I've loved Dave Grusin since I was turned on to "Discovered Again" in the 70's. His Rhodes style is is killer on Colorado Trail, and he switches seamlessly to an acoustic, all with Ron Carter on Bass. The whole album is a gem, with a young Lee Ritenour, and Harvey Mason.

Great story about the theme from Maude and a great performance by Dave at the end!

The "Donny" he's referring to is Donny Hathaway for the "Maude" theme...

This clip just doesn't do Mr. Grusin justice. People like to go on and on about his motion picture soundtracks, but apart from "3 Days of the Condor", most of them have never done anything for me. However, this man's prowess on the Rhodes cannot be overstated. He's EASILY one of the FUNKIEST keyboard players I can think of. He doesn't even have to solo; some of his rhythmic comping is otherworldly. Check out the aforementioned "Condor" soundtrack; his version of "Keep Your Eye On the Sparrow"; and his producer/sideman work on Grover Washington, Jr's "A Secret Place" (album AND title cut); Earl Klugh's early work; and Noel Pointer's PHANTAZIA album (ESPECIALLY the title cut); and his work on the early Angela Bofil albums. One thing that comes up in this clip, though, is the Quincy Jones connection. Dave Grusin was an INTEGRAL part of the Qs team in the mid-70s when Q was going for a funkier jazz sound (and before the arrival of guys like Rod Temperton, Greg Phillliganes and the Toto guys in the late 70s). Besides the Rhodes, Grusin did some great synth work on Q's albums from that period (YOU'VE GOT IT BAD GIRL; BODY HEAT; etc). He was also a HUGE contributor on the first two Brothers Johnson albums.

Dunno. I just know that this particular Rhodes sounds totally sweet, but Mr. Dave Grusin happens to be one of the finest keyboarders - check his totally flawles sustain pedal work to keep everything chrystal clear yet seamless. This and his wonderful playing would still sound great on a Rhodes in worse shape.....

That is an exceptional Rhodes he is playing. Does anyone know the history it?

2:36 HOLY SHIT, DAT SOUND. The sound of that particular Rhodes is absolutely phenomenal. Whoever voiced it should be hired to voice all Rhodes pianos everywhere. God almighty. Not to mention the amazingly quiet Suitcase amp and pristine recording signal path, and the perfect EQ. What studio is this in and who was the engineer??

Very nice playing at 2:36! Grusin is Phenomenal not only Rhodes) The Man who Play!

Lo que hace Grusin a partir de 2.35 es muy serio y de una belleza conmovedora.

Ese no es un Rhodes del monton. Y el que Toca tampoco.
El audio, la eq y la grabacion perfecta . Alguna otra cosita?
