    If the battery is dead, how are you going to be able to drive it?

    • @AutoAuctionRebuilds

      The generator / gas engine powers the inverter that powers the motors

    • @razissweet
      @razissweet 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Essentially the power the generator (“engine”) makes goes straight to the inverter and to the two drive motors on the front wheels and basically bypasses the battery all together.
      This isn’t exactly how it works but that’s a simple way to explain how it works.

    Keeper, that’s a beauty that I forgot existed at one time. Fix the battery issue, I think you are spot on with coolant and drive the heck out of it. FYI. The rims are directional rims designed to pull air through the brakes for cooling.

    I have a 2017 Volt and love the heck out of it. Yes that is a camera in the window. It works with the lane assist, collision alert, and adaptive cruise. Adaptive cruise also uses a radar set mounted behind the grill. It's easy to see on the Volt if it has adaptive cruise because the grill emblem is more flush on cars that have it. If it has adaptive cruise, what you called the collision avoidance setting is actually the following distance adjust. It's fairly innocuous when it's on until someone is in front of you moving slower than speed you set.

    If you want to a quick test on the traction battery, set your mode to "mountain" and drive the car for 15 minutes. This will charge the battery to about 1/3 its range. Turn the car off at that point, then back on, which will send the car back to "standard" mode, which will then run the car on battery first. If your battery is still operative, it will show how many battery miles you have immediately upon start up.

    Cadillac ELR owner here! Glad to hear that you love it! It's an amazing car for sure. The 2016s two options that were available to order was the performance package as you described in the video but also adaptive cruise control. Sadly, they didn't come standard (was like a $700 option when new). If you would've had it, the frontal collision distance button on the steering wheel would've been your cruise distance adjustment. Sadly, I don't believe that your car has ACC. I was researching on making a retrofit kit to add it in and it's possible to enable the software for it, but you'd need to swap out the front grille from an ELR that had ACC, get the ACC sensor, then splice into the bumper and engine harness to make it all work. Youd also need to flash a few modules in the car to make it all work. I was really close to trying to do the retrofit until I saw how expensive a new grille was. 😢. Anyways, I enjoyed the video, great content as always!

    Its considered a hybrid. Theres a black one for sale in Virginia that a dealer is asking 25k for and had been in a minor accident. Same mileage and year and just had some kind of work to fix the charging. You got a great deal, those rims are awesome.

    • @davidkane4300
      @davidkane4300 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      100% a hybrid, and by definition alone, a standard parallel hybrid, but with an asterisk. It shares the Voltec drivetrain with the Volt, which primarily operates in series hybrid mode (unlike most hybrids), but has a clutch in the transmission that can be engaged to directly connect the engine to the wheels through the planetary CVT (like most hybrids). So this is a three mode hybrid: (1) series hybrid most of the time, and always at low speeds, (2) parallel hybrid above certain speeds, and (3) gas only above certain speeds.
      Most hybrids (Prius, Maverick, etc.) operate in parallel hybrid or gas only at all speeds with a planetary CVT to blend the two together (modes 2 and 3 above). The Fisker Karma and i3 REx, like diesel-electric locomotives and Edison trucks, cannot mechanically link the engine and transmission, so they can only operate in series hybrid (mode 1 above).
      The true series hybrid Fisker Karma, i3 REx, and Edison trucks have the added benefit of a traction battery that diesel-electric locomotives do not have, so they (and the Volt/ELR) can operate in pure electric mode, which parallel hybrids can do as well. The i3 REx is different, though, since the tiny engine cannot power the traction motors on its own... It can only charge the battery, so if the battery goes bad, you're SOL (which is also true of most hybrids since they need the traction battery to start the engine, but I have a 300k mile Prius with a mostly bad battery... It has enough capacity to start the engine, but cannot take much of a charge and overheats, which the car then shuts it down, but the engine still runs... But it's slow af... I can out accelerate it on a bicycle and the top speed is about 50MPH without battery assist. GM put the clutch in their planetary CVT to overcome this issue, or Randy's ELR would be either non-driveable like the i3 REx, or drive terribly like my Prius).

    That pearl white I believe was a limited edition you bought it through some department store maybe sacs. The adaptive cruise control. You just hit the cruise button on the left-hand side of the steering wheel the circle with the arrow going up through it. Then to adjust the speed, you just move that whole button up or down. Or it you hold it up or down it decreases or increases by five mph. I had the 2014

I can’t remember the price but the payment was only a little less than my volt. I am kicking myself now for not buying the ELR. At the time, the Volt made more sense because it is a little more practical for my family but I could have shoved the kids in the back of the ELR. I love my Volt but the ELR looks fantastic.

    @AutoAuctionRebuilds : G'evening Randy 🤠 . In a nutshell this operates pretty much the same way a diesel locomotive engine engine does. What most people don't realize is the diesel engines in trains turn big ass generators which power giant electric motors that turn the wheels on the train and make it go. That Cadillac ELR uses a scaled-down simplified variant of the same type of system that makes it go 🙃 ..

    I've had a really soft spot for these since they were first introduced. First of all, the Volt drivetrain was brilliant. It was the best of GM since the EV1. Secondly, the Volt was kind-of a nerdy-looking car. Granted, I like it that way. The ELR is a Volt in an evening gown. These things are sooooo beautiful. The fact that it didn't sell well, which I think was partially because I believe they were about $20k more than a Volt but to me, its rarity makes it even more cool.
    Be careful messing with the high voltage batteries, Randy.
    This was definitely a great buy and a cool car. Congrats!

    I own a Volt and Toyota Hybrids... its not a CVT at all in any way..... , it has the same hybrid setup as toyota uses.. watch a tear down of a Toyota Hybrid transmission (very interesting) , The volt/ELR are what we have today with the Toyota Prius prime , rav4 Prime.. its a dual motor hybrid system and a larger battery than a typical "toyota hybrid" setup for electric only driving.. and yes the gas engine is directly driving the wheels.... but not the way you think it does. once you understand the tranmission/hybrid system it will all make sense. The trans is a power director. it takes rotational power from the electric motor and/or gas motor and directs it to ether drive the wheels or the generator motor by using the DC motors to control the power of the gas engine.... Its a brilliant design, and has no friction parts like clutches etc.. once you understand how it works you'll be mind blowen.. keep in mind DC motors are also generators and how you can lift a rear end of a truck up spin one wheel and how the differential counters your tire rotation on the other wheel and the drive shaft doesn't move. Now in your mind put the engine on that drive shaft and replace the tires with DC motors.

    It's a shame they were so expensive, because they're a really good looking car. Also too bad it didn't have the 2nd gen Volt drivetrain. I've got a 2017 Volt and it's been a fantastic car for me, but I just wish it had a coupe body like the ELR because it's a little cramped up front for a tall person.

    My sister bought a 2015 volt back in 2021 for $6800, one owner and 100k miles. Had the same service high charging warning, turns out the car had THREE miles left of warranty when she went to the dealership to get it checked out. They performed the coolant flush and reprogram free under the warranty!

    The drivetrain immediately makes me think of the Edison semi truck. Diesel electric, full electric drivetrain but has a big diesel generator as a range extender. Same also as diesel electric trains. This is just a smaller gas powered version of the same idea

    • @davidkane4300
      @davidkane4300 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not the same... The Edison is a true series hybrid (like a train). The ELR can operate as a parallel hybrid because there's a clutch that can mechanically link the engine to the CVT. The Edison trucks (and trains) do not have this.

    • @dravenweber4904
      @dravenweber4904 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @davidkane4300 I did not look into the drivetrain, though my understanding just from the video here was there was no standard cvt or direct connection capabilities from the engine to the wheels. Hence why it made me think of the Edison trucks. If there is a connection through a cvt then yes they are completely separate

    • @dravenweber4904
      @dravenweber4904 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @davidkane4300 according to cadillac, it is a true series hybrid, the engine does not connect to the driven wheels in any way other than through the generator and then to the electric motors.
      "The 4ET50 transmission is a fully
      automatic, front-wheel drive transaxle,
      variable-speed, electronic controlled
      transmission. The transmission contains
      two electric motor / generators that are
      utilized to:
      propel the vehicle
      generate / recapture energy
      start the internal combustion engine
      1.4L E
      The Cadillac ELR uses an internal
      combustion 1.4L engine. The engine does
      not directly propel the vehicle, but operates
      only to spin the drive motor / generator"

    I know the mic's have a tendency to amplify road noise, but it would be the road noise that would irritate me at the original msrp . . . looks heaps cooler than a Volt and what a buy !!

    For anyone confused by the way the engine in the car operates with the electric drive-train in the ELR. This is pulled directly from the Cadillac ELR emergency response guide:
    "The 4ET50 transmission is a fully
    automatic, front-wheel drive transaxle,
    variable-speed, electronic controlled
    transmission. The transmission contains
    two electric motor / generators that are

    I consider it an Electric Vehicle too with a Gas Generator.
    Dodge Ram plans to make something like this. With a 3.6L engine as the generator.

      The only thing is that there are so many failure points. Now we gotta worry about both maintaining the same type of engine in a truck now and the electric components.

    • @davidkane4300
      @davidkane4300 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not a true series hybrid... There's a clutch that *can* engage to directly mechanically link the engine to the CVT (and the wheels), which is a parallel hybrid. In normal operation (and always at low speeds), it does operate as a series hybrid, but since it can operate as a parallel hybrid, it's not a true series hybrid vehicle like an i3, Edison truck, or trains (none of those can operate as a parallel hybrid).
