This sequence is chilling. The perfect effects and tension were very well constructed, Robert Zemeckis is an excellent director. I had the privilege of watching it in the cinema.
I saw this film in an NYC theater the summer I made the biggest decision in my life and go to film school. I hadn't seen the film again in 27 years, and just three weeks ago watched it again with my 10 year old son. Contact will be seared in my memory for the rest of my life.
This is a great scene. The way that the alien technology begins to reveal itself as far superior to human technology...the sheer amount of power and energy that the machine generates...the breakdown in communication between Ellie and the control room. This is an underrated movie.
I always had the impression that human tech was just barely advanced enough to produce the machine. The aliens would have carefully designed it both as a test and to limit risk to humans. I was a bit surprised that they weren't clearer about NOT having any restraints inside. I'm assuming that Ellie was in some way protected from injury when the core hit the net, though she was banged up. The broken restraint could have crushed her otherwise.
"I’m OK to go!" For some reason, this phrase resonates very profoundly for me, brings tears to my eyes. Such a pragmatically poetic statement of self-determination & empowerment. ❤️
Many who watched it said , yaa it was a good movie .. a very few of us .. FELT SOMTHING ..much more impactful .. as if there was a curious message , that we don't understand , ,, but it does give us the " feeling " IF ONLY IT WAS REAL "
i loved how they treated ken and how the actor played him (wonderful actor btw, can't remember his name offhand). they don't spell out that he's blind at all they just show you after a few minutes of him already being present and having a conversation.. when he goes to shake ellies hand and it's not in the right place it suddenly just clicks. (plus the way he was looking around which is really great acting) but they don't mention anything else about it.. they just show the evidence and continue with the story. that's a very graceful technique.. and it treats the audience more respectfully i think.
I'm no actor, but if I was and I wanted to play a blind person then aside from method-training for the role I would make sure that I was just wearing contacts that blocked out my pupils onset.. so that I'm honestly not seeing jack shit without necessarily looking any different! xD
William Fichtner. One of the great character actors. He’s been in a ton of stuff, mostly supporting roles and bit parts, guest acting spots in single episodes or short arcs. He had a fantastic episode in The West Wing.
Came across an interesting fact the other day....the original concept used for the machine in Contact was originally conceived for a never filmed scene in Terminator 2. John and Sarah Connor along with Miles Dyson and the T800 were suppose to run across it as a time machine at the center of the Cyberdyne complex before destroying the building.
I love the part where the rockets fire to push the last ring. This is the best science fiction movie I've ever seen in terms of story and writing and the visual effects are superior to most of the CGI I see today.
An Einstein-Rosen bridge connects two distant points in space or time. You can spend hours somewhere else and return to Earth a second after the moment you left. Fascinating but messes with your head. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe illustrated this exact same concept.
I like how the alien technology transfer to the private sector was shown with the VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) corporate jet. New alien designed materials made such a design viable in a short period of time.
Amongst TOP 10 ScFi movies of ALL TIME, no doubt in my mind, for many many reason... I watched this movie for 20 times, and trust me people... I watched a lot of movies.... A LOT, and still Im saying: this movie is a PIECE OF ART - amongst TOP 10 ScFi ever.

She reminds me (call me emotional) when she is saying: "Im OK to go... Im OK to go"... on every human who went into unknown trough our history considering our exploration nature... That really gave me goosebumps.

+Tim Roberts 2001 Space O. (my favorite ScFi) has shown us combination of faith and science in indirect way, in genius way, but this movie has shown that same combination in direct way, and in my opinion; as well on genius way, on It's own way.
We need a sequel or a mini series to this. Twister was recently lit, we need to see how some of the tech was used and who else went through the machine after.
I loved the rocking of the ship during the countdown, whether the energy released by the machine was churning the water or was affecting the ship directly.
It some how .. created a deep massless gravitational field .. ( which is not possible, and started to pull everything in to the core ( center ) of the machine . even the clouds where feeling the effect and being pulled toward the machine .. very cool effect .
the wormhole itself bends space time to connect 2 points. This is merely the affect of that warp being experienced outside the bridge. Just like you would experience time dilation outside a black hole.

The closer you get to a gravitational field THE SLOWER time goes for YOU .. and every else , NOT in that frame of reference, WILL speed up , relative TO YOU .
My all-ime favorite, a real sci-fi not a thriller or action categorized as sci-fi because of some SFX but a film that actually explores the possibilities of science. Jodie Foster is the ruling lady of the acting world :)

This is such a brilliant movie! This scene, like many others, is so touching. To see this woman scientist who despite her fear of the unknown is determined and OK to go because of her courageous search for truth and knowledge and the possibility of contact at last, with advanced aliens. And how fitting that the aliens would make contact only with her, as the chosen one because of her heart and mind that search for truth and knowledge only.
Got to see this movie at a preview screening I won through a local radio station in Raleigh, NC. It was such a great movie, I love Jodie Foster in most of her movies, and any well done sci-if movie like this gets my interest!
The ending of this clip is, to me, my favorite part. She was initially beat out of the top spot by a complete tool of a person, who saw her responses to the committee, and used her lack of religion against her to be the first one to "ride the lightning", and despite his death, she was able to be the first at this alternate spot. Then, the first words out of her mouth as she dropped was "OH GOD!" had me in stitches for a long while after seeing this movie.
Love how at the trial, nobody mentions a gravity shift, transparent metal or how a door seals into the wall seamlessly. They should have sent a scientist.

Always bugged me how they were skeptical of her actually traveling anywhere. Amazingly picturized. I read the book and it was different with like 5 people in the pod iirc (2 Americans, Chinese, Indian, African I think) but this was something else. Awesome music, crescendo buildup, perfect dialogs, tension and deliverance at end. Also they see the EMF fields off the charts and ship pulled in etc. How did they dismiss her later so easily? Anyways, good that she was proven by the static recording. Also not even one pic/video frame made it from inside showing the translucence and wormhole?

Wow! I'd forgotten how gripping that scene is! Imagine all of the things that could go wrong. The bright glow at the centre of the hoops reminds me of those ufo's that pretend to be stars. It's like something akin to the Philadelphia experiment.

Some of Alan Silvestri’s best work in this film. Up there with The Abyss, Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future. What a score.

Thanks to this video I can now remember that movie. And now i know this movies name. I saw this when i was 5 years old. Now i must watch it again.

Amazingly picturized. I read the book and it was different with like 5 people in the pod iirc (2 Americans, Chinese, Indian, African I think) but this was something else. Awesome music, crescendo buildup, perfect dialogs, tension and deliverance at end. Also they see the EMF fields off the charts and ship pulled in etc. How did they dismiss her later so easily? Anyways, good that she was proven by the static recording. Also not even one pic/video frame made it from inside showing the translucence and wormhole?

Wow! I'd forgotten how gripping that scene is! Imagine all of the things that could go wrong. The bright glow at the centre of the hoops reminds me of those ufo's that pretend to be stars. It's like something akin to the Philadelphia experiment.
