    "Eric, you never have to be afraid to go home." The way he read that line was so beautiful. So much warmth and emotion behind it. I wish for us all to have a home like that one day, if not already.

    • @bensonbrett30
      @bensonbrett30 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What if that home is "inside"? Then, home is never the physical space, but an inner peace that is with you everyday, every minute within this form...

    • @flyingfrog7847
      @flyingfrog7847 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @bensonbrett30 ofcourse it's inside. Have you ever heard an expression "home is where the hearth is is". But it also goes deeper, because you can't live with or inside the comfort of your home all the time. Home is somewhere you can come back to, otherwise you become a hermit who never leaves the comfort of your home, which is bad for any kind of development.

    Alan is a VERY underrated TV dad. I don't feel like many talk about him when they talk about TV dads. The man delivered lines like no one else. We always talk about Shawn carrying the show, but I really enjoyed Alan's role in the Matthews house.

    You can tell that Allen was talking about himself by his demeanor and he doesn't want the same to happen to eric. I mean, there is nothing wrong with settling if you are content with things in life, but the problems come about when you settle just for the sake of settling and that's what we get from Allen in this scene. This right here was the problem with some of the 90s messaging. They keep hounding that college is seeking your full potential. Growing and seeking your potential should not be tied to college. We got this a ton from the baby boomer generation even in real life. This got amplified in movies and television series like this. Just because Eric didn't get the SAT scores to get into college doesn't mean that is the path he should take.

    • @your1supporter
      @your1supporter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Because it was true. Without a college degree in those days you were stuck at a job with hardly any upward mobility and low wages. These days you can attend vocational school, learn a trade, make a living. It's a more acceptable route to take than it was in the 90s.

    • @0doublezero0
      @0doublezero0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@your1supporter No that's because schools like that got a terrible image before the 2000s because they were filled with people who were high school dropouts. Vocational education became much better in the 2000s (with a broader education) which changed their image for the better.
      Yes, college does help with upper mobility but the problem is the boomer mentality. They saw the dudes with college degrees getting further ahead than with their high school degree alone. So they think all kids need to go to college to not go through what they went through. However, now everyone went to college. The jobs that didn't require a degree now does thanks to the insane competition. So instead of that same job that only required a high school degree now requires a college degree, thus taking on 30k debt that they shouldn't have to take.
      My issue with the boomer mentality isn't just going to college, but going to college without a sense of what you want to do. This is what we did with high school kids and now we do it to college kids. So now they all go to college getting degrees that aren't cost-effective or applying to jobs that previously didn't need a college degree. The other routes were always there even in the 90s but we glammed up the image of college more than we should have.

It doesn’t always work out the same when you have multiple siblings and a lot of parents think there kids will have a life like Corey and tapanga do with there child. In my opinion the parents didn’t want to let go and had no trust in there oldest sons decisions. If he stayed and didn’t like the decision then he can go home later but them not letting him take a chance at life when he was sure he knew what he wanted and giving him the opportunity to see what he can make out of life is why most siblings and kids are living at home with there parents in there early and late 30’s because they are coddled by parents that won’t let them leave the nest.

The way things went I feel like Eric would have way benefited staying here. He wouldn’t have been alone. Had a girl, some friends, could visit his fam and have some nice pie, and a place to stay. Who knows what kind of life he would have made for himself?
      I don’t like how Alan felt the need to control every aspect of his children’s lives. He wanted Eric to stay with him now instead of exploring his options but later it was the opposite, which makes no sense. Later he wants Eric to make something of himself but Alan took that opportunity away long ago. Alan also didn’t want Cory to marry Topanaga. Sure they’re young but they’re adults now so whatever.

Eric has exhibited a tendency to make hasty decisions or go all in on something he deems as a “sure thing” (he tried dropping out of HS to pursue a weatherman career not long before this incident) so it’s no surprise Alan wants to make sure he truly takes the time to process/figure things out and prepare himself, likely with his guidance, as opposed to undergoing this journey out of the feeling that he needs to completely escape the life he has at home due to personal insecurities.

    I grew up with a hard-working single mother and a father who dibble dabbled in an out of my life.
    Both were great parents (rest in peace).
    When I was growing up, the idea of having 2 parents in the household made you uncool-made you "too American". I grew up amongst single parent familes with no fathers and we all grew up "hating" our fathers in some sort of way.
    And as we grew up with no direction and order from our fathers, many of us lost our way and looked for Fatherdom elsewhere. Some turned to clubs and sports, some turned to school and performing arts-but for the lot of us, we roamed the streets looking for Fathers.
    Today, in 2023, I am now a father to 3 boys. Two teens and a 2 year old.
    My main goal is to be a father to them as Alan was to Corey and Eric.
    I see now the importance of a strong foundational family. Everyone has a role. The Father keeps the order and the Mother keeps the love.
    Society today has lost sight of the impact of a mother/father household and should make it an effort to become one.
    Because ultimately. the children are the ones who suffer. When the parents are absent, the parents are content with what's going on in their lives, but are ignorant to the needs of the child.

    I love Boy Meets World but this scene really rubbed me the wrong way. To me, it looked down on small town life like it was inferior to living in the city. The dad was really vague about how living in a small town would be “settling”, as opposed to city life, which is apparently superior in his mind. I do like what Alan said about coming home to be close to family and friends though. Also, what Eric said about not getting into college… there is nothing wrong with that. College isn’t for everyone. It seemed to me like they associated not going to college with failure and living in a small town as failure. The people in that town were very welcoming and supportive of Eric. I liked that.

    • @knucklehoagies
      @knucklehoagies ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This was a common trope in family sitcoms back in the 90s... it reflected the parenting styles of the time. Baby Boomers pushed their millenial kids hard to go to college at all costs because settling for anything else is considered a "downgrade" in their eyes.
      If you watch a number of other sitcoms from the 90s, you notice how they always portray people in trades as "dopey dumb" people. Insinuating that anything less than a college graduate is considered a bottom feeder of society.
      This is hollywood elitism at play here. Fortunately nowadays, the truth about it is more known to the public but back then, it was super easy to spread this type of propaganda and have people eat it up.
      Another Example: Clearly this show is set in Philadelphia and the small town Eric is in this episode is located somewhere just outside the city.... yet the locals have southern accents and talk like backwoods hicks... The writers and producers of the show knew exactly what they were doing.

    I don’t like myself ,
    I finally started my life over with someone
    It didn’t work out and I don’t care,
    I’m still waiting for her,
    What am I supposed to do with my life now?

      If you expect immediate results you'll never get them. If you wait around and experience new things, the ups and downs, you will find what you are looking for.
