#খন্দকার আবদুর রশীদ ১৯৪৬ সালে ব্রিটিশ ভারতের কুমিল্লা জেলায় জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনীতে চাকরি করেন এবং বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধ শুরুর সময় দেশত্যাগ করেন। তাই তিনি ছিলেন একজন মুক্তিযোদ্ধা। পারিবারিক নামের মিল থাকলেও আবদুর রশীদ ও খন্দকার মোশতাক আহমেদের মধ্যে একমাত্র সম্পর্ক ছিল তাদের অভিন্ন জন্ম জেলা। শেখ মুজিবকে হত্যার পর খন্দকার মোশতাক আহমেদ বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি হন।15 আগস্ট 1975 সালের অভ্যুত্থান এবং শেখ মুজিবকে হত্যার সময় রশিদ ছিলেন একজন মেজর । অভ্যুত্থানে অস্ত্র ব্যবহার করার জন্য 15 আগস্ট রাত 11:30​ টায় দ্বিতীয় ফিল্ড আর্টিলারির অস্ত্রাগারে অভিযান চালানো দলের সদস্য ছিলেন তিনি। মোশতাকের সঙ্গে সারাক্ষণ যোগাযোগ রাখছিলেন তিনি। ঢাকা সেনানিবাসে তার বাসায় ষড়যন্ত্রকারীরা একাধিক বৈঠক করে । হত্যার পর তাকে লেফটেন্যান্ট কর্নেল পদে উন্নীত করা হয়। হুসেইন মোহাম্মদ এরশাদের শাসনামলে তিনি ঢাকায় ফিরে আসেন । সৈয়দ ফারুক রহমানকে নিয়ে তিনি বাংলাদেশ ফ্রিডম পার্টি গঠন করেন । তিনি 15 ফেব্রুয়ারি 1996 সালের সাধারণ নির্বাচনে কুমিল্লা-6 থেকে সংসদ সদস্য নির্বাচিত হন , যা অসম্মানিত হয়েছিল। ফারুক ছিলেন তার শ্যালক।
শেখ মুজিবকে হত্যার দায়ে তার অনুপস্থিতিতে দোষী সাব্যস্ত হয়ে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়। তিনি 2000 সাল পর্যন্ত মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বসবাস করেন । কুষ্টিয়া ভিত্তিক জুবিলি ব্যাংকে আবদুর রশিদের শেয়ার বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক বাজেয়াপ্ত করার নির্দেশ দেয়। তার মেয়ে মেহনাজ রশিদ ফ্রিডম পার্টির নেতা এবং 2009 সালে বাংলাদেশ পুলিশ তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করেছিল।
