  • Bath University student Jacob Hardy, from Cheltenham, has won a Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Young Achiever Award for the quality of his work during a placement year in industry.
Jacob, who is studying for an MEng degree, won the Industrial Placement Award for his performance as a Trainee Site Engineer while working with Balfour Beatty Vinci in Coventry.
He worked on two main projects, helping to construct a concrete shell for a 40m diameter LNG tank at the Isle of Grain LNG terminal in Kent, and deliver a viaduct substructure and enabling works as part of HS2 near Coventry. Both projects came with a range of challenges and significant responsibilities.
Speaking at the presentation event at The Grand Hotel in Torquay, Phil Ramsden, Chair, CECA South West, said: “Jacob has made a fantastic start to his career in civil engineering construction and there is little doubt that a bright future awaits him.
“Civil engineering construction is vital to national and regional infrastructure investment in transport, energy, coastal protection and more, and central to our transition to a low carbon economy. This industry presents huge opportunities for people across a broad spectrum of roles - and it’s essential that we attract talented individuals, whether they are university, college and school leavers or people looking for a change of career, if we are to build a prosperous and sustainable future.”
The CECA South West Young Achiever Awards are presented annually in recognition of exceptional performance, with each winner receiving a trophy and cheque for £500
