I love how you took him to a quiet aisle to work on off leash work. Me and my pup (not a service dog) go out and practice off leash work at a train station near our house. I personally love doing off leash work and being able to trust a dog near completely when they don’t have a leash attached. Do you feel the same way?
hi hi!! good to see you in the comments again! That's great that you train off leash! It's such a great way to build a relationship with your pup! I do feel the same way! There's somehow a stronger connection off leash!
@@AstroFromTheBlue yes. There is a greater bond when the dog is off leash. And less stress on me also, for some odd reason. It feels more free and natural. And it is super helpful with teaching her off leash heel and recall training also. Plus longer down stays.
@@AstroFromTheBlue it's been months since I see Astro's progress and I must say he has gotten so good! He now has a better heel and even did some check ins
I love your "practice makes improvement" comment. I wish more of the Australian assistance dog community would embrace this. Perfection is so unrealistic and mistakes happen. I've also trained both my border collies "where's the car?" for the exact reasons you mention at the end of your video 😅
Service dogs are not robots and it’s OK to repeat commands. True words have never been spoken. Astro did really good ignoring the kids and following you when he was off leash. You could teach him to find your car I have a Guide Dog and she can target specific things including cars if we do it enough. It might take you longer if he isn’t familiar with the concept of targeting in general but I would say start by bringing him right up to the driver side door of your car, or whichever side of the car you want him to go to, tell him to touch and when his nose is on the handle give him whatever high value reward you want. Do that five or six times standing up right by it then back up a few steps and your hand forward toward the car if he puts his nose on the handle again give him the reward if he doesn’t go back to standing right in front of it do that until he goes to the car from a few steps away without your hand moving forward then add the word car or whatever you want for him to associate with finding it. At that point I would say you could move to maybe the end of your driveway and have them go to it then maybe start from a few houses down then next time you’re somewhere in a parking lot do the same thing starting from just in front of a car and moving backwards
Astro was the best boy!! Getting a little distracted is okay because he's learning and at least he stays with you which is what you want. It's perfectly fine for him to look, he's a dog it's what they do. The around command will get better in public it was just a very highly distracting environment that day. And yes teaching him to block behind you can come in handy if you get anxious about people being behind you. My friend's service dog will stand behind her in a block in public because my friend gets PTSD from people being behind her. Since my friend's dog is a Husky she has also taught her to do a low howl at people when they get overly too close for comfort because it startles them enough to make them back off. Astro did an amazing job! And you are doing an amazing job as his handler/trainer!!!
Its so nice to see the improvement each vid, makes me motivated to train my poodle!
awww thank you!! i’m glad it gives you motivation!! good luck with your training!
His vest is adorable! Also have to commend you on taking him to a quiet aisle for off leash work.
Astro did amazing!! It’s a good thing you took him in on a day where the store wasn’t super busy! Makes it easier for him 😅
Suki and I went his third time ever right before thanksgiving and it was PACKED!! Costco is a great place to practice so many desensitizing trainings! Especially with their indoor freezers and freezer doors!
You guys have made so many improvement!! You both are amazing! Keep it up!! ^^
hi hi!! Glad to see you in the comments again! Thank ya for your encouraging comment! It was really fun training at costco! Good luck with your training!!
I had to wash my Sd to reactivity so this helps me not be so sad because I love seeing Astro and his progress he has made and I love the thing you said at the end I set so high expectations for my dog when I was first started training him and he didn’t meet my expectations i got frustrated when he didn’t meet it but threw the years of training him I realized he is never going to meet my expectations because he isn’t perfect he makes mistakes
I love watching your videos, and seeing your dog grow. Your a really good trainer 😊
This makes me feel so much better about my service dog in training! I’m always self conscious about how she’s not perfect and because she’s part Aussie she holds her ears back like that and I always worry that means shes anxious because I’m used to dogs with ears that fall straight down
loved the voice overs you did😄you are doing such a great job at training Astro, as always!
if only i could do some off leash walks with my dogs, but she is so stubborn and very easily distracted😂i've already tried a couple of time in my private road (that binds me with my aunt and cousin's house) but one time she literally ran to the neighbor's property, so i think we will not try it anymore lol but that's okay, safety first
too much talking 🤣enjoyed the video as always, Astro is so so cute i want an aussie more and more😍🤩
His ears are so floppy cute ❤ my girl can have a very hard time at the pet aisle and I can't blame her 😂
Hahah yes his floppy ears are too cute! Hehehe 🥰🥰
You two are doing great. Kaya's in her pre-teens now and she gets barky-bitey zoomies all the time which is a struggle but i love her so much. I'm trying to focus on building her confidence and knowledge rather than rushing into sd skills 💛
astro and you are attacking us with the cutest duo ever!!
I love your videos so much the quality and your guys' personality is the best. I also have an owner-trained service dog and your vids helped me a lot.
Aww thank you! I really appreciate that, it made my day ❤️☺️
So awesome to see the progress both of you have made great job!!
awww thank you! glad to see you in the comments again!!
Ur dog is so calm and looks so unbothered, working to get here with my dog in public ❤❤
awww thank you!! hehe it took a lot of time and energy!’ good luck with your training!! 🥰
Astro did amazing! I love every video from you! keep up the amazing training with astro!
awww thanks for your support! much appreciated! 🥰
You actually can train him to find your car! I don't know how, but I know that it has been done. Maybe you can start with training him to take you to exits/ the door. It is a Find command. Some people train their SDs to find their Mom, or the person they are with when they are out, in case they need help. The exit command is for leading you to the nearest exit for when you are too overwhelmed in a situation. You might be able to find something on TH-cam. I hope that this helps. :)
That's so cool how people can train their dogs to find their cars. Astro doesn't have the greatest sense of smell so i don't know how it'll work! 😂 I'll definitely look into it though!
Congratulations on this vid, you and astro are awesome, i am getting great tips for training my SD my boy is 7 months old and we have just returned from public access training, your comment they are not robots is so true. We did about 20 mins outside a busy store and coffee shop. My lad did fantastic , 😊 proud dog mum here. How old was astro when you started SD training and how old is he now? ❤ from uk
Aww thank you!! We started when astro was around 6 months old, so just around your pups age!! They’re dogs and can make mistakes!! Thanks for sharing and good luck with your training!! 🥰🥰
Great job to both of you! Curious where you bought the treat pouch? I’ve been searching for one with a larger opening.
not me finding this after doing the EXACT same thing with my service dog AT COSTCO😭 also whatre you using to record, and where is it? I always prop my phone on the ground but it isnt very effective. would love insight. 5:06 got me because my sd does this sometimes and i always feel like a clown, but its always nice remembering that service dogs arent perfect and its not their fauly
I really want to get a service animal for minor physical things and larger psychiatric things (PTSD, anxiety, really hyper aware in public places, etc) but they are so expensive :(. Trying to find a nonprofit for kids with those things. +Domestic abuse/trauma sort of thing :/
How did you teach the shaking leg alert? I’ve tried but 1. She doesn’t understand she has to touch my leg with her nose so I’ve just been making her put her head on my leg 2. She’s not linking the two things together, any tips? My dog isn’t an assistance dog but I often get nervous in busy places so when I have her with me I think it would be useful for her to know what to do, thank you, love your videos!
I know I’m not the creator but I have trained my own dog as well as many others to do this task! I would start off by teaching your dog a touch command. This can be used with your hand to teach. you can hold a treat in your hand and wrap your hand around it, then when your dog touches their nose to your hand, say “touch” and reward. Do this until consistent without treats. Practice touching places like your knee and elbow as well, so he knows it’s not limited to your hand. Then, integrate leg shaking. Shake your leg, and after about two seconds tell him touch and point at your knee. This may take a few tries. After that, it’s all consistency and repetition. You can slowly weed out the verbal command when he connects the two. Hope this helps!
how did you teach astro the leg shake command? and astro did amazing this time!!
When did you start Astro's service dog training?
I'm curious because he's doing such an amazing job.
hii!! i’m not sure if you watched our Q&A, but we started when he was 9 months old!! 🥰🥰 thanks for your support!!
@@AstroFromTheBlue oh okay, I must have missed it.
Thank you! And keep up the great work.
Can I ask what type of dog he is? He is very beautiful:) also I love that your sharing service animal awareness.
And I am also glad you have him:)
One of my service dog's tasks is actually to find the car
wow that’s amazing!! idk where to start with that!!☺️
@@AstroFromTheBlue you will need a helper to call him to the car after you give him the command to find it then start increasing the distance
Hey I love your videos!! Just curious but where did you get your treat pouch and what's it called or brand? ❤
Hii, let me get back to you!! I’m honestly blanking rn… 😂😂
Hey there! I saw in your video that you were having trouble with your SD circling you. You mentioned something about him not liking things near his face? I got me to thinking, especially when I noticed that the coat you were wearing almost brushed his face a couple of times when you were asking him to circle you. Is it possible that was the reason why he was having trouble? Because if you watch the video, you might notice that the bottom edge of your coat is really close to his face as you are trying to have him circle you. I'm probably way off base, but it's just what I was thinking. I don't know if it helps you, but I thought I would mention it.
this looks like my costco! is it in wa? if so i hope to run into you! also astro is such a good boy
!! Hi hi, no it’s not in wa! Heheh I no longer go to that Costco but it was in CT
@@AstroFromTheBlue ah no worries just looked like the costco i go to. i mean- all costcos do kinda look the same
I hope you don’t mind me asking I’m training my husky mix for psychiatric! My question is what is the clicker for and do you have training advice?
Your question will be added to our Q&A this week! 🥰
My brother has an Aussie. She is 3yo, but hasn't been trained at all because my brother is lazy. He needs to part ways with her because his kids have allergies so she's gonna come live with me and my BF. I am very stressed about training her because she has 3 years old of bad habits ingraned in her. Do you have any tips ? How should I approach the situation ? I am not lazy, I will get her exercise in and game and obediance and all, but she'll be my first dog, so open to any tips and suggestions... You're doing such an amazing job with Astro. Anyways, thank you :)
Hii thanks for sharing! I don’t think you’re lazy at all, it’s great that you’re thinking about getting her exercise and obedience in! I recommend building a relationship with her through engagement and focus training!! Thanks for supporting our channel!! ❤️
What's the brand of the green treat pouch?
i believe it’s called voila! 🥰
First!
why do you need the dog with you?
I made a new video on why I need him. Please check it out to find out more ❤️❤️
Someone wanted to buy astro off you?
Your doing greatbon training but Be careful in stores because they are not required to let dogs that are "in training" into the location. For protections to be enforceable the dog needs to already be trained.
ADA requires service dogs be leashed unless "the disability prevents using these devices" or using them would "interfere with safe and effecrive performance of duties" basicall if you dog can do it's job leashed it must be leashed when working. Also most places also have leash laws; so, off leash training shouldn't really happen in public spaces. It not only protects you but protects the businesses from liability and also prevents those of us that use service dogs from additional scrutiny because of bad handlers/phony service dogs.
For others out there, the same is true about putting service dogs in carts particularly in grocery stores. Because of food items being in carts. ADA has specific requirements for behavior including to be leased walking next to handler on loose leash unless it is specific to their job. For instance mine needs to pull me so walks in front with me giving verbal locational commands. The tight leash and not at my side is specific to her job.
What a Joke … I’ve trained dogs who do all that WITHOUT treats… my current Bouv will do all this without treats at 7 months old….
Hi! Thanks for sharing, thats amazing that your dog can complete tasks without treats! :)
Stupid to have to carry around treats to get a dog to obey…. How about training without treats or shock collars
!! Astro loves his treats and I love to reward him for his amazing behavior. We don't use shock collars :)
