I'm from Cyprus and in 2018 my best friend was showing me pictures of his excursion to the red lake of Mitsero mine. In the pictures he shows me the suitcase on the shore of the lake, and tells me he was thinking with his company to open it and that they were joking about finding a body inside. No Irish man died they took down a right few Dutch on tell they ran out of ammo they surrendered worse part was plains flying over there was no cover as they rained down on them with bullets . They became prisoners of war . When they got home they were called cowards given a white feather they said here only heroes are dead heroes . The Irish government wouldn't send in supplies into the battle . They got their meddles and were recognised as heroes in the 90's . The man died 2 weeks ago . He got shot over there after his release from been prisoner of war he spent 7 years in hospital . Film made about the siege of jadotville it came out about 4 years . As a historian I just have to point out, that all of Stalins political surrounding was complacent in his crimes. Kirov, for example, was one of the key organizers of Holodomor, man made famine that took lives of nearly 10 million ukrainians. He was an author of the "5 wheats law", that made "stealing" grain frome state punisheble by death, as while ukrainians were dying of hunger, USSR was selling more grain abroad then ever.
My poit is, as mush as it is important to understand that Stalin was a monster, one should not have compassion for the monsters who surrounded him. Communist party and nazi party were truly monsters alike.

    • @Josh93B93

Dont forget to mention that at the same time as Stalins rule the Ukrainian population somehow went from 22 million to 38 million showing an increase of around 700,000 per year, you would think with how much of a monster Stalin was that the population would shrink, not grow, especially with the 5 grail law and the holodomor and the purges and whatnot, the census records just dont match the numbers reported in the black book of communism, and between Ukraines census records and the black book only one of them has been discredited as falsified propaganda, and it wasnt the censuses.
Also, just to add on to that, Stalin wasnt perfect, no one is, he admitted as sush in his three seperate request sent to the Politburo requesting to resign from his position, all of which were denied by the Politburo.

So, to the shame of being from the country that did this, was added the shame of not even knowing about it...

I just happened upon it on the internet and was furious and confronted my history teacher about it, you can't bury this. She took it to heart and we spend a full semester on it. I hope they still teach it, Leopold II is on top there with all the worst people in the world yet we seem to try and bury it. I don't really care about patriotism, I kind of like how tiny we are, our go to humor is self deprecating, but I'm of the belief you need to know everything, even the horrible, especially the horrible,if you want to grow.

Well, it wasn't really the fault of Belgium as a country. While other countries had their colonies ruled by the government, Congo was not a regular colony, it was a personal property of one man, who was also the king of Belgium who wanted to rule as an absolute monarch over someone, which he couldn't in Belgium itself. Belgium as a country actually didn't want to colonise Congo and later took the power from the king because he was too cruel.

He ensured high profit margins for his investors, including USA and other major European countries, and minions for their loyalty to do his bidding. Everyone turned a blind eye to the natives' suffering until the public outcry cannot be contained anymore in 1908. That's 23 years of terror under the reign of Belgium, it's worsed than WWII which lasted 3 years. Even after 1908 when Congo Free State was annexed from Belgium, the natives were still subjected to forced labour through coercive tax. So no to your point, the whole country of Belgium was respondible for the genocide and atrocious exploitation of the Congo natives and their land. This video only scratched the surface of Belgium's crime against Congo, dig further if you wish to learn more

The belgians forced the labor and quotas but the actual punishments and the means of punishment was all their own people and they weren't forced the do the things they did like eat that father's little girl... Same concept with slavery in general, nearly all slaves were actually captured and sold to Europeans by their own people. I dislike how all the evils of the world are shoved on the backs on Europeans, these crimes and acts would have taken place REGARDLESS of their involvement, maybe not to the same extent in some areas but nonetheless

There was a woman in Liberia that was being filmed. It was fairly recently. In it, a "reformed" militia leader, a killer, a child abducter, and the man who personally oversaw the deaths of her family and her sexual abuse, was telling her "You *HAVE* to forgive me man."
Because you see, he claimed he had found God. She couldn't look at him. Instead, the cameraman managed to get her in the foreground, and the mass murdering demon in the back. The look on her face is the exact same one that that father had in that photo.
