The tax on tobacco is supposed to be for healthcare yet in areas like rural nsw healthcare doesnt exist. The question is where does all the money go? Fines, rego and fuel tax is also meant to pay for roads, we have the worst roads of any 1st world country. The government has some explainig to do.
I don't think prohibition works, and trying to achieve it by increasing the tax far enough can be counter productive. We've managed to reduce smoking dramatically without making it impossible or illegal to get. But if we're going to imagine how much more money people would have to spend in their communities, how about also imagining how much more money people would have to spend on their families and kids if they didn't smoke, and didn't spend so much on alcohol. And it still costs us all far more in health care funding than what the tax on cigarettes generates. Cigarette tax has never paid for the cost of treating cigarette related illness, and the other costs that imposes on society.
You don't get to argue that smoking costs the country billions in healthcare and that smokers are taking up beds in our hospitals and then complain that the 25 billion dollars revenue hole caused by overpricing tobacco to unsustainable levels won't be available for roads, rail and infrastructure. We'll just start selling dacka out of it, should be able to make a mint by the time the opperkays shut it down.
My local Bikie smoke shop has been in business for over two years now lol
Nope. It definitely worked bringing down the smoking rate
@MD77248 the price changes barely made a dent. What made all of it work was to outlaw smoking around other people and give them only designated areas.
That is the idea.
The tax on tobacco is supposed to be for healthcare yet in areas like rural nsw healthcare doesnt exist. The question is where does all the money go? Fines, rego and fuel tax is also meant to pay for roads, we have the worst roads of any 1st world country. The government has some explainig to do.
Just think how much money people would have to spend in thier communities...If they didnt have to hand it over to the greedy governments
It's not rocket science.

Bring on the black market 👍😀
Marijuana is far far far cheaper what a joke
And you can buy it in Aus on prescription
It grows for free. An industry awaits...........
@mista2621 Yes, you can buy it from doctors at higher than black market prices. The government still left the door open for the black market as the black market marihuana is just slightly cheaper. Empowering criminals. If they legalised and decriminalised, all could buy some seeds at a marihuana shop and GROW YOUR OWN FOR FREE. FREE
@@lucasroe2878 damn where do you think tobacco comes from 😂
@squidwardwithoutaclue I know exactly where it comes from. I am a reformed smoker. It can be grown for free, too. I am just pointing out the fact that you do not need a medical certificate to drink alcohol or cigarettes and that if you consume these as a responsible adult all is fine. Yet a person has to pay for a free pass on marihuana in Australia and pay black market prices.
Discrimination has no place in Australia, unless its towards smokers
And white people!
And blue collar drinkers who enjoy a beer. Rich sassy wine drinkers are also exempt from tax rises.
You want to see real discrimination... try being a legal firearms owner in WA.
Haha they finally realised that smokers were paying for the whole healthcare system and now they're missing out on money they want it back
Only a small percent went to heaith, it was a con.
ive been smoking since i was 13 in the 80s ill never give up

I used to pay 60 a pack, now it's 20....F the government and their taxes....they are bullying the smokers who already have enough on their plates

They must be cheaper in the city.. my smoke shop was raided on Thursday but the guy said he should have more in this week. he said they were raided 8 months ago and never even received a fine*
I turned to black women but found white ones screw better.
@@MrBibi86 He must have had them on display. Cops can't get a search warrant for tobacco because it is a legal drug. They must either see it or suspect they have something illegal to raid them. That's how they get away with it so easily.
The police get their smokes there too, so they send a heads up to the shop so theres minimal stock. Same as bootleggers.
@@MrBibi86 they can't get fined, tobacco is a legal substance no matter how it comes. Displaying bootleg tobacco is another story. Cheers.
If only this black market was predicted years ago. Oh, that's right, it was, repeatedly.

Public health crisis… pfft says who? the government. Greedy politicians
It went from $7 to over $50 a pack, wages however, have not increased 😂
It isn't that people are now giving criminals money. It is that people are giving a different group of criminals money because they offer a better deal.
Ditch the tobacco excise!
Profiting off peoples addiction
If government cared about health our food standards would be much higher, our medical policies wouldn't be harming us with things being forced on us as safe & effective, our skies & crops wouldn't be getting sprayed with god knows what, our drinking water wouldn't be getting flouride & chlorine put in it, & we would trust labels & government policies with health policies.
if the gov actually cared the first thing they'd ban is seed oils
What they dont tell you is the impact vaping has had on the decline of tobacco sales in recent years
That's right, tobacco industry wanted it shut down,I'd rather vape than back to smoking again because I can't get nicotine anymore

Yea wow, its like some people ACTUALLY think the government wants to HELP them 🤣😑
12 billion last year in tobacco taxes was the magic number not mentioned. Government is under the delusion that we all want to live forever and pay tax.
My Grandma is 65 smoked since she was 12 has never had a health problem related to smoking the only reason for her to go to hospital was to have her kids... Other that that she's a healthy ole gal
You have no non smoking clone of your grandma to compare her to. So it's a meaningless statement. If she dies at 75 you'll never know if she would have died at 85 as a non smoker
she will in the next 5yrs. I bet she bruises easily & cuts take a while to heal. Mum was the same but at 75 she was told she had 15 months to live & the doctor was spot on.

$15 vs $60 simple supply and demand, the government's worse enemy
My bigger concern is how some drugs are cheaper than cigarettes and you cannot control outcomes&I guarantee drug use has gone up&government should look at real cost to Australians

Australia is one of the most expensive $$$$ countries in the world for tobacco products,, the government is the only reason there is a black market,,,,,
Increase taxes on food, most people die from poor dietary habits...not tobacco, alcohol or old age.
Anyone could see what was going to happen when the government started with the high taxes on smokes....Now there is more taxpayers money going into investigations because of these tobacco wars here in Australia and the government is the cause of it..... Was all very well about smoke free zones but trying to control people's lives is a real issue...
A pack was $6.50 a few years ago (consecutively for years), until they added an additional 35 cent tax. In the few years since, the price per pack has doubled and another increase is to come within a month. Non smoking voters, I don't know how you think making the tobacco companies more rich & powerful and smokers more poor are helping smokers. Something is wrong when I can go to Japan and get American imported cigarettes for 1/4 the price as the same cigarettes in America.
Massive theft from addicts. Prices doesn't stop addiction, it only makes people poor.
I tell you what they should drop the tax on. Draught beer. I don't drink much but I used to go to the pub for the social aspect. A couple of pots and a chat. Now there's no one there. It's unaffordable. It's killing pubs and isolating people.
they want teh property for developing. so everyone stays home, gets drunk in silence, dont want us talking or getting out. buy online. deliver to your door. pay online. dont converse. dont go out. beat the missus, the DV case means more funding for police, more "calls for more surveillance"... no where to talk, nowhere to relax, nowhere to be human...
make sure to watch the footy... in a few weeks, its cricket for the next 6 months... dont think, just sit at home alone. got all you need in your lap...

Now the smokes cost over $500.00.
Why don't you drink at home for a bit over $2.00 a beer?

I've spent the last ten years in Malaysia and paid RM19 for a pouch and RM15 for a pack of smokes. That's like AU$5... Now you're paying $50 a pack, that's basically RM150... There is no justification for this, it is extortion. People will not stop smoking they will just find alternatives or be forced to pay more. The people need to stand up and fight back, regardless if you're a smoker or not, this is absolutely ridiculous prices.

That's me I smoke 150 grams of Winfield a fortnight
The only thing more addictive than tobacco is tobacco tax money
If they could make the nicotine spray affordable id switch to that but the price is even more ridiculous.
The black market isn't everywhere. Sure some people will be able to source cheap illegal cigarettes, mainly in cities, but for the majority of the population they will never encounter a black market source. So the majority of smokers will continue having to pay the taxes
