A big part of that is because the Broncos often earned the right to have the games at home with their regular season record, so they didn't play that many road playoff games. I'll disagree and say that they had plenty of heart in this game; defense played awesome, they controlled the flow of the game, and Gary Kubiak came in when called upon and performed well. Those Buffalo teams would usually blow teams out during that time when they visited there. Elway just had a poor game by his standards and Treadwell was always shaky, otherwise the Broncos would have moved on to the Super Bowl, and lose to Washington.

The bills had no business in the SuperBowl Denver should have won this game. Buffalo’s defense was also only ranked 19th in points allowed and they played a historically weak schedule. The redskins were probably laughing when they realized they had to play the bills in the SuperBowl. The bills were never a Super Bowl caliber team they just played in an inferior conference. Would have rather seen elway get blown out for the fourth time maybe he would have retired early and the broncos wouldn’t have beat the packers in 1997.
Dude, you can quit spamming anti-Buffalo comments.... The Bills actually had a good record against NFC teams (including notable wins against great NFC teams). They nearly won the 1990 Superbowl. Ultimately, I don't think Jim Kelly or Thurman Thomas had the brains or mental toughness to win the big one after that devastating 1990 superbowl loss.
You really must not watch much football? The majority of schedules turnout to be weak. One example would be Tom Brady playing in a “historically “ bad division for twenty years and only playing 2-3 tough opponents a year. Some divisions might have three 10+ win teams due to other divisions simply being terrible. The only team who had a legit chance of beating the 1991 Redskins was the San Francisco 49ers who won their last six games and didn’t even make the playoffs with 10 wins. The 1991 Redskins faced three easy opponents in their Super Bowl run. The Falcons, Lions and Bills who all three franchises still haven’t won jack sh1t. As far as John Elway goes, John was always going to get at least one and thankfully it was vs turd face choker Brett Favre. Hahaha!

I always looked at Dan Marino as the biggest complainer, as he’d do it right there on the field. And the Redskins played just as an easy post season as the Bills too. The Falcons and Lions. Haha! C’mon man. The only reason Buffalo lost the Super Bowls was their lines on both sides of the ball sucked. Same GM Bill Polian went to Indy and built that team up and he had eerily the same results due to small line play before getting a gimmick Super Bowl win vs the Bears. I’m pleased Elway didn’t win this game, he’d of lost another Super Bowl due to not having a team. John was the team. John got two rings later on in his career when he had a team and Kelly and Marino got zero.
This would be their second super bowl appearance. They would play against the Redskins in that year’s super bowl. Denver really should have won this game. I couldn’t believe Treadwell missed those field goals and Elway got hurt. It was like their 93 super bowl when Reich came back to beat the Oilers
During that era, we would always debate Montana vs Marino as best QB(I personally think Marino was better), with Elway a clear notch below- and a big factor was as you say: His performance in big games ....and then when he got the 2 rings at the end of his career, people started rating him with those 2 - and I disagreed: The BRONCOS became a team that could win a Super Bowl, and give Elway credit for winning them, but dont think that raised him into the Marino Montana league- still too many sub par playoff performances ( and I realize the Broncos were underdogs in some of those- but Elway HIMSELF was sub par in some, and bad in others... I also feel Peyton Manning was a bit overrated for the same reason)
@@MaximusWolfe I thought Marino was ok OVERALL in his OWN PERSONAL playoff performances , and would put more of the blame on the rest of the teams performance or lack of enough talent for their playoff losses (and for Marino not having a ring) Marino does have some poor performances : *His play in SB 19 was blah, but that's against a 49er team that had as good an offense as Miami and a clearly better defense. *Championship game the next year against New England. * Championship game against Buffalo at home in 1992(?)- but I believe overall, his performance in the playoffs didnt cause me to drop his rating. (Should be noted that Montana had several bad playoff performances as well: 49-3 loss to the Giants -but of course that's against 1 of the top 10 defenses ever...a bad game when upset by the Vikings - Montana was benched in that one...Those are 2 that come to mind, with a few others I could list)
Overrated? John Elway was the primary reason his teams got to the Super Bowl three times in four seasons. And he did it without a wealth of talent at the skill positions, and with a coach who built the offense around a non-existent running game. He finished his career second in career passing yards and first in career wins. Finished with the second most career playoffs victories. Finished his career with back-to-back Super Bowl wins, including Super Bowl MVP in his final game. Yeah, that's pretty good.

Yeah sucked when they went to Cleveland in the 1986-87 conference game and drove 98 yards to eventually tie and win at Cleveland
You must have missed the drive
@@mattieaflo and outside of that game, when did they go on the road and win a big game? GOPMAN is right. The 80's-early 90's Broncos were a completely different team at home than on the road. Love the Broncos to death, but facts are facts.
Well now you’re changing your original statement. I could say the same things about 80s to 90s 49ers
Broncos should have won this game but they blew it
Well SB 26 would have been SB 22 all over again if the Broncos won.
Another game when the best team didn't win.
What a game by elway 7 points all game
What if Kubiak started?
Jim Kelly beats John Elway in this one.
Ironic how both of these teams hate the Chiefs & Patriots.
I was wondering who the color commentator was who kept speaking too much and wasnt very good...and then I realized that it was Bill Walsh! Well, cant change my mind just because it's a great coach- as a color man, he spoke too much and wasnt very good!
He was a big drop-off from Merlin Olsen. Its been fairly commonly acknowledged that Walsh wasn't very good in this capacity. Ironically, neither was Joe Montana or Ronnie Lott in the studio. Whatever it was they did on the field that led to the dynasty with the 49ers, it didn't translate in TV at all.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 👍
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Don't forget Brent Jones, he sucked too.
Montana & Lott were atrocious. Walsh wasn't that bad.
We had their # that day!if ELWAY would of played all game,a great game plan on the road against a great defense, Dan Reeves was a hall of fame coach and had a winning game plan for that Buffalo game!but I guess it didn't matter without ELWAY!the super bowl was going to be another loss to the NFC team, but you never know Denver might of won that Superbowl!!!,as we all know Buffalo couldn't! JUST SAYIN, LATER!!!😆,DAN REEVES HALL OF FAMER, HE'LL GET IT ONE DAY!JUST WISHED IT WAS BEFORE HE PASSED!😭
He almost ruined Elway’s career. No way he deserves to be in Hall of Fame.
@@rkid727 I have a different opinion of Dan Reeves, any player, asst.Coach,or Head Coach that participates in 9 yes 9 Super Bowls is worthy of the Hall of Fame,4 as a Head Coach,3 as an asst. Coach, and 2 as a player, although he only won two one as a player in 72" and one as an asst. Coach in 77',anybody involved in pro ball would be proud and worthy to have participated in 9 Bowls,he didn't almost ruin Elways career,he just was a run first old school coach and didn't let Elway throw as much as Elway or us fans thought he should, but it dont take away from his accomplishments in the NFL!HE IS HALL OF FAME WORTHY!led 2 different teams to the Bowl as a Head Coach and played on a team that went 2 times back to back, not many coaches can say that if any!!! JUST SAYIN!!!🤔
@@anthonygomez2267 respect your opinion. Grew up in Dallas so know all about Reeves and his history as a player and a coach. He was never a great player. A good player at times. Solid coach. Not great. When I think of the HOF, I think innovative or a champion. He was neither in my opinion. Deserves to be in the Broncos Ring maybe but not NFL HOF. Had Cowher not gotten a ring, I’d put him in the same category. Honestly don’t believe he deserves entry over Shanny, but so be it. If Broncos don’t trade for Elway, Reeves may not have lasted 4 years as a HC. Elway made Reeves look good more than Reeves helped Elway. Again, not saying he wasn’t good. He was. Just not great and great gets you in. At least it used to.
It should have been the oilers in this game.
1:14:00
If Denver's FG kicker didn't retire, he should have. He lost the game.
the redskins musta laughed after watching this.
how does Denver convert the onside kick, and then turn the ball over….that is terrible…. all they needed to do was squeeze that ball on a few short plays to at least get the tying FG….wow 🤦🏻♂️
While pissed that the Broncos didn't win this game that they absolutely could have, I remember being relieved that the Bills could go face that 49ers buzz saw in the Super Bowl and Denver could be spared the embarrasement.
Um the 49ers didn't make the super bowl that year. It was Washington...........
Treadwell,.YUCK
That fucking SOB should've been cut on the spot when he missed the 37 yard field goal. What an absolute loser. You think Karlis, Elam, Prater or any other Denver kicker would've missed all those rather easy kicks? HELL NO. This guy was a disgrace beyond belief.
@@GOPMAN71 See Super Bowl 21 for your answer on Karlis
2:09:50 get that f*ckin camera outta here!🤣
The Bills did not beat the Broncos the Broncos beat them selves
Cool story
At least it want sewell's entire fault the broncos lost
Sewell is one reason they’re even in the game. It’s Treadwells fault they lost.
Hahaha!
@@ryanjacobson2508The 90s Bills players are straight up jack asses. They’d party the night before games and they were fragile minded in the biggest game. Daryl Talley was drinking and got into a bar fight with a few other Bills players in Pasadena the night before Super Bowl XXVII. Thurman Thomas quit in Super Bowl XXVIII after he fumbled the ball and game away. Thurman Thomas couldn’t find his helmet at the start of Super Bowl XXVI. Cornelius Bennett assualted a 17 year old girl in 1992. Heard Jim Kelly was a big time womanizer pre marriage. These dudes never took the Super Bowl games seriously whatsoever. Marv Levy is a hack who should’ve been canned after this terribly coached game. Marv has no business being in the NFL HOF. The 90s Bills crowing moment was their comeback win with their backup QB Frank Reich vs the Oilers when the Oilers quit playing. That’s it. The current Bills have a loser HC Sean McDermott who chokes playoff games away like Marv Levy choked Super Bowls away. The Buffalo Bills are the biggest chokers in the history of the NFL.
@@BuffaloWyoming Buffalo went 13-3 against a weak schedule they played only four teams with a winning record all season Washington went 14-2 against a schedule that featured 10 teams that finished 500 or better the redskins two losses were by a combined five points. Lol and the bills beat Steve DeBerg, and a hobbled elway who later Gary kubiack came in for him and they still almost lost lmao. The bills were a joke. That idiot Kelly was always blaming his teammates ignoring the fact that he was garbage in the postseason. Buffalo was a laughing stock of the 90s we tuned in because he loved seeing them get embarrassed every year. All the smart gamblers were laughing all the way to the bank betting on the nfc every year. Haha.
@@keyshawnbess572 That’s every NFL schedule though. It’s how it works. Washington’s schedule looked harder just due to their competive division. Plenty of cupcake wins on both schedules. I personally don’t like Buffalo or Jim Kelly. Jim Kelly complaining though was from 1989 and he had a right to, his line was trash.
Little did they know they would end up losing the 1st of 4 straight Super Bowls
To reach 4 straight SB is quite an extraordinary feat. I doubt it will ever be matched. These bills teams were awesome!
This would be their second super bowl appearance. They would play against the Redskins in that year’s super bowl. Denver really should have won this game. I couldn’t believe Treadwell missed those field goals and Elway got hurt. It was like their 93 super bowl when Reich came back to beat the Oilers
Little did your parents know you'd be so dumb.
Dick Enberg was great but Bill Walsh never shuts up.
Overrated Elway again comes up lame in a big game.
@@irar4665
By that metric Marino is also unspectacular. In big games he was more than not quite pedestrian. Montana is way above them both.
@@MaximusWolfe
I thought Marino was ok OVERALL in his OWN PERSONAL playoff performances , and would put more of the blame on the rest of the teams performance or lack of enough talent for their playoff losses
(and for Marino not having a ring)
Marino does have some poor performances : *His play in SB 19 was blah, but that's against a 49er team that had as good an offense as Miami and a clearly better defense.
@@irar4665 Well..all I know is in his final game, he walked off of the field in SB XXXIII as not only repeat champion...but MVP of the game.
