Hello, I started ballet at 46 and love it, I am 50 now and ballet is one of my everyday motivation. Two years ago I got on pointe one dream from childhood, I thought because of my age it wouldn’t happen and now I’m super happy 💐😊

I just started learning ballet from online videos (can't afford classes) at 25, and I'm totally inspired by all the people on here who started as adults. I totally wear the leotard and tights, even though I'm only doing it at home, because I love the way it looks ^_^ it makes me feel legit!

I'm starting at 19, and losing weight. Growing up my mom wouldn't let me because i was "Big boned" Now i can explain it to her that anyone can do it. It's not just a dance, it's an art...a painful, hard, beautiful art that anyone can master.

I can totally relate. I was a fat like really fat child and mother would always tell me not to think about it because ballet is for the fit girls. Nevertheless I grew up loving it and I am really thinking about starting. I am 16 still overweight but I am working on it.😂

Just found your comment. I'm 16 and long to try ballet, but I have some concerns. I'm not athletic or in shape at all and have asthma, and in order to pay for lessons I'd have to choose between ballet and piano, since it's so expensive. I was wondering how it's going? Are you enjoying it, has it been a struggle, etc?

@@the_gracita i started ballet at 16 too! Its been 2 years now I can tell you that I enjoy every bit of it even with the difficulties that come with not having started early, I was not flexible at all, thicc, insecure, thought I was too old and my body to big, that the girls there were an gonna be beautiful and skinny and that I would feel so out of place, but it all went okay! I'm still not really that flexible but I've been working on it in my own and with flexibility classes, I struggle with curled toes and can't point right but also working on it, and at a year and a half I got in pointe and it's amazing and I love it all. Please give it a chance, it can really change you, don't let anyone or anything put you down on the things you like, and fight for them if you really love them enough

@@solinsaurralde5345 thank you for replying! I don't think I can do it since it's so expensive sadly :( but I might go in for a free class to give it a go, and I'll definitely try it out if there's a class in college or something. I'm so glad it's gone so well for you! I'm impressed that you got into pointe so soon!

OMG - this post is 2 years ago? I just found it. Every word you said is SO TRUE. I'm 66, going on 67 very soon, and started ballet 7 weeks ago. Yes, I was apprehensive, having never taken ballet. The owner encouraged me to join. Her oldest student is 82. When I heard this, I said, I must try it. At first, yes, of course, everything was difficult because of my limited flexibility. My feet would not easily go into a Tendu. But with time and patience, I've improved. And I love it. I encourage anyone wanting to try ballet - go for it. She advised me to wear jogger pants and a comfortable top, exactly like you said. She advised against buying the ballet flat until I was sure I would continue the class, and to wear a pair of socks. I've met such great people, and yes, they are all shapes, sizes and ages. And although I can't yet do the splits, she's been working with us to slowly work towards that goal - which she claims is totally achievable, at any age. (Still not sure about that one.) The atmosphere is wonderful, and the music is wonderful! And in just that short amount of time, my legs have toned and lost inches in my thighs, my arms have toned and my triceps don't wiggle when I wave bye-bye. That was an unexpected benefit I received from doing ballet - at MY age! I never would've believed it.

I'm feeling better and just doing this as a full time hobby. Im doing these classes old school and by the book just because I want to. ballet has become a good part of my life and I'm gonna continue.BTW I'm married with two kids ballet is my passionate hobby. I have lots of plans for future ballet involvement. Ballet is for anyone and everyone.:-)

Right now just finding some places that do adult classes is getting harder and harder. I'm on hiatus right now due to lack of adult classes. Private lessons are too expensive, but hopefully something will work out soon right now I work out Barre classes at home thanks to many TH-cam uploaded. Not the same as a real class but right now it's a good second choice.

I loved this video! Like many others, I was not able to take dance as a child. Luckily the University I attended offered ballet classes for adults. I'm now 25 yr and still dancing. I love the way I feel when I'm dancing. It's a way for me to express myself. I recommend it to everyone no matter the age. In my current class we have someone the age of 70 starting and she is doing great. I admire her and wish more people would have the courage to do what they love.

I am so glad I came across this video. I, too, am a 48 year old male who always wanted to dance. But, my parents always wanted me to play violin instead. So, I did for many many years. I am now retired and need something to take up my spare time and keep me moving. Someone told me to pick up my music again. My response was, "been there, done that." I want to learn a different art form.
Long story short I found a wonderful teacher with a beautiful studio and she teaches only adults. She has a professional dance floor, Harlequin sprung floor and ash wood barres and 7 feet tall studio mirrors. She does require a dress code, but her reason is so she can see whether the person is engaging or not engaging the correct muscles during practice. I'm a little worried about getting into a pair of tights and dance belt, but I will be taking one-on-one private lessons first before I sign up for the beginner adult classes.
I'm so excited to start. I'm getting my tights, shoes, and stuff this Friday and then next week start my first class. I can't wait!

Next week I start up again and will be taking private lessons on top of regular classes. I am beyond excited. I will join yoga as well. Goal for this year is to get my splits by December. Hopefully a lot sooner but that’s my goal.

I'm taking a sample ballet class this Saturdat, and it's been well over 10 years since I last took an adult ballet class (and only took 3 semesters worth). I also figure skate, run,and take gymnastics...all started as an adult in my 30s. That being said, I think the hardest thing is to not compare yourself to the other dancers in your class in a way that you end up feeling like the "weakest link." Yes, some dancers in your class may "catch on" to routines right away, and you may feel like you have two left feet, and you can't figure out which arm goes where, and you're struggling to be on rélevé. You are just as important to that class as everyone else, so be patient. You WILL be improving...stronger, more flexible, improving brain function, etc. Plus, you will be getting more of a workout than those sitting on the couch. :)

I never lost my love of ballet and used everything I learned for college level cheer and dance team. Now at 36 I still dance and found a great adult ballet class here where I live. I have been in now for a year for 2hr class once a week. Everything is still in me. Like riding a bike again. I can’t wait to get refitted for pointe shoes. I know I’m never going to dance as a professional, but my love for this art form won’t go away. Dance like no one is watching.

I went to adult ballet class in my late 40s. I worked hard and really enjoyed it. Kept getting told off by the teacher for going right up on my toes in ballet flats. I asked about learning pointe and was told they would not teach me - incase I hurt myself and sued THEM! I had already bought a pair of Bloch pointe shoes (had them fitted properly) so they now live in my little vanity case. I put them on last week and can still stand en pointe with them. I am 62 years old now and would love to go back to ballet but I think I will be better off teaching myself in my kitchen (only hard floor, rest have carpets). Ironically, I am the right size and build for ballet. I wonder how many adults have been discouraged like me. Seems to be a UK thing now - people too afraid of being sued. Very sad.

I first started ballet when I was 19 years old and dance for about 2-3 years. As I had to move to a more faraway university I had to leave that dance schoo and at the city where the university was, I didn´t find an appropriate ballet class for me. Last year, I´m now 24, then I switched to a nearer university. Luckily I found an adult ballet beginner class again. First of all, thank you for your video, I like it very much!
But I don‘t agree completely with the flexibility part. (I’m a doctor and know a bit about body anatomy and stuff)
Yes, definitely, you can improve on flexibility, no question. But for some movements, you can‘t improve very much once your body is fully grown out, otherwise you can get badly injured if you force it. Don’t expect that you will ever look like a professional, if you don’t have the right body type. Here are some examples:
Turnout/hips: try 1st or 2nd position and see how your feet turn out. If it’s close to 180 degree- perfect. If not, most people make the mistake to force their feet to turnout by twisting their knees. But turnout HAS to come from the hips and not from the knees! If you do this wrong and force it on a regular base, you will end up with knee/meniscus damage. Hip turnout is mainly what you are born with, and you can only improve it very little when you are very young. Sorry 😐
Same goes to back flexibility. Stand straight, lift your arm and bend backwards. Can you see the floor? Perfect. The wall behind you? Not bad 😉Or just the ceiling? Hmm 😐 Again, if you force it, you can be badly hurt, like disc prolaps and stuff like that.
Foot flexibility is also mainly what you are born with. Stretch your foot. Can you fully bend your toes/mainly big toe in both joints and get a good arch in the foot? I can‘t, unfortunately. Again, you can‘t improve to much once your foot are grown out and you reached your „final“ shoe size.
The good news is that you can manage splits and leg flexibility at almost every age, if you practice often and don‘t overdo it! 🙂
Long comment, sorry... just want to remind all of you to be careful, so you won‘t be injured. All of us who do ballet as adults need to be aware to do it right.
    Good luck!! 🍀

I start taking ballet and jazz at 40, after 10 years of aerobic, I didn't do any exercises when I was younger, sitting at a drawing table and get my back very curve, now at 64 my back is almost perfect and I got a front split and I can do pancake, bridge and other yoga posture very easily.

Just a note on being skinny. No, you don't have to be skinny and there are many heavier people who are light on their feet and can jump high. BUT, being thinner does help! I danced competitively for 10 years in a similar style to ballet. It required a lot of jumping, standing high up on your toes and having a good turn- out. Back then I was 20 kilograms lighter than I am now, and I was able to jump high and almost do the splits in the air. Now that I'm a little overweight, I'm more unfit, less flexible and I can't jump. I am almost certain that my dancing will improve when I lose this weight again, but I am also doing exercises to help my strength and flexibility

I really, really, really love ballet. Unfortunately I canceled taking ballet classes when I was younger. I'm so sorry for that. Now I'm 28. I was taking classes at 23 but the teacher wasn't good for me so I stopped again. I really want to take a ballet class again for adults. Do you think, a beginner as an adult can some day, dance pointe?
I have this one dream, to dance on pointe, with very hard training and a lot of exercises.... but I don't know if this can be real some day?

My concern is that I am too curvy, I have a larger bust and when I tried to dance again at 15 I was very embarrassed by it. I'm 22 now, and my desire to do ballet has not faded, but I'm concerned that I might have to bind my chest and I dont want to damage myself. I'd like to know if you have any advice on that.

    • @mathildewesendonck7225

Ojo Momoko omg I have the same problem. I researched for ages to find a really good and tight bra. Actually I finally bought one that is used after breast surgery to put some pressure on the breast. What also works is to wear a good and tight swimsuit (most leotards don‘t fit well when you have a larger bust). Also good underwear to make you look slim (I have Spanx) can help to make you feel more comfortable. Then I wear a nice T-Shirt on top and feel okay.
What is also important that you really keep your back and chest straight and shoulders back and down. Most women with a larger bust don‘t do that because you feel it makes you look even bigger, which is not true and absolutely wrong for ballet. And if you exercise for a while you will notice that your upper body gets much tighter. In my case I lost some weight just by working out, which also helped to shape my body.
Keep going!! Hope it helps 😉

Christian Wijnoogst I am a doctor, and actually sooo many people in their seventies have already had hip, knee and back surgery, either because of being overweight, or having arthritis or osteoporosis (quite often as a result of lack of exercise and muscle strength). It’s rather rare that elderly people don‘t have any issues with their joints.
No offense, I don‘t want to talk down the negative effects of ballet, I know what it does to the body. I just want to put it in perspective.
      Best wishes to you 🍀

    • @mathildewesendonck7225
      @mathildewesendonck7225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Bless O hmmm, maybe it’s possible, but you would be a very very very rare example if you manage to do that. You will need to catch up with 10-15 years of training, just to get strength and muscle memory, and you need many hours a day. And it’s not just the technique, ballet is also like a language. For example if your teacher tells you a combination, like at bar work, you have to understand the exercise immediately without thinking about it. Otherwise you will always stand out in class. That’s what I find really hard as a late beginner. Watch classes like Royal Ballet at world ballet day here on YT, and you will know what I mean.
If I where you I would install a mirror and a ballet bar in my bedroom and practice any minute. Basic exercises like relevee- plié in all 5 positions like 4-5 times a day 50 reps. That helps a lot to get strength.
It also depends very much on your body type. If you want to succeed, you need a good hip turnout, foot arch and foot stretch and flexibility, especially in the back and shoulders. Because these things you cannot really improve much once your body is fully grown out. (I‘m a doctor and know a bit about anatomy and stuff ) Other things like splits etc. can be managed and trained even when you are old. But you really really need to work on flexibility ... sit in the split when you do homework or reading or watching television or YT.
Good luck!! 🍀 I keep my fingers crossed!! Please write again how you are doing, I‘m very interested 👍

Any thoughts on that? why ballet is not affordable for everybody? less affluent communities have no contact with dance studios at all (my experience); and why people think that ballet male dancers must be gay? is that because the men spectacular lean muscled bodies?

      @mathildewesendonck7225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Mary Hope and if you meet people who tell you that you are too old, don‘t listen to them!! That’s most important!! If I where you I would arrange a ballet bar and a mirror in some corner in my bedroom, if possible. If you can’t, no problem, I for example do some ballet exercises in the bathroom when brushing my teeth. And just work any time you can and have some spare minutes. Like basics: relevé - plié three times a day 50 repetitions in various positions. That helps immense to get strength and turnout.
Most often it’s just the people and teachers around you that tell you you are too old, which is not very encouraging. Again, just ignore them. So for me it is very helpful to practice by myself, and then I feel much better when I go to classes. And sometimes I do really well there, because I‘m so used to the bar work, and get some praise from the teacher, which makes me happy. 😊
Have you subscribed to Claudia Deans channel? Her exercises and tipps are amazing for any level!
      Good luck 🍀👍!

Dear Smash, I am sorry, but wanting to be a professional dancer at 13 or 16 not possible ! I was 18 when I started my career at the conservatorium, I became a principal with the Dutch National Ballet, but only because I was very talented. And, that was 60 years ago !You have to start at 9 nowadays, if you are 13 or 16 you do not fit into the schoolsystem you see.I was unsure of my technic all my professional life, I never danced the great classic roles, I became a principal doing contempary roles like Death in Green Table and the Mandarin in Miraculous Mandarin, etc. Anyway, it is much better staying an amateur dancer, our's is the shortest theater career there is !@Smash

    • @cwijnoogst7128
      @cwijnoogst7128 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@Smash Hi Smash, you are right, things were very different in those days. In Holland you had 1 conservatory, in the Hague, if you came from an other part of Holland you needed a place to live, which was costly, many parents could not afford to pay it. Also, the boys had to go in the army for 2 years, you could only get out at a price; if a psychiatre declared you mentaly unstable, that stayed on your personal record . Understandable if you were in full training you could not stop for 2 years. The technical level of classical ballet has advanced enormelisly since those days, the demands are so much greater nowadays. Also, often later on in life you have a price to pay; most of my collega's had to undergo hipoperations ! For the girls often there is an other problem; because it is top-sport you do the whole day, they are all underweight their menstruation stops, often when they stop, and want to have children, that causes problems. So, just do it for fun, you can do it for 50 years or so, without the stress and frustration. Stay cool Smash !

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
If you have any questions let me know xx
