July 24, 2011 was a significant day in Japanese television history because television stations across Japan shut off their analog signals that day. Initially the signals were to shut off at noon but technically problems that were encountered during a July 2010 test shutdown caused them to shut off at midnight. Despite this the networks chose to end regular programming on the analog signal at noon and this caused blue information screens to be shown for nearly twelve hours. Due to damages sustained in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures as a result of the March 2011 earthquake analog transmissions ceased in those areas on March 31, 2012.
