I came out in 1979 as a teen lesbian and it was NOT accepted by most people then. Many teammates were homophobic and some were particularly mean. I was the only one in my high school that I knew of at the time. I was only 15. This was before Martina came out (1981) and before Billie Jean King confessed to having an affair with a woman (also 1981). I wish things could have been as easy as they are now because it was extremely difficult for me. I think of myself as someone who paved the way for for others to come out now, even though I am not famous by any means. I just wish sometimes that I had grown up in this era and not the one in which I did.

Karen, I'm sorry to hear that... Yeah, this era is better, because people started talking more about sexuality after the 90 tees and it wasn't a taboo anymore that there are different sexual orientations, and for people being more accepting. But this hasn't changed in a lot of parts of the world... And still in America, people are still quite conservative and close minded with this issues and avoid them or talk about them in the wrong way. And Trump isn't helping...
To be in a team and be not accepted by your teamates and feel judged feels like shit. I'm from the 1999 and I've also experience it. Probably not to the extreme that you did, but I got the idea.. I don't like to define myself, but I have felt attracted to people no matter the sex, so if someone asks me I usually say I'm bisexual. I was also around 15 or even younger when I realized that I could also find girls attractive, and I've never hidden my sexuality (but I also don't feel the need to express it to everyone). It became weird for me being in the changing rooms, feeling judged by some of my teamates and also the audience, parents... And also boys of other teams... So I wasn't prepared to face it and left soccer/football in europe (I'm from spain).
Thank you for sharing your experience, i connected with it a lot.

@Thomas McGill nop, but that people think like this, sadly yeah... Probably people like you, who are so simple minded to call someone "loser" for explaining their past experiences and having a hard time

Cool story Karen but sounds like BS, now a days its just trendy to say you're gay pretty sad you have to jump on the bandwagon just to get attention. The LGBTQMNOP community don't like it.

Well said my 5 year old niece doesn’t think it’s weird. When my daughter was 6 we had this conversation. It means when a woman loves a woman or a man loves a man. Love is a beautiful thing she told me that always stayed with her

Karen, thanks for coming out when you did. You held space and made it better for lesbians like Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird to be as free as they are now. Don't underestimate the work you and many ordinary women did to make more space for women and our love for other women. I urge you to continue, to keep making and affirming your woman loving space. There are many of us now. Yes! Yes!

The whole gender stereotype comes into play here. Men provide financially, men are strong etc, women nurture blah blah. Sport is typically masculine, ballet, feminine. And I think it is these stereotypes why women in sport are assumed gay and men who dance ballet are assumed gay, and why it is harder for men in sport to come out. We assume a man who does drag is gay but in actuality may be just a job for him. I maybe wrong in saying this but I think that male athletes think that coming out it would mean in their minds that they wont be respected as men.

That’s a great point, a valid point. It seems easier or more comfortable, or more of an easier transition, for pro-female athletes to come out and develop their careers. This makes me realize the importance of leaders who take the initiative.
All the best pro-male athletes I can think of are straight. I’m curious to see the first major pro-make athlete who comes out and is massively successful. I would be curious to see that one playing out.
By the way, please let me know if I’m wrong. There might be a male pro-athlete out there I’m completely ignorant about, who is gay and massively successful.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. "Coming out", why. Just like who you like. No one cares what you like to do in your sex life. That should stay private. If you feel you must "come out" you have issues. Just be who you are with no announcements.

    • @Mysterybabylon696
