I feel if I don’t work my life is over, but it’s not! I am currently studying mechanical engineering, working on the side when I need to, & to whoever is reading this; pay yourself before you pay anyone else! Save your money, work hard, and take care of yourself over everything.
I have observed, among my friends in the US, the phenomenon also tends to be misunderstood along generational lines. The older generation tends to attribute it to selfishness, not considering how many young workers lived through the mortgage crisis and household layoffs when they were growing up. They know *exactly* what level of commitment to expect from their employers and other institutions.

Something I think about when people tell horror stories from retail/customer facing jobs is how it doesn't have to be like this, it's all cause of the long standing tradition of ''the cusomer is always right'' I work in retail in Norway and here the customer is definetely not always right, and people know that! There seems to be a common understanding of, ''you treat me like a human being and I will do the same'' here, but in the US it's more like ''I will literally treat you like actual garbage and expect to be treated like a saint'' Unbelievable.
I am part of a social media team for a large retail chain that has numerous storefronts around the U.S. and the pandemic has seriously removed what little reservations customers had about showing respect to store employees. More than one occasion there has been customers literally throwing hands with employees just for asking them to wear a mask, or limiting how many people could be in the store at a time. We didn't have a requirement for masks as a company. That was all based on local mandate regulations where the limit in the store was due to no one respecting the 6 ft. request or getting upset because they weren't being helped fast enough. They would resort to shouting, throwing things, one guy threatened to have all his "gun buddies" come hang out in a store to show that they "wouldn't be bullied into Nazi propaganda". We are experiencing a huge staff shortage in a bunch of our stores simply because employees don't see it as worth it to put their lives at risk to earn a living when they are spit on, ridiculed, and assaulted on a semi-regular basis. I'm thankful that I'm lucky enough to work from home, but my heart goes out to those who aren't able to. Hopefully this all mellows out, but I know once it does there will be something else that people get up in arms about.

We recently had a tornado tear through the town of Mayfield, Kentucky. Workers at a candle factory wanted to leave before the tornado hit, but were told they'd be fired if they did so. Some of those people were killed, others badly injured.
The factory was destroyed and now all of the workers who survived the tornado are unemployed. Their reward for risking their lives to make profits for the owner.
2:03 this dude moved me because I had the same experience. I left my job while I was on break. My father was diagnosed with alzheimers and I didn't want him to forget me and not spend time with him. I had enough of missing birthdays, funerals, Christmas, Thanksgivings and never being able of taking a good vacation with my family. All I could accumulate throughout a year was a few hours of PTO(paid time off) that amount to about a week in an entire year. I couldn't handle missing out on sharing with my loved ones. I said "fuck this job" I'm gone. Started my own lawn business and I have all the time in the world.

When I was in my twenties I loved working. Even as an older teen I always had two part time jobs and rode my mountain bike across town to each job. I eventually(mid 20’s) found myself taking over a very small company because the man who started it wanted out. I also found myself on call for about 15 years straight lol. But It really worked out for me because I didn’t particularly like working with others. There was always a disruptive employee and that stuff drove me baths!t. I wasn’t at work to socialize. Creeping up on 50 and I’ve worked for myself this whole time. I’ve never filled out a job app or have applied for a bank loan or borrowed any money. There’s alternatives. 👍

Bad customers and bad bosses need to be put in check, period. Stand up for your self, competent people are hard to come by, use the leverage you have or start your own business. Stand up for your coworkers, services are in high demand right now, there should be no need to tolerate hateful, impatient people.
I can remember my wife worked for a call center and we had a massive fire in town. The manager of this call center would not let people leave so they could go home and take care of their things, as the fire was spreading by the minute, burning down homes.
This same place wouldn't let their workers leave during one of the greatest floods in the history of the state. It took the National Guard showing up and evacuating the business for the employees to finally get out of there and go home, hoping that their place was not underwater.
This particular business is just one of a million places that treat their employees this way, and people are sick and tired of it.
A local man, when i was in Afghanistan, told me something that actually makes the most sense to me. He just worked to live. Americans live to work. He worked to get what he needed. Nothing more nothing less. Americans live to work, and in turn live beyond their means. Mortgage payment. 2 car payments. Internet phone tv satellite radio, the list goes on and on. And you havent even gotten food or paid utilities. Makes perfect sense if you think about it.

An Uber driver told me this too from when he was living in India. If they don’t work one day it’s no problem. Where I was in a situation if I missed a day of work as casual employee in Australia(which many employees are). I’d effectively lose 20% of next weeks income and really feel it.
America being the land of opportunity, most anyone can go after a mortgage, a luxury vehicle, a $5000 dog, or whatever else flips their switch. You can't do that in Afghanistan. If you want it and work for it, you can acquire it. Our standard of living is extremely high here in the USA. Not all of us live above our means but it does happen. Wisdom is where you find it however I don't believe your Afghani local has insite over how we live here.
I quit my job (in July) because i felt underappreciated by my company. I worked hard and stood around through the pandemic (i was a delivery driver) and got nothing. They added more work for no extra pay (i was salaried). So, i got tired of it and left for a job that i like a lot more and pays me hourly so if i have to wait for someone, i get paid for that waiting.

When you're 95-100 years old and you look back over the course of your life time, you're not gonna think "I wish I owned a better phone, I wish I spent more time on the internet or working or sleeping", it's going to be I wish I spent more time with the people I love.

Back in the 90s when my mom was pregnant with me, I almost killed her. I was a horrible pregnancy and eventually a complicated delivery. My father’s job wouldn’t let him off to visit my mom in the hospital and he needed the job because his wife was pregnant. A few years later that same job let him go hone early because one of our dogs died. They valued our pet’s life more than his wife and child. My mother was furious and tells that story often because it’s unbelievable.
Workers are tired of the bs, no employee appreciation, low wages, little to no benefits and too much stress. I don’t blame them at all for quitting.

As a native resident to Texas, it has been my experience that very conservative states tend to treat their employees a lot worse than more progressive states. Conservative states have less rights in the workplace. For example. In Texas, we have “right to work laws“. Sounds pretty cool doesn’t it? Guess what. It’s really not. Right to work laws are very deceptive language. When they say right to work, they don’t mean that you’re getting extra rights as a worker. What they mean by that is that your employer has the right to fire you for any reason at any time. You can file for unemployment. Most likely, you won’t get it. The reason why is because the unemployment more often than not, sides with the employer. Guilty til proven innocent. That’s the kind of rights we get in Texas. We have the right to get fucked over.
People are also fed up with companies letting go of employees who have worked for 25-29 years of their life to save on pensions. Why dedicate your life to a company that doesn't care about people but only about their bottom line...
I have been working in a customer supportive roll for 35 years and can say that it has changed for the worst in the last 15 years. Worst part is companies expect you to take the abuse as if it is part of your job. It has made me very jaded and loath the general public. This gentleman did the right thing. I cant wait to retire and never deal with the general public again!

I did exactly the same during 21. I changed jobs for half the salary and although things are very tight I'm so much happier. You just have to change your lifestyle to your circumstances.
A customer facing job is extremely hard, most of the time very unfulfilling. Employers in the USA look at you as replaceable while complimenting you on how great of a job you do. I'm on the last week of my two weeks notice and I can't wait to start my new life.

@James Godfrey Well, the sad fact is that customer facing roles are very replaceable. The barrier for entry is about as low as it gets. Not to say that these employees shouldn’t be treated with respect, but if literally anyone could do the job, it will be paid accordingly. Want a higher wage? This is soo relatable. Working in a call centre had a really bad effect on my mental health. Every call was a complaint and i was too scared to move career for a longtime. I got do comfortable with the ppl around me that i didn't want to move. Until, they wanted me to work 60 hours a week. Thats when i literally just quit. I'm sooooo glad i did. Alhamdullilah i love my job now

You know I've owned a business and worked in many fields from cheffing, operations manager to being a pilot, and unfortunately there was a hostile takeover of my franchise many years ago when the actual head company went under (Eagle Boys) because I had a prime or what the call a "flagship" store... I ended up taking my equipment and moving out trying to do it on my own, I lost all my money I owed my parents like 10k, (dont worry I went into mining and flying after its ok atm) but my employees were family to me, and the first week i couldnt pay my bills vs the wages, i told them all we had to close and i gave them a bonus on top and copped it on my credit record for the bills.
I feel like this is how employers should be. Because I still speak to, visit and spend time with many of my former employees.
Some have gone into mining like myself and have houses and kids now.
I valued every single person who has ever worked under me.
Not just in the USA, but UK also. There are big staff shortages or at least high turnover of staff. It coincides with a mass spiritual awakening of humanity clashing with deteriorating working conditions. Then you have the poison jab that is also taking many out of the work force.
I get the guy in tears over missing his grandfather's funeral! As a nurse for 27 years and nurses aide before that, I have missed the death of my dearest grandmother, my mother, somewhat my father. many other dear relatives. I missed my son's entire childhood. All of it in the name of not getting "written up" for missing time. My grandmother had the inconvenient timing of dying right after thanksgiving, so I could only turn around and drive back to say goodbye for an hour and drive back before I was fired. At that same time my son, at 10 years old, was living with my mother, because I could not take time off for his needs when he was with me, without being fired, since I was a new nurse. He still thinks I do not love him because of this.
This many years later, the climate in nursing has changed. There is more tolerance for staff and their family issues, but also, I'm just a nurse with a lot of experience these days and there is a huge need for any nurse, let alone an experienced one. If I had that choice again, screw the job. Unfortunately, I cannot get my last minutes with my grandparents and parents back. I cannot get back all the times I was short with people I loved from stress. I cannot convince my son that I truly love him now, after my mother essentially raising him. These days, I have the stupid career, that is still precarious at times when it comes to choosing family or work. I don't really have a family any more, so many are gone. I spent Christmas eve working this year and Christmas day sleeping all day. I realize I forgot to at least call several family members due to just sleeping all day and now I am making amends.... again. Screw the job! Focus on your family. Don't be me. This is a good change for people.
It can be hard to walk away from a job when it’s doing something that you genuinely believe in. You sound like a nurse at heart and have stuck with it through thick and thin, but it’s just like any other job where “needs are a must” except you feel morally obligated to step up because you’re a nurse. My mother was too. Thankfully she was a single parent so managed to get out of that rat race and switched to a part time mental health post, best thing she ever did for herself. Any workplace will consume us if we let it.
Thank you for roughing it out, the world needs more people like you. Most people would’ve walked before now so if you need to refocus or switch to a clock in/out routine, do it. You’ve given them enough….
@Яна Глазкова There are good people in society but perhaps they are often humble and they do not promote themselves - at times like this (pandemic)I remember families in Berlin,Germany - on Valentine's Day I walked down a street a former working class district where money used to be scarce and in front of a brick house were some boxes beautifully decorated with hearts . filled with vegetables and fruit, and paper signs stated " Take what you wish and have a happy Valentine's Day" (Nehmen Sie was sie moechten und einen schoenen Valentins Tag). This was so surprising to see in such a tough neighborhood! I took some vegetables but what I also took was a lovely memory of a kind gesture by unknown strangers ...kindness does exist in many small ways everywhere...Catherine

It is not your imagination or your fault! Your training in particular and the culture (or brainwashing) around your profession plays a huge role in this. Case in point...I was a very young university lecturer in my first job (I teach business). We had a massive snow storm in the area. I knew the only way to our location was highway traveling for our students. As I watched the snow pile up in the morning, I decided it was too dangerous and began contacting my small group of students notifying them of the cancellation. Within the hour, the governor declared a state of emergency and no one was allowed to travel on state roads. As a result, the college cancelled all classes. I was absolutely astonished when other lecturers got on our chat board complaining about cancelling. Of course, it was the "health" educators with comments like - "How dare they cancel class!" "How are we supposed to discipline our students for the work environment?" "Do they think they can do this in the 'real world'"? I was floored by the insensitive (and quite frankly dangerous and life threatening comments from people that were supposed to first do no harm and protect the safety of human life! So you see...it starts in your profession as a total brainwash even before you get into practice. Nothing is worth your safety and physical/mental health. I wish you all the best in healing (as you have probably done for so many others in your lifetime).
My manager didn’t let me take holiday and when she did she made me feel super guilty, even if it were just one day. Glad to have found a new job!

I've worked for my employer for nearly three (3) decades and I've been in direct customer service the entire time. Most people I deal with are pretty easy going, but this also depends on the industry you're in. I'm lucky I have a support role for technology instead of supporting customers who are having billing issues or insurance problems. Those jobs are the most challenging because people are usually already in a really bad mood. When I do get a nasty person I have made comments like..."My role is to assist you, but at the same time I deserve to be treated with respect and if you cannot do that then I cannot assist you." That usually does the trick and they realize how badly they are behaving. But, it's rare. In nearly thirty years it's only happened a few times. Thank goodness, or I would not be working there. Life is too short to be treated that way.
I use to work in retail. My last job was customer service with a hardware store chain in Australia. You couldn't do anything right. If you tried to to right by the customer, you'd get in trouble from management. If you tried to do right by the company, the customer would go off at you. Big hours and continually being understaffed and told off with zero support from management.
I woke up one morning and just decided, this is it, i'm quitting today. Went into the office and handed in my notice. I didn't have a job to go to at the time, but i didn't care. The place was destroying my health, physical and mental. It's been about 6 years since i left that place, i'm still in contact with my former team and from i hear it's gotten worse and worse since i left. I now work as a carer and i haven't looked back.
Good on these guys making a positive change.
Many more refugees from middle east will fill up the vacancy at cheap prices.

That's exactly how It Is at my old job. My boss hires people that are not flexible and he ended up put everything on my shoulder cause I'm the only one that's flexible In any day night and graveyard. The worse part of It there late all the time that you ended staying staying for 30 min sometimes an hour or two. It's a shame I work there for 6 years. But when It's time to go It's time to go.

I’ve lived and worked in both US and UK for over 10 years each. employers and employees in both places are identical. The same mass resignation is occurring in the UK and people are living off the government to learn a new language, travel, spend more time with their friends and/or sit in their parents basement playing video games. Its not great in either country and the economy needs people working, even if conditions aren’t amazing for entry-level jobs.
I'm surprised there wasn't anything regarding job security in this piece. For a lot of people, a reliable paycheck is what makes them stay in a job they hate. When the pandemic hit, entire industries learned the hard way, that they're disposable and loyalty to a company means nothing. So, in droves, people realized that if there's no security, they would rather be doing something they love or just something they hate a little bit less, because there's no incentive to remain loyal or even remain in their field.
I have heard reports in some places where lock downs have left business owners and their employees completely in the dark about when they will be allowed to conduct business. Where I live, gyms have opened and closed 4 times in the last year. Nobody can be expected to organize their schedules and budget around going back to work for a week only to shut down again for a month. School closures and virtual learning has pushed parents to either work from home, or quit to care for their kids during the day.
I'm very glad to see the working class with some negotiating power. It's nice when companies not harshly impacted by the pandemic, are giving incentives to employees to help prevent them from looking for greener pastures.
Coming home from a grueling day at work each and every day, sun up to sun down and not wanting to do anything you used to like doing not wanting to call people you love because you’re too damn exhausted defeats the purpose of working to live. Screw that luxury apartment, screw that fancy car upgrade, screw that spa subscription none of it matters. Things will always be there for you, that job will always be there for you, but your family is temporary and can never be replaced. Cherish your family while you still have one.

Summed up my past 5 years of life in my 20's. This is happiest stage I've ever been in my life. I want a mustang some day, but I don't want to sell my soul for a monthly payment. A simple lifestyle is soo much more rewarding.

Yes! I realized I pay good 💰 for a home I’m never at, except to sleep and then I wake up and do it all over ago, so what’s the point? My 2 days off I spend sleeping because I’m too tired to do anything else. It’s not worth it.
I resigned from a hospital admin position where I was severely taken for granted and under paid. It finally got to the point where it’s effect was so detrimental on my physical and mental health that I had to leave. I ended up joining the National Guard and becoming a deputy Sheriff and it’s been a wonderful ride so far. Definitely a 180 from what I had been doing

I will say it's a tough option if you're looking for more time with your family. It was 4 months at fort sill followed by a year in Iraq for me. Being active duty I had about another 5 months total of field exercises I was away for.
My story is similar to yours. I’m glad to hear you are doing good. I’m so happy I quit my former job I’m not stressed out anymore and love my new career.
If something is costing you your peace it's not worth it. You made the best decision.

I think it's about time that we started to reevaluate and reassess our lives; whether or not working to make a living for a life you're not really "living" is even worth it. Far too often I've seen employers and business owners engage in shady business practices and exploit their employees. One of them even tried to use an intimidation tactic on me, about how "Other people would want my job", I said "Let them!" It needs to stop! It's 2022 and it's about time that the model gets turned on its head. We have to replace these outmoded values and beliefs that are relics of a bygone era. And I'm just glad that with the pandemic, people are realizing their self worth. I use to have the attitude of not wanting to risk my job, now, I couldn't care less. There are always better opportunities out.
I feel this completely. Not being able to go to my ex boyfriends and close friends funeral due to a job was one of the litany of many things that made me join in on the big quit. Doing my own thing now and it’s good.

It’s good that the truth is coming out. Careers are satisfying for very few people. Most people have jobs in uncaring, annoying places. Earlier I used to feel bad saying I am a stay at home mom but now I say it with a sense of relief and feel happy that I don’t have to put up with shitty workplaces and bosses.
You are missing out on nothing. Most of these jobs are awful and soul destroying!
