OT IS GOAT. Once it clicks, the sampling possibilities are endless. Especially when you dig into the buffer and do sequenced cross-sampling of buffers and stuff. Like recording an input based on a sequence, and using that on another track as a sample in real time and playing it in a different pitch. There simply is nothing like the OT. Though its reverb, delay etc don't sound too great. Wish there was an OT with some of the UI and the FX of the Digis. :D
It’s cool to get an MPC-head’s perspective on the Octa. I’m the other way - I started with the Digitakt and Octa and honestly that pair still makes up 90% of my music. I got an MPC Live2 a few years back and I love it for a lot of things, but it will never replace my Octa. The Octa just has a certain old school sound that very unique to Elektron that I love.
Love Elektrons for its flexible sound design functionality. You can mangling sounds over and over. You never know how simple sound can be mutated at the end. Not speaking about OT but DT/DN/ST are so good as portable machines 🔥
Great video Marlow! I have the MPC One & the Octatrack as well. Likely many ways to set up these devices - Can you share how you do your midi & usb settings in both units? May be helpful for us that are learning..
Have you watched JonmakesBeats? He's another guy that works wonders with the Octatrack. Mine has been a display piece so far but I'm still excited with it's potential.
Yeah I watch his channel all the time. The octa needs time and patience to get to know it. I am still struggling with it but I know I'll eventually master it.
ive had mine for a few years now, i never really figured it out beyond basic looping or what i want to do with it but i somehow know not to sell it because you can tell its just quality.
The send/return capabilities and cross fader on the OT do make it an interesting effects box, but, since you are already an MPC guy, not sure why the MIDI sequencer is a compelling use case.
Elektron sequencers allow you to do quite a few things an MPC can't, such as probability, conditional trigs (aka steps), per track length and scaling, etc. Another powerful feature the MPC can't match are the number of LFOs per MIDI track - the Octatrack allows you to use 3 LFOs. Modulation for days...
I recently broke my ankle and so I’m not able to be on my MPC X but I pulled out the Octatrack to make beats in bed but the Octatrack will frustrate the hell out of you but I would hate to sell it. This is my 2nd Octatrack….. and for simple sample based boom bap beats, it’s easy to make 4 or 8 bar loops and use the slider to transition or switch up the sound…. Plus the pattern button is like changing sequences on the MPC….. One thing I noticed when using the Octatrack vs the MPC is the fact that, I don’t get all technical when creating beats like I do with the MPC…. I do prefer the MPC fx over the Octatrack, also the easy way to explode tracks on the MPC for mixing in a DAW…. But there is a way to save your tracks on the Octatrack as waves and export the waves, but I like running some of the Octatrack tracks thru external fx, and then into my SP303
haha i am also in the group that got a octatrack not really for its purpose. when i got mine (about 2019) i was looking for a guitar looper where i could pre determine the loop length prior to recording and just hit "go" and it would close the loop without me needing to hit another button and loop back on iteself. i first bought a digitakt to sample guitars but needing to record, save, trim, name, before you could loop the sample just wasn't that great, so on came the octatrack but one things for sure, i miss my digitakt and wish i never sold it
My mpc one fried and can't be repair for less the price of a second unit...So i've started to use the octatrack again. I'm not satisfied by the all package. Many tools, effects and process are too climsy for my taste...So i prepare my samples to do less inside the OT... but it is a fun tool to play with especially for live situations...I wish elektron had kept more the Machinedrum philosophy
I got an Octatrack last year. I use it for effects and mangling samples mostly. It’s a good pair with my MPC X SE but will probably be years before I master it 😂
I'm on my second MPC and it's a good tool, but Elektron is next up for me. There's just certain things the MPC lacks and vice versa. I have been really interested in the Octatrack, but I think I'm gonna go with the Digitakt II even though it doesn't have manual slicing (which is absurd haha).
@@mpchead Yeah man I agree that would be great. The One Plus covers a lot of ground for me, but aside from making hip-hop I also do faster, more experimental electronic and it would be dope if MPC was more geared to handle that. But hey, each tool is suited for its intended use. Can't complain too much haha.
@@mpchead I'm looking to start with the very basics, like setting up the device and understanding its layout and primary functions. I've tried reading the manual and watching some videos, but I'm still struggling to understand how it all falls into place. Maybe I'm stupid but I still want to learn. I'd appreciate tips on how to start sampling, sequencing, and creating patterns etc. Many thanks.
Octatrack is a “Dynamic Performance Sampler” … not a ‘Production Sampler’ … it says so on the box … I think that’s key to understanding what it is (but I’ve never used one, so what would I know, lol …) I can read, though … 😉
Definitely not worth it for the effects alone. Only 2 FX per track unless you use a neighbor track… then 4 FX… or add another neighbor track for 6 FX. Fader is obviously awesome. Great sequencer but there are better sequencers these days… OXI One for starters. But yeah, it’s both those things in one. Either way, I love the OT and yeah, if you love it too and got the cash… have fun! For those wanting one, I don’t agree with the difficulty factor. Live looping confuses me but also, you don’t need to know every aspect of this machine. Learn the ones that appeal to you and your workflow. I’m not a looper therefore I didn’t take the time with it. If I decided I wanted to live loop, no biggie, I’ll pay more attention.

That was a beautiful ambient little sequence, didn’t know u had that in your bag lmao hell yeah
This is very interesting . Thanks for your insights on the octatrack.
Awesome video bro! Octatrack is life🔥
Thx for sharing as pairing the Octa and MPC are a match made in heaven!!

the octa definitely has a sound that I like too.

I love the OT more than my mpc live 2
I would watch a video of you on the OT with the Rhodes, sending samples from Tascam and MPC, live jams, the whole shabang…

Octatrack hands down the best sampler
Said noone who owns a modern mpc
Or an old one......
Nope, absolutely not. Its definitely the most awkward sampler to sample with though. 🤣

@@Slacquerr the mpc can do "everything" the octa can, it is only down to workflow, the approach to quickly changing steps and automation.
