The Australian government is a fox in the hen house. Instead of investing to innovate to create jobs, why not bring in students from overseas so we can tax them too. The house market is outrageous, how are Aussies supposed to grow the population when you need 2.5 kids per family to grow the nation. Where is all this tax money going, or is it lazy/ mismanagement to to keep Australians in a hole that we will never come out from.
Singapore's government started to build houses and sold them to their people for an affordable price. Why ain't we doing that?

I don't think prohibition works, and trying to achieve it by increasing the tax far enough can be counter productive. We've managed to reduce smoking dramatically without making it impossible or illegal to get. But if we're going to imagine how much more money people would have to spend in their communities, how about also imagining how much more money people would have to spend on their families and kids if they didn't smoke, and didn't spend so much on alcohol. And it still costs us all far more in health care funding than what the tax on cigarettes generates. Cigarette tax has never paid for the cost of treating cigarette related illness, and the other costs that imposes on society.

Back in the Early 80s, a Carton of 24 stubbies was $20.00, now they are $50.00.
      A Carton of Winfield 25s was about $20.00. That's 10 packs of 25.
Now the smokes cost over $500.00.
Why don't you drink at home for a bit over $2.00 a beer?

They are going to have to wipe it out entirely if they want the customers back, be stuffed if I'm paying extortion payments. They dug themselves hole so deep I doubt they can climb back out.

    Absolutely..
Do the sums to see why ..
Imagine your a single mum on a unemployment pension trying to raise children...your doing your shopping & your 50 cigarettes a day habit runs at a cost of over $100 Bucks a day because that's what a pack of 50 cost ....
So here's our single mum that can't give up the habit paying $700 a week to feed her habit ....
HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK THAT SINGLE MUM NOW HAS FROM HER GOVERNMENT PENSION TO BUY FOOD TO FEED THE KIDS & HERSELF AS WELL AS PAY RENT & UTILITIES BILL'S .....
    ANYONE ANYONE ANYONE...
YES THE THE ANSWER IS $0
BECAUSE SHE DOES NOT EVEN RECEIVE THAT MUCH IN GOVERNMENT PAYMENTS ...
THE GOVERNMENT HAS CREATED A BLACK MAKET OPPORTUNITY FOR THE UNDERWORLD TO EXPLOIT & THEY THEY ARE BIG TIME.. .
    Next question?
if everyone ever did quit smoking & stop drinking alcohol in Australia how much money would the government have to run the country?
    ANYONE ANYONE ANYONE
YES THATS RIGHT $0 THE COUNTRY WOULD BE BROKE WITHIN TWO WEEKS

when your a fortnightly 50g pouch of cheapest tobacco costs $150 that cost 30$ 20yrs ago.... no wonder why people are going to blackmarket tobacco... and the main consumers are the lower classes of society and the main victim of the tax...

I've spent the last ten years in Malaysia and paid RM19 for a pouch and RM15 for a pack of smokes. That's like AU$5... Now you're paying $50 a pack, that's basically RM150... There is no justification for this, it is extortion. People will not stop smoking they will just find alternatives or be forced to pay more. The people need to stand up and fight back, regardless if you're a smoker or not, this is absolutely ridiculous prices.

The black market isn't everywhere. Sure some people will be able to source cheap illegal cigarettes, mainly in cities, but for the majority of the population they will never encounter a black market source. So the majority of smokers will continue having to pay the taxes
