Thank you to everyone who joined in on the live, it was fun to chat with you all! Maybe next time I can do a premier of a Xena video along with a livestream after - anyone down for that?
Baby dyke me was glued to the TV every week when the Xena show came on. I really wish they would bring that show back, even if it's for just one 2-hour movie. There are still so many huge Xena fans.
It would be really different now that Lucy & Renee are so much older. Honestly, based on what I've seen of follow-up projects with the same actresses, they usually disappoint compared to the original project. Venice (webseries) was terrible compared w/ Otalia (Guiding Light). The Las Aparicio movie was terrible, while I seem to rewatch the whole Juliana story every 5 years. The movie Girltrash was just that compared to South of Nowhere & that was from the director of D.E.B.S., my fave wlw romcom! A Xena movie could ruin their legacy if not done right. The ending of Xena destroyed me, as it did many fans. I just don't know what they can do in a 2-hour movie to make things right. [Edited to change "sitcom" to "romcom". Brain fart or autocomplete error? IDK. You decide.😀]
I think what bothers me about season 5 is that it seems like they put a barrier that didn't exist between them, Gabrielle is super quiet, apart from an episode or 2 we see her try to have a serious relationship with Eve, I mean... . is an immaculate baby raised by the two of them, it would be so interesting to see Gabrielle recognizing herself as Eve's mother or stepmother or godmother, and not just her mother's friend looks so ?????
As a new fan, I think the fear of sponsors pulling out cuz of gay things going between Xena and Gabrielle at the time scared em and they had to tone it for the money. It's really quite difficult for gay shows to show in tv's especially during those times without harsh judgement so the only thing they can do to balance the fans and the sponsors were to be "subtle" about it
Yup! Love your Xena videos. It just brings a smile to my face and lightens my heart when this show is playing. I liked hearing your thoughts and insights on the order of favourites by season. And I really thought you came up with a really potent concept that I think gets lost now-a-days. At 9:53 you talk about Xena and Gabriel's kiss at the end of Deja Vu All Over Again and comment "Of course today that would be just plain annoying, but back then it was revolutionary for me." It's amazing how far we've come from 1990's and obviously there are still huge mountains to climb when it comes to recognition, representation, and acceptance, but taking those first steps is what get us to our goal.
You liked the Rift?! I stopped watching for several weeks after the Gab drag. I eventually came back & caught up (videotapes), but When Fates Collide is the pinnacle of episodes for me. The third part of the Rheingold trilogy is one of my faves, though. The ending is beautiful, and my fave X & G scene takes place during that ep. In fact, I uploaded those 30 seconds to my YT channel several years ago if you want to take a look.
Absolutely agree with your list. Will say however, I only watched season 6 for the first time last month. Truly broke me! I do have a different order in which to watch it, so even though I’m sad.. Xena is still alive for me too. The rhine gold trilogy is 🔥
Mostly agree with this ranking. Season 5 review really hit the mark. I found season 3 was the best but understand the reasoning in picking season six. My problem with season six is the episodes looked like they were made with a tighter budget. The sets looked pretty fake in a lot of episodes, especially the in Norse trilogy. Season 3 was so much more rich looking.
The CGI on Xena always looked terrible compared to what would come just a few years later with LOTR (albeit that was film, not TV, & had a massive budget). @@izabelleabreu9746
I don't understand why people liked S3 so much. When I think of S3, everything is overshadowed by The Rift. But S6 gave us WFC & Parts 2 & 3 of the Rheingold Trilogy. Those could have been standalone movies as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't even bother watching other eps.
Season 2, 3 and 4 are my favourite because the passion between Xena and Gabrielle was off the charts. Xena battling in One against one army for Gabrielle and her saying all these romantic words to Gabrielle before she dies but she didn’t. The ides of March episode when Callisto paralysed Xena with the chakram and Gabrielle’s declaration of love by taking on the Roman army for Xena and the brutal but beautiful romantic scene when Xena and Gabrielle get crucified and the glaring looks and Xena saying “you were the best thing in my life” and Gabrielle saying “I love you Xena”
Very interesting and detail analysis through all 6 seasons. Although I don't agree. I really like 5, in fact I like them from 1 to 6 more and more being the first my least favorite, because they are building the strength of their relationship where in the last one is like you said, not even subtext by this point. The villains they incorporated through every season made them better and better in my opinion. And your lucky because I had no idea, and friend in need broke my heart forever, but it will always be the greatest show ever.
Mostly agree! But season 1 for me is a bit higher bc one of my absolite favorite episodes is there a doctor in the house! I love your Xena videos btw! I'm so happy that until now we are appreciating this legendary series!
For me, Xena lived because that so-called "ending" we got was not in line with the Blue Scrolls which contain the truth. It's my head cannon but it's better than the ptsd inducing tv show ending.
PTSD-inducing is right! I grieved like I'd lost someone I loved (because I had) for at least 4 weeks, breaking down in tears for apparently no reason & having that empty, distracted feeling when one has experienced a loss & can't think of anything else. Seeing X disappear & G sitting there alone was devastating.
same! i've got hit in my feels so deeply that i've lost my appetite and literally couldn't eat for weeks. it felt like someone ripped my heart out of my chest and squeezed it slowly in their hand. i hope i never feel this kind of hurt in my life ever again
My god, you guys get me! Perfectly said @BoudiciaDark, it WAS PTSD-inducing. I was beside myself. devastated. In a state of shock. I could not live in a world without Xena. I had to do so much damage control after that, read countless fanfics (bless those authors) that clarified what *actually* happened. I still to this day can't watch the finale. Shame on the writers for doing that to us. The absolute worst way to end the show. Just horrible.
I've learned to...ehm...like season 5 on rewatches, but it is also my least favourite. I mean, a freaking mermaid episode? What were they thinking? Season 6 is indeed the best, especially when following the alternative watch order you provided. (Thank U❤) However, I always watch 'Soul Possession' between FIN and WFC because, for me, the comedy provides a welcome break from the extreme drama of those 3 episodes. There's also the added bonus of getting the idea that Xena and Gabby belong together reaffirmed before bringing Xena back to life.
I would end the series with them riding off on the horse together at the end of When Fates Collide. If not for Gabrielle catching the chakram & doing everything Xena can do, and Gabrielle carrying water in her mouth to Xena, I would just not watch FIN at all.
Hi Missed the live chat Season 5 is woeful and for me the 1st 4 is where the series to me started to grow The first is pretty consistent in tone, and this is where they are trying to establish themselves as a show For me, the stand out relationship was between Xena and Gabrielle early in and it was great how they grew this Until 5 that is … it was where the wheels came off, and the growth in confidence in the writers that the show had legs just stopped - hadn’t heard about the loss of writers to LOTR Another great post Take care - love is love all
Which Xena writers worked on LOTR? Steven Sears? Katherine Fugate? Because if they were not with LOTR, they should have written MORE eps of X:WP to cover for the missing writers. And you can't get more supportive of them as a couple than those 2 writers.
I actually remember being annoyed that, while there was SO much growth & character development in Gabrielle in early seasons, Xena remained stagnant until S3.
My rankings are as follows 1. Season 3 2. Season 5 ( I know a lot of people will not agree with me on this one) 3. Season 4. 4. Season 6 5. Season 2 6. Season 1. I just did a rewatch of the whole series because I was showing it to my best friend who had never seen the series. Season 3 had some of the best storylines (Dahak/Hope, The Rift, Lao Ma and the Season Ending Cliffhanger) and had my most favorite episode of the series "Maternal Instincts". Season 5 is in my second place because I enjoyed "The Twilight of The Gods", Athena's introduction, Xena's Pregnancy, and the two episodes tied for my 3rd in the series "Seeds of Faith" and "Motherhood". It did have my least two favorite of the series though "LifeBlood" and "Married with Fishsticks" but I still feel like I thoroughly enjoyed season 5 despite those two episodes. Season 4 is in my 3rd place because I overall enjoyed many of the episodes. I enjoyed (The Vision, The Crucifixion, and Gabrielle's Arc) "Ides of March" is my second favorite episode of the series. Callisto returning was such a highlight for me, and the scenes where Xena and Gabrielle are being crucified and Caesar being stabbed repeatedly was so well done. I also enjoyed the introduction of Alti. I felt like she was a great villain. Season 6 is in my 4th place, and after re watching it I felt like I couldn't place it any higher. Yes, I do love the subtext of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship is more prominent in Season 6, and I appreciate that. However, with the exception of "Many Happy Returns" and "When Fates Collide" I felt like the last half of the show fell flat. "Send In The Clones" and "Soul Possession" were really weak in my opinion for it being the last season. I would have rather watched them in their present day going on their adventures and doing what they do. Also, I felt like they just dropped the Eve storyline all together and sent her to Chin and she was never heard of or spoken about since her departure which I thought was odd. Rewatching the 2 part finale was a little hard to watch, but I understand it more now than when I first watched it back when it premiered in 2001. (Yes..I watched it live). As much as I disagreed with their decision to end it the way they did, I felt like I understood why they ended it that way. Also I feel like Gabrielle's Bard to Warrior Arc was complete by the end of the episode. Season 2 had some really good episodes like "The Quest", "Necessary Evil", "Return of Callisto", "Intimate Strangers, and "Day In the Life" but I think what it lacked were more arc storylines. I know Gabrielle had her on going Arc going on, but what I did love about Season 3, 4 and 5 were they had on going Arc stories that were related to the season. I loved seeing Gabrielle fight alongside Xena more. Season 2 though had the weakest season ending with "Comedy of Eros" I did like that episode, but for a season finale it was not strong at all. Season 1 also had some really great episodes that are some of my favorites of the series like "Callisto", "The Greater Good", and "Is There A Doctor In The House". The first half of the season was okay, but I think the second half is way better. For me re watching Season 1 was a chore until we got to those three episodes I mentioned. I did enjoy "Sins of The Past", and "Chariots of War". I think if you are watching this show for the first time you will enjoy this season, but as someone who has seen the entire series and re watching it, it was a chore waiting for the better stuff.
I totally agree with you in everything you say . - I like the way the took the child out of the equation freezing them for years. (I like it now, when i was a child that broke my heart haha) - I do enjoy the cleopatra episode, i understand it was odd , but i enjoy it as a stand alone and I do enjoy Gabrielle killing, her anger, her jealousy and her arc. And I do love, love, love the finale
Yeah, I can't watch it either. Even just watching clips of "that scene" in vids like these makes me dive for my spacebar to stop the vid lest I see Gabrielle sitting alone again. That was so traumatic to see the first time.
I agree with most of what you're saying! Season 5, worst (you nailed every point). Season 1, as second last, agreed. I love season 6 but I think season 3 has like a half point edge over season 6. Great video. I feel seen 😂😂😂
Interestesting, i think my ranking of the seasons would be: 1. Season 3 2. Season 6 3. Season 2 4. Season 4 5. Season 1 6. Season 5 I think Xena doesn´t have a bad season, but there are some seasons better than the others. Thank you for reminding me how many amazing episodes are in Season 6, i forgot how many episodes i love so much is in this season.
Seasons Three and Six really were so good. Six was actually able to deal with some darker themes and more complex morality, and Xena and Gabrielle's relationship was able to be explicit enough to not be so frustrating. Three had the rift and the musical....so good. And One establishes the world and I love being able to go back and see how different it started out. I do have a soft spot in my heart for Season Five because I loved seeing Xena pregnant and mothering, and there was a lot of Ares stuff that season and I was a toxic Xena-Ares ship, sorry, everybody. But it was super uneven and it felt like the writers didn't know or understand the characters. I would have thought the Xena we knew would have a lot of ambivalence about being pregnant and be investigating how it happened and that Gabrielle might have some complicated feelings about it too being how her own immaculate conception turned out, (and Xena's role in that, being so sure Gabrielle's baby was evil but somehow also sure hers wasn't?) It's like the only way the writers could imagine a woman reacting to a shock pregnancy was complete joy. I think Lucy Lawless being pregnant and having this baby around could have actually been an opportunity to power Gabrielle up and have her take the lead on some of those battles rather than minimize and sideline her, and there were a lot of missed opportunities to explore the complexities of pregnancy and motherhood on a fantasy adventure show where you can't just hide the belly behind a purse.
Call me crazy but i liked the End. I think season 6 was the best one as well bcz the production team knew it was the end so they didn't care about hiding their relationship enymore. In terms of the storyline, i like dthis season as well bcz Xena was supposed to have that ending, She got to experiement true love as a full with Gabrielle, she finally found peace with it. it was a goo ending bcz there was nothing else to show and her redemtion was beatutiful. They also made it clear for us that this was just the beggining for Xena and Gabrielle bcz they were destined to spend their other lifes together.
I looked at this season through eyes of how the series would end. Starting when Gabrielle met Aldi the first time and her hair was cut. I look at that as Gabrielle coming into her own power. As the season advanced, I looked at it as kind of Gabrielle subconsciously realizing she would be alone one day. The season we meet grown Eve, Xena teaches Gabby the pinch. In the series finale, Gabby successfully uses the chakram.
X teaches G the PINCH in the finale. That was when she said, "It I only had 30 seconds to live, this is how I'd want to live them... looking into your eyes." Earlier in the series she taught Gabrielle how to REMOVE the pinch so she could bring X out of it. Gabrielle catching the chakram & the expression on her face when she does is my fave image from the finale.
I totally wrote a fanfic and wrote around the cleopatra episode bc I hated that xena was sort of throwing anthony in gabs face and I played out a scene where Gabrielle has her own fling on the side to take her mind of xena
I really fell off when season 5 originally aired. I think I saw bits and pieces of season 6 and the finale. I think I had discovered fan fiction by then so the show continued on for me that way. I still don’t know if I have seen all of the eps
I think Xena peaked with Xeason 3. I dont like Gabrielle the warrior, I missed the innocent bard, I never cared much for the Livia/Eve arc or pregnant Xena. But I know why Xena had to be pregnant so I cant really complain! Callisto was the best villain ever, I missed her after season 3, she was awesome!
I'm just wondering where all this is coming from, I watched Xena through the third seanon as a teenager and I never saw any subtext or anything. Maybe I missed it somehow but I was bi at the time so it doesn't seem like it was something I should miss. I quit watching after the third season cuz the show just got dumb and was so disappointing. So I'm hoping now that I'm a million years old I can go back and watch these and get something out of it but wow I think people are just treating the show like they do SpongeBob and trying to make it into something it's not. I'm on season 1 right now and I'm like huh?
not a fan of season 6. they eliminated: Xena's mom, Gabrielle's parents, most of the amazons, except Ephiny's son, all the centaurs, and of course Xena. I'm surprised you didn't include: Send in the clones, for season 6. it ends with them having a romantic drink, inside a car.
I cringed so hard when you said One Against an Army was the first time the show explored the concept of the greater good. Most of your opinions about this show are so off because you only focus on the relationship stuff so you don't even realize how the greater good was explored in season 1.
Thank you to everyone who joined in on the live, it was fun to chat with you all! Maybe next time I can do a premier of a Xena video along with a livestream after - anyone down for that?

2. Season 5 ( I know a lot of people will not agree with me on this one)
3. Season 4.
4. Season 6
5. Season 2
You loved the finale? 🤯 The one that destroyed the rest of us? 'K.
Yes, I cried. I was maybe 13 or less. But loved the cinematography, the script, I felt it had closure. @@DonnaBrooks
Even after all this time, the ending of xena still breaks my heart and I still can't watch it. Xena, I'll love you forever.
I still can’t watch the last 2 episode. I tried I can’t lol
Yeah, I can't watch it either. Even just watching clips of "that scene" in vids like these makes me dive for my spacebar to stop the vid lest I see Gabrielle sitting alone again. That was so traumatic to see the first time.
Watching the last few eps in a different order is great, i'm gonna do that on my rewatch :)
Let me know how you like it! I think it works great :)
I agree with most of what you're saying! Season 5, worst (you nailed every point). Season 1, as second last, agreed. I love season 6 but I think season 3 has like a half point edge over season 6. Great video. I feel seen 😂😂😂
To be fair Season 3 was very strong but the Rheingold trilogy tipped the scales for me
Interestesting, i think my ranking of the seasons would be:
1. Season 3
2. Season 6
3. Season 2
4. Season 4
5. Season 1
6. Season 5
I think Xena doesn´t have a bad season, but there are some seasons better than the others.
I can't hear Hate is the Star without crying.
Wow I loved all this recap, thank you very much for sharing 😉
This is exactly what I needed!!!😍
Call me crazy but i liked the End. I think season 6 was the best one as well bcz the production team knew it was the end so they didn't care about hiding their relationship enymore. In terms of the storyline, i like dthis season as well bcz Xena was supposed to have that ending, She got to experiement true love as a full with Gabrielle, she finally found peace with it. it was a goo ending bcz there was nothing else to show and her redemtion was beatutiful. They also made it clear for us that this was just the beggining for Xena and Gabrielle bcz they were destined to spend their other lifes together.
Aw man I actually like season 5! Though there are some duds, I will agree. I skip those when I rewatch.
Here's my ranking
1. Season 3
2. Season 2
3. Season 4
4. Season 1
5. Season 5
6. Season 6
i learned to ignore series finales from Xena. helped a lot with Supernatural
Facts beyond facts!!❤❤❤❤ I love this video 😊😊😊
@@DonnaBrooks you're right 👍
I ship Gabrielle & Xena so hard!
Such a great video!!!
I totally wrote a fanfic and wrote around the cleopatra episode bc I hated that xena was sort of throwing anthony in gabs face and I played out a scene where Gabrielle has her own fling on the side to take her mind of xena
Links please
Aaalways here for Xena conteent
Love it!!
I really fell off when season 5 originally aired. I think I saw bits and pieces of season 6 and the finale. I think I had discovered fan fiction by then so the show continued on for me that way. I still don’t know if I have seen all of the eps
Season 6 kinda made up for season 5, it go super shippy, so I would totally recommend watching it!
I agree hated fish sticks and the DNA one and will never watch her death.
Just found out people ahte season 5 i only seen seaspn 1 disc 1 all epsiode and season 3 epsiode 2 and season 6 fonle epsiode part 1 and 2
I'm just wondering where all this is coming from, I watched Xena through the third seanon as a teenager and I never saw any subtext or anything.
Season on 6 was the worst season ever. I hated that season. I loved all the others but 5 is my favorite
Oh that's hilarious that we're complete opposites on our fave/least fave.
@@100percentshipper 😄😄😄that is extremely interesting
I'm with you on that.season five was my favorite.
not a fan of season 6. they eliminated: Xena's mom, Gabrielle's parents, most of the amazons, except Ephiny's son, all the centaurs, and of course Xena.
I'm surprised you didn't include: Send in the clones, for season 6. it ends with them having a romantic drink, inside a car.
I cringed so hard when you said One Against an Army was the first time the show explored the concept of the greater good. Most of your opinions about this show are so off because you only focus on the relationship stuff so you don't even realize how the greater good was explored in season 1.
season 1 was decent. the rest was trash
❤ Zenaida!!!
