    Machinery importer/builder here.
I love the idea of domestic production and +60% would put import costs on par with domestic building costs but we just don't have the capital for the lathes and plasma tables and mills needed to build here. The strategy of tariffing the manufacturing back needs to be linked with some system to let us build those capabilities. We've been putting lots into R&D but the amatorization rules and tax credits just aren't there.

Love Ms. Economy’s scholarship and knowledge. No better human source. She’s wearing a St. John’s Knits jacket. Sharp.

No problems, just decouple completely from China. We will see what will happen in the two countries.

Xi Jinping fondly remembers when Trump’s granddaughter Arabella serenaded him with a song sung in Mandarin….The Kushner children, Arabella, Joseph, and Theodore, were all formally schooled in Mandarin, a tribute to their respect for China’s history and culture.

Like the "hub and spoke" concept. The national debt needs to be addressed.

Toyotas made in America are very high quality cars. They’re the best in the world. Don’t let the Chinese build those cars here in the US.

China circumvents trade restrictions by opening factories in Mexico and other countries. It’s Chinese capital and labor and raw materials but in a third country. We gotta close those loopholes and back door workarounds. Tariff the heck out of solar panels, EVs and lithium ion batteries.

I hope the U.S. and China will never fight another war with each other. The two great countries can bring peace and prosperity to each other and to the whole world. As Admiral Paparo says and recognizes China is no longer what it was years before. In my opinion, It is critical to understand that China is very well prepared for any conflict with the U.S., whether it is a trade war or a hot war. It is worth reckoning this question: has the U.S. won anything against China since the establishment of the PRC in 1949? In the modern world, most of the world troubles were created by the U.S. and most of the alleviation of poverty was achieved by China. The trade war started by Trump and carried on by Biden is only making China stronger and more advanced in indigenous technologies. I hope Trump has learned his lesson the second time around. It is a self-indulgent delusion that the West under the coercion of the United States would be able somehow to stop or contain the rise of China with Biden’s so-called small yard with high fences, or “Trump’s big yard with huge fences.”It is a self defeating hypothesis. The U.S. and China should be partners and friends instead of enemies or competitors, for the benefits of the humanity and for a better world for all.

First of all let me say hi to Elizabeth, been knowing you since your times at The Diplomat, it certainly has been a while.
Second, most of all these discussions are such a waste of time.
Old Chinese Confucius saying from two thousand years ago, [the order of things]: 修身,齐家,治天下 。Shape yourself; Straighten out your family, then try to bring goodness to the world.
That implies the person went through to process to understand themselves and the world and improve themselves FIRST, then work out the relationships with their family as a testing ground, THEN you try to bring goodness to the world.
Where is US today? They don't understand where themselves are relative to the world, their "family" (internal politics and economy) is in a mess, and you certainly are doing less and less good to the world as a predictable consequence.
Still blaming Russia and China or even North Korea for all that has happened? No reflection of the idiotic policies on US part that lead to a proxy war in Ukraine? No reflection or understanding of the underlying dynamics in Middle East East China sea and South China sea yet rush to decide what should happen there? No reflection on the US's place in global economic system and its old vision of a working global economic system is now increasingly very narrowly defined mostly from US's own benefit perspective without taking in the changing dynamics, yet try to tell China which direction their economy should go?
You guys are so low on these understandings yet you could be so high in US decision making hierarchy, but I know where you come from. You are the product of a period of US primacy that is unique in human history and you've begin to take your old stature, your old methods, and your old self worth for granted when fundamentals (once skewed in your favor)that enabled it has (for the most part) changed with time.
Let me tell you where you should begin. In the context of "trying to fix things for the better" everything is an extension of economics, and the economic system US setup after world war II had 2 critical flaws in today's world:
    1. The economic order that US has setup was enabled and made to work during a period where nearly everyone else was abnormally down or not yet begin industrialization, but those dynamics has fundamentally changed when not only China but other states have risen to a certain level and are continuing to rise.
    2. US's economic order inherited a lot of the characteristics and problems of industrial-colonial-imperialist era without actually solving it's inherent contradictions and problems; these problems were covered up by points in 1. US dominance that allowed US to craft temporary ad-hoc solutions, but is also being challenged by points in 1 : it is increasingly no longer sustainable as US dominance give away to a more equitable world as other states rises, and this needs more equitable REAL, INCLUSIVE multi-lateral solutions (no, "me and my ally" is not a solution its a narrow minded child think)
When looking for REAL lasting solutions, you first need to re-examine the fundamentals of economics on a global level completely. Hint: ALL of US's own economic history from 1945 onwards while have some, limited, reference value, it does NOT have the answer to the new dynamics of present and future.
I could have easily written a 10-20 page essay expanding and explaining the points above but why don't you boys and girls try exploring them as say, a "homework", should you find it is of merit. If not it's also fine, we'll just continue to go on our merry ways.

I was surprised by the lack of mention of the growing social problems in China, for example the one child policy causing a disproportionate number of young men vs young women. I’d be interested to know how this is going to impact their plans in the near term
