I’ve been a pilot since 1962. I retired as a Boeing 767 Captain twenty years ago. James, you make me belly laugh. Great stuff!

I'll 'never' fly on an airplane ever again, but 'if' I did, the only thing that would make me feel better instead of a "flotation devise" would be a "parachute"..?
Most accidents occur during take off and landing, where a parachute is worthless.

@@alan30189 He should notice that there are far more automotive collision repair shops than aircraft collision repair shops.
When I did contract work, we flew to several outreach clinics in small planes. The pilot would always come up to us before the flight and ask our weights for the same reason. And every time the nurses would lie about their weights, it seemed like all of them weighed 110 pounds. One time the pilot said to me after getting the nurses weight, I guess you are going to have to weigh 350 pounds if we want enough fuel to make it. I weighed about 220 at the time.
That's got nothing to do with having enough fuel. It's weight to lift ratio and center of gravity. They load the plane accordingly and obviously the fuel has weight in a fixed location. It ain't like they can shift the fuel tanks

I'm from Utah. I got a job in Louisiana. Everywhere I had been to that point that was shown on a map as land was land. California, Wyoming, Washington (state and DC), and New York City all represented their locale as land, and land is what they were. Then I flew from Dallas to Baton Rouge. Folks, Louisiana is not land. Oh there's trees, but I can't tell you what they're growing in, because all that's around them is water. Crash there and you're gonna need a flotation device. Heck I was flying from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and I realized that between the Great Salt Lake and Lake Mead a flotation device could come in handy landing in or taking off from either of those cities, which happen to be in the second driest and the driest states in the USA, respectively.

Maybe the plane struggles to get off the ground if you overload it (fill it up). I used to drive with my tractor trailer on fumes because the shipper always overloaded my truck.😁
Well that’s exactly it. They can only get off the ground with so much weight. What bothers me is when I’ve checked in at an airport to fly on a jumbo jet and they tell me my carry on is too heavy and so I have to put some things in my checked luggage. I say “but it’s going on the same plane !” 😳🤪
That's why you always fuel your truck up before you go to a shipper that way they can't overload you. I mean it also helps to know when you're going to a place like that beforehand.

I had a great friend who was a B-24 pilot during WW2. He got to fly his plane back to the states after the war. He said after he landed, he would never fly in an airplane again. And he never did.

Flying is actually the safest way to travel. I have only flown a few times, but each flight was totally uneventful. I have, however, been in several auto accidents, none my fault, including being put in the hospital at the age of eleven when a speeder hit me while I was riding my bicycle.
