    I would love to save people some time on this matter based on what I've been through. I did not find this matrix "intuitive". First of all....updated versions have templates to choose from when starting a new file. By choosing the right template, the correct I/O settings will be configured. Why reinvent the wheel by opening an "empty song" if you're not a recording expert and you have a template to draw from? Next. I have had a "conflict" issue with anti-virus software. You can think all is good and still have a problem because of this "conflict" which did not come to my attention until I reached out to Presonus customer support. Removing the conflict meant "allowing" the app through the anti-virus software. If my experience and recommendation helps one person based on my time spent - that would be great.

    Thank you so much! I think this is the only video that covers stereo I/o properly. I was trying to track in stereo from the track itself and not the song setup tab. I was about to get everything running smoothly and in phase!

    If you're not seeing the input you just made in I/O when you click on the console track input, click the track mono/stereo button. Then the rest of them (stereo or mono) will appear when you click input again. Sometimes this is not needed - all inputs show up. I have not figured out the paths to produce the two different results, but I hope this helps those who may be stuck.

    This is great Tim. However, yesterday I helped a friend install an Apollo on a MAC. The driver, UAD software, permissions, extension permissions, not being recognized at all without software, learning the console. A real pain compared to my Focusrite 1820i. Yes, I know it does more but 68 minutes to setup an interface BEFORE we got to the part you are discussing in the video is rather ridiculous. I know it is in part because MAC's keep changing things presenting myriad installation challenges.
    I'll just say I setup my Focusrite on my Windows PC in 12 minutes. That's taking it out of the box until all channels configured in Studio One. What a difference. Same total process on the MAC was 1 hour, 36 minutes.

    I have studio one 3 and 5. On my 5 I open up audio setup and for inputs there is already channel 1 and channel 2 highlighted but when I go to add more mono channels they show up but not highlighted like the first 2 and when I push apply they go away and end up with the same 1 and 2 channel mono. It does show the inputs on left side I added but the M are not there and if I add them again and push apply they disappear. Have been trying to figure out why for a week. My Studio one 3 does fine with me adding.

    I can see my focusrite in studio one but it did not recognize all my in and outs. I had to manually put the in. I see on some examples the top row shows adapts and so on but mine did not do that even though I have at least 32 I/o available. Thanks

      Generally speaking, studio one will not always detect all the available ins and outs of an interface that isn’t from Presonus. It’ll do a pretty good no , but I would double check and even with 4.5, you can import and export I/O settings.

    I have a 2 input audio interface and I’ve sorted out all of the audio I/o set up so that one option records input one and the other records input 2. I want to record two tracks simultaneously using the different input for each and I’ve changed what inputs they have, however the both only record input 1 on my audio interface no matter what I do! What am I missing!?? It’s infuriating

    Set up all the channels but all the inputs from my interface are showing signals on input 1in the software..I'm using an MPC X and have all the outputs 1-8 assigned to 1-8 on my interface.

    • @TimTalksAudio
      @TimTalksAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have the inputs for the channels set to the different inputs? If you have outs 1-8 plugged into inputs 1-8 on your interface, you then just need to assign the inputs on the tracks.

    I'm a old man songwriter new things made me think about .What is the different if my set up is in stereo or mono?

    • @TimTalksAudio
      @TimTalksAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your main output is Stereo by default. Usually the main out put feeds either your speakers in your room or your headphones. Music has been released as stereo files since the late 60's or 70's. Your inputs on the other hand can be either mono (one signal, typically from one microphone) OR stereo (two microphones on the same source, Like a piano, or a stereo keyboard or hardware instrument). Picking when to use mono or stereo depends on a number of factors, number of microphones on a source being just one variable. With a mono input, however, you can send it to either the left output, right output, or both together (remaining mono). I hope this helps a little!

    • @TimTalksAudio
      @TimTalksAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you plug into your interface wouldn't change how S1 is looking at the inputs. If you want an XLR in input 1 and a 1/4" in input 2, that's fine. When making your tracks, for that example, you would make two mono tracks. The interface will know if it's XLR or 1/4". If you're making a stereo track for those two inputs, it will just record the two signals coming in (xlr & 1/4") onto a stereo track.

It's the outputs that are confusing me. And also physical vs virtual ins and outs. Should I be just simply doing the same for outs as I did for ins? A stereo and L/R for each pair? I don't use a lot of ins and outs, but I will be using in 5 for recording guitar DIs using the FM9 and also using out 5 for re-amping using the FM9. It's a tad confusing, any comments would be helpful

    Hello! Acquire a presonus 18/24 interface and I have a problem with the output configuration. I use 6 output channels (2 stereo channels and 2 mono) For example: Keyboards at output 1 and 2, loops at output 3 and 4, Metronome at output 5, regency at exit 6. All output channels have the same sound as the master channel, I can't individualize, even with the channel output configured. Can you help me solve this problem? I use a macbook

      You may need to open universal control and see of the outputs are set to follow the main. If thats true, deactivate that and you should then have those outputs dedicated to what ever you send to them. If this isn't the case, join the discord ( discord.gg/S84G4ejBcj ) so you can easily post some photos and we'll see what's happening!

    Hi Tim, I have a question, I own Presonus studio channel hardware / would like to EQ and compress acoustic guitars and basses before they go into DAW / and would like to upgrade my current audio interface to something with multiple inputs outputs , I like to route it all into Presonus Studio One, what audio interface do u recommend and how should I route it properly? not on budget though, thanks for the answer, love your channel

    • @TimTalksAudio
      @TimTalksAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to answer this question: How many microphones do I think I need to record at the same time, most frequently? Answering that will give you an idea of how many inputs your should shoot for. As far as using your channel strip, I would plug the mic/guitar right into the channel strip and get the sounds there, then go out of that into a LINE input on your interface. If you are going to do this a lot, then you could leave the channel strip plugged into that input and name it as such!

    If I am using a X Air 18 and I want to send a track that I have recorded to a compressor and have it return on my presonus onto a new track how does that work with a digital mixer?

    • @TimTalksAudio
      @TimTalksAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could create a mono output in your I/O settings (let's say output 3), send the channel you want to compress out of out 3 into the compressor, out of the compressor back into an input channel and then record that input. You could also use pipeline if you want to use it as an insert. I'm working on making a video on Pipeline.

    By setting up every single input and output i have, even though i don't use them all, is it stressing CPU cicles in vain? isn't it better to only setup what i 'm actually gonna use?

    • @TimTalksAudio
      @TimTalksAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, just like if you are only doing a mixing session, you aren't using the inputs of your interface, so the computer doesn't need to allocate resources for that.

      Have you added the additional inputs of your interface into the I/o settings in S1? If you don’t make the inputs and assign them, S1 won’t see the inputs as available. Then after you do that, when you make the track, you would select those inputs for the new track.

    Hello greetings from Chile : I just bought 2 apollo x16 and I use studio one 4.5 several years now, I also have the studiolive34.4.2 AI that I simply adore, the problem is that I could not set correctly to use the 32 channels and the 32 outputs since I use the studiolive as a mixer for headphones. I explain my route. I connect the mic from the recording room to the patchbay then to the preamps then to the apollo x16 inputs to exit to the studiolive line inputs, to do so monitoring. Am I making the right connections? is there another way? Should the setting in the universal console be done differently? please if you can help me I would appreciate it.

Only the left side. When i swith my microphone to the second input then the right side registers sound, but, not the left. Could there be an issue with the interface itself?

    • @TimTalksAudio

      Do you have your I/O set with a stereo input channel only? A stereo input will use both XLR jacks and dedicate 1 to left and 2 to right. Try creating two mono inputs and make sure you set your track to mono and select the correct input.

    Hello. I have a question, hopefully you can help. So my friend has Studio one 5 Artist version. It’s been couple times, we’ve tried connecting a SoundCraft 12 channel mixer so we can do live recording, when we do band practice. My question is, Studio One is only showing 2 channels, not the 12 channel inputs that the mixer has. The issue comes is when you record, when we try to solo one instrument like let’s say when we want to listen to one instrument during the end of recording for example the bass guitar, you can still hear the other instruments in the background. It only shows 2 channels, in the audio i/o section and it shows the latest driver is installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

      My guess is the board, although it connect via USB, doesn't support multitrack audio routing through the USB, so you'll only ever get Stereo files from there. If you want true multitrack, you'll want to hook up a different interface or mixer. The Presonus StudioLive mixers will allow for multitrack audio through the USB.

    • @mrchow3233
      @mrchow3233 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TimTalksAudio Haha yeah, right after I commented yesterday I looked on the Soundcraft website, and that’s what it seemed like as well. The mixer he has is the signature 12, and only supports 2 channel recording. The multitrack one does 14 in/12 out. Thank you so much, for the reply!
