  • Billy Strings first saw Neal Casal perform with Hard Working Americans, then soon after heard Circles Around the Sun (CATS) and became inspired by Neal's tastefully restrained playing style. He had an opportunity to jam with Neal at a festival and discussed recording with CATS, which unfortunately would never transpire. But when Billy came to PLYRZ Studio to record "All The Luck in The World," from Neal's 1996 album Rain, Wind and Speed, as the first single from Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, Circles Around the Sun was the backing band and something about it felt right. In this episode, Billy and Dave Schools discuss transmuting one's pain into something beautiful on stage, Richard Mink's airbrush artwork, and the importance of mental health care, particularly for performers who spend much of their lives on the road. Billy's new record, produced by Jonathan Wilson (also a contributor to Highway Butterfly) is out on September 21st via Rounder Records. Find out more at www.billystrin....

Falling in love with Billy, introduced me to this song. It is so evocative and sad. It’s the definition of how I feel my life with my family. I just never heard it out loud.

What an incredible tribute to an amazing musician. Mental health needs less stigma now. It's okay to hurt, it's good to get help. RIP Neal, you are missed.

Amazing musicians. All three of them. Love Billy Strings, Dave Schools, and Neal Casal. Love CATS, CRB, Phil Lesh and all the contributing work Neal Casal was involved in. It has opened so many directions to check out. Been at it for months and will continue for years. Thank you for being open, it helps me. I love these podcasts.
    Stray strong. RIP Neal Casal.
Billy Strings needs to get into Canada to play some Southern Ontario shows.

Thank you both SO much for being open about how y'all feel. It's more important these days than ever to know you're not alone. I really appreciate what you laid down here and hope maybe hearing your stories will help others who are in tight spots as well! Much love from Colorado.

Love that these two discussed the deep mental health issues that artists go through to become what they are and what they write or play. The toil of touring and the past that an artist experiences is usually the catalyst for the music they create and to openly share the truth and how Neal's life pulled all of these artists together!

I used think people with anxiety we're just being emo, wimps or whatever but when it hits home it is SO HARD! Breakups and breakups with kids are probably the #1 driver! I can only imagine what living on the road is like but I can tell it's hard for touring musicians. I seen JB on the street in Milwaukee and just said hi and let him on with his day rather than corner him and talk his ear off, the vibe just wasn't their, he was busy. I also had a chance to meet WSP by winning a sound check viewing and politely declined just because i could tell they were busy. Id like to meet these players I enjoy in a more chill organic way. These days I'm afraid to get into politics with musicians. Vince Herman has got very opinionated on politics and that's ok, I don't agree with him to the point that he wouldn't like me and it already has kinda dropped a fart in the room. I like that I have never really heard much from players like JB on their opinions. I just want to enjoy the music. This whole flu cure thing happening is a bummer. I have natural immunity and completely trust it on advice from trusted doctors and I might have to show a CV jabz card or a neg test and I refuse to do either for a Billy Strings show Nov 4th&5th. I have a refund request in to the venue and the ticket seller and they don't seem to care at all. As a life long live music fan I have a ton of anxiety over all this political/vaxx crap and it sucks!
I guess the only shows I can see is Eric Clapton and Van Morrison!? Who would have ever thought those two would be the counter culture in 2021!?!
