    Hey Melinda, you may have a new cleaning video already, but I just purchased the new HumminGuru ultrasonic cleaning machine a couple weeks back and it does an amazing job! Put new, used, any album in for 5 minutes of cleaning and 5 minutes for drying. You just have to pour the distilled water with the 2 to 3 drops added of the HumminGuru cleaning solution that you pay extra for each time you clean a record. The water drains each time so that the internal vacuum can do its job! Have washed 40 or so albums already, and I notice a huge difference in sound quality. Hope your move is nearly completed, love all your videos!❤❤

    I have a Humming Guru and as my records have been in storage for several years they all need cleaning. As a method I have two baths, one I fill with distilled water and a single drop of Ilford Photoflow and put it on the full wash and dry cycle. I then use the second bath I fill with only distilled water and again put the record, that has just been through the photoflow wash cycle, through a full cycle again. A long winded method, but it works. The only downside is that you can only do about six records before it get too hot, well hotter than I would like.

    Sometimes, there are pops and clicks that are pressed into every record in a pressing. Back in the day, I would return a record for excessive pops only to find that the replacement had exactly the same pops and clicks in exactly the same place. During the late 70's and early 80's, this was not a rarity. And then there was warping especially as they reduced the vinyl thickness and shrink wrap would do a number on the thin vinyl while sealed.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree. Vinyl is an imperfect format. Pops and clicks are part of the territory. Warps on new records is a pet peeve of mine. The shrink wrap is too tight on some records. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

    First I use a wet vacuum clean then into an ultrasonic cleaner, works great, I personally don't like pushing dirt into the grooves but prefer to vac it out, Good if your system works for you, I tried it and was never happy with the process or the sound after.

    I updated my lp cleaning with a Vevor ultrasonic cleaner that cost me $160 delivered. Ive cleaned about 150 lps and the improvements are outstanding. I preclean with tergitol or G2 and a brush. Then I place 2 lps in us tank with only distilled water for about 9 minutes at about 90 degrees. Then I vacuum each side about 4 or 5 turns and let dry in lp rack provided. Finally I give a light polish with a clean velvet brush and put the lp in a new inner sleeve. I mark the outer sleeve with a marker to show that the lp has been cleaned. Thanks Melinda.

    Great video! A few years ago you did a video on a DIY spinning disc to wash the record along with the vinyl vacuum. It took me a few times to get the hang of it but I still use that method.
    So a few months ago I bought a few 60’s vinyl records off an auction on Whatnot. I was shocked on how gross the records were! They didn’t even look that dirty! So now I wash every used LP I bring into my home.

    Cleaning records. I use a knosti and a throw away sponge + washingmachine detergent for wool. After the procedure i rinse it with tapwater using the showerhead, most water drips from the record. To dry i use soft toiletpaper with the record laying on a newspaper. Final step is a treatment with an anti-static brush. Endresult is good.

    I usually purchase vinyl from AMAZON and occasionally DISCOGS so I emailed them to recommend a good cleaner and they shipped a Promo version of BIG FUDGE Cleaning System and found it superior to any other brand - I go back to the Stone Age of record collecting so I have many dirty records and there's nothing like a deep cleaned one blasting from speakers while I sit there so glad I didn't replace that dirty record with a $100 reissue-it only had 3 good songs -so again I thank you Melinda for informing us on the many aspects of record collecting - that T-Shirt is so cute on you!❤

    Hello Melinda. For cleaning records I use a mixture of Triton X100, Isopropanol and water. I spray the mixture on the record and use the soft side of a Scotch-Brite/3M sponge and dry with a soft cloth. If there's IGD, I repeat the process and dry with a microfiber cloth (this one leaves pieces that will get stuck into the stylus, but eventually all will be gone and some can be removed with the carbon fiber brush). I've had wonderful results, but I'm willing to try other methods as well. Thanks for the video.

    It's more valuable to have a known and trusted person demonstrating a product than watching a company-prepared video. Who knows what they have cut out of their videos?
    A record-cleaning product, like this one, the concept started in the 1970's with the Disc Washer system. Groove Washer has more than one-upped it.
    I used the Disc Washer system for years before I went upscale with an automated record cleaning system.
    There was a record store in my area which would clean every used record a person bought from them(even 45's) on a top Nitty Gritty. The records would look great, but when I got them home and played them, it sounded like the stylus was playing through a debris field. Sometimes I would have to clean the records up to 3 times to get rid of all the noise. After that happening a few times, I wouldn't let him clean records for me. He couldn't understand why. After wiping the dust off, usually one cleaning with the Record Washer would do the job! I always put the record on the TT to clean it(at the TT's lowest speed). The only records that I would clean on a flat counter top, placing the record on a towel, were 78's or really dirty records. A couple of drops of Dawn dishwashing detergent in a bowl of warm water, did the trick. Rinsing with clean water on a clean sponge, then wiping the record off with a clean towel finished it off.
    I usually only buy cleaner concentrate as I can provide my own distilled water, to save a bundle with all the many, many records I am always cleaning.
    I have been curious about the Pro-Ject RCM and it looks pretty good. I would have definitely bought one if I hadn't already bought my VPI HW-17 a few years before the Pro-Ject RCM came out.
    I am curious about the ultrasonic RCM's now. Who knows, now that you are doing record-cleaning videos, companies will send you their record cleaning products!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do feel like I have a great cleaning system now with the GrooveWasher products and this vacuuming machine. Like you, I am curious about ultrasonic machines but not enough to spend the money at this time. I like my cleaning method and it's working very well for me. My machine is the Project machine. I received it as a Christmas present right before ultrasonic cleaners had affordable alternatives. Thank you and have a great day.

    • @automatedelectronics6062
      @automatedelectronics6062 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MelindaMurphy It was probably a scam, but I invested in a company last Fall which was coming out with a really affordable Ultrasonic cleaner. Their last excuse communication was back in April. We haven't heard anything since and have not received our machines. A company on Facebook advertises all these different projects and helps them get backers. This particular company has received several times the amount they were requesting. It seems that they took our money and ran!
      There are multiple sellers on eBay selling devices to turn a regular ultrasonic cleaning tub into and ultrasonic record cleaner. That is a cheap way of putting together an ultrasonic record cleaner!

    Careful there Melinda, you were sounding like me in your explanation of why you like to clean records. :) ha ha! As I think I had mentioned to you before, I too find it therapeutic. Careful, people might start thinking there is something wrong with you. LOL!
    I see you finally got a vacuum RCM, well done! It looks like a Pro-Ject one from what I could tell, good choice! With the number of records you have, you needed one long ago! Part of the reason I got mine when I did was not only did I have over 200 records, but I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from manual cleaning, so getting a vacuum RCM saved me from further injury.
    I also notice that you are using the machine correctly for the most part, good on you! For example, I noticed you do only one to two revolutions when vacuuming. That is perfect, you don't want to go more than that because you will put a huge static charge on the record! One to two revolutions is enough and just below the point of building a static charge. I'm the same way, after I vacuum I got around the edges and check with a microfiber lint free cloth.
    I personally have some reservations about the Groove Washer fluid. I don't like that they do not state what is in it. I don't think it is harmful in any way, but I suspect that at least the G3 fluid leaves behind residue. When you are finished with the Groove Washer fluid, let me know and I will recommend what I use that is the best on the market to date and I also know what is in it. (I got a tour of sorts in how it is made by the manufacture of it. I was shown everything but the measurements/ratios).
    I do not recommend homebrews! I experimented with a few of those. I also have tested several record cleaning fluids on the market during my study and most are NOT recommendable!
    When you run out of the "special water" from Groove Washer, distilled water is excellent and just as pure if not more so.
    Yes, ultrasonic is the ultimate in record cleaning, but whether it is required or not is up to you. When it comes to ultrasonic record cleaning machines and such, you need to be cautious there, just like with cleaning fluids. I know of only one machine currently, that I would be comfortable recommending. There is a duplicate machine on the market to it, but the transport system is all wrong. As for the rest of the ultrasonic machines out there, they are either too expensive or worse, not really ultrasonic machines at all or are of poor design.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you foe the kind and helpful comments. I think I read on the manual or saw on a video not to do more that two rotations with the vacuum. 🤗
      As far as the G3, it has a higher concentrate of the cleaning solvent In it and it does require a rinse so that any residue gets rinsed away.
      I don't know very much about ultrasonic machines but they are very popular and from what I hear work very well. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️

    As a record collector/seller for the better part of fifty years I still clean my records the same way I've done for all these years: Just a spritz of Windex and a medical grade wipe. It's great for surface cleaning and removes fingerprints and light marks. I know some vinyl enthusiasts may cringe but we all have our own way of cleaning our vinyl. Some folks even go to the extreme of slathering wood glue on the surface! It sounds messy, time consuming, and expensive. At the end of the day whatever works for you. Thanks Melinda for this post. The vinyl vacuum machine is definitely on my wish list! But until then I'm pretty happy with my 'Spin Clean' discwasher. The yellow plastic basin really shows how much dirt is coming off those thrift store records. Dust on vinyl is just a fact of life! Yet another testimonial for Groovewasher products...I really need to purchase their stuff and give it a try, everyone seems very happy with it. I also love how they patterned their onestep set up like the old Discwasher systems of the 70s and 80s. I would love to get a vacuum cleaner but they are so darn expensive. I have the groove washer and have a lot of issues getting excessive surface noise after using the G2 cleaning solution. I usually have to rinse with distilled water many times to get the solution off the vinyl. I tried cleaning my brushes more regularly and seems to help a bit, but I get really nervous cleaning brand new records because usually they more noisy after cleaning then they were before. I recently picked up the vinyl vac as well but my shop vac is too large to use with it, so ill have to pick up a smaller shop vac in the future.

It is so much fun to chill with some wine, spin some records and have a cleaning session. The Humminguru works well, but it is a set-it-and-forget-it which is a great thing. This is a much more advanced video on cleaning records than what you've done in the past. ❤ It reflects how you've become a seasoned audiophile. 👍👍👍 Cleaning records can be a chore, so how I clean a record depends on the title. I won't play a dirty record on my turntable no matter what, but I will play new records without cleaning them if they're not dusty. At a minimum, I will use a dilute solution of isopropyl alcohol mixed with ultra purified water and a microfiber cloth to wipe the record down. I then play the record. If it's worth further cleaning, then I always use the wet/vac method with my VPI RCM. I use a home made solution that I make to a chemist's standards. I have a degree in chemistry and have worked as an analytical chemist. I go to great lengths to ensure purity of my home made solutions and cleanliness throughout the cleaning process that most people can't imagine, and my solutions exceed the quality of manufactured vinyl cleaning solutions. 🤔 Demagnetization is another thing I do after a wet/vac cleaning for some records. Hopefully, someday you'll do a video on record restoration beyond cleaning. There are some great products that have stood the test of time to improve not so great records and to preserve records from stylus wear.

      I agree. I tried cleaning a few new records that already sounded good & heard no difference. I have learned so much about record cleaning here, & from the comments! Thanks! Now I am talking about bands that were great, that went downhill. Maybe Belinda will have a video pn bands going downhill. Chicago used to be as big as Santana Abraxas! Almost everyone had Chicago records. So, years ago I bought a Chicago album on cd & couldnt stand it, I thought that the cd was the reason iy sounded bad, but most people that died like Chicago's old records, now dont like Chicago, even on the records. I just now googled it. Now hardly anyone listens to Chicago. I really believe that people have gotten tired of listening to bright horns. I think after the Beatles quit, almost all music went downhill. As a kid I thought there would never be as good of music as the Beatles, i thought that before the Beatles quit. And the Beatles were the only pop band that I ever liked. I am surprised that George Harrison stayed with the Beatles, because they wouldnt let Harrison write much. My opinion is Harrison was the star of the Band. I yjink the Beatles killed jazz off. About the same time, the black blues guitarists disappeared, & I dont understand that. Everything changed after 1971, my opinion Clapton, Steve Miller, Page. & definately Joe Walsh wasnt as good.

      that is a very kind and diplomatic reply. Most people interested in vinyl care would point out that the chemicals in glass cleaner attack the plasticizers in the vinyl, and should be avoided.
      I wouldn''t want someone seeking knowledge to think glass cleaner is generally accepted as the way to go. that it works to this one person's satisfaction is fine for them, but goes against conventional record care, and any known chemistry applied to record care. @@MelindaMurphy

    I'd likely buy a snow capped mountain on a Caribbean island from you!
    All kidding aside, I'll definitely consider G2 on my next internet purchase.

    Very nice tutorial. Thank You.
    I have my parents collection of LPs from before vinyl when they were made from shellac.
    How would you suggest cleaning them? They are very fragile.
    Just an after thought, anyone remember the old commercials for record cleaners from ronco?

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a good question. I may have to consult with the GrooveWasher team and ask them about cleaning 78's with their product. I wouldn't want to tell you the wrong answer.
      I do remember those old Ronco commercials. I also remember Slim Whitman album commercials while watching The Brady Bunch. 🤗 Thank you and take care.

    By coincidence I just cleaned two new records on my project vacuum cleaner right before watching your video.
    As you say you definitely need to clean new records before first play even if they look clean at the very least it gets rid of the static charge which is a magnet for dust and of course if they come with the dreaded paper sleeve replace with an anti static sleeve. Give 'em a brush before each play play and you shouldn't need to vacuum or wet clean ever again.
    I can't say I actually enjoy the cleaning process though just a necessary pain in the butt ritual that needs to be done.

    I'm not sure I'm with you on the "enjoy" part of cleaning records (it's kind of like a woodworker saying they enjoy sanding), but it's definitely a necessary part of being a vinyl enthusiast. Vinyl is not nearly as fragile as some people think, and can hold up to a lot, but it does get dirty, and when it's dirty it just sounds bad. People complain about the cracks and pops, but a good bit of the time it's just a dirty record. As for cleaning, I use ultrasonic, and it's hands down the best method I've ever used. But it's not the quickest. Or the quietest. Or the cheapest. There are lots of products and methods out there, as you demonstrate, and it's just important to make cleaning a regular part of your routine.

      I agree. The most important thing to take away from this is to clean our records. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

    I have a carbon fiber brush I bought in 1984. Made by Oracle (the turntable company from Canada) it came with 40,000 carbon fiber bristles. I think it has lost maybe a 100 of them in the last 39 years. It does an excellent job of cleaning dust from the record. I always use it right as I'm cueing up an album.

    Are use a spin clean on my vinyl, and it seems to do a pretty good job. It’s definitely much more of in manual process, but it seem to do the trick.

      @@MelindaMurphy Its not too bad! I can clean a record in about 3 minutes once I've got everything setup. I then give them a quick dry with a micro fiber towel and let them finish up in the dish drainer. I am amazed at the difference cleaning records can make!

    I used Dishwasher for 30+ years then the price of the cleaning solution approached the price of gold several years ago. So I switched to GrooveWasher. I use G2 on all records except for some of my older LPs (I brought my first album in 1961), then I'll use G3. All by hand, I refuse to spend an outrageous sum of money to clean my records and the GrooveWasher products work well. I too, highly recommend the product. Now I need to buy those coasters.

      @MelindaMurphy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The coasters are very cool. I am with you on the GrooveWasher products. I love that the G2 is a one step process and it does an excellent job. When I spray the fluid, it goes directly into the grooves. 🤗♥️ Thank you so much for sharing. It's very helpful to hear from someone else that uses it. Take care.

      The owner of GrooveWasher's family was immersed in the Discwasher products back in the day. I'm sure some of their products were inspired by them. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
