    Back in the day this woman basically came out of nowhere with a record full of awesome songs and zero fucks to give for what the recording industry thought about what a female pop artist should be. It was a game changer and certainly very influential for young girls, and even young boys like myself at the time. It certainly made me rethink a lot of shit and reconsider my assumptions about women and my relationship with them.

    • @Micegift
      @Micegift 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your definitely not wrong there as here in the U.K & Europe, the music scene was going through a bit of a transition period due to the charts having been dominated by boy bands for the previous 6 years or so by bands such as Take That, who had broke up for what was to be a 10 year break and the audience they had were growing into their late teens/early 20’s. If you weren’t into Brit pop like Oasis, Pulp or Blur, you were kind of a bit lost. Then as you say, slap bang in the middle of 1996 when everyone was dancing to The Macarena, Alanis burst on to the scene out of nowhere with ‘Ironic’ and the world made sense again for a lot of people.

Listen to the whole Jagged Little Pill album. Not a bad song. Keep listening at the end of the album. There’s a great ‘hidden’ song after about a minute or two (can’t remember exactly how long) of silence. Several artists used to do that back in the day. Watch comedian Ed Byrne roast this song, it's an awesome bit of comedy.
      He disects the song to pieces, indeed starting the routine by pointing out the only ironic thing about this song is that it's written by someone who doesn't know what irony is.

      She admitted to not really vetting what was irony and what wasn't when writing the lyrics, but then felt vindicated when someone pointed out to her that the fact that a song named Ironic not containing irony was the true irony. Life has a funny way of helping you out.

    Alanis is brilliant. Her songwriting and that huge expansive voice that can sound so sweet like a sitar then soar like an electric guitar. Interesting you were caught off guard by the sudden shift from quiet to loud in this song. Her sound was a fusion of pop, folk and grunge rock and one of the key elements of grunge was the structure of soft and melodic on the verses, loud and rough on the chorus. It’s most clearly, and more intensely, displayed in the incredible music of Nirvana.

    My favorite song off of "Jagged Little Pill". Her song off of the same album titled "You Oughta Know" was controversial at the time and they were not going to let her perform it at the m1996 Grammys due to implicit content. She did perform it with an orchestra and it sounded amazing. YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT. She won album of the year. For a joke compare this to her earlier album "Alanis" and the song "Too hot".
