    AV8: all the mechanical compromises and aerodynamic nightmares of a helicopter, plus the complexity and extra workload of a single engine jet. The best of both worlds! :-D

    Easily my favourite DCS Module. In answer to your question, the USMC, Italian and Spanish Navy still operate the AV-8B. To turn off the annoying "Pull up-pull-up", set your Radalt (Switch under the radio keybad), and then on the keypad press "alt", type in "50", and then press "ent". That will set your radalt warning to 50ft.

      That's a technique some chopper pilots and maybe harrier pilots use to practice hand stability. Try to keep a ball bearing centered on a metal sheet.

    • @paristo
      @paristo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TexasGreed Used to learn the mental state by using. Marble And dinner plate. So you learn to keep marble center of plate and then do controlled tiny movements to move it as wanted.
      As in helicopter controls it is "if you think it, you are giving too much input" level.
      After years flying helicopters the Harrier is super simple as it is so sluggish and balanced, as there is no rotating counter forces requiring predictive inputs.
      But F-35 is super easy compared to harrier, as you just tell it on what direction you want to go and it does all the rest.
      The Harrier IMHO is funniest fighter to fly in DCS as you get to do so fancy CAS. Constantly flying between combat and rearming site, while with Hornet you are still sitting returning back to base from first attack.
      I just hope that Razbam gets Harrier features implemented in this year as promised, as they are going to release F-15E in this year, and their promise was that no new modules are released until existing ones are completed from early access (M2000, AV-8B N/A and MiG-19P).
      And there is lots of things missing from Harrier so....

    I remember the first time I flew the F/A-18 simulator at NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL. As a helo jockey, I had my work cut for me me, and everyone was watching me. It was a dogfight, me against 4 other real Hornet pilots at other sim stations. I was in the "globe", a 3-D dome with a fixed cockpit, moving lasers and projectors. Long story short, I was spawned at angels 21, behind an enemy Hornet. He was within range of a sidewinder, so I fired, and killed him. A little too easy! After that, the rest of them teamed up against me and blew me out of the sky 3 times! It was a short flight! As I stepped out of the sim, the squadron commander quipped, "You know you can't hover in a Hornet, right?" Hahaha... Yeah, yeah.... LOL I learned my lesson! It was fun, though!!!

    The experience-to-effectiveness curve for the Harrier is one of the steepest in aviation. Rookies are sitting ducks for AA and god help them if they come up against even some 3rd generation fighters. But watch out for gnarly veterans (with several thousand hours) who have been known to leave many an opponent in superior equipment with an acute case of embarrassment.

    Don’t know about DCS or real airplane but from various other VTOL games,
    I think you virtually “touch down” midair left behind 20-50ft up your actual touchdown, then slowly transition and descent.
    Harrier specifically has good roll and pitch authority overall but while in hover attitude is managed by bleed air thruster and especially yaw is limited. Since vertical component of thrust + vertical momentum changes so easily, throttle response being slow not helping, btw maybe slower then normal turbines since diameter is huge, it’s easy to realize you’re dropping down to the ground too fast too late.
    You’ll be watching vertical speed, pitch angle, and altitude, while wrestling horizontal drifts, and controlling forward velocity, without getting too much momentum, in that order, I think - that was what I was doing in front of a PC at 10yo.

    You should try the F-14 in DCS. Amazing Aircraft and a lot of fun to fly! You also get a AI called Jester as your RIO who pretty cool
