Thank you! What a beautiful articulation, you should most definitely turn this into a article or academic paper! God’s Peace.

History has changed and no one doubts that, but we as Christians should not because we need the life preserver of Christ to pull us back to what is real. Most of us really appreciate the 39 articles of the faith. Thank you Mr. Saller.

The static argument doesn’t make sense. The Catholic Church via the Pope etc. were not static, which was how corruptions arose that required reformation. If the 39 Articles got dogma right, then we must be static with it, to be orthodox.

Great discussion; I love the 39 Articles and I also appreciate the way that the ACNA "Fundamental Declarations" affirms that they speak from a particular historical moment, but still express "fundamental principles of authentic Anglican belief". Many of the Articles that reject "Romish" practices are also official teaching in Methodist churches. When I was a United Methodist pastor I liked to point out that those Articles do not necessarily condemn contemporary Roman Catholicism. This is simply logical since, as you note, the Roman church does change and has done so in the last 500 years (regardless of what pop apologists say); so "Romish" must specifically describe the pre-Reformation church, not the Post-Vatican II church.
Also people do sometimes seem to "read things into" the Articles that aren't actually there. I've seen Reformed Anglicans online saying that the Articles "Teach 5-point Calvinism." But the Article on Predestination doesn't say anything about whether election is conditional or unconditional; it only explicitly affirms a single Predestination; and the Article "On the One Oblation of Christ" pretty explicitly affirms universal atonement, as opposed to 5-point Calvinism's "Limited Atonement." Plus the Articles were finalized a generation before the Synod of Dort, so it is anachronistic to "read Dort back into" the Articles. All that to say, I think sometimes people (including maybe some Anglo-Catholic leaning folks) are assuming that the Articles teach certain Reformed doctrines in a way that they do not.

Daniel, Very good points you bring up. Thanks. As an Anglo-Catholic in the Continuum, however, I don't view the 39 articles with as much appreciation. I see them as a historical document that has some value, but not nearly as much value as the writings of the Apostolic Fathers and Ante-Nicene Fathers which contradict many of the Articles of Religion in their interpretation of Holy Scripture. The 39 Articles in their plain meaning contrary to the Apostolic Tradition on numerous points. I think the ACNA wrongly give the 39 articles too much emphasis.

The articles no doubt support unconditional election, and this is a normal western view of predestination, not something introduced with calvin

great video Mr. Saller, i am new to anglicanism (i previously was going to join the eastern orthodox church, long story) and i was wondering, if you approve of invocation of the saints, in what way? simply asking them for prayers rather than prayers of praise and veneration to them? this is a view i could be okay with, although i wouldnt necessarily do it myself.
you may already have a video on this, and if you do, forgive my ignorance

I really enjoyed this. I lean somewhat in the “Anglo-catholic” direction and really appreciate the 39 Articles (and the Books of Homilies for the most part). I recommend E H Browne’s “Exposition of the 39 Articles” as an overall excellent biblical and patristic defense of them.

This is the problem with confessional documents. Same thing has happened with the American Constitution. I think it all depends how you approach the subject of confessionalism. The reformed and lutherans have different approaches such as strict, full, historic or good faith subscription to their respective subordinate standards. If one holds to the good faith approach I think its compatible with your view.

I grew up in ECUSA, and the fragmentation of the Anglican Communion has grieved me. The tendency of some to be dogmatic with a particular point in the history of the CofE, such as which version of the BCP is the "correct" one. This post is a very thoughtful treatment of the 39 Articles in that context. Thank you!

Alexander Penrose Forbes on the Thirty Nine Articles is worth reading.

Have you read Tract 90 by John Henry Newman ? It's an early commentary on certain passages on the 39 Articles through a Catholic lens.

@JohnMascola-0xr5ds In addition to Tract 90, there is also Keble's Catholic Subscription To The 39 Articles by John Keble where they were to be interpreted and understood in accordance with the general rule of Catholic tradition, i.e., in the Catholic sense "what has been taught always, everywhere, and by all".

Not a fan. The Marian apparitions strike me as bizarre, unhelpful, and slightly gnostic.

As long as the clarity of the Gospel and justification by faith don't get lost for rituals and religion. I'm am ex Catholic monk. We had no Gospel, no justification beyond our last confession...that's still Rome.
Further, the 7th ecumenical Council made the veneration of icons and images not only acceptable but also obligatory under anathema. Surely that is an unbiblical binding of the conscience? I'm new to Anglicanism. Do you ACs take the 7 ecumenical councils as infallible like the EOs and RCs? Because that's a bridge too far for me...

I’m a reformed catholic Anglican (leaning somewhat in the Anglo-Catholic direction liturgically) and I also significant reservations about Nicaea 2.
