  • Yellow-tailed Black cockatoos are big Australian forest birds - up to 65cm, more than two foot, long. Unlike other cockatoos, a large proportion of their diet is made up of wood-boring grubs.
Their massive bills are adapted to tearing apart trees and breaking into the large woody seed-pods of native banksias and the cones of introduced exotic pines.

I love the sound of these magestic birds. My friend recently was married at a winery at Mudgee and just as his bride walked down the isle a brigade of yellow tails started to sing. Such graceful birds - they were very lucky to have their blessing.

They're eerily cool when you can hear them wailing in the distance and then see them flying barely flapping their wings.

Thanks! Most of the vision (including the piece to camera) was shot a few years back at Batehaven over a period of a few days when a small family party of three was visiting an exotic pine in our garden. The vision of the birds flying and perching in the top of eucalypts was shot in Centennial Park. I had not wanted to do a piece on these birds until I had vision of the vital grub-hunting behaviour, and then, a few days ago I came upon one just off a busy path in Sydney Park, being watched fascinated passers-by and dogs and I was able to get what I needed effortlessly. This is why I almost always carry my camera!

Indeed. And a Glossy Black-cockatoo which is closely related to the Red-tailed. See here: th-cam.com/video/eZFUBAwkZ20/w-d-xo.html.
