I agree. I like to say "shop with my eyes" so you can just look at an item, appreciate it for a minute and then walk away. You don't need to physically possess it.
Minimalism has ruined shopping for me. I immediately flash forward to a vision of my future self needing to declutter it- making the decision to remove it, and taking action. It feels so heavy to buy anything, knowing it will one day leave.
I am a 64+ old lady from Kolkata, INDIA. I belong to a middle class family. Now i hv retired from services. I watch all ur vdos. Trying to follow ur advise on minimalism. It is helping me greatly.
Joshua, Wow! Awesome quote. I'm not a hoarder, but I've felt like it over the past 5 wks as I've decluttered out my sewing / craft room. I'm shocked & amazed at all I had crammed in a tiny 9'x9' room for the past 25 yrs. It was hard at 1st to let some things go, but after I got 1/2 way through it, I started getting rid of more & more. Now that the room has been decluttered, cleaned & painted, I am going to go through everything again before it comes back into my room. Thank you for your videos. They sure do help. 😊
I am also a quilter and let go off fabric that I had had for probably more than 10 years, and half of my quilts as being stored in closet doesn’t serve anyone. It is so liberating to now just have a few projects and a small amount of beautiful fabric 😊
The joy of not wanting things is a powerful feeling and i realy love it. The less i own the more free i feel. When i have to move for some reason it’s easy.
I am actually that way - for about a year now hubs asks me to go with him to thrift stores and there is just nothing I want....and it really does feel great to be so contented with my life as it is....♥
This is SO valuable! We went to IKEA for the first time last week for my daughter's birthday wish. I was overwhelmed with the amount of stuff that store contains. We got out of there by spending only $15.00 - new cutting boards and stirring spoons to replace some worn out ones and a lint roller to get the dog's hair off the couch at the Airbnb. What a freeing feeling and sense of gratefulness to know that I don't need 99.8% of this! Thankful for your wisdom Joshua!
Very interesting quote, my thoughts exactly when i go to stores, "What beautiful things, yet, they can remain here because I don't need nor desire them, so I will enjoy them right now."
Joshua, you have described me and my life. It takes a transition period to change your mindset but when you do, it is so liberating. I have joy in not wanting things and it is so freeing .
I especially enjoy doing this during the Holidays. I love walking around the city and seeing all the decorations, trinkets and products. It's wonderful that I don't need to buy them, bring them home, store them, take care of them. And the best part is: without any effort of my own they'll still be there next year and even updated. 😊
I have lived that way for years: not wanting, not craving and not bending over from the dumb pressure from adverticement, is a liberation beyond words. Life on our precious Earth is about so much more ❤
Thank you Joshua for the reminder that we can do with less. All we need is God's Grace, Food , Shelter & clothing. If you really put your mind to it, we don't need lots of fancy things & lots of furniture. Just enough to keep us comfortable, that is ENOUGH 🥰 God bless
I love my garden looking beautiful, flowers, vegetables and fruit trees. I buy a lot from plant nurseries… then Bunnings… fixing my home, repainting. Just bought a sauna… health benefits…
This is me now! I needed toothbrushes and the only place I could find the ones I like physically in town without ordering them was at TJ Maxx of all places. I went in there to get them. I haven’t been in there in a long time but wow, how different I felt. I didn’t want anything (except the toothbrushes that they no longer have). The place looked like a hoarder’s paradise. It’s like in the Bible where Jesus talks of giving sight to the blind. Since embracing minimalism several years ago it’s Iike I now have sight to see and comprehend all the stuff that I DON’T need and now don’t even want anymore. It’s unbelievably freeing ❤
Yes, I hadn’t been in those stores for awhile and it’s pure shock to the senses. Agree. And -- I don’t know if the heads of those stores that are stuffed to the gills know this or not but ... for me, it’s a total, complete, 100% turn-off to buy anything in there. They are actually losing my money by putting all that stuff in front of me. Little temptation there. I walk in, am visually overwhelmed by the overabundance of merchandise and products in there, am quickly repulsed by the demand to buy and consume and, more often than not, I walk right out. 😞 Conversely, if there were just a few things out, with more merchandise like it kept in the back away from me, I would be far more inclined to be pulled into it and think “I want to get this today due to its ‘preciousness’ ‘rarity’ and ‘scarcity.’ There isn’t much of it here so it’s so appealing to me. It’s not ‘junk.’” But with everything in my face from floor to ceiling, I have very little incentive to submit to that overstimulation and overconsumption. There’re plenty more where that came from. I walk out knowing I don’t need that. I suppose the sales strategy works for others. 😶
Yes! For many years I have enjoyed what the simple pleasures in life bring me! But this has to be the best of all, no doubt! It is so freeing, and enjoyable to actually not want anything.I am giddy walking through a store or shop that once would have drawn me in to buy things and now I just enjoy looking, and rejoicing in the fact that I really and truly do not wish to purchase any of it! What a celebration! I have everything I want and need. I have my family, I have my friends, I have a comfortable enough home, life is great! I no longer try to impress anyone, or keep up with anyone. ❤
I am so happy to realise that I too had this feeling of "Thank God I don't have/want all this anymore." I shifted to a bigger accommodation recently and before shifting I decluttered to get rid of about 30%of my possession. I have a minimalist decor now with so much clear empty walls and floor space. When I visited a new neighbor and found that her apartment was overloaded with beautiful decors and furniture, I failed to appreciate the beauty of each item. I felt claustrophobic.... I thanked myself to have been inspired by you.
I feel like this is the level of minimalism that's been the hardest to finally get to. I've been a pro at decluttering for the past 13 years, but it's always seemed like a never ending cycle because stuff would still creep in. Finally this year I feel like I've reached a point where I'm serious about not buying stuff. Even little stuff. This is still a struggle with a lot of minimalists I feel like, but to reach that point feels really amazing. Funny that you posted this video around the same time I reached this point.
Oh my gosh, I love this. I watch the Stanley cup craze in amazement and all I can think is thank goodness 10 of them won’t be showing up In my house!! I wouldn’t even want one!
Iam so thankful to Joshua for his video that has given me so much motivation for being a minimalist. I have been in this journey for the last one year. My house and my life is so much better than before. ❤
Excellent story. The way it resonated with me today was not necessarily with things, but with goals. The world is constantly telling us we need to excel in ALL things: be in perfect shape, have a perfect home, “glow up”, etc. If they can get us to want to be perfect in all these ways, think of the marketing potential! I’m sick of wanting so much. Time to pick the goals that ACTUALLY matter with me and choose “good enough” with the rest.
❤ I love the freedom feeling now, on a Saturday, to purely go out walking in nature and thinking, I do not need to buy anything today, there isn’t anything I need 🙏
Inspiring video, as always. I have embraced JOMO (the Joy of Missing Out) and this rejoicing over all the things I don't want is a parallel to that. It is freeing and clears a path to greater experiences and growth. Thanks for your good work, Joshua!
Hi Marissa, Love this! My thoughts on the subject are: With minimalism, You have more money, less to do on the house and more time with family. I feel the people who comment negatively are people that possibly (not all) are just justifying their inability to control themselves by wanting more, every appliance, spending money, leaning on the importance of material things and perhaps their houses are too hard to declutter and they don't know where to start. Joshua Becker just did a video recently, where he said one of his favourite sayings is: "My heart rejoices at the sight of all the things I do not need". I also saw one that resonated with me recently: "I feel like I should want more, but I don't. I want less. Less stuff, less rushing, less stress, less noise. I want simplicity". I absolutely love going shopping now and just looking, no need to buy anything, just look. Love Jo from Australia xxx
Look at an item in your house. Any item. And even when you're out shopping look at that item before you bring it in the house. Say to yourself would I buy it again. That has helped me in tremendous amount of ways because it makes you think Totally differently. So if I go into a clothing store and I don't know whether I want that item or not.I'm humming and hahing i stop and say.. Could I buy this dress again 😮 For me. It hit a part of my brain so deep in my psyche. So to speak. That that I have not purchased much since I started thinking That way. I was in a clothing store and this woman was saying to her friend.I don't know if it looks good on me.I don't know, I'm indecisive and they were kind of talking back-and-forth.And debating. Then I said to the woman.Ask yourself if you would buy that dress again. And then she said oh my goodness. That's a weird way of looking at it, but you're right.No.I would not buy this dress again and soshi immediately put it back on the rack. Now that may not work for everybody but it works for me. My friend from California said to me.Why are you buying things that you're gon to end up throwing out in the first place. Cause I would buy something and then later throw it out. And I think it was because when I was younger I was denied so much. Always felt Unworthy. So I would go buy things that I didn't really want just to feel the comfort of having it but then it's gone and I say to myself that was a stupid thing to do. Lol We all have a right to buy whatever we are worthy. But we have to be mof a critical thinker. I always feel now that if you have an excess of something, it indicates that there is an imbalance. In your life. Are you lonely? Are you suffering from some emotional trauma that you haven't dealt with? There's so many reasons why we have an imbalance in our life but buying stuff will not correct that. It just makes you procrastinate and not look at the real problems that are going inside your family or inside of you.
Great video! 👏🏻 By learning from you over time, I now find myself living in this joyful place. I was in a shop on Thursday and left with the one thing I needed, I felt that joy of knowing that I did not want anything else; once upon a time, I’d have thought, "what else can I buy while I’m here?" A gift indeed! Easter blessings to you and your family Joshua. 🙏😊
This is the essence. Thank you. I think I'm going to play this as soon as I tend to fall into the consumerism trap again. One of my (I know) weaker willpower times is when change occurs. Like now, it has become spring! And I love the bright colours in clothing that comes with it. And yes, there was an item in my cart. However, I know I don't want to experience decision fatique, or having to do more laundry as my inventory would grow, when I'd had put so much effort in owning less. I want to stick to my values. I saw this clip and I thought, YES! Thank you for getting me back on track again. And I deleted the item in my cart.🙏 I feel relieved.
I had a revelation recently. I received an email from Audible about a sale involving about 700 titles. I looked at all the titles on sale and could find only 3 that even interested me. None excited me. Then it dawned on me that if I purchased just one title for $5 and then never read it. It would be the same as throwing $5 away in the trash. I have hundreds of books I have not read and DVDs I have not watched that are just sitting on the shelf. Enough to last me 5 years or more. I am at a place where I do not want to buy anything that is not a necessity as it would be the same as throwing money away. Along with the stress both physical and mental of additional possessions. I concluded I am better off using up what I already own.
Thanks for your inspiring videos. I also started living minimalistic style almost two years. It gives much freedom, true joy and peaceful mind. Iam happy about living this way.
Thank you for this inspiring video. Watching it made me realize that I already do this. I can walk through life seeing beautiful objects or clothing pieces without wanting to buy them myself. That’s indeed wonderful. When I go shopping, I do that with a plan. I do it for something I really need and when I say ‘Oh, I like that!’ my mom will sometimes say I can have it if I want and has to get used to me saying: ‘That’s really sweet, but I love this without wanting it.’ She’ll buy things easier than I do and has to get used to my mindset. She’s learning too though ❤
You just cannot, but challenge our thought process to minimalism on an ongoing basis. It is truly inspiring and thought provoking for more and more actions. Highly appreciate your videos -Thank you Joshua 🙏
I have a big problem with collecting items . It all began when I was 5 years old . I began collecting American Civil War cards. I had the full set , all 500 of them. I progressed onto soccer cards, tv show cards , Olympic souvenir medals. All before I was 12 years old . Then I began collecting LPs and cassettes usually following “family trees” of groups . CDs came out in the mid eighties. I began collecting the cd versions of my lps. Since the advent of digital music, I have gigabyte upon gigabyte of music, media players and hard drives. Add to that 3 (had 6)acoustic guitars, 5 watches(had 10), 6 vintage razors(had 12)5 fountain pens ( had 11) I am slowly but surely reducing all these collections using the wants v needs idea ,knowing that when I’m gone they will probably all end up in a trash can. I think my downfall are “best of “ videos and ratings and opinions of other people. I eventually hope to be like the person referred to in the video. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks
I do , ans feel relieved seeing other people stressing about their society Position and trying to get more (car, property...) and i am immensly happy i dont have that need to impress the rest
First. Finally i can thanx you for all your wonderful vidros:i appreciate you so much,i consider you a wonderful father and husband too.I wish you and your family a serene Easter!a hug from Sicily,Italy
I traveled some when I was younger. There is really so much to see. At some point you realize you could never take it all home with you. I was pretty bad tho about wanting to snap a picture of almost everyone and everything tho. 😅😅 Like the Russia/Kiev trip for one. I had to negotiate buying more film from one of my fellow travelers. Lol. It has only been recently (decades later lol) that I finally sorted through all those pics and winnowed them down, organized them and gave them their own little album section. Prob was a rip off back in the day tho. They had you thinking that you had to have duplicates of everything. They’re kinda like place mats tho. You just don’t need them.
Visualize doers versus non-doers. I agree less can be more, however when society places value on your ability to produce distributable wealth we should not simply turn our backs on the effort required to enrich our communities. Consider the joy of not having to worry about starving and desperate people in your area. The Bible says faith without action is dead. Lead by example so that others may want a better life. God bless everyone!
It DOES confuse people. I hosted a small (10 person) meeting at my house. One participant looked around the space a little and asked-:' Have you just moved in?' LOL I had lived in the house about 8 years at that point. I try to keep meaningful and/or beautiful things, not random things. I also had a friend for a few years before he moved away, one evening after dinner he said- 'You need more ...stuff". It was funny. I was not offended in either case. So, maybe you CAN take the concept too far.
They were trying to tell you that your house does not feel very homely. Most minimalist houses look dreadfully cold and uninviting and that's a fact. They lack any warmth (and no, no bright wall paint will fix that). Hosting more than an extra 1-2 people must be daunting- not enough chairs, no proper china plates/cups...no wonder they thought you just moved in. .
I love feeling happy with what I have ❤❤. Now I want to feel content looking at things I don't need. Everytime I go out to the mall or somewhere, I feel exhausted just looking at the things, because I don't want anything. I don't buy anything but I want to feel positive while going out 😢
I actually struggle with this. Even though we are terrible at not impilse buying, that is I dont really buy as most peoples impulse is... I still want things days, weeks, and even years later. Like I will have things in an amazon cart or ali express cart and will still desire to have the thing much much later. So No i dont exactly impulse buy but the desire to still wnat the things months later feels like an impulsive thing. I find that weird. To me it seems that most people do not want a trinket item months in advance of ever getting it.
In the town where I life a local company advertised on the radio and one of their ads ended with, "Happiness isn't having what you want. It's wanting what you have". Too I was reminded of that final scene in the movie "Citizen Kane" in which the camera moves further and further away from the people and it's a sea of stuff, none of which Mr. Kane took with him when he died. It was an experience to see that.
I try and treat the world like a museum, which allows me to enjoy the beauty of material things without wanting to possess them.
Yes! 💜
I’m trying to get there
I never looked at it in that way . Awesome point of view 🙂
I agree. I like to say "shop with my eyes" so you can just look at an item, appreciate it for a minute and then walk away. You don't need to physically possess it.

I love window shopping! I can go to any store/mall, get all my steps, and come out with zero things. I’m happy I have self-control.

The day I stopped wanting more was the most freeing day of my life.
I actually enjoy shopping now, for this very reason. The feeling of walking out of a store having purchased nothing is so nice!
Yes it is 🙌
🙂
He is happy because he pays no taxes
omg same i never buy anything 😂
In recent years I’ve realized that being content is such a blessing.🙂

I'm trying really hard to get there this year...trying to stop wanting things and therefore stop the habit of shopping as well!
My God that's was a deep thought. I took a long time to understand it "My heart rejoices at the sight of all the things I do not need"

Life is short and complicated enough. Why add unnecessary baggage. It lightens the heart and mind not to. Simplicity = joy.
Knowledge is the true possession of life and something you will always possess inside you.

Thank you for this wonderful quote on Good Friday. I collect quotes and love these words...a minimalist for 15 years and still loving it...
I'll quote the great Hollies "all I need is the air that I breathe and to love you".

And I deleted the item in my cart.🙏
I feel relieved.
This is the greatest video ever 💯 ❤
She’s learning too though ❤
great message. I'm slowly getting to this status!
I felt the same way today at the thrift store!!! First time. I have been decluttering and embracing a minimalist style.
You just cannot, but challenge our thought process to minimalism on an ongoing basis. It is truly inspiring and thought provoking for more and more actions. Highly appreciate your videos -Thank you Joshua 🙏
Wow! I so want to reach this point of not wanting things. In spite of my frugality and minimalism, I'm still not there yet.
I agree completely all that you say. So good! Thank you, dear Joshua.
You are so right!!!!! Thank you always!!!♥️♥️
WOW this is really good. I took notes and am going to save this to watch again. Being content is my word of the year. Thank you!!!
Like this. I always feel good and empowered when I leave a store without buying anything. Your hair is looking sharp!
I enjoy looking at the prices so I can calculate how much I am saving 🤣🤣🤣
Yep …a 40% off sale still means it’s 60% on. Lol
@@cjhoward409 YES! So I save the 100% 😜
100% spot on!! This is truly an amazing way to live!!
Wow ! What a life that would be! Such freedom x
great story, great idea - I get that quite a lot now most of the stuff on sale everywhere is utter crap anyway.
WOW! Such wise wise words from both gentlemen 🌟 🌟 I have watched this video several times and will watch it many many more. Thank you Joshua 🌟 ❤
Excellent quote. That's exactly how I feel.
Love all of your videos Josh. Keep them coming.
Thanks for this powerful message!
thank you friend.
Thanks
we all need to hear this wisdom , Thank you
I do , ans feel relieved seeing other people stressing about their society Position and trying to get more (car, property...) and i am immensly happy i dont have that need to impress the rest

Happy Easter to you too!
Great vid, I’m a minimalist after watching your vids..❤
Wise words x
Wonderful thought, story and video. Thanks
Contentment does not mean stagnation - wise words. Wonderful video.
Thank you Always. 🙂
Beautiful words.
Congrats on 300k!
I thought something similar on a trip to Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago!
Love this!
Amazing! And so very true. 🙂
This is soooo cool!greetings from Austria, Alexandra
love it!
Great, great video.
❤ Love this!! ❤
❤☺ wonderful, thanks
Hosting more than an extra 1-2 people must be daunting- not enough chairs, no proper china plates/cups...no wonder they thought you just moved in. .
Anybody that is not subscribed to this channel please do it's well worth it!
I love feeling happy with what I have ❤❤. Now I want to feel content looking at things I don't need. Everytime I go out to the mall or somewhere, I feel exhausted just looking at the things, because I don't want anything. I don't buy anything but I want to feel positive while going out 😢
Awesome ❤!
To me it seems that most people do not want a trinket item months in advance of ever getting it.
owning stuff makes me ick
This is so very wise and good. This world will never satisfy. We need the Lord!
May I ask where you found the picture of the market?
When you know exactly what you want other things are just meh
The more stuff we attain, the more time and money to maintain and attain it.
Holy paradigm shift!
Overcoming adversity is what forges a man's character, not avoiding challenges.
I want that joy!!!
Like John Denver sang : "Buy, buy says the sign in the shop window. Why, why says the junk in the yard" .
So true!!! 👏👏🔝
