    Outstanding video! I’m a retired CEO from the construction industry but as a kid, grew up in the trades working in my father’s company. He did custom homes and multi family. Two rules you left out for any project management 😅 is that any project always takes twice as long and costs twice as much 😢. Over the years, my design skills declined but the management skills still work. I am helping my daughter to plan and renovate her kitchen. So much has changed in your specialty since I last helped with designing a kitchen!
    I am sharing this video with her and her husband so that they have a clear understanding of the process before moving forward. Your presentation succinctly explains the process and, with every important detail. THANKS!

      Thanks so much. I appreciate your comment and input. Unfortunately you are right. More time and more money tend to be a perpetual theme for projects like this. Even when we do prepare lol.

      @@MTKDofficial in response to the previous comments. After forwarding your video to my daughter and son-in-law, they got busy doing as you instructed. They listed everything about the kitchen and whether they liked that or not. They sent to me a floor plan and colored elevations of the existing cabinets. (All to scale) Then they categorized every appliance and kitchen gadget as you described, such as daily, monthly or once a year. Next was creating better organization of the existing cabinets and selecting what to donate. Sometimes one never realizes how he or she influences others! And, you have.

    Keeping a sink available at the end made me laugh. We had a water leak and the first things that went were our sink and cooktop, that was about 10 weeks ago. My husband offered to put a temporary sink in, but I told him it was no big deal. Washing dishes in the bathroom has put me over the edge. Now, should I tell my husband and hear "I told you so" or just keep it to myself. 😂

    I just had one of your videos pop up (white kitchens), so I found the most recent for comment. My family is Dutch (currently live in the US) and I am a very good cook and baker, including laminated & yeast doughs from scratch, especially around the holidays. For me a dream kitchen has Porceleyne Fles tiles (real Delft) interspaced with pain tiles (in the best cream or white match - they are faintly greenish gray white in the background) lots of light, and features I'd specifically want for the baking, including a dedicated cold dough working island, with at least one round corner for shaping round pastry, with no appliances in the cabinet other than a refrigerator drawer specifically for keeping resting dough cool, and perhaps a low temperature warming drawer in a different cabinet entirely for raising yeast dough. And I want to add retractable crumb catchers to the underside of the edges for easy cleaning. Would also want gas stove and four accurate temp ovens (probably electric), and maybe a place to put cookie sheets and a few other types of pans to cool or rest once done.
    Alas, I have no house, money, or job, but I can dream...

    I get a little glow of pride every time someone mentions that we banned manufactured stone products. Australia isn't a very big country and we probably can't be the best in the world at everything we do, but if we're going to pick one thing to really be the best in the world at, I like that we chose worker safety.
    Our factory workers' lives matter more than trendy kitchen benchtops.

    Mark, thank you for this VERY helpful video! I've been contemplating where and how to start my kitchen renovation for four months and thanks to you, I now have a clear starting point and all the steps required to finish my design to give to the contractors.

      I added up the lower percentage of all categories you suggested for setting the budget, and the sum is 106%. When I totaled the expenses a 25k remodel, the sum was $30, 500. In that case, I guess I need to plan for a 20K remodel. Is that what you would suggest? The percentages you suggested are a range so that is creating the discrepancy. I'm just trying to make your formula work for me realistically.

    Thank you, this was a very good general overview of the process that I'm sure many will find helpful. I noted that you haven't included for electrical which can be a considerable line item and is typically on par or higher than the plumbing allowance. Inevitably circuits will need to get moved, upgraded, new circuits added, new breakers, possible panel upgrade to support the changes. Just something to be aware of in the planning process.

    Going on over 2 months washing dishes in the bath tub and it SUCKS. I’m renting a family members house since they are living in a care facility. Blessing and a curse I’m the one making all the decisions. The range died and it was one that had a built in range hood beneath the upper oven. All I wanted to do was replace the range and have a range hood installed. Removed the fake brick paneling from behind the range and found linoleum running up the wall. I got it tested and it had 25% asbestos. Had to empty the entire kitchen out and then discovered mold (non toxic) in the lower cabinets on the opposite side of the kitchen. The list keeps going on and on. In the end the Asbestos abatement people gutted the whole kitchen and spent way longer then they were planning. There is nothing left except open walls and the 1x6 sub floor. I think my contingency budget needed to be way bigger then what you suggested. My wife and I are enjoying your videos.

    What are your thoughts on soapstone countertops?

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Soapstone is a very good natural stone option, especially if you like the look. Very dense and resistant. I have a video on it. Search soapstone on my channel and you'll see it.

    I wish I would have found your videos 3 months ago. I think I will be happy with most of my choices for my small kitchen remodel but am wondering if I will be disappointed with placing the microwave over the stove since it will be higher than your suggested chest high level. I made this choice because I wanted more counter and cabinet space since my kitchen is so small. I will definitely share your videos with my friends who are thinking about remodeling.

    Hi Mark. Have you done a video on solid surface backsplash materials (one huge piece and no grout lines)? I was looking at the Dekton Slim material but are there other/better choices?

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not specifically. But large scale porcelain slabs are an option for backsplash. I have 1/4" thick samples and they look amazing. Similar in price to Dekton I think.

      Everyone knows that a sign of status are flutes. And a basket of them, well that's just bragging high status.
      My aim in life, to have a basket of flutes in every room, even the downstairs commode. Just because.
