I come back and watch this periodically and typically end up with slightly moistened eyes. Miss Stanwyck is pure class, clearly grateful for the award she has won yet humbly takes a moment to draw attention to the crew and their contribution which heightened her performance. Then her utterly unselfish shout out to Ann Margaret will forever shine as one of the kindest and most generous compliments ever offered in the history of the Academy.

Seriously. It brought a little tear to my eye to think of what that moment must have been like for both wagner and stanwyck and what's odd is she won for playing a character in love with a younger man. Her performance in the Thornbirds, to me, stands out as one of the greatest performances of all time in any medium. Hands down.

      Which scene ?
The last rant to "Ralph " before the old girl's death ,
      Or : the no- strides-ithe rainstorm scene ? !
(L.o.l., Barbara apparently forgot a line, and said " It's been a long time since I stood next to a naked man...!")
What priest would disrobe on a porch?!
Surely they would go indoors ....?
Still, that wouldn't fit the story, would it ?!
      Apparently the author Colleen McCullough
thought the adaptation of her book less than satisfactory...
(Am listening on " audiobook", but haven't got very far yet...)
Ah well...the public mostly probably hadn't read it at the time,
and film makers have to do what they think will sell...
It came upon Freeview ( t.v., u.k.)not so long ago, and was more effective,
I thought, at one episode per day...

She is the only actress to honor the crew. Not just here and not just once, but every time she was given the floor after receiving an award or honor. There are many videos like this one where we watch an elderly Stanwick, with her unmistakable husky voice coming from her little tiny body, saying, “I want to thank the crew.” She always highlights the fact that without the crew her work wouldn't be possible. She honestly saw herself as a worker in a crew, not as a star among workers and co-workers, but as part of a team. I think she speaks like a true winner.

Initially, as we now are aware from Robert Wagner's autobiography, he and Ms. Stanwyck were romantically involved during the early 50s; he didn't look much different here than he did during that time period. Stanwyck was the highlight of The Thorn Birds- she gave a performance of depth and extraordinary emotion and deserved the Emmy; she received an honorary Oscar before her death, but did not receive a competitive Oscar. She also showed great class by paying tribute to the performance of Ann Margaret in Who Will Love My Children, her real competition in that category.

She also exercised the same class when Ingrid Bergman won the Oscar for "Gaslight" when Stanwyck was nominated for "Double Indemnity" and was the favorite to win. Barbara Stanwyck told the press that her favorite actress, Ingrid Bergman, had won the Oscar, so she was very pleased with the outcome.

+Robert Rodriguez, Thank You Sir , for that comment. Stanwyck said that because she was always so gracious of others. However, I'm sure her heart was broken over not winning that year. Actually Stanwyck should really have been a 3-time Oscar winner for, "Stella Dallas", "Double Indemnity" & "Sorry Wrong Number"! (But side-note, I would have given her the Oscar for "The Lady Eve" for sure, not to even mention "The Furies"!)...and we won't even talk about Best Supporting Actress for "Executive Suite"... oh now to think about it, what about Best Actress for "Clash by Night". I best stop here.

I wondered why Robert Wagner spent so long hugging Ms. Stanwyck until I saw another video where he confesses to an affair with the legend early in his career. They loved each other once!

Barbara Stanwyck gave her compliment to Ann-Margret in just the right way - she didn't say, "I didn't deserve this award," because that would have been making it about herself, and also potentially slighting the people who worked on her film. Stanwyck was a master class in grace and humility in all of her public appearances...something that many celebrities since then don't seem to care about.
(and yes, Ann-Margret gave a superb performance in Who Will Love My Children?)

Yes, when I saw that long embrace between them when she arrived onstage it triggered my memory and what I'd read about the two of them having a very close relationship back in the 50's, I'd forgotten all about that until I saw this video...

    It's called humility and class
Why can't more actors learn this? the only others I can think of recently were Michael Caine and his second Oscar and Ving Rhames and his Golden Globe that he gave to fellow nominee Jack lemmon

Stanwyck came from a very humble background. Her childhood was practically Dickensian. Her mother died tragically when she was 4, and her father disappeared not long after. She then spent her childhood in a succession of foster homes, where she was abused. By age 14, she was on her own. Later, after she was a big star in the '30s, she gave an interview where she seemed proud of her dire upbringing, as if it made her a stronger person: "I knew that after fourteen I'd have to earn my own living, but I was willing to do that ... I've always been a little sorry for pampered people, and of course, they're 'very' sorry for me." \
Anyway, you have to admire someone like that, who never forgot her roots and was always appreciative of the 'little people.' Notice how he gave "a very special thanks to a wonderful crew." Stanwyck was very popular with film/TV crews. She never acted like she was better than anybody, even when she was at one point in the '40s the richest woman in America.
