You blew the final frontier of my mind. The barrier I've been trying ever so hard to break. I've never been able to put... this cluster of thoughts into words before. And you got it. Thank you. I have a new level of respect for you.
Yes. "If I cared about all the cats in the world the way I care about my cat, I would never leave my bed due to the crushing weight of the responsibility of all of these sad, impoverished, lonesome cats"
thank you hank. for those of us who really think we should (and tend to try to) really love everyone and thing in that hardcore way you just described so aptly...this video is a welcome reminder to take a load off, if you will. i really appreciate it, seriously.
I've been rewatching all of your videos, and came across this one, approximately 15 minutes after I found out that Chester Bennington died. My heart is still breaking for him and his family and for the band, but somehow, even 9 years after I found you guys, you still manage to be the most important and world-explaining internet-based influences I've had. Thank you. Sorry for the mushiness, caring too much for anything and everything just hits waaay too close to home.
I'm really glad you made this video. First of all, I completely agree. Second of all, it's good to see that other people feel the same kind of uncomfortable, necessary not-love when something bad happens, but that we don't have a personal connection to. And now I'M rambling.
I get overwhelmed very easily at the mention of something terrible happening to anyone or anything anywhere in the world. It's why I avoid the news at all costs because anything can set me off and depress me for hours or days. It's why I freak out when it comes to donating to a charity- because there are so many amazing causes and I can't donate to all of them. I have a really hard time distancing myself from tragedies.
Really well said and very true. I really care about stuff that happens, but some people can get depressed about not being able to do 'enough' about it. You are awesome
After all the turmoil happening right now, I had a vague memory of this video and really wanted to watch it but couldn't find it for days. I just stumbled across it on accident and it means so much more now than when I first saw it. Thanks for these words - it's easy to get horrified by everything we don't feel that we think we should. Especially when others' situations are objectively, disproportionally worse. I have to remember this.
I loved you example of loving you own cat but, feeling compassion for all the cats of the world. I work as a veterinary nurse and I will have to use this when ever anyone askes how do you do it, seeing all these animals sick. I just can't feel the same love I do for my own cat compared to my clients. Thank you so much!!
I should probably create a new playlist: Vlogbrothers Videos that Make Sense. All of your videos make sense, of course, but there are some that illustrate world issues so clearly and comprehensively that I feel like I have a better understanding of everything when I watch them. When you talk about the environment, John talks about politics and you both talk about how to make the world a better place, you're so impassioned that you really teach me about what's important. So thank you.
I dont know why, but seeing this video made me realise something. And it has nothing to do with the concept. When this video was recorded, i couldn't speak English. Now i can, and iTS weird to realise i can understand this now, but not when it was recorded. I recognitie i just learned an interne language in only 5 years. What if we could hold on to that. Wow, i wish i could learn a new language every 5 years. Wish people didnt get old. So random :)
That's the reason I'm subscribed to you, right here. Your thoughtful videos always make my day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts like this. Both of you.
I know this video is ten years old but I come back to it a lot because it’s such an important sentiment. I’m not gonna sum it up in my own words because Hank expresses it really well here. Thanks 2009 Hank!
I agree with what you said, and it sets a good baseline for how to act. I think you and your brother express the same philosophy, with tiny differences. He stresses the importance of imagining others complexly, whether they be the other students in our school or people halfway around the world- see people as people. It's also important to try to understand others' perspectives. Exhausting, yes, and it gets in the way of a lot of good fights, but it's necessary if you want to make a difference.
i totally agree with you, hank. my friend's brother got really hurt once and i didn't really know how to react at the time. because i wanted to be there to support my friend, but at the same time i don't want to be in a corner crying over someone i've only met once.
THERE WAS A HANK GREEN ADD WITH THE SONG "I F******* LOVE SCIENCE" PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND AND HE WAS ACTING IN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Hank. I actually do think about this kind of thing often. And I agree with you 100%. I'd also like to thank you for the funny face because I had a wisdom tooth taken out toady and so my day has sucked. but that silly face cheered me up. If you care at all about this, congratulations, your endowed with a large amount of compassion!
This video is made of awesome. Thank you for the insight Hank! I have the same problem of feeling bad that I should feel bad for people, but its true - the action that goes along with compassion effects the world in a much more positive way than guilt about feelings.
I agree with your point - I think it can be just as effective, and sometimes more productive, to feel "compassion" instead of "soul-crushing love" for the larger world. However, thinking this does not stop me from FEELING "soul-crushing love", even in situations where it is not productive. Despite recognizing that it is not effective, and is probably also selfish, it does not seem to be an emotion that I am able to control...
I thought the same thing. I believe approaching any situation with empathy is best. Thus, we can seek to understand someone else's feelings or events and still remain detached and rational.
So true. I went through a period where I loved everyone, and I felt like I was going crazy. Also, the stuff in the beginning about death is true. My high school lost two kids almost exactly a year apart, the second one being this June. Both were kids I had seen and talked to, but weren't friends with. And their memorial services with a gazillion people there made me realize that there's no wrong way to deal with death. You don't have to feel awkward, just care.
This sounds like the concepts of circle of concern and circle of influence from "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People." The gist of that is figure out what ways you can help and then focus on those, instead of worrying about all you're not able to do. Someone in my counseling psych class mentioned that today, which was the first time I'd heard of it. And here I find it again in a vlogbrothers video. Neat coincidence.
FINALLY! I'm sending this vid to my friends. Whenever someone dies all I say is "oh" and they FREAK on me for "not caring". I care, I'm just not going to tear apart my soul for them!
My cat has to have an operation on Saturday, it's a bit stressful. Thank goodness I don't feel the crushing weight of loving all the sad, sick and lonely cats in the world, I don't think I would ever be able to do anything but worry about them. I definately have compassion towards animals as much as I possibly can though, and I think that is very important. To sum up that rant, I agree with you. You often phrase ideas similar to my own much better than I ever seem to, so thanks!
This is true. We can only give so much before we run out, whether that be money, emotion, time, or whatever else. It isn't possible to save the world alone, but we can save the worlds of a handful of people if we focus. To make a major change we have to rely on the exponential growth of paying it forward. Otherwise we merely overextend ourselves and accomplish little in the process other than feeling overwhelmed.
Wow. Just wow. I actually watched this video with a friend for the first time ever. Sometimes I wonder if you are just in my brain... or we have similar lines of thinking. I couldn't agree more with you, Hank. If we cared about everyone deeply.... we'd end up crying in a corner for our whole lives. Then we could never do any good. However, not caring at all isn't effective either. We need the right about of caring... not too much. Not to little. Just right. -Sara
I've always understood the concept of love according to its classical definition: that is, willing the good of the other as other, separated from selfish interests. This means that love is not an emotion, but an act of will, more in line with what Hank refers to as compassion. Therefore, I think it's entirely possible to love someone you dislike, or are outright repelled by. This is what I think we ought to mean when we say we love all the world.
Hank, you are so right. I agree with you completely agree with you. It's hard to believe that you can feel TOO much love in a world that is so corrupt, but if only one person felt the weight of that whole world that relies on it for love, they would not love at all. An example of compassion vs. love is all the fuss about Michael Jackson. Of course, it was absolutely tragic, but he was one person. He may have had a huge effect on the world, but people die every day. What about those families?
All good points, Hank. I like when you guys make a serious video every now and then. I spend a lot of time depressed about too many things because I think too much about these things. And this is a good way to look at it, thank you :) -Julian
Seriously, this is a very good video. Really made me think... Wow, I will have to digest that. But I think you are so right. It's a very sensible way of thinking about... the world. Wow...
okay, of all the videos that I have recently watched of hank and john, I really have no idea why this is the first comment. it is almost 4 am, I have been watching random videos for the last 4 hours. the thing I most regret about this is.. that I did not discover hank and john sooner. I have not had much love for the youtubes, and I blame this on the fact that I did not know that it could be awesome. now I find myself hopelessly addicted to learning more about the world, it's people, and DFTBA!
yea charities try to guilt crush you it doesn't work you only feel obligated to feel guilty. these kind of blogs renew my love toward you and John more intensely than the others you guys are good at making points and being reasonable and explaining things
Yes!!! Though I think sometimes we have to translate the compassion into the soul-crushing-ness of love, if only for a brief moment, so as to feel a sense of motivation to address the needs of those we don't directly care for.
I think compassion also covers the understanding that all these people that we don't love directly probably DO have people that love them that directly, and so by helping them, we are helping preserve that sort of love, even if it's not OUR love.
So, I completely agree with what you just said. I do think there are different kinds of love, though, and not all of them involve the deep, soul-crushing, soul-lifting kind of love you talked about. Whether it's called compassion, love (albeit a different kind), or just caring and empathy really doesn't matter. It's important. So thanks for the video... even though it's not necessarily your norm, it was good. You should make more. :-D
I've been on YT for awhile but this is the 1st video that truly derves the 5 star awsomeness. I genuinely agree with Hank. Nerdfighters are so jokes!!! Marlene :)
i'm digging the mario shirt! plus i chuckled tre muchly when you talked about never leaving your bed due to the crushing weight of the thoughts about all the impoverished cats
I love two things about Hank Green in this video. 1. I love how when he gets excited his voice gets higher and he waves his arms like Kermit the Frog does when he gets excited and 2. The Super Mario Piranha Plant Shirt Excellent video and point Hank =)
...another one in which Hank rambles. I am going to watch a John video now! That will make me feel much better (the thoughts with all the hungry cats...)
Reminds me of what I said when Michael Jackson died. If a friend of a friend dies I care more about how my friend feels than the person that died, since I didn't know them. I find death sad, but if a person like 300 miles away from me that I've never met dies I will not cry and act like it is the end of the world. People don't take love seriously enough.
I do often feel crushed by the weight of my caring for all cats the way I care about mine...you're right...it's a horrible way to live. I have taken your point on board :-)
Hey Hank! I wish we, as English speakers, had more than one word for the different kinds of love we feel for things or people. People who used to speak Latin have such words. In fact, they have 5 different kinds of love. Those kinds of love are as follows: Storge (store-jay): love for your family Philios(feel-ee-oh-ss): love through friendship Epithumia: Lust Eros (air-oh-ss): Romance Agape (ah-gahp-ay): Unconditional Love and/or Love without reason Those Latin speakers; beautiful, huh?
As Van Morrison sang in Madame George... "And the gloves to love to love the gloves...And the loves to love to love the love...The love's to love the love's to love the love's to love..."
This is now one of my favorites YT videos ever. On a different note, the Ad on the side says, "tubetape: everything greenscreen!" And for a good 30 seconds, I thought it was something for Hank and John. XD
I feel like the comment I have on this video has already been said: "Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that. Because what the world needs is people who come alive." - Howard Thurman
I didn't have my head phones in while listening to this. While Hank was talking about his love for his cat my mom said "That guy is weird" I told her "Yes, and he's awesome."
hmmm so i had to watch this video twice because the first time i was staring at your shirt and trying to see what it (if it said anything) beneath the nintendo pic. then i listened to it a second time and i think you make some solid points about love in this world and how it's viewed.
"We don't have an obligation to feel every tree being cut down like our cat just died!" Hahahahaha!! Oh I love this, and I love the arms flailing, and I love the Vlog Brothers... but not like how I love my cat... or my brother's cat ... but in a empathic, interconnected, and wholly wholesome kind of way... in a way that inspires me just a lil bit more to get out there and be a part of nurturing some awesomeness. ;-)
Nothing like silly faces to lighten the mood. I really enjoy your insight. Thanks much! P.S. I like your shirt. This is because A. it is green and B. I like the graphic of awesome.
Sometimes you need that soul crushing pain, because so many people won't have ANY compassion if they can't see the suffering right in front of them. I think you need to feel that hurt, then push it into action.
Yes. I agree. And although I have always thought that way, I think, you finally put it into words for me. So thanks. Because that was probably really hard to say, but I feel enlightened. *high five*
i think that we should care more and love less and that valentine's day was focused on caring instead of loving. Because around valentine's day the people who care for other people (like me) get left in the dust of the love.....or you could be my friend who cares about every person she sees like she knows them dearly. She'll start a random conversation with the cashier at a store and get so in-depth with them..*sigh* WHY CAN'T I GET A REPLY FROM YOU GUYS! I WANNA FEEL SPECIAL! *runs away crying*
What I mean is that compassion is part of love. If two things are mutually exclusive, that means that they cannot exist at the same time. I'm saying that you cannot have compassion without love. Therefore, they cannot be mutually exclusive.
I know this isn't the video where you ask for what the ads are, but I had to share. the ad below your face right now is an ad for adult videos (but it's written in spanish) Brilliant
in which Hank can't hug every cat.
You blew the final frontier of my mind. The barrier I've been trying ever so hard to break. I've never been able to put... this cluster of thoughts into words before. And you got it. Thank you. I have a new level of respect for you.

I keep getting ads for stuff with Hank in them and getting super excited.
I love listening to how much Hank's voice has changed over the years.
And his hair
One of my favourite vlogbrothers videos of all time.
This is probably the most intelligent thing I've ever heard.
I was honestly half expecting you start speaking in tongues the way you were going there. Heal me Hank! Heal the world with your wisdom!
Hank, I adore you.
really hank...
you dont know how much that has changed my way of thinking and you did that in 3 minutes...
thanks a lot keep it up.
DFTBA =D
We have an obligation as human beings to give a damn.
debatable.

Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Need to say that every mistake was because of autocorrect. It was still in the Dutch mode. 😣
Same
DFTBA and Whelmed Dutch modes, heb ik gelijk ?
That's the reason I'm subscribed to you, right here.
Your thoughtful videos always make my day.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts like this. Both of you.
He just loves cats...every kind of cat-
+fununcle I was wondering if he was sad for real or if he was mocking that dating site cat lady video...
I know this video is ten years old but I come back to it a lot because it’s such an important sentiment. I’m not gonna sum it up in my own words because Hank expresses it really well here. Thanks 2009 Hank!
well, i love you
Sam Sparrow love you too
I agree with what you said, and it sets a good baseline for how to act.

Hank, you are so passionate when you videoblog. You're so entertaining to watch, which really helps getting the message through and making it stick.
Wow watching this in 2020 hits HARD
Thanks Hank from 4 years ago. I really needed this today.

I've watched vlogbrothers videos for about 5 hours today. I'm not intending to stop. DFTBA
I've always understood the concept of love according to its classical definition: that is, willing the good of the other as other, separated from selfish interests.
This is fantastic Hank. It's something everyone should see.
Yes!!! Though I think sometimes we have to translate the compassion into the soul-crushing-ness of love, if only for a brief moment, so as to feel a sense of motivation to address the needs of those we don't directly care for.

Really good message man, if you had that kind of love for everyone you'd get burned out really quick.

You're so right! I already feel happier. Love ya Hank!
What a thoughtful and great insight into caring. Thank you.
I've been on YT for awhile but this is the 1st video that truly derves the 5 star awsomeness. I genuinely agree with Hank.
Nerdfighters are so jokes!!!
Marlene :)
When you help others, you can't help helping yourself.
i'm digging the mario shirt!
plus i chuckled tre muchly when you talked about never leaving your bed due to the crushing weight of the thoughts about all the impoverished cats
I love two things about Hank Green in this video.
1. I love how when he gets excited his voice gets higher and he waves his arms like Kermit the Frog does when he gets excited
and
2. The Super Mario Piranha Plant Shirt
Excellent video and point Hank =)
...another one in which Hank rambles. I am going to watch a John video now! That will make me feel much better (the thoughts with all the hungry cats...)
The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
I really needed this and the fact that I got here through searching for "hank green cat" makes me happy
this makes way to much sense.
I feel much better now. thanks, Hank
Yes Hank. I already came with that conclusion. I'm glad you think about the world the same way as I do.
I am among my people! When I was three, I lost my favorite blanket at a hotel, and I was sad from the fact that it would never be loved again.
This video makes me feel better every time I watch it.

Wow! I can't believe I've been watching VB for 7 years! One of my all time favs...
I didn't have my head phones in while listening to this. While Hank was talking about his love for his cat my mom said "That guy is weird" I told her "Yes, and he's awesome."
Hank. The way you think, is the way that I think. You're so awesome! I was JUST talking about that the other day with someone.
Without personal detachment, compassion can be overwhelming.
thank you for making me think hank...seriously, i feel much more content and aware after watching this video...you're freaking amazing X)
hmmm so i had to watch this video twice because the first time i was staring at your shirt and trying to see what it (if it said anything) beneath the nintendo pic.
then i listened to it a second time and i think you make some solid points about love in this world and how it's viewed.
three things:
one) bravo, Hank, bravo
two) good example of how fast you can talk
three)chewy's got my vote!
"We don't have an obligation to feel every tree being cut down like our cat just died!" Hahahahaha!! Oh I love this, and I love the arms flailing, and I love the Vlog Brothers... but not like how I love my cat... or my brother's cat ... but in a empathic, interconnected, and wholly wholesome kind of way... in a way that inspires me just a lil bit more to get out there and be a part of nurturing some awesomeness. ;-)
you have no idea how much i relate to this. thank you.
Love is the most powerful emotion.
Thanks, Hank. I needed this talk.
Finally! Someone else gets this now. I can't seem to make anyone else understand this matter at all.
Gosh, Hank, you're so wise.
hank your videos make me happy in knowing i'm not the only person that talks uber fast!!!
DFTBA =]
Yes.
I know this isn't the video where you ask for what the ads are, but I had to share.
the ad below your face right now is an ad for adult videos (but it's written in spanish)
Brilliant
Exactly. Thank you Hank. THANK YOU
This needs to be discussed more often, on and off the Internet.
we're all so connected, i desperately wish we knew it
