Great video❤️💫Success depends on the amount of hard work and risk you take. Regardless of so many financial challenges, I thank God for a life transforming occurrence after past struggles.
Giving her my initial savings of $43,000 to invest in a brokerage account was a turning point in my life. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience and the best decision I ever made!
Tom thanks for this information! I have back up for my all electric home...but now it just doubled ! I never ever heard about those fans used with cast iron ,and the price is great. Thanks again for this was wonderful video ! All my gas backups have pizzo strikers, even my gas portable stove oven combo from camp chef...and it's 35 pounds I can carry it! Thanks again Tom... My brother taught me about emergency blankets sold @ Walmart (& I've seen some @ dollar stores on occasion). back a decade ago when I traveled quite a bit in my car 1000s of miles so, of course, the fear was if the car broke down in a blizzard & how to stay alive. They are sold in the automotive section & are in a little tiny box maybe 2" by 3" so don't take much room either. I was informed by a friend that they were originally designed for astonauts & they DO LOOK like a sci-fi movie item, imo. However, they have & will save lives. God bless you. Hopefully the shelter has space. If not, you know many times a lot of places will provide a makeshift "warming center". ❤
Additionally you can get an emergency mylar blanket, available at some dollar stores, and also anywhere camping gear is sold. Try Walmart, and others. Very small package, ambulances and other first responders have them, as they reflect your own body heat back to you. Please stay safe and take care. God bless.😊❤
That’s what I’m remembering from home & my grandparents. Their home had been built on to. So the kitchen cwas a little separate from the LR. They had a big furnace in there & sometimes we would dress next to the furnace. Good memories from all. Thank you Mr. Tom for the good & perhaps life-saving information! Remember the commercial, “And I told two friends &…”. On & on. So surely this helped someone. That weather is no joke or playing around!!! I love you dearly Mr. Tom & loved ones, Including the fur babies. God bless you. Thankful you’re staying warm & toasty.🙏🏻💞🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
As long as there’s some form of ventilation (like your mom did) or else it’s carbon monoxide fumes! My mom used to turn one stove eye on and put a big pot of water on to boil. Heat and humidifier in one!

Great information, Mr. Tom. Our stove is gas too.👍 We never turn our heater on (we live in Florida) but it was 64 degrees in our house this morning so I decided it was a great time to bake biscuits and warm up the kitchen.😋 The spouse's mother hung a wool blanket over the kitchen doorway and heated the room with the oven. Stay warm, everyone.
Thanks for all the videos you have been doing recently. The more, the better my friend. I am in Dekalb County about 15 miles south of Fort Payne. They are saying 4-6 inches of snow and possible freezing mix for Friday here. Up to 8 inches for us on Lookout mountain and other higher elevations. Hopefully we will be able to stay in out if it. Take care and stay warm.
This is the fan i needed to circulate the heat from my wood stove. It tends to go right down the hall to 2 seldom used rooms. It's a big Vermont Castings Reliant that heats my whole house and if need be i could cook on it. I had 2 minisplits installed this yr because the wood is too much for me to handle on my own now. I'll always keep a few cords in the wood shed for emergensies though. I also have a propane gas stove like you for cooking and if I had to a 2 burner Coleman and a gas grill. I have wall sconces in each room with candles and a flash light by each door as well as the basement and kitchen. Also a Generator for freezer, fridge, lights and well pump. Up here in Maine its impotant to prepare for winter storms. Blessings, Rose 😊
Tom there was a storm up here in the Northeast known as the Blizzard of 78. We lived in Southern Massachusetts at the time and lived through it. My parents had 7 foot drifts in their back yard and were without power for a full week. They had an electric stove and their charcoal grill was burried in one of those drifts. Luckily for us they had a woodstove at either end of the first floor and enough wood stored to get us through it. My Mom cooked on those stoves and kept all 7 of us fed. She cooked whole chickens, roasts, soups and stews in Dutch ovens and the whole house stayed warm. As a teenager it was embedded in my memory to be as prepared as possible. Stay warm and safe. Rose😊
Yes they are but they're real value is the way they're made and reliability. Mines an older one and works like a charm. No electricity needed like a pellet stove either.
Stay warm , fortunately we have a wood furnace, I should get a fan to help distribute the heat, our blowers won’t work without power. I’m considering buying a solar generator, we do have a gas generator but it is so loud and need to have plenty of fuel on hand. Stay safe.
I just ordered a thermal fan and the same thermometer you showed us. I knew about the gas stove working if the power went off, but I did not know about the iron skillet helping to radiate heat. This was an excellent tip that really could be life saving. I'm in Colorado, and it can get cold quickly, especially if the electricity goes out. Thanks so much for the tip Mr. Tom.
My power just came on about an hour ago, having been off for 24 hours here in the mountains of Virginia. Ice storm with temps in the 20's and teens. Brrr. Love my propane fireplace! It saved the day.
@@heidimisfeldt5685, good idea! We have bad weather coming in again on Friday! Yuck. It's the freezing rain and sleet that cause the power outages here (treelimbs). Snow isn't so bad.
Awesome Mr. Tom. Both my mother and my grandparents did that. The problem now a days is most people in or near the city depend on electricity. If they loose power they need to have a back up plan. Worse case senerio for me being all electric is a tent or blanket fort with sleeping bag and extra blankets and layer clothes. If they are smart & prepared they will have already winterized their home. Ya know plastic on the windows, weather stripping on the doors and things like that. ❤
Thank you so much for this video Mr Tom it was very useful! Haven't been able to watch a video in a good short minute LOL I take care of my elderly mother and lately it has been a pretty big job, but I don't regret 1 minute of it. This year she turns 91. I love watching your channels because I feel like I have learned so much, and it feels like I'm there with you. Thank you so much to you and Gracie and the kitty crew for all you do! When I do have a moment to myself I'll sneak outside really quick and work on a raised bed with a timer and a baby monitor to keep an eye on her ..... and run back inside . Got to get those beds ready to rock and roll after the last frost. hugs to you and yours from Texas! Hope you had a good Christmas and a happy new years.
And, it does feel kind of like we’re there with Mr. Tom, I sure agree!! We need to take care of our Moms & Dads, to the best of our ability. Lost my Mama when she was 71 & I was 51. I’m 71, now. 🙏🏻💞🙏🏻
Ahhh the memories Mr. TOM. My Mom always put a large pot of water on the pilot light stove. My brother threw that old stove out when the house was cleared out in 2019. I have one of those fans....thanks for the tip!!! ❤❤❤
this makes me sad. I hope you are staying warm during these cold days. I know how isolating that life can already be but it can feel even more so when the power goes out.
Oh Mr.Tom, the wood stove fan is amazing! Many many years ago, our only source of heat in our old wood mill house built on the 30's was our wood stove. This little fan would sure have sure been something to have way back when. Hopefully the cold weather will move on out soon for you and the kitties!
You could boil water in the pan then pour it into a hot water bottle .Even in the summer I have a hot water bottle it helps with my pain love this video Mr Tom
When I was a kid, we heated our home with burners and a Dearborn. Turned it off at night when we went to bed. Yep, ae heated up the room we were in. Then, close the kitchen and go to the livingroom for the day. Then the bedroom. My grandparents were poor and were young during the depression. I learned a lot from them. I LOVE THAT LITTLE FAN!
Thank you Mr Tom!!! Worried all night about the power going out with it being so cold. I ordered the wood stove fan (have a gas range and a cast iron griddle). Problem solved 😊
God has blessed me with some woods a chainsaw and a woodshed. Electric is so expensive and getting worse. I got a wood burning stove, turned off the Mini split and am enjoying my radiant wood heat and watching the fire through the glass door. I have one of those fans on top of it and an electric fan behind it to force the heat out into the house. God is good.
Hi Mr Tom & Gracie! I knew about this but I don't have a gas stove anymore - I've watched your video because it was a joy to see. I guess I'm like you talking to my critters & I know your video eill help several people. Tell Gracie she is definitely a smart girl assisting you & teaching. Its very cold here in S Oregon right now & I'm not feeling well, so Im huddled in my blsnkets with my coffee this morning 🌅 thankyou for the fan idea because I have a wood stove but no fan when power goes out & the heat takes awhile to get through the house so I block rooms off-so I'll get this fan- I love this🐾🐾💞🙏
Thank you dear Mr Tom for this vital information. It’s very cold in Eastern Pennsylvania today. Keep warm, safe and be healthy. A warm hug for you and kitties
Hi Mr. Tom. Thanks for sharing. I knew about lighting the gas stove, but not about the cast iron pans or the fan! Just found the fan on Walmart for 26.99! Super helpful. You are a boatload of knowledge! Karla in Cali.
Hi Tom, nice to see you. Years ago when we lost power during a snow storm, I lit the burners on my gas stove and put a large pot of water on to boil. It gave off steam heat and warmed my kitchen up a lot. After it warmed up the kitchen, I opened up the room to the living room. We got through the storm nice and warm. Your idea of the fan is good. You should have a CO detector near by though, as if your house is pretty tight, after a few hours, the CO can rise and you will need to open some windows a bit. Have had that happen too, when leaving a pot of water boiling with spices in it for several hours, and the detector went off. Called the fire department, and they checked it, and said our house must be pretty tightly sealed, as the CO was going up, just from the flame on the stove burning for a few hours. Thanks for the video. Like the fan idea.
Used to heat with gas stove in my apartment until the landlord came by and squashed that. He got irate as he had to pay the gas bill. He had the heat turned down so low that it got very cold and I had little children. The first floor tenant was a monster who went into the basement and turned the hot water heater off one weekend so we had no hot water to bath the kids. Landlord wouldn't take my calls. I finally got out of rentals and hope I never have to go back. I packed a small wood stove and stove pipe away for the possibility of the electric going out for long periods of time. I even stacked up some firewood to use in it. After the big freeze here in TX a few years ago, we got prepping in mind now.
Good morning Mr Tom. Having a gas furnace and water heater was one of the major factors when I bought this house in mid-Kentucky. I immediately had the gas line extended to the stove area, disconnected the electric range, and put in the glorious gas range. After 20 years without a gas stove, I went into baking heaven. There is such a difference cooking and baking with gas, not to mention the perks of being able to heat without electric. Prefer the older stove to be able to light the oven. I remember putting socks and gloves on the open oven door to warm up. Thank you for telling us about the fan. I, like many others, thought those were only good for wood stoves. I'll have to buy a couple given this freeze we're going through. Have a blessed day, you, Gracie, and the kitty krew. ❤
I'm a boomer and I remember that very thing when it was cold mom always turned on the burners sometimes even with bake something in the oven then after it was finished just leave the oven door open. Good memories my family taught us many many survival skills they were from large families and they were from poor families. I wish I was raised in those days.
Hi mr tom! Yes i have gas range too. Havent used a skillet on it tho. No power outages for quite awhile thankfully. I did have a small gas range in cottage i used to rent. Wall furnace would go out in high winds, so i did use oven to heat up cottage til landlord could come fix it. And growing up fairly poor, we had an outhouse, pumped our own water, and heayed the house ww a potbelly stove and a wood cookstove. Later my mother got an electric stove, which she loved of course. But when power went out, we were warm, had water, and mom cooked on one of the stoves. Oil lamps as well. Some of the neighbors would come over to pump water for themselves. Always had what we needed. 😊😊
Yes I remember my parents and grandparents turning on the stove to heat up the house especially in the morning. I used to love hearing my Dad shake the grate on the coal stove. It kept everything warm. Thanks for this important video. Youre a good teacher! Blessings. ❤️🙏
I really liked the idea with the cast iron skillets on the stovetop & stove fan. My mother would turn on the stove oven in the winter mornings..the warmth felt great. We lived in a single trailer in Michigan and they weren't exceptionally well insulated. It is a little after 10 pm and is 20° presently...our high tomorrow will be 17°. Stay warm and inside your home if at all possible...absolutely crazy weather these days!!!🥺
My bestie and neighbor when I was a kid had a floor vent like yours, which was wonderful. On cold days, I would stand on the vent to warm up before the trek to school. Once, I melted my raincoat! Good times in Alabama.
When we moved our 5 th wheel to Florida on our property .we had to wait for the electric co to deal with all the outages from the hurricanes before they would set our pole and turn it on..that generator saved us for almost a month ..went broke buying gas but it got us thru...you don't realize what you got when it comes to electric power when it goes out ..
Absolutely 💯 %. Heavily dripping, and letting it run full for a couple of minutes once in a while, then back to previous heavily dripping. Flush toilets every once in a while, take showers, do laundry, do the dishes. It's a job to keep things from freezing solid.🥶
I used to work at the water utility. They would recommend to let it run the thickness of a pencil. Course, I'm in Wisconsin. It gets frigid up here. Our pipes are buried 6 ft deep
Thank you Mr. Tom. I do remember this from when I was little. My mother used to warm our kitchen this way in the winter. We lived in Maine at the time. Stay warm day my hello to the kitty crew.
Good morning, Mr. Tom. My stove is 24 years old and I will never get rid of it. Because it does not have the electronic ignitions for any of it. So when my power goes out up here in Central New York. That's exactly what I do, I turn the oven on and Set it at 400° And I turned the burners on and use it for a heater. And it helps a lot.
Please stay safe Tom, my state of California is under fire… out of control fire, state of emergency…you and I are experiencing one extreme condition to another…. God help us 💔🙏💔🙏
Very fine teaching video, Mr. Tom. I do remember Gramma and Grandpa warming the kitchen with their gas range. I've known about the fireplace fans but never put that knowledge together with the gas range capabilities. Thank you for making the final link. I guess I'm not very good at thinking outside the box.
Stay safe and warm Mr.Tom it was only 7 below here in Kansas city Missouri this morning I stayed in all day no way I was going out I remember the cold winter's when i was a child in Missouri we even had a out house till my dad put a bathroom in our house we also had a would stove for heat people here in the city have a fit when electricity goes out me i just go back to the old ways of survival thank you for helping folks ❤
Hello Mr. Tom. Glad to be back in the neighborhood to view the helpful video to prepare for the winter & other emergencies. Thanks 4 the helpful information in time of need. Be sure to get the carbon monoxide system for your house. You & the kitty crew continue to stay & warm. ☃️⛄
Hello Mr.Tom! Gas stoves are a life saver for sure! I don't like electric stoves. My Gas stove has the pilot that you have to light with lighter or match.I love it! Thank you Mr.Tom for sharing all this for the folks that can benefit from this grat teaching! Have you heard about the gas water heater thing yet? I hope you and Gracie and the whole kitty krew are having a relaxing warm night!
I thought it was your solar generator allowing you to have light. Wow, you bring me back to the pbs station giving a science class once a week to us 5th graders. But you are teaching us for a reason. Thanks Mr. Tom.
The Blizzard of 93 taught many lessons! It's important to fill up your bathtub with water to flush was a huge lesson learned. if we hadn't had a kerosene heater, we'd have frozen to death, literally. I now have gas logs and a big propane tank. No city gas up here in the sticks. Those wood stove fans are a good idea! Why is lamp oil so scarce? Lots of lamps but little oil. Stay warm!
When i was small, the old gas stove heated the house up north. Was 32 here in Central Florida this morning. Used the space heater for the first time this winter in the morning.
Hi, Mr Tom 😁 great way to teach. No gas here in my rental. But I remember using the pilot light in one of the places we lived. I keep my wooden matches in a jar. I put the strikers in the lid. Matches sitting out around here with the humidity won't light, just crumble. Wood stove heater fan... Yes, it's a good trick ( scientifically speaking😅). Edit: yes. Definitely opened the oven & lit the pilot light during that blizzard of 67 or was it 68? Put iron Dutch oven on top & skillet. Once they got hot, they cooked breakfast fast. One of the first things I learned was to light that piloting the oven.
Mr. Tom, living in the city back them, my mother used to turn on the gas range and put a big pot of water for steam. She also lit the oven. Thanks for this 411. The gas in my town in upstate NY is now 3.19$. God bless you and the kitty krew. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. Please make more videos like this for us. Some of us need some help with our homesteads. Praying for your health.
I have one of those fans. I can use it for my buddy heater and a UCO candleire. I also have a VESTA heater and stove. I'm ready for no heat. Now if the power went off on a hot summer's day, then I'd suffer. I'm a heat whimp😂
We lost electricity right after Christmas and was out for 14 hours. Then again a few days ago for about 7 hours. Thankfully we have a couple gas generators. We got some oil lanterns, plenty flashlights and a couple emergency weather radios that can also charge phones and other items. I got mine from my friend for Christmas and love it 🥰
Thank you. In the early 1970s in the south (it’s always been COLD in winter in the south) I remember getting dressed in front of the oven. You’re correct about the gas stove. My mom would have gotten up and made drip Coffee for her and my dad. She homemade hot chocolate for us kids and warmed up our clothes. The kitchen would be so warm. 😊 a homemade breakfast and we were off to wait for the schoolbus. 🚌 Later on, we had a wood stove and I sure miss having that. I plan to one day have some sort of wood heat again. You have the best ideas. I keep my cabinet doors open under my sinks on cold nights, to let the heat in to help keep pipes feom freezing. It’s it’s down single digits I’ll drip my faucet too.

And, it does feel kind of like we’re there with Mr. Tom, I sure agree!! We need to take care of our Moms & Dads, to the best of our ability. Lost my Mama when she was 71 & I was 51. I’m 71, now. 🙏🏻💞🙏🏻
Praying for you and all those dealing with this cold...
Ahhh the memories Mr. TOM.
My Mom always put a large pot of water on the pilot light stove. My brother threw that old stove out when the house was cleared out in 2019.
I have one of those fans....thanks for the tip!!! ❤❤❤
Hi Tom!im glad you are ok
this makes me sad. I hope you are staying warm during these cold days. I know how isolating that life can already be but it can feel even more so when the power goes out.
That's when I did deep within
Thank you, Mr. Tom!
Learned something new tonight. Thank you, Mr. Tom. Stay warm, and God bless you.
I’m glad you found the video helpful!
Glad you & the kiitty crew are safe & ok Papa Tom.
Great idea on the wood stove fan! Thanks for the tip! Stay warm and safe.
Thanks mr Tom for ur tip .We love u to.
Its very cold here in S Oregon right now & I'm not feeling well, so Im huddled in my blsnkets with my coffee this morning 🌅 thankyou for the fan idea because I have a wood stove but no fan when power goes out & the heat takes awhile to get through the house so I block rooms off-so I'll get this fan- I love this🐾🐾💞🙏
Watching again. ❤
Thank you dear Mr Tom for this vital information. It’s very cold in Eastern Pennsylvania today. Keep warm, safe and be healthy. A warm hug for you and kitties
Thank you. You sure taught me a lot. Just ordered a fan.
I hope it helps keep you warm!
Hi Mr. Tom. Thanks for sharing. I knew about lighting the gas stove, but not about the cast iron pans or the fan! Just found the fan on Walmart for 26.99! Super helpful. You are a boatload of knowledge! Karla in Cali.
I hope the fan helps keep you warm in California!
Thx great video
It sounds like you've got a really good system in place, and those socks and gloves on the oven door are a classic!
Hello and Happy New Year! This was my first time watching your channel. Wow! Thank you, teacher. I learned something new and helpful.😊
Welcome to the neighborhood, so glad to have you here.
Beautifully done.
Thanks so much! I tried to capture the feeling of being cold and in the dark.
Wow.
Tom that was some good information. ☺️👍🐈⬛ Gracie and the kitty/opossum crew.
Gracie and the kitty/opossum crew are always happy to help!
I'm a boomer and I remember that very thing when it was cold mom always turned on the burners sometimes even with bake something in the oven then after it was finished just leave the oven door open. Good memories my family taught us many many survival skills they were from large families and they were from poor families. I wish I was raised in those days.
Mr. Tom and Miss Gracie, thank you for always sharing wisdom and time with us.
Stay safe, dry and warm, Mr. Tom and kitty crew
Thanks you for this sage advice Mr Tom ❤ when my elders talk I always listen. We can learn a lot from you 🥰
I appreciate that you value experience and wisdom.
Yes I remember my parents and grandparents turning on the stove to heat up the house especially in the morning. I used to love hearing my Dad shake the grate on the coal stove. It kept everything warm. Thanks for this important video. Youre a good teacher! Blessings. ❤️🙏
Yes I sure miss a woodstove
I'm glad you found it helpful, and I appreciate the kind words.
Thank you Mr. Tom for all your knowledge 🤗🙏🏻🇺🇸
Glad your making a lot of videos this week it's helping keep me occupied while buried under snow....hopefully you don't get bad weather like us
Thank you Mr. Tom for showing us survival skills for when these storms come our way. Love and hugs to you and the Kitty Krew 💙😻
Oh no u just went to the store 😂😂😂 oh dear hope it comes back on soon stay safe kitty crew and Mr tom 😎❤ I just love Gracie 😍😍❤
My bestie and neighbor when I was a kid had a floor vent like yours, which was wonderful. On cold days, I would stand on the vent to warm up before the trek to school. Once, I melted my raincoat! Good times in Alabama.
Great tips Mr. Tom stay cozy and warm.
Glad you are home and safe❤
Excellent video! I love those wood stove fans! ❤🙏
When we moved our 5 th wheel to Florida on our property .we had to
wait for the electric co to deal with all the outages from the hurricanes before they would set our pole and turn it on..that generator saved us for almost a month ..went broke buying gas but it got us thru...you don't realize what you got when it comes to electric power when it goes out ..
Thank you for your insight.
I remember not knowing what to do when the power went out….
It can be scary when the power goes out!
Thank you Tom. Nothing beats common sense. Very helpful!
❤ wow that was cool 😎 great idea and I Learned something new 😀 thank you Mr Tom 😀 ❤
Love it thank you
Leaving your faucets open enough to slow drip will help prevent frozen pipes.
Stay safe and warm!
Mr. Tom, this is a great and educational video that can save lives! Thank you and God Bless you always! 😊
I’m glad you found it helpful!
God help us 💔🙏💔🙏
🙏🏻💞🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Bless you all. 🙏
Mr.tom u are funny...😂 take care prayers 🙏
Stay safe and warm Mr.Tom it was only 7 below here in Kansas city Missouri this morning I stayed in all day no way I was going out I remember the cold winter's when i was a child in Missouri we even had a out house till my dad put a bathroom in our house we also had a would stove for heat people here in the city have a fit when electricity goes out me i just go back to the old ways of survival thank you for helping folks ❤
Hi neighbor 😊 here in SE Central Kansas, it's to cold 🥶 not going out but to take the doggy out & straight back in 😅
Good informational video MrTom, thanks for sharing, YAH bless you brother !
Hello Mr.
Thanks Mr. Tom.
I'm glad you found the video informative, it's important to be prepared for anything.

Yes, bc we never know!!🙏🏻💞🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
The Blizzard of 93 taught many lessons! Stay warm!
If you're needing lamp oil to stock up and can't find it anywhere local, I've ordered it from Amazon before.
@@SilverHairHomemaker Thank you so much! It should get here on Saturday.
I’m glad you found this video helpful and I appreciate the prayers.
I have one of those fans. I can use it for my buddy heater and a UCO candleire. I also have a VESTA heater and stove. I'm ready for no heat. Now if the power went off on a hot summer's day, then I'd suffer. I'm a heat whimp😂
Brilliant!!! I had wanted to buy one of those fans last year. Never thought of putting it on the gas stove!! I just ordered two. Thank You Mr. Tom!!!!
We lost electricity right after Christmas and was out for 14 hours. Then again a few days ago for about 7 hours. Thankfully we have a couple gas generators. We got some oil lanterns, plenty flashlights and a couple emergency weather radios that can also charge phones and other items. I got mine from my friend for Christmas and love it 🥰
I’m glad you had backup power, it’s good to be prepared.
Thank you. In the early 1970s in the south (it’s always been COLD in winter in the south) I remember getting dressed in front of the oven. You’re correct about the gas stove. My mom would have gotten up and made drip
Coffee for her and my dad. She homemade hot chocolate for us kids and warmed up our clothes. The kitchen would be so warm. 😊 a homemade breakfast and we were off to wait for the schoolbus. 🚌
Later on, we had a wood stove and I sure miss having that. I plan to one day have some sort of wood heat again.
You have the best ideas. I keep my cabinet doors open under my sinks on cold nights, to let the heat in to help keep pipes feom freezing. It’s it’s down single digits I’ll drip my faucet too.
