My ice cream bean flowered and produced fruit for me after 3 years in the ground it was only about 1 ft tall when I planted it. It started flowering about 3 months ago and its still flowering and growing fruit now. I really like the tree, very easy to care for and very fast growing. Live in Vista California! Very nice Farm, keep up the good work!
Ice cream bean is a brittle tree so I'm planting mine right next to a grouping of tall sabal palms. The groupings of sabals surrounding my garden saved it from destruction during the last hurricane. I have such a new appreciation for them now. They blocked an incredible amount of wind because of the fact they were planted together in groups and left untrimmed.
Hello! Your farm is beautiful! Everything looks very healthy and thriving! You take care and stay safe? I live in Burlingame California (10-15 minutes south of San Francisco, Northern California) zone 10a and my “ice cream bean” is flowering right now! I noticed the “buds” first time a week ago and today, I just saw the buds have turned into beautiful flowers! I’m very excited because I have been growing this ice cream bean tree for about 4-5 years, I a pot, a 15 gallon pot! I live in a nursing home (physically impaired, in wheelchair) but I love nature! There is a small patio where I have gotten permission to do my “gardening” and I feel very good to have had a “chance” to continue with my passion for nature! Even after the brain stroke! I hopping this flowers will become fruits! 👨🏻🧑🏻🦼🕊🙏🏼💜👍🏼
: during those tree weeks plus that I was away nobody water my plants! I found many of them dead and many others badly stressed! My ice cream bean was among the distressed ones but with my TLC my plants are back on track again!,
Wow yours look great. I've been trying to find pruning information on these because mine is almost 2 years old, 8 feet tall and growing straight up. There's no major limbs coming off, just the small leaf groups every few inches. At this rate it will be a 60 foot flag pole lol
We have a 1/2 acre food forest in Central Florida in 9a and I really want to plant ice cream bean as a canopy tree but we have a few days of frost per year that burn mangos and papayas. The fact that it's a nitrogen fixer than can be chop and drop makes it attractive if it ends up failing as a fruiting tree in our zone.
That tapioca root tree I saw is a wonderful soil enrichment it makes it own nutrients and when the old roots rot in the ground they attract great bacteria that benefit the soil great to have that one
What a gorgeous space! I grew two ice cream beans from seed...one is taller than 6 feet and the other is a little shorty. I put the taller one in ground already and it is so adorable. I can't wait till it really starts growing...she is still a single "trunk" and just has leaves all up and down. I look forward to her branching out and getting a little girthier! LOL!!
Good call with the yucca. I'm sure they'll be really easy to pull out from wood chips. I'm doing the same with mine. I think the ice cream beans flower when they are of a specific size instead of age. Mine are 5 years old and they're not as tall as yours, and I have not gotten any flowers yet.
4:40 omg! Finally9thank you) I’ve got confirmation I’ve been trying to find this info regarding my seedling which is 10+ years old hasn’t ever flowered, had 2 major chops right to the ground!
Never heard about the ice cream bean before, but then we’re in zone 8a. However, we still do try a few tropicals on our patio. Currently I’m growing a coffee tree seedling. It had a bit of a setback this winter when the cat 🐈 munched it.
What are your recommendations for Ice cream bean tree spacing? Looks like you have some of your cocoanut tree really close. I would think they would eventually compete even though the ice cream bean does fix nitrogen.
Beautiful food forest. I’m curious what affect you’ve noticed from the eucalyptus being alelopathic. In my dryer climate we are advised to not plant near these.
Where are you located I’m in Hawaii my icecream bean is like 4 feet tall and two years old and growing well I found that worm castings work best for fertilizer
What's Ripening? Thanks for your response! Yes I’ve got mine mulched as well, it maybe the species also I guess the chop maybe paid a toll on it as it got chopped right to the ground but it’s now about 6m tall by 4m, looking lush and healthy even though it’s the end of winter here.
@@WhatsRipening I have two Inga Edulis, they're about 2-3 years old, and they're pretty good. I have them in a sheltered place of my house by the sea, facing south.
Thanks, they are not a long term element in the system, just for establishment phase. I recommend checking out Syntropic Agriculture, they use it a lot in brazil and the results are amazing.
Check out Green Garden Guy. He's in Hawaii but, ships fast. I have tasted the fruit from him and are growing seedlings. www.fremontica.net/greengardening/green_sales.php
If you want to swing by Amelia Earhart Park, I have a huge tree loaded with fruit if you want some seeds. I'm still trying to come up with a decent use for the fruit. Not overly impressed with the flavor. but the tree is quite beautiful and generates a nice deep shade. (awesome in those barren landscape areas)
Thanks, some areas are 3 years old but the inga are 2. I watered these particular beds in the dry season for the first two seasons and have stopped completely now. I use deep mulch though. Other areas get no water, but deep mulch.
Nice looking eucalyptus. Almost time to chop their heads off =) you’ll be surprised at how much they produce once they are adults. The ingas look great as well. It’s really an amazing species, and highly productive as well. Cheers!

I am in zone 10a also in san diego, how many feet tall is your 3 year old tree?

Good for you! Gardening really enhances one's life.
What a beautiful farm. Very nice, sir.

How do you keep the farm so neat clean

I’d say Inga bean is much more hardy than coffee on another scale.

Love your clean and green setup!
awesome looking!!!
How long tell they first flower in a container?
What are your recommendations for Ice cream bean tree spacing? Looks like you have some of your cocoanut tree really close. I would think they would eventually compete even though the ice cream bean does fix nitrogen.
I’ve read a mature tree will tolerate to 25F when established
Beautiful food forest. I’m curious what affect you’ve noticed from the eucalyptus being alelopathic. In my dryer climate we are advised to not plant near these.
The management is the key.
Gorgeous farm! What kind of grass is in your aisle?
Where are you located I’m in Hawaii my icecream bean is like 4 feet tall and two years old and growing well I found that worm castings work best for fertilizer
I'm in southwest Florida
What type of soil did u plant yours in mine is growing really slow
Is that from seed?
So did you get fruit ?
What climate can you grow the inga on the ground?
Zone 9b and above
Eucalypt leaves contain high oil content which can kill other plants in high concentrations. I wouldn’t use the leaves for chop and drop purposes.
They are very beneficial in my context
Awesome looking trees! Did you grow them from seed or buy them as small trees? Look forward to seeing if they set fruit!
Grown from seed, they were about a foot tall when planted out.
Ice cream bean is actually zoned all the way to 9b I am zone pushing this tree in zone 7b in Va
How did that work?
Do you sell any seeds,
Not yet. I have 200 seedlings started right now though
@@WhatsRipening I’d buy some seedlings as well. Maybe 4-6 of em
Hey what cover are you using under the ice cream beans please?
Geoff Lawton calls it "Singapore daisy". We call it "wedelia" around here.
What's Ripening? ok cheers I'll look into it. it looks abit invasive?
@@SHANONisRegenerate you could say that
wow my ice cream bean is 10+ years old but no flowers yet, any tips on feeding to activate flowering?
Mine are just mulched with wood chips. Maybe you have a different species or soil conditions
Is it also good in USDA 9B areas?
Maybe, but I'm not sure
@@WhatsRipening I have two Inga Edulis, they're about 2-3 years old, and they're pretty good. I have them in a sheltered place of my house by the sea, facing south.
I’m not sure if eucalyptus was a good idea to plant, the roots generate juglone, an allelopathic chemical that inhibits growth of other trees.
Thanks, they are not a long term element in the system, just for establishment phase. I recommend checking out Syntropic Agriculture, they use it a lot in brazil and the results are amazing.
This particular Eucalyptus torelliana doesn't have a history of significant juglone or allelopathy.
Can I get a cutting from you of the Ice cream bean ? S Florida here.
I think they grow from seed only. I will have plants available soon.

What do you do for watering?

Thanks. I was wondering when to chop the top. I can't reach much higher to prune unless I bring my tractor or another ladder.
