My Cloverleaf Paintbox is a MESS! Cleaning & Filling it with Sennelier Watercolours + Painting

  • I had a bit of a paint-related accident when we went on holiday, in that the honey-based Sennelier watercolour paints in my Cloverleaf Paint box hadn't set properly, and a couple of them splurged everywhere! Today I am going to clean this palette up, add in MORE paint, and then swatch out the colours. I even did a Christmas painting...well, more of a colouring....but you will see!
    I've had this paintbox for a few years now but I've found some links to it as its still available to buy. You can also purchase separate palette inserts which is handy.

    I just love how this turned out, it really came together well. I love the blue around it too and really surprised how the paper performed! Those watercolor remind me of M graham, they are also honey based and will dry but they will always remain sticky when touched. However it makes them a dream to rewet and use so that's a plus.

    Oh my, that paint spill with the original palette! I don’t know how watercolor artists manage to fill their pans with the paint from the tubes and not end up with a rainbow colored desk😂 these looked like they set nicely (i think) but I never can tell because they are so glossy! I love the Sennelier’s. I want to add greenish umber to my palette because it seems like a pretty useful color. The flowers were very pretty and Christmasy and the paper seemed to hold up well! 🍃

    • @BeckyTregear

      Haha they really do need to sit out for a few weeks to set properly. Sennelier and M.Graham especially. I kept mine under a basket so the cats wouldn't stand on them, lol. Greenish Umber is a very useful colour! I am pretty sure it is Perylene Green, and it's one I have in a few palettes from other brands. Excellent for shadows. 😊

    Thank you for another wonderful video. Aren’t the Sennelier just wonderful? Have you ever tried a tube wringer to get all the paint out of the tube? Some folks even go so far as to cut the tubes open to get every last drop of pigment. Sennelier paint really goes far too, which is one of the many reasons that I find it a superb brand. Your palette hack is great too.

    My sennelier Naples yellow Deep was misbehaving as well, not as much as your orange but it can be hard to tell if it had set up enough. It took almost 2 weeks before i had enough trust to add it to a plein air bag.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yes certain paints defy drying at all costs. My orange looked like it was set, but it must have just been the very top, and underneath it was still runny, doh! We'd had a lot of rain that month, so humidity was a factor.

      Oh yes, being in a dry climate makes a huge difference! It is mostly dry here too, which is why my honey based paints usually set. But around the time we traveled, it had rained all through November so I guess the extra humidity really prevented them setting and I didn't realise it until too late, lol!!

    I'm coming late to this discussion, Becky, but reading through the comments, I don't think it's been mentioned: that the plastic shape in the palette is the thumb rest. There are 13 full pans and one half pan, rather than a standard 12 pan + two halfs, so the thumb rest doesn't actually take up what would be standard paint space.
    Also, you said that you added 2 - 3 drops glycerin to each half pan to stop them cracking. Did you do this with these honey based Sennelier paints? If so, it isn't surprising they wouldn't set...
    I think that cracked paint is an issue only because we have this bad habit (from childhood!) of stirring and scrubbing to take up paint from the pan, instead of stroking it, and we can't do that easily with cracked paint. Just add a couple of drops of water to the cracked paint a few minutes before using it. Also, brushes last longer if you stroke the paint, and decreases the tendency for that hole in the middle of the pan...
    I think I've said before how much I enjoy watching your videos and the fresh enthusiasm and reality that you bring to them. This calendar page: Oooh, Becky - daring to paint outside the lines? Yes!!! And a fresh and glowing result! Thank you!
    Oh - yes! I enjoy indigo as a colour, too!!!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A thumb rest makes sense, but since I tend to keep it on a table then an extra pan space it shall be! I made such a mess cutting it up, haha. And no I didn’t add glycerine to these Sennelier paints. They just don’t ever fully dry due to the honey. I had poured them and left the palette to set for a couple of weeks. They looked set on the top but underneath I guess some were still juicy and they ran everywhere when travelling.😭 M Graham paints do the same thing and stay sticky. I don’t really add glycerine to many paints, just a few from other brands which crack so much they fall out of the pans, lol.

    • @MrsBarnabas
      @MrsBarnabas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeckyTregear Thanks for the reply, Becky! I was a bit worried that I sounded officious with my comment!
      The only paint I have the cracking problem with is Winsor and Newton burnt umber, but I use a limited 12 colour palette of W&N Professional paints. I get tempted with added extras occasionally, but these do everything I need for my work. I have all sorts of oddments picked up as freebies at art fairs or from art magazines, and thoroughly enjoy using these for play time, as there are a glorious orange and violet, as well as indigo, vermilion and a couple of blues among them.
      I did a fun painting like your 'wrong' hand painting with the washi tape yesterday, only adding that W&N burnt umber to those five, and it is a glorious result. I was experimenting to see how a page of a 140gsm Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbook would cope. It has yellowed ivory colour pages to add interest! With all the washi tape, it coped with a really wet painting with puddled colours! I was amazed!!!
      My only sadness is that I only used an A5 page, but this sketchbook is my 'play & swatches' book and I knew that the A4 Daler-Rowney that I also use for play and experiments wouldn't take the water. I think this one coped because I just dropped in the paint and let it run. :)

    I'm glad you didn't throw the empty tube away- there's still paint! What if we have an apocalypse and can't get more! LOL 🤣 That cinerous blue looks beautiful, but I hesitate in case it's a blue similar to what I already have. Do you think you could do a video comparing colours like that across the top brands with the closest match so we could tell if it's a standalone colour worth getting? Like transparent orange Schmincke is supposed to be renowned for being a stunning version, but it's actually very close to my Daniel Smith and I feel like that happens a lot and I spend money on colours I didn't really need. 😕 On the other hand Winsor and Newton permanent rose is the clearest PV19 pink I have and worth buying. Their manganese blue hue is also unmatched in other brands I've tried so far- colour as well as the granulating behaviour ( I suspect it has their granulating medium in it). I don't have any Sennelier or M Graham, but you do..... 🙃

    • @BeckyTregear

      Thank you for your suggestion, I will have to figure out some colour comparison videos. I always seem to have such a gigantic pool of ideas and some of them tend to be forgotten but I do think this type of video could be an ongoing series. As for Cinereous Blue, it's a mix of Phthalo Blue Green Shade and Zinc White (PB15:3 & PW4) but I find it to be an excellent convenience colour and I would struggle to replicate it. I need to try I guess! 😂

    What a pretty painting! I am impressed how well it looks on that paper.
    I am surprised, that some of the Sennelier paints cracked in the palette. I wouldn't think that happens with honey based paints.
    I have a question. I know you have a few AS watercolours as well. I bought a bunch recently and many cracked in the palette after the paint dried, although I added a drop of glycerine when I poured them into the pans. Did you experience this too?

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah yes I have noticed some of the Sennelier paints will crack even with the honey in there. Whereas others never seem to dry, like that yellow orange, lol! I guess the pigments have some influence on that? With AS I get a lot more cracking, and so I increased the glycerine by adding 2-3 drops. That seemed to really help the ones which cracked the most so then they only crack a little bit. Yellow ochre is a shocker! That calendar paper worked amazingly well with watercolours so I guess I will be painting much of next year's calendar, haha!
