    Fun fact- giant whale-eating predators like Livyatan and megalodon were likely killed off by ice-age-related climate change... but not directly.
    At the time they lived, many different filter-feeding whales existed, both large and small. These smaller baleen whales were probably their favoured prey, and formed the bulk of their diet. All whales need very high concentrations of fatty food such as krill or fish to survive, but small baleen whales had a different tactic to modern ones. The small whales didn't need as much food as big whales, but their small size means they had lower cruise speeds and higher drag, and so they probably fed in fairly local conditions without migrating far.
    When the ice ages hit, baleen whale food became much more seasonal and localised. This meant that, while they needed more food overall, the massive size of large baleen whales let them survive longer between feasts and travel far more efficiently than the small ones could. So the big whales could migrate across the planet to feed and breed (and indeed, started getting bigger to do so even better- it's why the blue whale is bigger than any extinct whale), while the smaller whales were trapped in places with food supplies that were too irregular to rely upon, and so died out.
    Without the small whales to eat, megalodon and Livyatan were left with a choice between small, fast whales and seals, and giant, formidable baleen whales. The former were too hard to catch for too little gain, while the latter had the sheer power to guard their vulnerable calves and protect themselves as adults- leaving the whale-hunters to starve. Later, modern mammal-hunting groups of killer whales developed a new, more modern strategy for hunting marine mammals via culture rather than evolution- they chase whales into exhaustion before attacking, letting them circumvent their size and power, and they can switch between ambush and pursuit to ensure they can reliably catch the safer small marine mammals as well.

  • @tsunamix0147
    @tsunamix0147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +259

    I like the realism this guy put into the Livyatan's eating habits. Fossil evidence suggests that while they did eat sharks, they did not eat the whole thing, and for a couple good reasons:
    1. It's too big
    2. They need to consume chunky flesh and meat
    Megalodon certainly was a significant meat supplier for these marine mammals, but it wasn't the outside that was appetizing; it was the inside. At the end of the animation, you can see the dying/dead megalodon slowly floating down to the seafloor, and you'll notice it has a good-sized hole from the attack; that hole is right around where the shark's vital organs are, including the liver.
    The internal organs of sharks provide lots of protein, fat, and other subsidiaries for their predators to benefit from, and this is why sharks are a prominent target of carnivorous marine mammals. Many modern-day marine mammals like Killer Whales tend to eat sharks themselves and do the same thing; bite a hole out of them and then eat what's inside. This way for whales to dine has been a practice since the days of Basilosaurus, and this method has carried on through multiple different species, including Livyatan.

    Increíble trabajo. Es sensacional. Siempre he pensado que Liviatan tenía una forma mucho más parecida a una orca que al cachalote. Era un gran depredador hábil y competente. No puede estar mejor realizado, lo único que me dejó extrañado fue que su aleta dorsal no la hiciesen gigantesca, asemejándolio aún más a la orca. Puede que haya Sido pariente del cachalote, pero era muy lejana su unión. Me encantó es una obra maestra!

    • @winnis5953

      No tiene nada que ver con la orca (son parientes sí, pero muy lejanos), la orca es un delfin (delphinidae) mientras que livyathan es un cachalote, pertenece a la misma familia que el cachalote actual y las ballenas dentadas de su tiempo los physeteroideos.

    I saw a documentary on both the Livyatan and the Megladon. The Ancient oceans were violent. Another ocean predator that lived in the same era as those 2 predators was the Brigophyseter. A predatory whale much like today's orcas also may have hunted in pods similar to modern day killer whales.

    I am lost with words and Blown Away. This was truly AMAZING!!!!! The camera angle at the first few seconds of the video was breathtaking. It was actually like being in the Water behind the Rocks while those Sharks swam by. It gave me some chills. And the animation of the wound on the shark was so realistic. And the music was perfect. And the sceneries were beautiful as well. This was very euphoric. I was so immersed in this film. I think that's about the best I can do to describe how I feel. I'm so blown away, it's hard to put feelings into words. I'm going to be watching this over and over and over again. Thank you for allowing me to dive into a fantasy. Your work is very appreciated.
