8 years, I have been living. First 2 to 3 years were nice. I loved the life here until I learned German And started noticing how mean people around me are. And day by day it gets worse it seems. I see more hatred in people's eyes. As if they would have killed me if they could get away with it without consequences. I keep telling everyone is not the same. I keep convincing myself. I have started to work on my plan to live this country and start a new life in my home country.
When you learn the language, it's a different world, isn't it? Portugal was the worst experience of my life. I hope you are happy back in your home country.

At least you're passable as White. I'm Indian-Canadian and my 1 year in Berlin was awful. My mental health was totally wrecked and couldn't deal with the open and brazen hate anymore. Left right after one year and told my employer to transfer me back to Toronto. It was that bad
Actually newcomer Desis soaked with white worship mentality, help perpetuate racism. Quora, TH-cam, Facebook comments from newcomer Desis full of first world sugar rush, are full of teary eyed effusive comments like how their colleague says Hello and Thank You, how they got "accepted" despite being brown, and how an old German lady gave them direction.
There is no racism in Germany..... Germans are very friendly people....this statement was made by a little Austrian man with a funny moustache. He failed in Arts school.
I'm a portuguese guy living in germany for 3 years now and I've been facing xenophobia since then. It seems that even being a european, I'll still be seen as an outsider
They´re so backwards...they live in a Bubble! I have no interest in visiting this country. They haven´t learned about their disgraceful past? where million of people were brutally killed for being foreigners, or of a different ethnic background. They are full of hate, the´ve got no hearts and souls.
Where, big city? And who was it? When your boss or HR that rejected you then no wonder, but ,,everymen‘ are not bad, lot of them are so honest, friendly, loyal…
I'm Australian but my parents are Fijian. I've never experienced such open and foul racism until my Europe study abroad particularly Germany, Austria and Denmark. I had waiters at restaurants completely ignore me but listen attentively to my White friends, I had a group of teenagers make Monkey noises at me, I had an entitled old lady in Vienna demand I move seats on the tram because she didn't want a foreigner sitting in "her seat". Australia has a racist reputation but I experienced more racism in my Europe study abroad than my entire life back home. I'll also note that unfortunately I also experienced racism/unpleasantness from Turks/Middle Eastern people in Germany.
Same! Of all the ethnic groups of immigrants living in Germany, those stood out to me as rude or hostile. Turkish people in particular. I used to live in a predominantly Turkish neighborhood.
20+ years living in Germany. I was mostly taken aback by the unwarranted and deliberate meanness and spite I’ve experienced with a lot of people. It was mostly from Germans, but also from people of other ethnic groups.
My mother is German and often had comments and dirty looks when she spoke English with me in Germany as a child. The fun moments were when people made rude comments and she turn and informed them of their mistake in German when they were convinced she wouldn't understand.
We lived for about 3 decades in Germany and in my experience the most German are racist. We also work in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Polen and never experienced the kind of hate as in Germany. Now living for 4 years in Czech Republic and in all these for years do not experience any kind of racism.
The man with a funny moustache brain washed innocent Germans otherwise Germans are kind hearted people. They never support racism even though they accidentally practice it from time to time. If a snake bites you it's entirely your fault. You can't expect a snake to behave like a pet animal.
I had really bad experiences in Germany. I'd not live there again. They tend to be very very arrogant and like with a lot of hate inside. Two racist attacks and micro aggressions. I find that very hard to live with.
As a Canadian of colour living in Germany, I was a bit skeptical of this and clicked on this video with trepidation. I experience racism here far more often than I care to admit, far, far more than I did in all my years growing up in Canada. I always get a bit nervous when people who are white passing talk about racism, but I appreciate your point of view and hearing about your experiences. Your first story about the little girl is going to grow up to be very disappointed to find out English is a far more dominant language worldwide than German 🤣 if she remains a monolingual German speaker, she'll only be able to live in small Bavarian villages and her employment opportunities might actually be limited. The old man story you told is a very typical story in Germany. So many racists like that here. And worse. I had to experience this just yesterday in fact. We have to remember that the roots of Nazism and other such abhorrent ideologies haven't fully been taken out in German society. Just like in the US, right wing white supremacist terrorism is a huge danger and the biggest national security risk here, bigger than Islamic terrorism (and the two are ultimately way more similar than most people think anyway!), yet there are far more resources expended on Islamic terrorism here, while nazis are allowed to fester and organize under the radar. Some studies seem to indicate that a good third of white Germans (if not more) harbour many tenets of nazi ideology in their hearts and would absolutely be fine with the country moving in a more fascist direction. In all democracies, people need to be on guard.
Moldovan descendant born in germany here: The biggest part of xenophobia is towards arabs and slavs. The germans always get veeeery self conscious with afro american looking people. African looking? Racism shows again hard. (Obviously only noticed it as i am slav) But to share a little story myself: my family came to germany 1946 over austria fleeing from the soviets. My grandmother spoke 6 languages fluently and both got denied her teacher's degree she made under KuK regulations because she is not "from here" and joining the "bund der vertriebenen" (some organisation working for the interests of displaced) denied entry on the basis she was not german enough and a economic refugee (the soviets would have killed my family for being kulaks. At least the nazis could be bribed enough to spare us and our workers) Fast forward to me in a job interview i got asked about my unusual last name and mention the romanic background and 3 min later the interview was over. They didn't even write me to tell me i didn't get the job. In my experience the most aggressive xenophobia you'll have in major cities and outside bavaria. Bavarians are... Well special. They live my the saying "ignorance is a bliss" and have a pretty akward way of saying stuff. My favorite example for their xenophobia "lieber ein neger in lederhosen als einen preußen am stammtisch" (roughly translated: we prefer a negro in lederhosen/folk dress rather than a prussian sitting at the locals table) It sounds very rude but their intention is only to highlight how hated the prussians are. They consider it a lot more realistic to integrate an african into their culture than accepting a prussian. In general bavarians do not even like themselves that much (lower bavaria vs higher bavaria. Old bavaria vs frankonia and svabia. Bavaria vs munich. Bavaria vs austrians. It has to be noted Bavarians and austrians will stop their feud any time vs saxons/prussians. Lot of text but what is the conclusion? Don't bother with germans. If you do not feel okay here leave. It won't get better. I for sure will do asap after completing my master's degree. P.S. arab/islamistic crimes are currently outweighing right wing crimes in numbers and severity and while the verfassungsschutz is putting a blind eye on the right wing crimes as always police is turning one towards the religious ones on the basis of being called racists if they start working against it. Double edged sword and blunt on both sides.
@@elijah9253 But after you have died, some migrant can take your place, can't he ? The germans don't have enough children, so actually there is no other option. The germans say themselve "We don't want to reproduce" as their own free will.
I think they discriminate people who were not born in Germany / didn 't grow up in the country because they immediately assume that you are not "as well educated" as they or you are not able to follow a conversation due to the language or lack of knowledge. When I was living there, people didnt even want to start a conversation with me, because they thought I would not understand their level of erudition😂

Most were loving it, foreign people and Germans were asking me for photos. But when I'm wearing jeans and shirt nobody cares 🤣
Germany might not be more racist than other countries, but it does have a terribly violent history directly related to racism and anti-Semitism. Unfortunately, one sees an alarming rise of all these tendencies in Germany today.

I am an Asian Canadian and a former tenant as an international student in Freiburg last academic year. After a while, I finally settled in Frankfurt for the remaining three months for my thesis. During my stay, the couple called Nives and Phillp have targeted me for not complying with their cleaning instructions written in German, knowing that I do not read German and the consequence of not being transparent with information. Her writing was clear but could not be read on Google Translate. I had to invite a trusted roommate to the library and helped me to translate on her personal time. I felt so grateful to her. One day, Nives threw her temper at me because I stepped on egg whites that were dropped on the ground. I thought it was water drops because I just washed my hands. Later when I promised to mop the floors, her attitude was so condescending stating that I need to be supervised by her. We are equals, and there is no chance for her to dictate how others live according to her own personal preference. I could not accept that. Before I left for exchange to China, I wrote a letter in traditional Chinese character outlining how wrong and targeted I felt to them and dropped it in their mailbox. They need to know how reading unfamiliar scripts in another language feels like. I also have to deal with my parents living in Frankfurt. My father cheated on my mother, who has severe depression and anxiety, and had an illegitimate child also living with his mother in Frankfurt. During my stay, I had to listen to their argument until 4:00 am. Back when SWFR wrote to me, I felt very much targeted and lonely because of what they have done. I would invite you to imagine yourself being scolded for rules made up by others that you did not understand. I am, however, thankful for Johanna and Til, who were also roommates of mine. Recently, when I reconnected with the trusted roommate, she stated that Nives and Phillip got into a fight with the new Italian roommate. The couple remain unaccommodating. She also quoted that Nives expressed dislike to Italian culture and his Italian music. Whenever they played music in the kitchen, it was okay. However, when I cooked Mapo Tofu as the only homesick relief on Sunday, Nives complained about the smell and opened up the window. Though it was logical, her movement made me really uncomfortable because she shamed my culture. Many children of immigrants reported being traumatized because others complained about their food, which applied to me. As an MA student, I know how well Germany learned from this mentality back in history, and I think having such roommates is both toxic and dangerous. Broken down, I am deeply saddened by how the new Italian roommate has to go through this in a country so much closer to him than where I came from. That reminded me of my past experience, which mentally tormented me during my stay in Freiburg. Being an Asian Canadian means that I had to speak up for the Asian community as a minority back in North America. I could not believe that such xenophobia existed in Germany. From a Spielenabend, Nives mentioned that she also has a Croatian background. As a person also of immigrant background, I cannot understand why she has such a xenophobic mentality. I urge you guys to take this into consideration when deciding to study in Germany.
I also met young people here in germany (skin heads) which told me that foreigners had stolen their parents' jobs (which was BS by the way). Others told me about very bad experiences with immigrants/refugees who beaten them up and bullied them at school. I even had a very heated conversation with a german lady who got robbed and beaten up by a foreign lookin man. Its very hard to have a objective conversation with people about how their views are racist if they themselves have had bad experiences with “foreigners” or if they were influenced by their parents. In most cases i think some people are just afraid that others can come and live here.. so their "club" of being german isnt as exclusive as it seemed. XD

But USA is good at least , i would like it if i was born in USA , but Germany ? I don't know honestly , they're joyless , grey , uptight and miserable .
I'm originally from Germany. I have lived in the United States for almost 40 years and I have experienced discrimination in both countries. While in Germany I married an American GI and there was a tenant who kept removing our American name tag from the mailbox. In the States my kids used to get teased in school and were even called NAZI. They don't have an accent but they sometimes mentioned that their mom was German. I believe the world is the way it is because people in their own homes teach their kids hate. That's why there are wars and this righteous mindset is dividing people. Every one of us has a responsibility to teach peace, understanding and tolerance! Thank you for sharing this important subject!
Germany was the biggest disappointment of my life. So rude and arrogant people, always sad, complaining and doing everything the most complicated way. Sad.

I've suffered from xenophobia since I was a child, my parents sent me to numerous counselors to no avail. Still to this day I can't talk to some people and people think I'm racist or bigoted but I am suffering from a condition. Since when do we start hating people with phobias? I've started a group recently for anyone who is transphobic, homophobic, xenophobic, etc. The goal is to spread awareness of people's phobias and stop the hate from the so called woke people who never go after someone for being arachniphobic.
I notice the difference with people’s reactions to us. My husband speaks Lebanese to my daughter and I speak English and our experiences are totally opposite.

Very true. Congratulations on having taken a stand against those racist comments. I am Polish-American and have been living in Germany for 10 years on and off. I speak near-native German, hold a couple degrees from acclaimed American unversities and am employed by a multinational company in Germany. Having lived in numerous countries on three different continents, I never experienced a more unfriendly, inhospitable and judgemental nation than Germany. What makes living here even less fun is the fact that Germans are just too square, lacking flexibility and simple human spontaneity. It's almost as though they been tought from early on to supress their own feelings and vent by being unfriendly in a very blunt and cold manner. Relieved and happy to be leaving soon! Best of luck to you and your Polish husband! 🙂
As a german I can say, most of us Germans love Europeans especially polish people. Due to historical reasons. I dont know why so many people claim that Germany is the one of the worst countries. Just wanna mention that Germany is one of the most tolerant country. Countries like France, UK, USA, Russia, Arab States, Poland or Hungary are far worse thaj Germany. Many right Parties are in charge or even active and they even introduced xenophobic laws. What I think is that you all think Germany is bad cause most of you live here for a long time. I mean I have never experienced racism in France, why? Cause never have been to France. But I live in Germany since I was born. I met nazis, communist, right- and left people or salafists. Actually "Polish-American" is one of the most luckiest thing you can have here. Its more likely that Arabs, Blacks or Turks get attacked and insulted. And my last Point: If so many People view Germany as a second Poland full of racism, xenophobia and right-parties in power than sorry but thats not the truth and leave it if its so bad
And thats not true. Where do you live? In Berlin all the time Parties. In small villages everyone is drunk. Its more likely that some of you guys hating Germany so much are the reason that Germany gets worse and worse. Tbh you have gold points but I dont like you rethoric and generalisation.
@@Harwey-lz4gp Thanks for the input Harwey. The reason why I have my doubts about supposed German tolerance is because you label Poland as a racist country without having actually been or lived there - this is precisely the sort of Goebbels propaganda the former used to instill fear and discontant within the German population against all-things foreign. Poland has always been one of the most welcoming, hospitable and ethnically diverse countries in Europe (not counting the 50 years of communist rule with Russian troops stationed in the country as a result of the Germano-Russian attack in the Fall of 1939). The problem is the German public media which constantly portrays Poland as a lesser, backward and racist country ruled by a right wing government. This is unacceptable, unprofessional and simply not true. Germans are led to believe by their state to be unmistakeable. It would be great if they could finally start thinking outside-the-box.

They think of their country so high while they are just making min wages and haven’t achieved any thing major in life. Pretty funny man
Here in Italy there is a lot of racism towards people who come from countries which are in worse conditions, such as Romania, Albania or Morocco, and even some politicians are racist and they say that they should go back to their country because they are not welcomed here and because they are stealing jobs from Italian young people. Unfortunately, especially for historical reasons people from Northern Italy sometimes discriminate people from Southern Italy because the South is less developed than the North and finding a job isn't easy(I can say it since I was born and raised in Southern Italy). Sometime ago there was even a story of a young girl who moved to Milan, in the North, who wasn't allowed to rent a house there by the landlady because she was from the south, and the language used is really offensive, there is a word "terroni" that indicates Southern Italians and it literally means people who work in the fields, because in Southern Italy, especially in small towns, there are still a lot of people who are farmers, but the way in which they say it is to insult them. But what is so bad about working in the fields? Every job is respectable!
That's interesting to read. I have a friend from Northern Italy(who speaks perfect German but you can hear undertones of his Italian accent) who was once denied access into a club we were with a group of our other German friends about 15 of us. I was so shocked and dumbfounded because I wondered I am visibly black and that Security guard let me in, but someone from their neighbouring country was shunned basically with "we don't need shitty Italians here" but it was said in German. My partner was so shocked tried to intervene and he was told "do you wanna stay inside with your girlfriend or follow the shitty Italian" and that's how me my partner and one other friend decided to say bye to our other friends inside and went home.
I don't see racism in your examples. It is not racist to be against people who have ruined their own country and are now trying to improve their situation by benefiting from what your ancestors created for the benefit of their own descendants. The owners are trying to defend their property against large-scale(!) immigration of people who own nothing, which is a perfectly normal reaction.
@@Mark-eu6mc If discrimination is based on racial reasons, it can be called racism. If it's just about nationality, the term racism doesn't make sense. It should better be called nationalism or chauvinism. If locals discriminate against foreigners, that's perfectly fine because their land is owned by their people and a foreigner cannot claim the same right to use it for his own good as a local. This may not be very friendly to foreigners, but no people have an obligation to be friendly to foreigners, especially when those foreigners came uninvited. However, they have the right to defend their country against foreigners who want to take advantage of it. This is not a case of racism either but of ownership.
@@Mark-eu6mc I consider a country to be the property of a particular people. Ownership means firstly to freely decide about it and secondly to exclude the influence of others. I urge that the simple use of this right not be defamed as "phobia" or "hostility" as is currently widespread. Asserting such a right regarding the future of our own descendants (instead of other people's) is a legitimate political position that you may not agree with, but which you should respect.
Oh one more thing (after leaving a novel lol) when Kiwis hear Indians, Pacific Islanders and Chinese people speaking their language, it is also looked at with disapproval or it is mocked. As soon as they hear, French, Spanish, German or any other language, it's all of a sudden beautiful and unique 😅😅
No lmao. We actually laugh about the French, for german reasons hehe. But no, we literally eat chinese and indian food a lot and many germans like their cultures. Also only cause someone likes a language more it doesn't makes him racist or xenophobic
Excellent video! Thank you for that! I'm always shocked, when I see kids being racist, because that's taught by their parents. They keep passing it from one generation to another and that has to stop! And boy this older man's intolerance really pissed me off! (Sorry for using that kind of language!) In my opinion EVERY foreigner is welocome here! No matter where they are from, what they believe or how they look! I love having different people here! We all can learn so much from each other!! I was born and raised in Germany, but I'm part Polish from my mother's side and part Irish and part Italian from my father's side and I love it!!! I consider myself as an international soul 😊
Actually Germany does not have very good reputation in many countries and I gave it a chance and found out there are amazing Germans here. Fact be told travel the world with an open mind and you find that there are good and bad people everywhere.
Maybe to give a little backstory on why racism against Polish/Turkish/Arab/... people in Germany is so "popular". I guess this comes from the time when people from the countries came to Germany as workers. At this time, the goal wasn't to immigrate them into the German society so they founded their own society. That lead to a point where these structures are still very present nowadays so children are raised in the feeling of being a "foreigner" even though they are already the second or third generation afterwards. Because German society often gives them the mentioned glares or side-eyes, a lot of these families speak only the language of their grandparents which again leads to side-eyes. It is indeed a problematic situation. Maybe other people can explain that better than me but I just want to point out why there are weird encounters with people saying there would be "better" and "worse" foreigners. This problem was also described in the old song "Griechischer Wein" (Greek wine) from Udo Jürgens. In my eyes, the content is still very very contemporary.
Go to the Ruhrgebiet. Lot's of Germans have Polish family names, because of Polish ancestry. They are just normal Germans that don't get discriminated. There are other ethnicities that don't like the Germans and keep separate from them in their closed community. This is where you have a lot of potential for cultural conflict.
Arabs and Poles didn't come to Germany as "Gastarbeiter" (foreign workers). Arabs came as "refugees" because of the instability and lack of perspective in their own countries, while Poles were kept behind the Iron Curtain during the "Gastarbeiter"-Period. And Turks (mis-)used the right to let their family follow them (Familiennachzug) to increase their numbers in Germany to several million people and literally settle in another people's country, as Turks, never intending to become German (to assimilate), exept on paper - for getting the legal status of a German citizen.
@thKempe, not The Arabs whose onvestment of billions of petro dollars helped to prop up a nimber of German institutitons, like real estate companies and banks, though? Forgot that they happen to be super rich dictatorial monarchs put in office by nato, of which Germany is a key member. I have spent time in Germnay and have met Turkish-Germans who speak and act like their fellow countrymen. In fact, one Turkish-German chap opened a very popular beer and doner place in Montreal, Canada - he makes the beers on site.
There is a German saying: "Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm" "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" Children speak out openly what is spoken at home.
Speaking of Polish people, it reminds me of some classmates at my university being totally racist, luckily not towards me, but it definitely angered me. I was talking with my classmates about something, and somehow we touched on the topic of immigrants, I can't remember how. The two male classmates were saying something like, Poland and Russia only "export" their girls to Germany, and Polish and Russian girls were seductresses and wanting to marry German guys because Germany is a rich country. I was totally fumed and felt extremely disgusted because (a) I didn't expect that coming from university students; (b) I am an immigrant myself and (c) I know that a fact that one of those two classmates came from Croatia when he was little but grew up in Germany, so he should have known better not be racist. So, I said "you are from Croatia yourself and think about what you just said. Besides, it was extremely sexist." It became silent and quite awkward, so I just left.
Can you imagine being Black in Germany. The staring is awful, elders are miserable. But than again I've worn African traditional clothes, I've had 99% positive response from Germans, I had German kids telling me I look pretty. So there are very nice Germans but also very angry hateful Germans
@xTiptop Germans will call Indians and Arabs creepy for staring, but when Germans themselves do it, then it's just "day to day business". Germans can't possibly be creepy, right? Lol. How hard is it to be respectful and not stare at people?
@xTiptop What I also don't understand is if Germans hate foreigners so much, then why don't you take it up with your government and demand that they close the border? It's not our fault that we're allowed to enter your precious country. Take your frustrations out on your politicians, not innocent people.
There are idiots everywhere, but I think most people are friendly and mean no harm. I work in a very international environment and my experience is that there are cultural differences sometimes, but deep down on an emotional level we humans function all the same and you can relate to that. A little empathy is all it needs.
yes, THIS. Culture may differ in some points (for example the exessive amount of sarcasm that germans use) which can be seen quite rude but its just a cultural thing
I look in the mirror every single day before going out to make sure that I’m looking good and modern enough so that Germans don’t dislike me. That’s so exhausting.
Not to make light of your experience here being a foreigner, but if you were dark skin then it gets a notch higher. I agree with you that racism is everywhere in the world and its not only more common in Germany. I speak english with my kids and like you Germans give a kind of approval when they hear us.
I absolutely agree. The racism I’ve experienced/witnessed here is nothing compared to what many others experience on a daily basis but I still think my stories were worth sharing. One of my friends here is from Nigeria and it upsets me hearing about some of her racist encounters here in Germany. In saying that my husband’s best friend is African American/German (born in Germany) and has told us that he’s never experienced racism here.
@@AntoinetteEmily I always almost shy away from saying what your husband's best friend says. But I think we all have to be open and share to get a full perspective and for me to understand am probably blessed to have had the awesome encounters. I have only been in Germany for 2 years and I am yet to experience racism. I sometimes wonder if I am oblivious to it because I come from Kenya where there is a different problem of tribalism but that aside here in Stuttgart I have some great experiences except one ignorant lady(in her 40s) that asked me if I was a refugee and was shocked that my teeth are straight and white because am black LOL. But I really think like you Racism is a world wide problem because I expected some craziness coming here to study but that just has not been my experience. I must emphasize though that others have horrible experiences and that small group of evil people make such great impacts which is a pity.
@@AntoinetteEmily Then he has being just very lucky. When I was a child racism was quite more common and much more acceptable. Sometimes maybe less aggressive, but due to its regularity maybe even more hurting. You should not forget where Germany is coming from. It is coming from a society where the whole life was deeply based on racism and violence. Ordinary, friendly people steal their neighbours goods after those where deported to the gas chambers and treated like insects. That was not a single, but a widespread phenomenon. And these were not strange barbaric idiots. Germany was at that time maybe the most cultivated and scientifically advanced people on this planet. People had to proof there worth by their "bloodline", which became sometimes a question of life and death. Therefore your genetic analysis about your ancestors (in principle a funny interesting game) has some strange sound in many German ears (which is not your fault). Even if years have passed and many things have changed since then, there are still remnants deeply in our culture and sometimes they pop up like a nightmare. But they are still as real as the fantastic public social network, the great constitution, the pretty houses and the friendliness and honesty. There are many "Leichen im Keller" as we say. If you talk about it (carefully) with your polish part of your family you might find that there are still wounds left from that time also in our neighbours hearts and memories all over Europe. In principle it is all very sad and tragic, especially that it is so difficult even after all this, to learn that we are just brothers and sisters on our one and only planet. A real "German" weakness (every stereotype has some real core) is a lack of modesty and humility, which is valid far beyond extreme racistic people. This makes the people vulnerable for chauvinism against Eastern Europe, the South and the Middle East. The only medication is the contact with people from these areas which has being become more regular recently. Therefore, there is reason for some optimism for the future. By the way, it is great that you showed your Libanese soul, when you could easily escape towards Anglo-Saxonia. Maybe this guy learned something.
@@AntoinetteEmily As a mixed race person, you cannot understand how other people are concerned about their ethnic group identity. Imagine the Maori in New Zealand. Do you really want them to mingle with immigrants from Europe, Africa, and Asia until nothing remains of their ethnicity but the name? The Germans are the Maori of Germany. And it is already a quarter of them who have some migrant ancestry. Immigration is fine as long as it occurs in far fewer numbers than it does now.
Well I was never really racist , but I have to confess that a couple of years ago I thought I was because I really didn't liked people from African or Arabian countries. Not because of their skin color or their religion that never really mattered to me. It's just they were so loud! I could hear them metres away basically screaming when they just hold a conversation. Also when I didn't knew the person and they smile at me so wide with white teeth. Every time it set me on edge and I thought: 'Why is he smiling at me, is he flirting with me, what does he want?!` Only when I visited America and Egypt on holiday did I saw that it was normal for their cultures. They smile more and are more open with their emotions. I became aware that we Germans don't really smile that much and aren't so open with emotions but that awareness only came when I was out of my own cultural environment. I was never racist. It was just the differences in cultural behaviors and not knowing said differences that ticked me off. Today I am better accustomed to them and don't really mind.
But especially in Germany , in the Nordics , Spain , Netherlands UK and Ireland people were super friendly and nice . When you live in Germany long enough to understand their society , you understand why the Nazis were Germans of all people .
Better off, how so? Likely because lighter people's originate in those places and people tend to accept those who are of their own and from there themselves, even if distantly. America is a nationality, not an ethnicity. Nobody originated in America, we came from other place's and for many that was Europe. It's scientifically proven in psychology.
Xenophobia is a common problem wherever you go, as you already know. It isn't related to a country, it is inherent to human nature. You don't even need to be from a different country. I've had the privilege to live in different countries, so I can give you examples, in SE Brazil a lot of people look down at people from the NE of Brazil, people from Luzon in the Philippines look down at people from Visaya, in US , people with a strong Southern accent are also looked down from other Americans. There are more examples that I've seen in other countries, but this illustrate my point. Most of these stereotypes start at home, like the little girl in the playground, and gets perpetuated. Braking this cycle is very hard, but only education done correctly can reverse it.
You're absolutely right about the "positive discrimination" towards English speakers. It happens to us all the time. Often people are even keen to join in the conversation when I talk English with my daughter ( 4 yrs old ). And obviously they will talk about the benefits of being raised bilingual. But actually our daughter is trilingual and guess how certain people react when my ethiopian wife speaks Amharic to her? " Why don't you teach her to speak German?" , " This is Germany, why don't you people integrate yourselves into this society more?" , "Your daughter will suffer later in life because of your inability to teach her the language of this country!' They are surprised when my wife replies in perfect German and then have usually apologized. I think it may be because the English language is omnipresent and n everyday life and may be regarded as something "cool". It might also be jealousy about not having had the same opportunity . But it's probably mostly just good old fashioned racism. Nice video as always ..and as expected from a good foreigner😉😜
Wow I'm astonished cause I just realized that I have suffered this kind of discrimination!!! I was born in Venezuela Spanish speaker country but raised in Ireland and Portugal !! dad Irish , mum Portuguese !! I was lucky enough to grew up with 3 languages !! my wife is Venezuelan as well we moved here nearly 3 years ago !! but the creepy thing is that every time I speak Spanish with my wife which is pretty much on our daily basis I feel this deep and awkward German stares , now i have just discovered that certainly there isn't any positive feedback Whatsoever ! but when dad comes over and we speak English germans wants to even join us and they behave utterly different !! so this is real I’m appalled!! I ‘ve heard crazy racist stories in this country but honestly I’ve been pretty Naive and clueless about it !!!
It's about the hierarchy of races... total nazi thinking... English people rank quite high in German's opinion... English people are considered to be of "aryan" race, just like Germans, although not so much... hahaha... whereas arabs, latinos, hispanics, southerners, etc... are considered to be inferior races, the infamous "Untermensch", it's racism of the worst kind.
@@pf6570 Except my grandparents that died more than 20 years ago I do not know any Germans that do not speak at least some English. But I know maybe 5 persons speaking Spanish. So I am not surprised that people would have a different attitude towards English vs Spanish. Does not need racism to explain that.
@@pf6570 And that's with Spanish , which is usually a well liked language in Germany like French or Italian , i know a lot of Germans especially girls that learn Spanish and actively look for Spanish speaking boyfriends . If you speak non European languages , especially Arabic or something then it's much worse . One time a German guy on a train in Karlsruhe (South West Germany ) started screaming at a person for speaking what he thought was Arabic , turned out to be Hebrew , Woooupssii.
Welcome to my life XD. I'm from Syria , I'm doing my Master studies in here and work. People tell me that I am an exception in here and I'm really a good person but all other people who come from my country are shitty and despicable. :)
Difficult topic, we have to be nice to each-other . If we follow the laws, order and discipline in the country where we live shouldn't give racism. But the reality is unfortunately different. No matter where we live We all have to think that we are all foreigner . Our mother country is Africa I wonder what would be like if we emigrated to another planet. We would be happy if we met another inhabitant of earth, no matter what language they would spoke
Great video, very balanced. Others have already commented about racism vs. xenophobia, but the message is clear. The "good foreigners / bad foreigners" attitude is unfortunately very common. We all are susceptible to stereotypes, what makes the difference is whether you reflect and challenge them. If you don't, you end up like the old man you met.
You should try to understand why some foreigners are considered as "good" and others as "bad". There may be reasons not based on race but based on experience.
Grandma speaks German even in front of friends or boyfriends growing up we said speak English friends dont understand she kept speaking German said they will learn
In my 4 decades in Germany I have often had to hear "But you're an Engländerin; that's different" in response to my "I'm a foreigner, too", and it didn't give me a nice feeling, obviously! Another phenomenon I have come across here, although it is not likely to only occur in this country, is that certain ethnic groups tend to 'look down' on and criticize other ethnic groups, as though there were a hierarchy. I find this likewise absurd and disturbing. We still have a long way to Go.
What do you mean it's not likely to occur in this country ? If you mean UK then yeah people there are very chill and nice , but Germany ? Not only it does occur , it's Germany in a nutshell frankly , both past and present .
We Germans view european immigrants differently than non-europeans. Thats not meant to be racist or xenophobic. Its just normal that most Germans feel responsible to show solidarity to europeans.

I can totally understand you as a turkish person. Not everyone is like that but most of the time people are very racist. I love Germany and do not like my country, I am not even a muslim but all people immediately think that I am muslim and when they find out that I am not, they suddenly become more polite. This is really sad and i feel that nearly every singe day.
Hi, i feel like it all depends on what bubble you move in... most people I know really don't care about religion as long as you don't try to convert them 🤔 So saying most people in Germany is kinda wrong imo as for me, most people really don't care :-)
According to Wikipedia, 99% of Turks are Muslim. So why do you wonder about people who assume that you, as a Turkish person, are Muslim? And it is not racism not to like the Islamic religion (often anti-western and expansive and intolerant when you look at Islamic dominated countries around the world), because Islam is not a race.
Great video but I think the word racism needs to be clarified. Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized. Racism is not the dislike of a people from a different country unless the above applies. A German not liking a New Zealander just because they come from there doesn’t make them a racist, it just makes them a piece of crap. A lot of what you are calling racism is xenophobia. Keep up the great work!
The unability or rather unwillingness to differentiate between 'racism' and 'xenophobia' is a highly political issue! Rather slandering all kinds of prejudices or even sheer ignorance as " racist", is a way to belittle the gravety of true racist-faundated attitudes.
It seems like xenophobia is quite misunderstood. It's meeting something you've never meet and then instantly fearing it. The fear of the unknown. To me it's creatures like bugs and animals, new foods, trying new activities, anxiety in new social situations and so on. Imagine suddenly seing a dragon for the first time and not knowing they exist till that very moment. Then instantly thinking something bad is going to happen because the dragon is dangerous. Of course you can be both xenophobic and racist, but being xenophobic doesn't make you racist. The phobia has nothing to do with hate, only fear. It's a real phobia, just like being scared of clowns or spiders. But usually with xenophobia you're afraid of everything, untill you understand it's not dangerous.
In South Africa racism is defined as having beliefs that one's own race is superior to others and gives them entitlement to view other people of different race as inferior. In some other countries racism can be defined as having certain sexual preferences such as viewing a specific race as more attractive to the other. So the word racism has various meanings depending on the country obviously.
It is best to distinguish racism triggered by how people look and the kind of defensive nationalism based on what national identity they have and what language they speak. The latter is quite prevalent in Europe, unfortunately, and has slightly different characteristics than racism. It is often based on unhealed historical wounds and negative stereotypes on how "cultured" and urbane other nations are compared to one's own. Very often eastern and southern nations are despised by western and northern ones. National identity is a source of self-esteem, especiallly for individuals who need such self-esteem for psychological strength; and putting one's own nation above some others helps such people indirectly.
Off subject but today I found out that in Germany some people take their dogs to work! In my friends law firm they have six dogs there! I have never heard anything like that and wouldn't be allowed in UK. How wonderful that they allow that 💖🐶
I agree, there is Racism everywhere in the world. Thank you for sharing your experience. I live in America, have lived here for 28 years now. Racism is something that is widely accepted here in the US. Your 1st experience with the child shows that racism is something that parents and care giver teach their children. Racism won't stop until hate and fear against other cultures stop. That is what racism is, it is fear of the unknown and the reluctance to accept there are other cultures in this world who people can learn from. Accepting and learning about other cultures should be viewed as something to be treasured, as other cultures can enhance and compliment ours. I enjoy your videos.

Wir sind alle Ausländer, fast überall - we're all foreigners, nearly everywhere. Since English is usually the first foreign language taught at schools, people approve of you giving your kids a head start. On the other hand there are still families where only their language is spoken at home, basically isolating their children by putting them behind a language barrier until they attend school.
Some maybe. Our former syrian neighbors kids spoke 4 or 5 languages fluently though. They even gave the kurdish kids down the street new curse words every week ;)
THW werst you can do is to give not your mother tongue to your children but talk to them in a language you are not easy with. A child who learn one language really well is normally able to learn other languages much more easily than those who never learned at least one language perfectly. I am a teacher and we have lots of kids where the parents immigrated, speak some German and talk in German to their kids. Those do not have a any language to really express themselves in a detailed way. They didn't get the chance to make comfortable with a complex grammar system, so to adopt another one later. I always encourage parents to use whatever language they know best But there are already lots of parents who aren't firm in any language already!
Thank you for this. Listening to people's stories gives me an idea of what to expect so I don't get shocked when I finally live in Germany. I'm an Asian looking to migrate there for its good programs for scientists/researchers, but the issue of racism has always been something that held me back. I'm hopeful though, because I went there for a few days last year (Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover), and thankfully I did not encounter any racism.
You never encounter racism in Germany as long as they think you're just a tourist... spending your money in their country, that's always good for them!!! but as soon as they see you on a bus on a Monday morning, they assume you live there and there is when problems start... I would advise you against going to Germany because they'll make you suffer horribly, you'll get humiliated in ways that you cannot even imagine... Spare yourself the bad experience, there are other countries where people are a lot more "normal"...
I would, however, like to express the fact that, when I went to Munich - admitedly as a tourist, who cannot speak German, - I did NOT get any rqcist treatment, I was actually very warmly welcomed at various places on Munich. Also, I have very good German friends in Canada - I am Indo-Canadian, and have also had very pleasant and enjoyable experoences with my parents' German friends as well as with some very fine German families I had the pleasure of having met in the course of my work as an actor, to say nothing of sweet memories of a few German-tourist women in Montreal
Isn’t WOG an acronym for Western /Oriental gentleman? Used in the same friendly manner that Dutchy, Yank, Pom, Kiwi or Aussie and the like are used. I don’t think any such names are intended to be racist. Conversely, they are nicknames and relate to geographical origin.
@ The Naish production It is a word in the Oxford dictionary and has a geographical origin as I said. Perhaps over time people have misused and degraded the word, but it definitely hasn’t always been that way.
I am was surprised, no better... I was shocked, when you talked about the differences of German‘s handling between non German or non English speaking people and German or English speaking persons. I never noticed it....until now. It is really sad to say, but you got right. And I cannot explain, why it happens. In that cases I am shaming for my nationality. We all are human and our behaviour and acting make the real differences!!!
Well, you do not understand, but you judge them. They may have reasons to make a difference between people coming from England/NZ/USA or from Turkey, Arab countries or even Poland.
I'm german. Born, raised...everything. Not really xenophobic. I think it's about time to judge people by their behaviour here. May they be german or "foreigners". I hate this old statement "Ich bin stolz, ein deutscher zu sein!". That was a saying of the right wing folks. What for? I was proud to be a german, when Hayley once stated that she got more racist comments back home in the US in 14 days than she got in 2 years of living in Germany. THAT made me proud of beeing one of them. On the other hand: we do have some people here, who don't behave well against others. Coming here from other countries. And treat us like crap. I've experienced that. Mostly towards an ex-gf. Molested by such folks to a max. To an extent, where she and a friend walked into a police station, to get rid of a molestor. We (all) need to stand tall against people like that. But: point at the single person! And not judge by language or colour or whatever. But blame that person. Aloud! Call the police, if you're molested! It doesn't make you a racist, if this person is black. (That was, what my gf and me experienced so many times. I wish I'd had the balls to call the police, back then. ) It is upon us to form the society we wanna live in, in the years to come.
The last thing may be a problem nowadays. I don't know if this still happens. The story I remember happened aroune 2003. A classmate had been beaten hard by some Turkish guys (he didn't do anything than smiling at their sister). He contacted the police and since it had happened on his way home from school the school also was involved into the talk with the police. It ended up with telling him that he better not press charges because onr might think that he (or the school) is xenophobic. When you've experienced something like that you might hesitate to contact the police if someone who looks or sounds like a foreigner would do something criminal against you.
@@UntotesSchaf Sad, but true! I came to experience a situation up here, only months ago. Dealing and consuming drugs right next to a Berufsschule, here. With no fear, no respect. The "kings" of the place. The police doesn't do anything. Makes me so sad. That is the seed to make people vote for the right wing politicians.
Hello Antoinette! I hope your pregnancy is going well and you are getting rest ( if possible lol) I am South African with Indian bloodlines and have been living in NZ for 23 years. Most of the time, Kiwis are accepting and open minded too (not as open minded as the Germans that I have met here in NZ but still, they are open minded which is great) I have experienced so much racism here in NZ and although it's not on a daily or weekly basis, it has been shocking and bewildering for me as I now consider myself to be a New Zealander. The times that it had happened, it's been so venomous and toxic. A lot of times I have been yelled at or mocked by Maori people mainly and with Pakeha, it's been more of an ignorance and them assuming way to many things about me and my race. I am in no way saying that all Kiwis are like this as that would be completely untrue. Watching your video has been emotional, thank you for raising this topic as its so relevant in this world. My son, he is born here in NZ and I have always known that he is kiwi, unfortunately though, because of our darker skin, he has also been exposed to racist labels from kids at school. Luckily, his mentality is " how stupid are they mum?!?" - Take care Antoinette :)
Thank you so much for the well wishes. I am so saddened reading about your experience with racism in New Zealand. I love the mindset and values you have installed in your son. Sending you a big hug from Germany xx
@@AntoinetteEmily You're welcome! Thank you for replying! In general, the world is most definitely moving forward when it comes to this issue and there still isn't anywhere I would rather be over NZ. Honestly, I think these two incidents were actually peanuts, the first too grotesque to be taken seriously, the second so normal that I wouldn't really mind. The most severe form of racism happens in already existing hierarchies and is usually rather hidden and covert, namely racial discrimination in the educational system and at the workplace, which can have really destructive and long-lasting impacts on the victims, and often it's very difficult to prove the racist motivation in the first place. What characterizes German racism is this often mentioned "Man darf ja nichts mehr sagen" ("we're not allowed to say anything anymore") - and yet racism still finds its way: Subtle, from behind, and most of the time hardly provable. This tactic has been perfected during the last seven decades.
Interesting. I am glad it was not a story about physical violence against you. Over here in France, I also notice this reaction of being "the good kind of foreigner".

In England they are worse, speak English or be hung!!! English has taken over and been the dominant language globally, that I can ever more understand Germans need to feel strong urge to preserve their unique language and in their own country visitor's/guests should certainly respect it!!! It isn't the natives and locals being "rude" or backward but those who show up and demand or push their ways onto their host that is quite outlandish and unwelcome/unpleasant. Countries should be focused on the crisis of their own people right now, if they were, the issue of foreigners wouldn't even exist and some semblance of progress would be possible in regards to homelessness, poverty, hunger, lack of education and health care services for those who worked for their native Homeland. This is sense & reason, responsibility. NOT racism.
Moin Antoinette, sehr wichtiges Thema! und sehr gutes Video über den Rassismus in Germany und der Welt! Wir können uns nicht oft genug gegen den dummen Rassismus aussprechen! LG Ben
Hello Antoinette, good afternoon!! Very good idea to talk about that topic!! Well done, social media platforms are part of our live and appreciate if someone really tries to talk from time to time about serious, difficult topics.👍 Germany and the whole world has a huge problem with racism and we need to talk about and it's absolutely necessary, there was to much silence about the topic for a very long time, far to long for my opinion and if nobody talks about we can't get over it and solve the issues we have. For a very long time the society in Germany was built on racism and discrimination, in the earlier times we didn't noticed so much, news about it came a few days later, now with the internet news coming immediately to us and we can hear and react much faster. So thanks for sharing your experience, it's really sad that guys have still to deal with it. That's one reason why education, conversation and learning be traveling is really important and kids should have the opportunity to meet other people in different ways to learn about each other. And that's why homeschooling for my personal opinion is not the right way, it's not always good if kids hear only the opinions from the parents and they decide what the kids should know about the world.
There's a lot of bad blood between Poland (and other Slavic speaking countries) and Germany historically speaking. I've definitely had my fair share of germanophobia from Polish people on the internet, less so irl which, I guess would speak to your theory that most people aren't racist/xenophobic and those who are are just very vocal about it.
The argument of racism exist everywhere is not valid. Murder happens everywhere, but statistics show that it occurs less frequently in some specific countries. Similarly, statistical evidence suggests that discrimination could also occur more often in certain countries.
Excellent video. i live in the USA, where we are now going through difficult times related to race as we have been for over 200 years. I knew growing up in NYC as a child, that we have no choice i our birth. why is that so difficult for people to understand. Greater understanding comes by putting yourself in the other person's shoes.
At age 5 (in the 60s) having moved back from Oz to Germany I was greeted by my future playmates with a hearty "thank you very much, englisch lernen is quatsch"... the kid you describe was obviously charged by it's parents.

Yes, as a German I think your assessment of the situation in Germany is spot on. There is a strict hierarchy of countries based on how civilized they are perceived and people from different countries get treated as such. The irony of that being not such a civilized behaviour in itself is lost on most people. It is ok to have your guard up with certain countries more than with others (e.g. it would be naive to think Afghan rural people would be on the same level on gender equality compared with NZ or Germany) but nonetheless you should treat everyone the same and that is according to their behaviour.
Actually Afghan women are more indepedent (or used to be) than German women, whose own government only requires from them to be good housewives and to clean well... and serve the husband. Not quite the way of thinking of the tru Afghan society (not taliban, that's another story)
@@alexandrorocca7142 Absolutely true, sadly. However, the experiences she mentioned were purely xenophobic. Not that it makes them any better or less disgusting. I just believe one should be accurate when talking about these topics.
Very much so. When she told the story of the old man I thought he would have praised every country he ever went to. And he might be afraid of those things he did not know. Me, I am prejudiced against most Muslims, except the ones I know. Those are not Muslims in my mind but simply "friends"
@@wora1111 You're describing a whole new area of prejudices. Being Muslim isn't a race and a prejudice towards Muslims also isn't necessarily xenophobic, since Muslims can be born as a Caucasian German as well as a Chinese Asian or black African etc., etc.. You are describing Islamophobia. The field of prejudices, racism and phobias is just endless ......
@@Dog.eatdog What you call prejudice is some kind of experience. If you observe all of the Islam-dominated countries in the world, you may have reasons not to want these people to influence your country with their way of thinking and lifestyle.
Great video Antoinette. Racism is as old as time itself. I can remember racism in NZ and it was really blatant. My parents used words that I wouldn't repeat here. And you are right about Maori being first in the country (Tangata Whenua). The young girl you encountered wasn't born racist. It's a learned behaviour from her parents. So in the UK racism is endemic sadly and Germany like NZ NZ and the UK will have their right wing groups. I think one of the most moving songs I've heard characterises human behaviour. It's called Abraham, Martin and John thus version is performed by Tom Clay. If you have a ball I wouldn't blame you. Listen to the narrative between the adult and the young boy. I'll never understand human nature. We're essentially all in the same bodies just packaged up in different coloured exterior. One question. Do you know Mike Hanna. I have been thinking about him for so long. Take care from Greater London.
That is crazy, a 10 year old girl having problems with foreigners not talking in german. But you cannot blame that girl for it. She was most likely just copying a behavior she experienced with her parents
I'm so shocked... I still can't understand that some people see a different in humans. We are all equal... Some have light hair or dark skin, have curls or not.... That is just the look... but inside all have blood and bones etc. ... Every single person wants to live in peace and freedom. And I have learned: Be kind to your guests. So: EVERYONE who wants to live here and tries to be kind to neighbours and strangers is welcome. .... Still shocked...
Do you know, how many people live at this planet? EVERYONE is welcome? Are you silly? Do you want to ruin your home country and the future of your children and grandchildren?
Dear Antoinette, I miss videos about raising kids bilingual. I have at the moment this question: in the first year(s), when you couldn't speak German, and you went to the playground, and your kid was talking German to other kids or mothers (who said maybe important things to your kid), how did you deal with this, because you couldn't understand what they were talking about. And later, when your kid got better and better in German, wasn't this very frustrating for you, that you were excluded, if your kid talked with others German e.g. in shops or Kindergarten. How did you talk to the Kindergärtnerin? How did you deal with the frustration, e.g. after a difficult talk in the Kindergarten or if you didn't understand, what other mothers said at the playground? I ask this, because my friends (with their toddler) want to move from UK to Germany and he, the father, can't talk German at all and I wonder, how frustrated he will be, he loves his son (1,5 years old) who is already talking perfectly both languages, but in Germany it will be very difficult for the father. If your video would contain something, that encourages the parents-parts, who can talk only one language, that it will be fine, that the kid talks the unknown languages to the others and that it just takes time and after e.g. 2 years it's getting easier and easier to understand something... or so, that would be helpful for him, loosing fear from the step to go to the new country and the difficult contacts there. ...
A lot of German people are able to speak english nearly fluently because we learn it in school (Nowadays from class one, but when I went to school (from 1986 to 1996) from 5th grade on). So your friend mustn't be that afraid. Even in Kindergarten he might be able to talk English. People will at least understand a lot of his questions and will answer either in English or in another way he's able to understand.
@@marrykurie48 but he will not understand, what other kids and adults say to his son, I think this can cause a strong feeling of being excluded and he will not always want to ask his son to translate everything, or it's just not possible if many people say something... So that's why I ask how it was for Antoinette at the beginning. (And if it would be me, I would think I wouldn't be happy if for example my 4 years old would have some friends at home and they all talk a language I don't understand and I couldn't say nice and funny things to the kids, that wouldn't be nice for me...)
That little German girl was SO eccentric/bizarre and sounded like she needs help (which I hope she got because her family clearly supports her intolerable behaviour). I could easily tell before you even started talking about her character and behaviour. All racist people NEED a tremendous amount of help...
my honest opinion on this might be a bit controversial. I was raised with a lot of prejudice against people from Eastern Europe and especially against Muslims. My grandparents always blame refugees for basically everything. On the other side English speaking people seemed to be very educated and it felt more connected to my own culture. That might be a reason why people think new Zealanders are more welcome in Germany . i think it has somehting to do with people being scared of the unknown. Since i was around a lot of immigrants( and also foreign people when i was in other countries) in the past years I became more open minded. I no longer judge people after origin, but it took a lot of time to reverse the opinions you got tought by your family as a kid. I love my grandparents but its always a fight when they start to talk about immigrants.
Great travelling the world and exposing yourself to those who don't look like you is the antidote to the unnecessary hate. You quickly learn there exists good and bad people everywhere.
You don't have to expect mass immigration from developed countries like the UK, NZ, AUS or the USA. Your opinion towards people from these countries may therefore be more welcoming than towards people from vast undeveloped areas who would improve their lack of perspective by moving to your country.
It's definitely not caused by the "unknown" , because Muslim and Eastern European people are far more "known" in Germany than English speaking people , so whatever the real cause is , it's not the "unknown" , you eat more Döner Kebab than Turkish people themselves and you're framing as if it's an Indiana Jones adventure into the unknown to get to know them . Germany is a country that was gassing children and babies for the crime of being born Jewish or Eastern European , and that's only 80 years ago , essentially yesterday not even the life time of a single person , and that explains it far better .
@@muatheluafi6816 yeah its not fear of the unknown. its that they regard anglosaxons as a higher race. thats why they tried to wipe out the russians after they got screwed over by the french, american and english at versailles.
I genuinely appreciate the story of immigrants sharing. Thank you for being honest and also not propagating this false idealized Europe/Australia/etc. i appreciated the video 👏🏾
Similar experience here in Australia. Growing numbers of racism/xenophobia, less likely towards caucasians but more and more towards people coming from Asian/Arab countries, unfortunately something we see all over the western world. (A German living in Australia for the last 22 years). Great honest video👍
I completely agree with what you said, it's really, really hard to see how badly foreigners are sometimes treated here (as well as many other countries). I'm shocked to hear what some really close members of my family would say and (given they are rather left/green in terms of their political opinion) it's even much more terrifying to extrapolate to actual right wing racists... And I totallly agree with the "good foreigner" story. I lived in Switzerland, Brazil, France and Portugal (apart from Germany where I grew up) and as a German you tend to belong to a very privileged group. My landlord once openly told me that he'd be totally OK with Germans and happy to welcome them but definetely not with "those Arabs" or people from Kosovo... In Portugal people are really happy to have German tenants but I could cry hearing the stories of my black cape verdian friend looking for a place to rent... So even I have my personal experience of being totally welcome in Portugal and not at all in Switzerland I see how this is a very subjective experience which can't be translated into a general statement about racism in these countries.
It's really sad! Did u enjoy living in my home country Brazil? In a German uni, a friend of mine was threatened to be kicked out because he said to the coordination that his stats prof was ignoring his questions
Thanxs for that video! I'm, as an "East-German" ( guess you know, why i'm hightlightning this) also struggle with all that racism , we have in Germany. In your videos you often talk about the really good an lovely stuff of Germany. I often recommend germans to watch your videos, to see what beautiful and great country they live in. But we also have to face the truth: there is still a lot of racism in our country! I would recommend everyone to go abroad, to notice, what great country they live in! And to feel, how it fells to be a stranger or a foreigner.
When will these germans understand that they were, are, and never be superior ? There will be always someone who will be dominant She isn't a kid anymore. She is adult and mature enough to know where to speak and where to not.
I as an Bavarian growed up with the dual wourld picture that the wourld is splitted between "Bayern" and "Preußen". And "Preußen" means not from my hometown. Now as an adult I can laught about that.
Exactly the same in the UK. I'm French and my husband is Spanish, and everyone seems to praise that our child will be raised trilingual. Unfortunately, not often the same reaction with Polish parents or many other cultures.... Same discrimination in France and Spain though, what a shame. People need to travel and experience life outside of their own countries a bit more probably.
Guess that's mostly it. People that got around usually aren't discrimatory or xenophobic. It those who never dared to broaden their horizons and think everybody needs to be up to their warped standards.
It is said that the Polish language has worldwide the most ethnophaulisms for German people. The elected representatives of Poland intend to still demand huge compensation from Germany because of World War II, despite Poland has already taken away about a third of the German territory during the 20th century, not only after WW II, but also after WW I. And they had expelled about 10 Million German people from their traditionel home country, what would be named "ethnic cleansing" today, claiming they couldn't live next to them after what happened during the war. And nowadays they immigrate in large numbers (they form the 2nd largest group of immigrants after the Turks) into what is left of Germany, joining again the Germans they didn't want as neighbors in their own country. And the last point is criminalism: some craftsmen alongside the Polish border could no longer even find an insurance company to insure against theft of tools, machines and vehicles from their workshops and factories because this happened too often. Why should Germans welcome people from Poland?
Well, would not call myself a racist because I usually get along with people of all colours and religions. Been to Australia for a year and on my job I spend a lot of time (12 hour shift) with a turkish family aso/ just two examples. But I have to admit that l fell bothered if people speak a foreign language around me. And yes, I do make an exception for the English language. The reason is pretty simple. English is a school subject in Germany. It is spoken around the world, often needed for a job or if you download something on your laptop. Most people in Germany understand at least a little bit of what you say and that gives a sense of security. I do not listen in on people but subconsciously I recognise that the people over there speak about what they want to eat or they laugh about a joke and not me. I pass them without a second thought. Especially if it is a group speaking very loudly about something I can not understand is funny or the start of an argument it does feel uncomfortable. It gives children quite a head start if they can speak more than one language and if there is a native speakers in the family. But you have to speak the language that is most often used in the country you live in. As long as the a child can speak German just as well as the other language I see only benefits. On the other hand there are quite a a lot of people who can not speak German even after living here for more than 20 years. Those people only speak one language at home, their children speak it with their friends who have the same background. Bad grades at school follow because of the language problem. In some areas they even lower the education level for the whole class because the teachers simply can not teach the required things without simple basics. This is the reason why people judge differently.

Australia has a racist reputation but I experienced more racism in my Europe study abroad than my entire life back home. I'll also note that unfortunately I also experienced racism/unpleasantness from Turks/Middle Eastern people in Germany.

20+ years living in Germany. I was mostly taken aback by the unwarranted and deliberate meanness and spite I’ve experienced with a lot of people. It was mostly from Germans, but also from people of other ethnic groups.
So these Nazis did not learn anything from ww2?
Sorry for you
My mother is German and often had comments and dirty looks when she spoke English with me in Germany as a child.

The biggest part of xenophobia is towards arabs and slavs.
The germans always get veeeery self conscious with afro american looking people. African looking? Racism shows again hard. (Obviously only noticed it as i am slav)
But to share a little story myself: my family came to germany 1946 over austria fleeing from the soviets.
At least the nazis could be bribed enough to spare us and our workers)
Fast forward to me in a job interview i got asked about my unusual last name and mention the romanic background and 3 min later the interview was over. They didn't even write me to tell me i didn't get the job.
In my experience the most aggressive xenophobia you'll have in major cities and outside bavaria.
Bavarians are... Well special. They live my the saying "ignorance is a bliss" and have a pretty akward way of saying stuff. My favorite example for their xenophobia "lieber ein neger in lederhosen als einen preußen am stammtisch" (roughly translated: we prefer a negro in lederhosen/folk dress rather than a prussian sitting at the locals table)
It sounds very rude but their intention is only to highlight how hated the prussians are.

Moves was a fascistic Croatian woman
XD

@@AntoinetteEmily For sure your stories are worth sharing! Being Nigerian myself, I can totally relate to your friend's experience.
Well I was never really racist , but I have to confess that a couple of years ago I thought I was because
I really didn't liked people from African or Arabian countries. Not because of their skin color or their religion that never really mattered to me.
It's just they were so loud! I could hear them metres away basically screaming when they just hold a conversation. Also when I didn't knew the person and they smile at me so wide with white teeth. Every time it set me on edge and I thought: 'Why is he smiling at me, is he flirting with me, what does he want?!`
Only when I visited America and Egypt on holiday did I saw that it was normal for their cultures.
The whiter your skin and fairer your hair is the better you’re off not only in Germany but in most European countries.
A trick: you can watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Terrell Dustin Yea, have been watching on flixzone for years myself =)
But especially in Germany , in the Nordics , Spain , Netherlands UK and Ireland people were super friendly and nice . When you live in Germany long enough to understand their society , you understand why the Nazis were Germans of all people .
Better off, how so? Likely because lighter people's originate in those places and people tend to accept those who are of their own and from there themselves, even if distantly. America is a nationality, not an ethnicity. Nobody originated in America, we came from other place's and for many that was Europe. It's scientifically proven in psychology.
You know that there are white people who has jet black hair, brown hair, ginger hair and blonde hair.
True,i from brazil
Glad you mentioned Brazil
You're absolutely right about the "positive discrimination" towards English speakers. It happens to us all the time. Often people are even keen to join in the conversation when I talk English with my daughter ( 4 yrs old ). And obviously they will talk about the benefits of being raised bilingual. But actually our daughter is trilingual and guess how certain people react when my ethiopian wife speaks Amharic to her? " Why don't you teach her to speak German?" , " This is Germany, why don't you people integrate yourselves into this society more?" , "Your daughter will suffer later in life because of your inability to teach her the language of this country!'
They are surprised when my wife replies in perfect German and then have usually apologized. I think it may be because the English language is omnipresent and n everyday life and may be regarded as something "cool". It might also be jealousy about not having had the same opportunity . But it's probably mostly just good old fashioned racism.
Nice video as always ..and as expected from a good foreigner😉😜
There is no positive discrimination towards English speakers in Poland
Difficult topic, we have to be nice to each-other . If we follow the laws, order and discipline in the country where we live shouldn't give racism. But the reality is unfortunately different. No matter where we live
We all have to think that we are all foreigner . Our mother country is Africa
I wonder what would be like if we emigrated to another planet.
The perogative of age ...

Hi, i feel like it all depends on what bubble you move in... most people I know really don't care about religion as long as you don't try to convert them 🤔
So saying most people in Germany is kinda wrong imo as for me, most people really don't care :-)

Thank you for educating me on this very important topic ❤️
I guess racism and xenophobia ate just the two sides of a medal. For a racist there exist good foreigners as well as for a xenophobe.
The unability or rather unwillingness to differentiate between 'racism' and 'xenophobia' is a highly political issue!
Rather slandering all kinds of prejudices or even sheer ignorance as " racist", is a way to belittle the gravety of true racist-faundated attitudes.
great comment and nice response from Antoinette!
So the word racism has various meanings depending on the country obviously.
how can a person be racist because of theirs sexual preferences 💀
is a homosexual heterophobic just because of their sexuality?
Yeah. It could somehow be compared to colonialism. I mean when natives had to fight for their territories against europeans. Now it's kinda reverse
Germans are Xenophobic... you can see remnants of n@$i germany in their behavior and culture. Gosh... soo unfriendly
Off subject but today I found out that in Germany some people take their dogs to work! In my friends law firm they have six dogs there! I have never heard anything like that and wouldn't be allowed in UK. How wonderful that they allow that 💖🐶
it may differ from place to place, but if you talk to your employer you can do that
I agree, there is Racism everywhere in the world.

Great reaction to the old guys racism! I laughed hard imagining his face. :-)
Hi.
I wonder how you got on in Germany. Did everyone treat you well? And did you stay there?
I wish I'd had the balls to call the police, back then. )
It is upon us to form the society we wanna live in, in the years to come.

Do you think Germany still has some form of Racial hierarchy ?

NOT racism.
Moin Antoinette, sehr wichtiges Thema! und sehr gutes Video über den Rassismus in Germany und der Welt!
Wir können uns nicht oft genug gegen den dummen Rassismus aussprechen!

Before 2015 I would have started an argument to counter this video...now I am just sad how Germany is drifting in all the wrong directions...
Hello Antoinette, good afternoon!!
Very good idea to talk about that topic!! Well done, social media platforms are part of our live and appreciate if someone really tries to talk from time to time about serious, difficult topics.👍
Germany and the whole world has a huge problem with racism and we need to talk about and it's absolutely necessary, there was to much silence about the topic for a very long time, far to long for my opinion and if nobody talks about we can't get over it and solve the issues we have.
For a very long time the society in Germany was built on racism and discrimination, in the earlier times we didn't noticed so much, news about it came a few days later,
now with the internet news coming immediately to us and we can hear and react much faster.
So thanks for sharing your experience,
it's really sad that guys have still to deal with it.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Sorry to hear you had some negative encounters

Hi Antoinette, I like your videos, your personality they show and your accent
I think that Germans don’t say anything against people speaking English because the most of them understand English.

Richard Rodgers hit things on the head in South Pacific with his song called "You've Got To Be Taught". Children show no racism until they grow older.
Xenophobia and racism are not the same thing.
Some people engage in both effortlessly.
@@mattesrocket Well, I guess it's your friend's decision whether he wants to take the risk then or not. :-)
@@marrykurie48 and I'd advise him to start learning a bit of German now, it's not all that difficult!
Thank you for sharing these experiences.
I’m English and I got a bit of a lecture by a Polish man I work with when he found out I was learning German; it was very awkward 😅
Just watched The Hater, a recent Polish, film on Netflix examining extremism. Really good.
Interesting recommendation. Thanks
When I visit Germany if I speak English they are nice but try and talk German and they are rude
Not a surprise, their story is not a secret.
Terrible ... so terrible people
When will these germans understand that they were, are, and never be superior ? There will be always someone who will be dominant

I as an Bavarian growed up with the dual wourld picture that the wourld is splitted between "Bayern" and "Preußen". And "Preußen" means not from my hometown. Now as an adult I can laught about that.
In Bayeren ist man erst Bayer und dann Deutscher, im Rest von Deutschland ist man erst Deutscher und dann die lokale Zugehörigkeit.

@@thkempe Because people from poland are awesome
