steve musically it's not the best work of band but top 10 or even higher of this millenium in every genre.Listen classical suite in rap album. They outscored even Kanye West who taught from Roots for sure. This song is on the same level of greatness as Outkast's Liberation
Definitely. he has amazing lyricism, extensive vocabulary, always provides a flow that matches the instrumentation, can perform live without a hypeman, can freestyle continuously, gives impressive features for other artists, writes rhymes that can be both dark and gritty or personal, and has covered so many different subjects and issues in his verses. Its a crime he's not more well known internationally
Black Thought, what a constructive solider that embodies the righteousness and infinite depth that we still can cultivate within ourselves no matter what our circumstances. Big up to the greatest band The Roots, their efforts are always legendary. Bilal, singing heavenly hurricane, no one else has it like he does! Love love love love!!! Peace!
FROSTY DA SNOWMAN Rap jazz.I don't like when someone calls dead genre.Beastie boys where music help to dance. In hip hop main dude or one of the main is dj.Rap and hip hop are different genres but yeah it's one of the best example of RAP
I know i'm asking or wishing for the impossible, but there needs to be more bands and artists like The Roots & Black Thought.... The Roots inspired me to buy a acoustic guitar, teach myself, and my son. Anybody here in The ATL know if and when The Roots are performing here?????
One thing that surprised me was how Black Thought sort of rewrote the lyrics to make a "clean" version. And to be honest, I like this version of the lyrics best. When he doesn't fall back on cursing, he's more thoughtful, more poetic. Gosh, these guys are amazing. If you can name one member who can't play their instrument with incredible tastefulness and skill... then you're wrong.
This album and track will forever be new for me, no matter how many times I revisit it. It'll always be a new experience. I bought this album on day 1 and it'll always be timeless along with "How I Got Over" 🎶
Can't heap enough superlatives upon this band, but this cut was simply magic----with the interplay between Bilal and Captain Kirk channelling Prince and Hendrix while Questlovle's drumming would've made Max Roach and Elvin Jones raise an eyebrow or two in approval that more than secures him as an all-time great drummer, per Rolling Stone. This performance was so great that it made me appreciate the album version even more, which one doesn't usually think about on an album they they love and play completely through with no skipped tracks!
"We obviously need to tone it down a bit / Running round town spending time like it's counterfeit" = genius metaphor. Man, who are the 13 people who don't like this?
legendary. who else is out there that is even in the arena with the roots? even more importantly, who is taking this incredible groove and fusion forward? who's worthily following in the roots' footsteps? I ask you...
Holy Shit! This by far Best Performance on any talk show. WOW. The Roots are the best and Black Thought is on a different level when it comes to straight emceeing....WOW.
The Roots are so good I'm still surprised they ever became successful!! ...and Bilal has been music's best kept open secret for the last 12 years. MUSIC!!
Mariateresa Costanzo Byrne this genre is Rap jazz and there aren't so many artists in this genre. There were Jungle brothers,Outkast. Now it's Kendrick Lamar(On every album except last but most memorable was Butterfly)
+JTMFlash Just know that what you are listening to here is Hip-hop, not rap. Rap does suck for the most part. Hip hop is, however, one of the most profound and essential genres in modern music. More insightful things are being discussed in hip hop than in any other genre of music today... Just my opinion but backed up by lots of research :)
Lol go for it.. and partial right this is rap the spoken language of this enity thats hiphop..Rythmn.And.Poetry..Represent.All.Poor People or People ..made by the ppl for the ppl!! HIPHOP!!!
Ladies and gentlemen the roots in my eyes a bit underrated (at least in my country that is for sure cause the most people only know the seed 2.0 😂) wish to see you guys perform je day in holland I would come for sure!!!
maybe...top1? 25 years, thousands of shows, 10+ albums, not just a rapper but a lead vocalist in every sense of the term, i dont know about you but i never heard a mediocre verse from thought, brings the hammer everytime
