Brompton Marathon Plus 101 - tool free installation

  • We started making Brompton related videos for TH-cam two whole years ago!
    Our first video was to show how easy a Marathon Plus tyre was to install
    But back then we were too scared to speak or show ourselves
    So we didn't necessarily explain the technique as well as we could have - so - to celebrate 2 years and 100 videos - we made this one, Marathon Plus 101!
    Hopefully the film and sound quality has also improved over time - though the number of outtakes doesn't seem to get better

    Ok... I now know how to remove and refit both tyres, reinstall the chain tensioner (2 goes at this) ... and after several hours of huffing and puffing, install Marathon plus tyres (strangely one took about 2 hours and the other about 10 minutes ... no idea why! I followed the instructions both times). I now have blisters the size of golf balls on both thumbs and have lost the use of my fingers! I’m going to have a very large glass of wine, or maybe the entire bottle!Top tip ... remove your best jumper before starting 😥. Seriously, thank you so much for your videos, I couldn’t have done it without you. (I might just go to the bike shop next time though ... cheaper than a new jumper!)

      @adrianlw2750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Plus have more robust construction, and are more puncture resistant.
      I am very pleased with my Plus tyres. I ride a lot in the dark and I feel very reassured with them fitted, I feel I do not need eagle-eyes for glass fragments or other troublesome road debris.
      They are heavier though. Which may or may not matter to you. Does not matter to me as I do not carry the bike folded much, other than in/out of house or car.
      I felt slightly more confident in the wet with the Racers than the Plus, but I have become more cautious - not a bad thing really 😃

    Thank you also. I told it again. For me It is THE channel for Brompton. I think no other bike manufacturer has such a wonderful, helpfull advertising in the www. With the tires on my Alex Moulton AM I have a lot of pain when a change is necessary. Its a torture to fit the tire on the 17 Zoll AM wheel. I have panic before! But maybe I do something wrong.I never have this problem with my Brompton. I think a lot of your followers here in TH-cam will thank you and support your work. Well done! there was a moment when I started to think you had lost your way - but no - you got there! It's not hard to find people complaining about how hard to fit these tyre can be, but there always seems to be someone around who can do it. I've got them in three sizes, I think , and happy to confirm - as long as you get the rest of the bead into the well youi'll be fine. New tyres are much stiffer than used ones and warming them sounds like a great idea - Thanks for that one!
    I've enjoyed several of your videos but perhaps this is the occasion to compliment you on your technique. You have long nails (absolutely your choice) yet you can fit a tyre without breaking them. I'm so impressed - I couldn't!

  • @bill7853
    @bill7853 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you'll find that the ease of fitting ( or otherwise ) may well depend on the age of your bike and the rims used in the build. Also the age of your tyres etc . Rims marked as the same size often differ enough in size (between manufacturers or production runs etc ) that even with great technique and gorilla grip thumbs you will sometimes still struggle to fit a tyre without levers on some combinations . It is not always just about getting the bead into the bottom of the rim well to get some slack although undoubtedly that will make a big difference if you were not previously aware of that technique. The hardest combinations may require levers and toe straps or similar ( to stop the bead popping off as you force the last few inches over the rim wall ). Tyre lube will also make it a lot easier of course and can be carried in a small leak proof container to aid puncture repairs .

    • @brilliantbikes
      @brilliantbikes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and for your comment. We are talking specifically about Brompton and their tyres. We have never had an issue with any age Brompton tyres / rims

    • @bill7853
      @bill7853 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brilliantbikes Thanks for replying ...Perhaps I'll send you my set ..original factory rims on 2003 T6 , together with my Marathon plus tyres and perhaps you can video fitting them by hand . I have 50 plus years of fitting tyres ..all sizes on all wheel sizes and have rarely needed lube / levers or warming them up ....even in winter . The technique you demonstrate is common knowledge amongst cycling enthusiasts who work and fix their own bikes and has been used for nearly 100 years. Perhaps my set are particularly stubborn and inflexible ...a bit like myself !.( as they are quite old..again like myself ! )but being in visually good condition I continue to use them which involves occasional removal/refitting . I don't think they were particularly hard to fit originally but they are certainly very difficult now ..even with levers and a very thin rimstrip ....hence my original comment . IME newer rubber is more elastic normally ...but with time can harden /dry up and be a pain ( and should ideally be changed anyhow ) It was just a comment to point out that anyone wondering why they can't do it easily ..( as you demonstrate ) ...despite copying your instruction, may be failing because of the issues mentioned above not because of poor technique !

    Another useful tip I learnt is to let a bit of air out if you're having trouble getting the last bit of the second bead in. With the Marathon+ I find it is best to let out as much air as possible for that last part. It makes this difficult final step much easier.

After buying a new set of Schwalbies and tubes and after getting the old tyres off that last bit with the first new tyre was making me go batty as I was struggling to get it over the rim and so of course I went to TH-cam for help and one video was ok but THIS ONE revealed that neat trick with getting the bead into that central trench in the rim allowing just enough extra slack to pop the tyre over that last tricky bit and I was so happy and the second tyre was done in a fraction of the time so now everything is back on the bike and I just have to adjust that rear gear thing. • @adrianlw2750
    @adrianlw2750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing I would add, about ensuring the tyre is evenly seated.
    Once fitted on the rim, and before reinstalling on the bike, I find that pumping up to max pressure (110 psi in the case of the Plus) helps to ensure the tyre is evenly seated all round the rim. So, I inflate to max (I use a JoeBlow track-pump), and check all is nicely seated. I then deflate almost completely, leaving enough air to ensure the tyre holds position on the rims, and with a little persuasion this allows the tyre to pass between the brake blocks for reinstallation.
    Out on the road, if using the Brompton standard pump, it will not be possible to get such a high pressure to seat the tyre, so it is a matter of doing the best possible and if necessary review tyre seating etc when back home🙂
    I use this procedure on all my bikes, not just the Brompton.

    Thanks for this video. I just fitted my first Marathon Plus and when I got stuck on the last part I thought there must be a knack to doing it. Using your method feels like magic when it pops on at the end with hardly any effort. Thanks again.

    does the new tyre rub against your mud guard compare to marathon racer?

    • @adrianlw2750
      @adrianlw2750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi realhass - my Plus initially did, rear only. To qualify - had only occasional issues with Racer pumped to 65 front 105 rear. When I fitted the Plus, I pumped 75 front 110 rear and the rear did rub on first ride. I let the rear pressure down to 100 and had no further rubbing issues. But the clearance is very tight so I anticipate a little accumulated winter dirt could see some occasional rubbing return. The mudguard stays may have enough standard kink in them that with a bit of judicious “straightening” that could be cured too 😃

    • @briandavies2833
      @briandavies2833 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      EDIT: I have fitted two Marathon Plus in the past week, front and rear, both on CR18 rims. I don't even try to do it without tools due to arthritis in both thumbs. I found the Kool Stop Tyre Bead Jack to be invaluable. Both tyres went on first try without too much effort.

    This seems elementary and maybe someone can help me with this. When flying with a Brompton, do you deflate the tires, as per some of the airline policies ask? Once you arrive do you pump them up with the Brompton pump or do you find a bike shop? What's everyone's travel workflow and what equipment do you bring with you?

    • @bethmccaff255
      @bethmccaff255 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I brought mine abroad in a b&w folding box. Worked out perfectly for me. I did not deflate my tyres and brought just the small Brompton pump for emergencies

    • @brilliantbikes
      @brilliantbikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve done both - forgotten to deflate and they were OK and taken a pump with me. Some cities, like Stockholm have pumps on the streets

    Another great video. Please can I ask for your views on how you maintain your chain after riding in the rain? Do you dry and re-apply wet Lub or do you fully degrease chain after every wet ride or for that day? I’m also considering waxing my chain, but am put off with removing my chain to soak for hours and I know the quick release is not designed to do this regularly. Would love for your views on this and what you do - Thanks.

      @brilliantbikes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and your comment.
      Good question! Our chain maintenance is the same between our MTB and Bromptons. The MTBs get more abuse/dirt. We generally clean / dry the chain, trying to remove as much dirt and grease with a cloth. Then apply Pedros lube (just on the rivets) so not too much, allow to soak for an hour and the clean with a dry cloth. We do degrease the chainset but less frequently.
