Nate Ruess is a genius. His lyrics in all of his songs aren't cliche and extremely creative and emotional, especially the ones in Be Calm, my personal favorite.
Nate explained in an interview that in a way it's both. He's trying to spell "because," but he ends up putting an extra C in and spelling his ex's name, and then, "I never finish phrases I misspell," is meant to explain that connection. He's a genius.
The Format hands down. See that's a metaphor, no wait a similie.... It's actually an idiom and double entendra that led to a pun that explains why The Format is like butter to the ears... Which is an actual similie. Which bring me to my point... Nate Reuss has an angelic voice... a metaphor.... But The Format's melancholy just wieghed a ton on the heart.... That last one was a stretch but Hyperbole all the same.... See what I just did? This reply could keep going in circles... OK, Ok, I'll stop now.
Man I can't believe I forgot about these guys! This song got me through some rough times. One of the few sad songs that gives you a boost at the end and reminds you to keep going
Was a janitor one summer in college...2006....a building in north Scottsdale. Jammed to this album while I cleaned dip out of urinals and turtle vac’d hole punched paper. AZ baby!!!....used their songs on my Myspace page 😂
YES! I got a zune in fifth grade, and this was one of 3 videos that came with it, but that thing broke down before I could even put music on it... this song has been stuck in my head for 8 years and I finally found it ;w;
God. Since I started listening to The Format and Fun., I have only listened to The Format and fun. That was right before the new year. I gotta say though, nothing beats this album. It is perfection
When I was I think 4 this was my favorite song ever. I loved Oobi, the show that's just hands with googly eyes, and thought this was from it or something. So I listened to it all the time. I'm about 16 now and i still love this song! But I think I better understand what it was about now then I did 10+ years ago
I bought this cd cause it looked intresting having dogs all over it & case made out of cardboard insted of glass! Had it 17 years now & still e4njoy it!
their new cd is called dog problems, and it is alright. but my personal favorite is their cd before that called "interventions and lullabies" it is absolutely amazing. the song "the first single" is unbelievable and has become one of my favorite songs of all time. i really reccomend it. i loveeeee the format.
I've always thought that The Format had a more soulful and dynamic sound to it. Just the transitions in this song are amazing and well put together that makes the whole song that much more enjoyable to listen to.
I love this video! The format is easily one of the best bands ever! He also is talking about the first single when he says "I said I hate who I've become I lied I hated who I was" Genius!
Something I noticed: "If you can try to fix what I've undone, because I hate what I've become" The First Single, 2003 "When I say I hate what I've become, I lied, I hated who I was" This song, 2006 Sorry if this was an obvious reference, I just wanted to point it out
Wait.. WHAT? I hear it now but this is seriously Fun.? That is amazing. Nate Reuss is more fantastic than I had originally believed. I was just checking out this song since it had been forever only to find this sweet nugget of information. Absolutely amazing song and amazing band.
i think that... i've never loved a song as much as this one. it just picks you up and it's like, WAHOOOOOOOO! i dunno how. the incredible singer makes me forget ALL my problems and i just... i love it! this is music at its finest.
I love this video. It's so funny. The hands have hands to play the piano, the facebook page has a hand with a swooping haircut, Nate's hand has a hat, and the band's just awesome.
I LOVE THIS BAND!!!! finally some music with meaningful lyrics and the voice of the lead singer AMAZING!!!! i could listen 2 them forever! GO THE FORMAT!
To be honest, I have to thank Panic! At the Disco for this. When their song, C'mon, came out, I really liked Nate's voice, and then I started listening to more and more of fun. Wanting more, I looked him up and now here I am on what is currently one of my favorite songs only finding out about it 7 years after it came out.
Basically the story of my life. I had known about fun. when they came out with "We Are Young", "Some Nights", and "Carry On", and I thought they were really good. I never really paid much attention to how good they were, though, until I was wandering around TH-cam and came across "Walking the Dog", at which point I then listened to all of fun.'s songs. I was Googling Nate Ruess, and found he was in a band called The Format before fun. and too fell in love with this band. Nate is pure genius.
The economy of social media is insane how this has less views than a jre clip after 16 years makes me sad. I'm at a loss you were my tangerine. My pussy cat. My trampoline.
i think this is one of their best songs, and they do too to release it as a video. if you only think a band has one good song why watch the video? and post a comment? i think this is a very talented band.
I broke up with my exgirlfriend in college. I somehow came across this song (not really how), but it really helped me move on. The emotions you feel from this song are hard to explain. The first time I heard the bridge I broke into tears because of the emotions I was feeling.
I listened to the format cause my sis was obsessed with them and even got to see them but I now regret not getting into them but I'm also a Supporter of Fun now. Love the band so much
Have you listened to Aim and Ignite? There's so much win in that album. Also, their Christmas (yet not Christmasy-sounding) song, Believe in Me. It makes me tear up (but only when I listen to the lyrics).
I loved the Format. And then they broke up. All of a sudden relient k goes on tour with a band called fun. I missed the show but loved the band. Then about 2 years later who do I hear on the radio. People don't need to be hatin that they got famous. I've been following their music for quite awhile. Be happy Nate's dream came true. He's still amazing. Band's do this all the time. Just enjoy the music guys
haha, i never realized people'd probably be enthusiasts of one over the other... i never got the chance to see The Format, but i saw fun. at Bonnaroo last year... simply put, these guys are fantastic musicians, and my force of opinion says, YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC IS PERFECT! all of ours are.
i agree. i've loved the format for a looong time. but it's every singer's dream to make it big. so i'm proud of them (fun) and i'm proud to know i was there in the crowd in the beginning :)
hahahaha this video is soooo adorable. i love the spitfulness in the song, sooooo good. great band. and how they actually made a mysoace page for the boy with the swooping hair cut is just hilarious!
I used to be a huge fan of the format, dunno why I stopped listening to them for a few years. I was really happy when I saw Nate in fun. though, it's great he finally got this successful ^^ but i still prefer the format, but it may just be because all of their songs bring back memories...
That's because in that part it says, "If you ever start to wonder about the pain in my throat..." Get it? The hand is the head, so the wrist is the throat? This video is brilliant. :)
Don't you dare Speak for someone you don't know They'll feel it in the back of their throat We know i can't constuct a poem 'Cause words like girls get bored and run C'est la vie I say "I've got many better things" I've got nothing You should see me I smoke myself to sleep And blame postmodern things I can't relate Like summer camp and coastal states Like alcohol and coffee beans Dance floors and magazines I think It's safe to say I've only got myself to blame But boys in swooping haircuts Are bringing me down Taking pictures of themselves Oh no And so I walk to web in search of love But always seem to end up stuck I'm finding flaws in everyone I've reached the point where all I want Is to sleep around In hopes that I will catch back up We are parallel lines We're running in circles We're never meant to cross I'm at a loss You were my tangerine My pussycat My trampoline Now all's I get are wincing cheeks And Dog problems I signed a lease Thinking my heart belonged At 93rd and Park Instead I broke a girls heart And flew back to Phoenix To finish the year as it started Can you hear me? wow im like this, i see what fun. was supost to be based off of so much. and im guna say that The Format is the reason Fun. works its the lessons from this that helped set him up for greatness.
The musicians I know-don't think its "just music" but a part of their heart. So I was wondering, if you are making music & someone "important" hears it & the music ends up with a huge fan base (you had nothing to do with) how is it possible to not be your definition of a sell out? Wont all the (unrequested) fans be causing chaos in clubs? Paparazzi following you, people wanting your attention, having to hire people to keep you safe? How do you STOP something like that? Other than stop playing?
If you like this one you need to hear The Compromise...it's awesome too!! And btw it is very sad they broke up. Mark Buzard is an awesome musician and also happens to be my brother~in~law. God bless ya!!
at 3:48 he said "when i said i hate what i've become i lied i hated who i was" refers to an earlier song "First Single" where he stated that he hated what he became.
From Stockholm, Sweden: ~appause~applause~applause~ I agree with WileyCoyote69, who said: "Sesame Street meets Queen? Come on. That's freaking GENIUS. Completely." This is very creative and well performed. The "music-video-story" is very elegant put together. It's really alternately. This is both for adults and kids. Just wonderful.
Nate Ruess is a genius. His lyrics in all of his songs aren't cliche and extremely creative and emotional, especially the ones in Be Calm, my personal favorite.
i am blown away that be calm is from the same guy
Nate explained in an interview that in a way it's both. He's trying to spell "because," but he ends up putting an extra C in and spelling his ex's name, and then, "I never finish phrases I misspell," is meant to explain that connection. He's a genius.
Still loving this song 15 years later!! I really hope they’re able to do their reunion tour soon.
Jesus, Dog Problems came out 15 years ago?? Where did the time go?
Not sure if I like FUN. or THE FORMAT better. Aim and Ignite and Dog Problems were both fantastic albums.
i love both
Aim and Ignite and Dog Problems!

This is such a great song that tells a story. Very unique.
This is probably the best music video I've ever watched.
Don't you dare
Speak for someone you don't know
They'll feel it in the back of their throat
We know i can't constuct a poem
'Cause words like girls get bored and run
C'est la vie
I say "I've got many better things"
I've got nothing
You should see me
I smoke myself to sleep
And blame postmodern things I can't relate
Like summer camp and coastal states
Like alcohol and coffee beans
Dance floors and magazines
I think It's safe to say I've only got
myself to blame
But boys in swooping haircuts
Are bringing me down
Taking pictures of themselves
Oh no
And so I walk to web in search of love
But always seem to end up stuck
I'm finding flaws in everyone
I've reached the point where all I want
Is to sleep around
In hopes that I will catch back up
We are parallel lines
We're running in circles
We're never meant to cross
I'm at a loss
You were my tangerine
My pussycat
My trampoline
Now all's I get are wincing cheeks
And Dog problems
I signed a lease
Thinking my heart belonged
At 93rd and Park
Instead I broke a girls heart
And flew back to Phoenix
To finish the year as it started
Can you hear me?
Are you listening?
This is the sound of my heart breaking
And I hope it's entertaining
'Cause for me
It's a bitch
Was it worth it?
When you slept with him?
Did you get it all out of your system?
I am a man
Holding it all
I couldn't breathe
Coming across
I didn't know
I couldn't get up
B is for believing
You'd always be here for me
E is for everything
Even when we'd see it through
C, C is for seeing through you,
You are a fake
Which brings me to:
A
Because, because you always run away
I never finish phrases I misspell
An open arm's a prison cell
When I said "I hate what I've become"
I lied, I hated who I was
So when you start to wonder
About the pain in my throat
The don't you ever, no never ever
Speak for someone
You
Don't
Know
