Shame on former Prime Minister Howard for doing nothing for Aboriginal people during his 11-year tenure, refusing to make an apology such as this, and even choosing not to attend this speech. Former Labor Prime Ministers Whitlam and Keating were great friends to Aboriginal people and it took another Labor Prime Minister in Mr Rudd to have the fortitude and integrity to make such a profound statement in Parliament. Seems that the LNP lack basic compassion for disadvantaged members of our society, not just Aboriginal people.

You look for historical injustice you will find everyone was once, based on today's moral standards, abused, used or simply ignored.

@@GoA7250 the stolen generations happened far more recently than children in Britain sweeping chimneys a few centuries ago. there are certainly other problematic things that have happened, but the stolen generations is a combination of so many things- being taken away from family, an attempted assimilation and wipe out of the Aboriginal Australian race, extreme cases of abuse and racism in the missions and on-going intergenerational trauma, as well as so much more that i won't go into. It's not the same as having child neglecment in the 1700's, because any remnant of that trauma is all but gone now, because there is no one alive anymore who lived through that time or who had close relatives who went through that. The stolen generations were happening in the 1950s, which is only 70 years ago. Even in the 1980's there were still children being taken away- even today. It's an on-going issue, with on-going trauma, and that is why it is so vital to adress it and reconcile, and why it takes priority over other issues. It's also pointless to argue the "every one has suffered" point in this situation- this is an issue brought on by past Australian Governments, directed at wiping out any sign of the Aboriginal Australian race, and is probably one of the worst things to happen under the Australian government, period, and therefor is worthy of every apology.
Learn the names of the tribes and find out why #ChiefWasatch adopted the name from a Frozen presumably European they had found in the snow and took home in that #FrozenState to their chief who called himself Wasatch in honor of the Frozen man. Perhaps prophetic of the future of Europeans who still today are living on #borrowedTime on #borrowedLands with #borrowedNames from native cultures... we can honor their #deadChiefs along with our own.
