  • A few years ago I did a series of "Low-Cost Ideas" for my old A-Frame trailer. Here's the first of a possible series intended for almost any small trailer or camper. Most ideas cost only a few bucks, nothing when published was over $25 USD. Camp frugally!

    I like my fabric door-hanging shoe-holder. Basically a 24 matrix of pockets. I cut it in half, added a couple of grommets, and hang them all over including on the back of my drivers seat. Books. Water bottles. Cords. Socks. Glasses. Pens. Plastic bags. Containers of little things. Even shoes!

      That's a great idea...I should get one to put over the back of the rear seat in my Jeep and my Bronco 2. A great place to store items within easy reach, yet out of the way and not getting tossed around the vehicle during offroad excursions.

      Mike Mead At home I use one of the these on the back of the door to my pantry and I store my cleaning supplies in the shoe pockets. They are clear so I’m not always rummaging around looking for the cleaning product I want.

      Awesome that I'm not the only person who uses them.
      I have them in my house in the kitchen for all the water bottles and odd shape things that fall out of cupboards.
      But they are great for traveling and shower hooks work on head rest.

    Storage for. Cast iron skillet - my wife found that storing our cast iron skillet in the plastic bubble wrap envelope, like Amazon ships things in, works well. It keeps it the things around it protected from both impact and grime. It's cheap and easily replaced if it gets greasy.

    Hey Slim love your new trailer.
    With the fire extinguisher. It's a good idea to take it out of the holder and give it a shake about once a week while traveling.
    This prevents the powder from setting up on the bottom and prevents it from possibly clogging up in time of need.
    When you shake it you'll feel the powder moving inside.

    • @arthurleslie9669
      @arthurleslie9669 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Wilson ... I do submit it's a good idea for when the trailer is parked for a while. However, when the trailer is going down the road it gets an extremely good shake. I know that first hand. That's why it's also a good idea to check the clasp that holds it in it's hanger to insure it's still secure before traveling.

    • @W4KG
      @W4KG 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arthurleslie9669
      Here's one for you, drive around with a box of baking soda.
      The road vibration will solidify
      It. It will settle all air space out of the powder. Higher dollar extinguishers eliminates this issue with a two chamber design one for the pressurizing gas and the other is the powder.
      Pressing the lever transfers the gas to the powder section fluffing it Pryor to exit out the nozzle.
      Smaller Marine type extinguishers don't.
      Just a pressurized bottle with a tube that goes to the bottom of the bottle..
      It's just a good idea to give it a shake each week to eliminate this issue.

    One of the things I love about your videos is the creative modifications you come up with for your trailer. You've given me permission to make mods to my next trailer, thank you! As far as where or how to store the cast iron fry pan, the first thought was a small pillowcase, just to put something around it; but then I thought about the neoprene laptop sleeve that I have for my Chromebook; that might be a better solution; or into the pillowcase and then into the sleeve, it would serve to keep the sleeve just a bit cleaner over time.

  • @pbsalfen
    @pbsalfen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I had previously tossed around the idea of using snaps to retain various items, this video clinched the deal and I ordered a kit yesterday. I especially like the fact that the ones you recommended are stainless steel, so I can use them on the outside of my van, with minimal rust staining. Some other great ideas in this one also! Thanks for the push!
    Probably been mentioned somewhere else, but it looks like the door shade once had the base brackets installed on the door, but were removed at some point in time and the screws were left in the holes. The brackets would have eliminated the possibility of the shade taking out an eye.

    I was a fireman for 30 years and when it comes to fire extinguishers there is one more important thing you should do to make them more effective. good idea where you put yours but one thing you need to do is shake it up. yes that's right, when you go down the road and with all the vibrations the powder will settle and if you have a fire only a portion will come out the nozzle. so make it a habit in your TT set up that you shake the extinguisher or even take it our and tap it on the TT tire. this will break up that powder and if you need it you will have 100% of the powder instead of say 30%. OK I''m done now, keep up the good work, love watching your videos

Altho if you're outside you might be grateful for another one in the door so you don't have to run into the fire to get the extinguisher;). For your cast iron pan. Two options, but both involve magnets. Mount a decent strength magnet either on the side of a cabinet or into the bottom of the cabinet. If you want to go fancy, use a on/off magnets that has a rotation knob that will deactivate the magnet so you can easily remove the pan. You can DIY it, or just buy it. Cast iron will stick to the magnet and not shake about. You can cover the magnet with a rubber mat to improve traction too.

    An idea: This has to do with the fire extingusher. Even though it may be found unnecessary to do when checking you fire extingusher remove from mount and turn end for end a couple times before reading the gage. A person might even tap the face of the gage to make sure it is not stuck. Sometimes gages will become stuck and give a false reading.

    For your fire extinguisher, I would like to see a small block of wood screwed to the wall just above it to prevent you from possibly hitting the trigger handle with your foot while exiting the bed and breaking it off. For one of my extinguishers that is in a "spider accessible" location, I took a very small piece of dryer sheet and put it over the nozzle and tied it loosely with a piece of thread to keep a spider from deciding to build a nest / egg case in there. It's light enough and tied in such a way that even if you forget to pull it off before use, the pressure will blow it away. And, thirdly, I second the suggestion made elsewhere in the comments to occasionally remove the extinguisher from it's holder and turn it upside down and maybe tap it on a wall as the powder can compact itself into the bottom of the tank from the constant vibration of driving. I was a member of an industrial fire department and our protocol when using a dry chem extinguisher was to turn it upside down and tap it at least once on the ground or running board of the engine to make sure we had full use of all the powder.

    Paint that "lower half' mirror either with chalkboard paint for leaving notes to yourself. Or replace it with a piece of metal that magnetic organizer items can stick to for more small-stuff storage.

    You mentioned about storing your cast-iron frying pans, I noticed you had a blank wall over the stove, hot-glue a piece of wood or plastic the length you need to the wall over stove, use screw-in hooks to separate pans and hang by handles, you can obtain Bungie cargo mesh net's in various sizes...screw extra hooks to hook mesh to

    Campervan owners in the UK are moving over from the normal fire extinguishers to fire safety sticks. Discharge for longer and are more effective and not as messy after being discharged. Search you tube for reviews if interested.

    Cast iron skillet: I saw someone in a built box truck buy a wire basket (wood might do) and screw it on the wall above the stove. For the handle, they used velcrow stips to keep the skillet sturdy in its place. That was another way to save space with limited storage. It would require screwing the basket into the wall if that is an option for you.

    I keep my cast iron skillet in a flannel pillow case. It goes in a small cabinet under the stove since the handle is too long to fit in the oven. It keeps the skillet from moving around, protects the seasoned iron, and i can keep another smaller pot inside it.

    In oz we have car window reflectors. You just put them up inside and get the visor to hold. Well I cut them to suit window and folded over cloth and sowed around. That so the edge does not fall apart. The elastic. So when cold or hot. Just roll out and clip up using the elastic. It covers the window. Insulation. I hope it made sense. Cheap to do. I have a old caravan. I am using your tips thanks. The screens i have just written about. One side white. So my back window I turn it around so it does not blind the driver following me but it keeps the sun out of the van.
