1 klm from Palma airport is the gas turbine unit for power production for the island. In summer, the island burns coal from its energy plant in the north of the island to supplement the shortfall from the gas turbine power units. Also, just outside Palma is the huge incinerator that burns the rubbish from the island. A few years ago, they expanded it so that they could burn rubbish from other EU countries. Mallorca has about 3% green energy from solar. More nonsense on being 'green.'

I don't get it? congestion charges are in alot of cities in the uk and they work well. Omissions from cruise ships aren't as bad as you make out. @ Dont get me wrong they have there place for sure and type of people that would use them but its very small this is why they are so many discounts and scemes to get you to buy them in the first place.. If you put any kind of milage on them in a daily use then they fall on there ass.. the few people that have them at my work have said wouldnt have one if it wasnt for the fact they can charge it at work for free and most have another petrol car that partner has for doing family stuff. as they can go into Low E zones and not be charge for work.. Dont get me started on the ethical part of what it takes to build one and damage it does to roads All the big manufactories have stopped or cut massively production on EVs and all the lay offs there doing in that sectors just shows you whats happaning.. depreciation of the car is massive thats if you can sell it as no one wants to buy a 2nd hand battery... but this is been kept out of main media best they can to not cause a panic and make the bottom fall out..

@MallorcaUnderTheSun To build a Metro line, from Arenal, to Santa Ponca, via the airport and Palma, is around 20 miles, and I have revised it down to 15 stations, bringing the estimated cost down to €3.5 Billion. A €10 airport tax for 10 years, will pay for the construction. Trains every 5 minutes, full Automatic operation. And stations within a 10 minute walk of much of the Palma bay. This will slash travel time to the resorts, and eliminate huge numbers of taxis, coaches and buses. Airport to Magaluf, 20 minutes anytime of day or night. Not the 1 to 2 hours it can take on a bus. If the government cares about the green agenda, this is a no brainer. I can put together a proposal, if you can submit it to the decision makers.

First thought, anyone trying to drive into the middle of Palma nowadays is mad, the only exception being those two car parks which is a problem . I guess its got to be park outside the Avenidas and then get a taxi. My diesel is 2007 so I have one max two years left. However living in the country will be fine and I use Manacor for most things nowadays. Having been here 50 years back in the day driving all around the old town was possible and fun( if your car wasn't too big) but those days are long gone. As for electric, go and research Sineu, Maria, Ariany etc and see how many charging points there are. One thing I have learnt living here is the surprises you don't expect. We all know the problems you can have with bureaucracy and then one day you have to do something and it works fast and perfectly. You just never know.
For your overseas punters in case you didn't mention, the avenidas are where the city walls used to be and were pulled down in 1902, a little while before I arrived. Franco was still in charge in 1975 so I did get to experience a bit of his regime.

Don't confuse "emissions " and "net zero CO2". Emissions issues are related to smog and respiratory conditions. We're taking about keeping Palma a clean and healthy place to live. The timeliness of these changes isn't that drastic and in time we naturally phase out old dirty cars. Those like me who drive 10 yr old cars have got a while to go. I, as an automotive engineer, have an inkling that the EV mandate in Europe will get pushed back a few years so we'll get a chance to drive clean EU7 petrol mild hybrids etc for a while longer... meanwhile this will hit Mallorquin people much worse than us privileged visitors.

There's nothing wrong with an 11 year old fiesta. It's still worth a lot of money. All used cars are. I've just bought a Cat C 2016 car but i live out in Pollenca. I just drive down to Son Fusteret and jump on the Metro. I don't like driving in Palma anyway. But... if you want to make the swap then there are plenty of Renault Zoes in the Spanish market at good prices.

The bus system is not family friendly. With the four of us I had to tap my card 4 times. Bus driver got angry after 2 told us to get on anyway. Tapping off at destination, driver gave me enough time for one tap before closing the doors. Ended up with fines for not tapping off correctly. Won't use the bus again. Its cheaper to hire a car with the fines. Found it hard to get out of Alcudia as its a hub and all the buses were full. Had to wait ages for passenger numbers to drop before I could get a bus where the driver would let us on. Great if you're solo, with a family, a nightmare.

Thanks! The Island appears to require a visit from non-zero President Trump. I'm sure he'd also claim the territory as American and build a substantial golf course. More seriously, are the buses electric or part of the problem? As to the very high emissions from the port, airport and island power plant this concentration must be pretty unique for such a modest land mass.
More positively, with the right charging infrastructure, EVs could work well but they require phasing in with government incentives to support home chargers and charging in addition to public chargers and vehicle purchase. About the only country to manage this successfully is Norway, which ironically has used its vast oil wealth to incentivise the transition from ICE cars to EVs. Given the excessive CO2 emissions from non-car sources. it seems silly to rush in the low emission zones in such a draconian way. I think what's needed is soft power and work on infrastructure initially.

Hypocrisy? Babe, didn't your parents tell you that two wrongs don't make a right. Just because aircraft and cruise ships aren't yet decarbonised, that is not a good reason to eradicate ICE vehicles with their noxious fumes and replace them with zero tailpipe emissions. Such a stupid and short sighted argument. There will be an immediate and measurable improvement in air quality. You will notice it yourself as you walk around the streets.
