This is almost a perfect video... found out the hard way doing this on a 2003 forester. Looks like same rack. TAKE OFF THE INNER TIE RODS. I wish i had done that. Now i either have to drop the whole subframe or remove the sway bar which is a pain or bolt the rack back in and remove the inner tie rods...other wise the rack aint coming out....

Disconnect the sway bar to body brackets to get the sway out of the way before

I thought you should leave that nut on for the tie rod so you you how far to put the new one on (more accurate than counting turns).

@@MrMasterFlash Thanks for your comment. The new rack will have new inner tie rods with new nuts. They won't be in the correct spot. Counting turns will get you close but getting an alignment is required after this repair 👍

What replacement rack do you recommend for a 2007 H6 Outback? OEM is 3x more expensive.

The 2014 is completely different =[ .... there are no brackets to remove ... the steering rack is on top the chasey I have no clue how to unscrew the bolts/nuts and pull it out do you have ideas sir?

So...my alignment is off before starting- steering wheel is at almost 1 o'clock when wheels are straight. Is this going to affect how the rack is centered? And could an alignment after the install fix this?

centre your steering wheel once the rack is off, centre the new rack and then install where the splines align. but if that doesn't work then it's prob the clock spring reset.

What are the specific name for those lines on the rack. I can’t find those lines anywhere it all hoses

Power steering hose/line. There is the high pressure line and return line to the reservoir.

The steering wheel stays on. You disconnect the column under the vehicle 👍

It was leaking quite a bit from the outer seals.

It wasn't too bad. I probably complained more than I needed to. If I would have removed the exhaust from the beginning and got the steering column bolt from underneath it would have saved a lot of heart ache! Oh well, live and learn 🙃
